Title: Antarctica Cruise Raffle
Post by: as2 on July 19, 2018, 11:59:22 PM
For those not following, there were some comments (jokes?) made with regards to putting together a raffle of sorts, with the prize being a ticket(s) to the DD/SF Antarctica Cruise. Some seemed interested in taking the jokes seriously, so here we have it, a place to materialize it. Start a discussion, a wiki, or whatever and let's see if this is actually something we can make happen!

I'd probably be in (depending on the details.)

If this is serious it probably shouldn't be in JS.

Iím in, but weíll need approximately 300 people in order to charge only $50 per entry
Itís doable if dan will direct people from DDMS

I will try to find one.
Problem is would it make sense for them to raffle off one berth? Might limit who would buy into that raffle.

Exactly what I was thinking too, that would make this 25k.

$26K.
And then they would probably have to include airfare to USH, which could add another $2K, so we're at $30K.

Going to need to sell a lot of raffle tickets to make that up.

$26K.

$28k, as they'd probably want a twin rather than a triple.

$28k, as they'd probably want a twin rather than a triple.
Indeed, so $32K being raffled off.
I guess they could do one of those raffles where there are 360 entries with a random amount between $1-$360 based on the ticket number.
Or they could sell 360 tickets at $180 each.
What happens if they don't sell them all though?

I would say offer the ticket or cash to get more interest but that defeats the purpose.

It has to be a all or nothing raffle. Don't sell all 360 tickets everyone gets a refund.

Well, the charity doesn't need to get as much if they aren't running the raffle. If an individual were to run it, tickets can be sold with 10% going to charity, and anything over  $xx,xxx goes to charity as well. Although there is less of a draw if the charity is profiting less.

I'd buy a ticket for $100 in a heartbeat if if it's going to charity, otherwise potential return is much better with a powerball.

Maybe we can get a general idea of what people would be willing to pay for an entry, and how much they'd want going to charity. Then we can start a wiki to see how many "pre-sales" we have. If we have a solid 5% commitment we might have an easier time getting this off the ground

I like the latter, but it would deter those who can't afford to give more then $100/$200/$250 etc. I think a set ticket price would be better.
Most of these type of raffles I get in is $100.
This number seems right. The question is will enough tickets sell. If this hits the MS and gains some publicity, we may attract a donor or 2 to add a runner up prize in return for putting their "sponsorship" up there.

+1 some times I hesitate to donate in the $1-$360 gamble, not always do you want yo donate $360. A $100 ballpark donation sounds reasonable. IMO

$100 ticket would need nearly twice as many sales as that.
$180 would be the comp.

A DO doesn't have preparation, I don't feel comfortable sitting there trying to pull out all the info I can with no specific topic, (although we did our fair share of that), a seminar is a prepared speech, with what to talk about.

If the offer includes an option for a cash prize, imo the cruise option doesn't need to be for two.. the cash option should definitely include a consult... Could be $10k cash or the $12k cruise option plus flights.. that way the options are much closer in value

Consult is difficult given that I live in CLE. The cruise gives a good opportunity to offer that.
Not aiming to have the options close in value.
Title: Re: Antarctica Cruise Raffle (discussion?)
Post by: mmgfarb on July 23, 2018, 10:29:18 AM
The point of the raffle would be for someone to get to go on the cruise. You have to offer something else in lieu of the cruise on the off chance that whoever wins can't go but that prize doesn't have to be nearly the same value as the cruise. If you can't go, and you would only buy the ticket for the prize and not the charity, just don't buy a ticket, simple as that.

Agree, just trying to come up with a way to make it cheaper..

A domestic plane ride to CLE ain't adding that much.. and proportionally the difference between 18 and 32 is close to 10 and 13+flights etc... Or doesn't have to be the cheapest option to make an even bigger difference
Title: Re: Antarctica Cruise Raffle (discussion?)
Post by: Dan on July 23, 2018, 10:35:50 AM
I don't mind adding a domestic plane ride, or even making that a 2nd prize.
I'm just dubious that your typical person would fly to CLE and back for that and whether they would gain all that much other than easier MS while here... Also I don't want that to be resold and I'm not sure how to avoid that.

Maybe a second prize could be the consult in Cleveland and an Indians game with you? Then folks are flying out for more than the consult (and who doesn't love going to a ball game with a true fan?).

Fair enough. My point was to make it a straight-up raffle for the cruise, let's not start adding extra complications and money.
We can do 300x$100, $3000x10 or whatever makes the most sense.

Why not make a raffle for $100 for 1 seat or $180 for 2 tickets (couple) (or something like that). Max tickets  that will be sold will be to cover the cost of the tickets (so odds are 1 in 130 etc).
Can start a wiki who is interested and if the right amount of ppl are then we do it. If not enough sign up then no harm no gain???

You'd have to account for those that say their interested but back out when it comes down to it.

If there are enough ppl someone trustable (plenty on DDF) collects all the QP for the ticket amount then he makes the raffle. Its not that difficult!

A big point here, is finding a charity that appeals to all sects of Judaism. We need to figure out where we can give this cash to, that most of the people who are interested in this raffle, would want to give $ to.

Why do we have to make it confusing. We can leave out the charity and make a simple raffle that covers the exact cost of the trip?

Another point: Assuming Dan (would be advertising this) is ok with it, we can definitely find a sponsor for a second prize or 3rd prize especially if we will put their business name on the raffle announcement.

Because many seem to be more willing to enter based on the fact that a percentage will be going to charity. With the amount of tickets we need to sell, having it all go solely to pay for someones cruise, may deter those less interested. Also, if we don't sell out, it would be a mess returning all the money.

I don't really get that. My $100 or $180 or whatever is going towards the cruise regardless, tacking on extra money for a tzedakah isn't changing that.

Not necessarily. The first $xx,xxx raised is going towards the cruise. Let's say it's sells like crazy, and we raise $100k, the leftovers would all go to tzedaka

IMHO The point of giving such a big prize is that people shouldnít look so much on which organizations theyíre giving too And the rather concentrate on the big prize they might get, the fact that there is a charity behind it just takes away the guilt in case you donít win.

I think this kind of defeats the purpose. If I wanted to enter a charity raffle to win $30,000 there are hundreds of raffles ever year from almost every organization out there. I can attend Chinese auctions that are held every other day minute and win allot more $$ for cheaper tickets.  I think the whole point is that its a small intimate raffle amongst DDF's here with a much higher odds of winning.

Do it with a charity, limit the number of tickets, let DDFer's buy first then, if it's not sold out, post on DDMS. That solves all the problems and still gives DDF an advantage.

You should have planned the Antarctica trip with DDF as well

Add enough money for a tax gross up.  So make the prize be about 1.5x or 1.6x the cost of the trip, so that you'll soap have enough to pay taxes

I though a non-profit fixed that? None of these Chinese auctions and such go around giving 1099s...

Just a thought - If there is a cash option, somebody who may have really wanted to join & ends up winning may not be able to justify to themselves taking the trip instead of $18k (or wtvr it will be). Maybe there should only be a cruise option & if the winner canít come you pick a new winner.

Dan's idea of making a big value difference between the cruise and cash prize would presumably prevent this..

The taxes are a big problem in my mind.
Probably need to offer 2 cruise berths and at least $10,000 in cash. Going to be tough to sell enough tickets to make a profit I think.

What you do is have participants state whether they want to enter a ticket for 1 spot or 2 spots.

At the drawing, if a 2 spot ticket is drawn, the game is over. If a 1 spot ticket is drawn, draw more tickets until another 1 spot ticket is drawn.

Would have to come up with a model to fairly price the tickets but I'm thinking the relative price of the 1 vs 2 spot tickets would be dependent on their distribution. You'd also have to assign the relative values of the prizes. 2 spots is more than 2x the value of 1 spot, correct?

And then we also need to offer money to at least defray the cost of the flight to USH and the taxes. It all adds up to a lot.
Why are 2 spots more valuable than 1 spot?

The whole idea was to lower the price of tickets, or lower the number we need to sell. This wouldn't help.

If one is doable, and the other is questionable, let's go for the doable one. If you win it, and you wanted 2 slots, you can still take the cash, buy another spot, or gift it to someone else.

you will never find any raffle for a travel prize for only a single person and I would  guess the reason is because most buyers are married.

Agreed, this is about getting the cruise for super heavy discount in a fun way. If you wan to win $10k-$50k cash, there are more then enough auctions happening for that type of prize.

If winner doesnít want cruise (which is what they entered for), they can get $3k-$5k cash and pick another winner.

Of course they want the prize. Issue is if the pot only raises 10k and the winner can't afford another 6k or so he doesn't have to Shell it out and someone else can still win.

Well that's his choice. Going into the raffle he knows the risk. Perhaps have the option that he can get his original $100 (or whatever) back if it's too much for him to Shell out. Or have a pre set amount everyone agrees on that the pot must raise or all the money is returned

I say K.I.S.S.

just go straight-up 155 tickets @$180
My point was to make it a straight-up raffle for the cruise, let's not start adding extra complications and money.
We can do 300x$100, $3000x10 or whatever makes the most sense.

If you want to donate to a charity they go ahead and do it. This raffle IMHO is for those that can't shell out X amount of dollars. Set a price and number of tickets to be sold.
I don't care who runs it but KISS is the way to go.

1) I think we need to possibly offer the option of 2 tickets (married couples).
2)If the wiki picks up with names maybe a mod can send 1 blast email to all DDF's (to show up as a "new email" when they log in) so that they can be aware of this? We need to increase traffic to this post as not every DDF'er checks this topic, or any subject that doesn't interest them at that week etc.

I think we will have enough people for a raffle esp if the mods can send this out to every on DDF that has 50+ posts or something?
Maybe we can aim for $100 or $125 a ticket and if more people sign up we can lower the price accordingly.
Maybe someone here is willing to organize it for the cost of a free raffle ticket?
If we get 75+ to agree then can start collecting $$ via QP or something (can always refund if doesn't work out) for one ticket. If we get enough ppl it will become 2 tickets, if enough ppl we can lower the actual price etc.

Conditions:
 1) Winner must continuously post updates on the trip and do a TR with pics.
2) if you win 2 tickets and only need 1 you can only sell it for (??$5000??) and first offer must be to someone that participated in the raffle etc.
3)????

Anybody willing to Volunteer to organize it?? no risk and worst case you just have to refund the money? (or don't accept the money and just "reject" it)

To expand on this a bit: the raffle ARV cannot be more than 300x the ticket price. Ideal setup is 2x Twin berths + $5k cash, ticket at $100. This would be an ARV of $33k, or 330x the ticket price, and so cannot work.

Possible options:

A. Raffle off 2x Twin + $2k; charge $100. ARV $29.9k, or 299x.
B. Raffle off 2x Twin + $5k; charge $110. ARV $32.9k, or 299x.
C. As above, but charge $118/120. More significant number in Judaism, and can sell ~10% fewer tickets to make it worthwhile.

Vote!

Dare I ask why?

I'm surprised that's even a question for you, after all you know about me. I just have a built-in non-affinity for the "standard", "normal", etc.

Except if it's cash, where coming up with the odd number might be a hassle, I would always give $101 rather than $100, be it as a gift, donation, etc.

I like the idea of the $5k prize, since there's more that goes into trip planning / prep then just plane tickets.

When I participate in a Charity sponsored raffle, I am always a winner. If I won the prize, well that might even be obvious to you, if I didn't, then I won the ability to be part of whatever the charity does.

If time is of essence, we may be better off with a 1-360 type of raffle.

We can also get Mispacha or Ami or someone to bash the whole idea of trips to Antarctica, they  can then add that it's not enough that some rich gashmiusdik blogers are going but that even regular Kollel yungelit are being tempted due to a raffle on DansDeals giving away a free trip. That will sell out all the tickets for sure!

Spend $180: Get a personalized, handwritten thank you note. Choose between Dan Scrawl or SF Chicken Scratch fonts.
Spend $360: A handwritten note from both Dan and SF, plus an awesome t-shirt (may be pre-worn; size 5x tall only).
Spend $700: All of the $360 level rewards, plus an official Kosher Antarctica bentcher.
Spend $1000: All of the $700 level rewards, plus a genuine Antarctic Iceberg (may be slightly melted).
Spend $5000: One (1) penguin.

why don't you cap the entries at -300-400
please make a limit

no limit of tickets being sold. will definitely decrease the amount of participants
I have a feeling a lot more will sell than expected
i would buy in if there was a low amount of tickets sold
Why in the world is everyone so worried about setting a max number of tickets sold??
At this point we're not even hitting the minimum number of tickets that need to be sold   ::)

This isn't making it anywhere near 1K tickets. I'm not going to retweet it ever day like day 1.
A few hundred tickets at the current average price of $99 per ticket wouldn't even cover the costs though. So we'll see if it happens.

It's impossible to be like a regular chinese auction. Like others have said even if we had the cash we can't simply put life on hold. In a regular auction, you win 2 tix and you choose the time and place.

WOW! If anyone knows why it wouldn't be taxable please let me know.

Winning Raffles. If youíre lucky enough to win cash or property with a charity raffle ticket, you should know that the IRS treats your prize as taxable gambling winnings that must be reported on the ďother incomeĒ line of your tax return.

In a charity raffle where each additional tickets actually significantly increases your odds, things are different.

I understood Dr Moose as saying "everyone was doing the calculations for one ticket" - on the cruise, not a ticket in the auction. Instead of $30k prize, to be a $15k prize, with that it would need less tickets sold.

That is irrelevant to those who are buying tickets, as I'm just guessing that most people joining the raffle weren't planning on bringing their spouse even if they win. I may be wrong though, this is just based on the few people I've spoken to.

Ummm yes and I always ask. Also most Chinese auctions are donated and most fundraisers overhead is listed or is furnished upon request.

And Im happy to for my own accounting know that $20 of my $100 to the collector is his commission and most are honest about it. I also don't answer Tzedeka telemarketers as most take a massive cut so I go straight to the org.

If im required to give Masser and you also listed Maser can be used many people will assume its the full 100...if I buy a ticket for $100 and $5 goes to tzedaka, I would like to know that....nothing wrong with that but I need to be able to account my personal Masser and know that only $5 will count.

I will watch this after Shabbat but will this answer the question of if its ok to be offering Halachic advise and making assumptions that this is like any Chinese auction and by virtue ok to use Massr?

Alot of times the prizes are donated in-kind.

Dan please don't take offense but if by that token one could use Masser without knowing how much is going to the charity then we can all create loopholes, make a blind trust whereof our 10 percent all goes back to us with a small amount going to a charity.

Just like a tx receipt for a dinner that is $360 may say $300 (subtracting the dinner) so to one (I would assume) needs to subtract the cost ... obviously when you donat there is overhead and for a food bank half of your donation can go to salaried employees but when it is something your experiencing for your benefit and not admin costs etc. ( a dinner, contest ect. you should have to subtract).

If your going to be implying that you could use Maser please reveal how much is going to the org.

Please don't take this the wrong way.

This should be split to 'about giving tzadaka thread', you're supposed to give tzadaka with a smile and heartfull without being nitty gritty on how much they need and how they spend. And may Hashem give all of us without deep inspection how we behave, and that's why before you kippur you throw in to all pans some coins to show that we give without a chesbon, it should be mailitz yosher we should get withou a chesbon.

Tzadaka is about helping those in need it's not an extension of liberalism I'll support you and tell you how to spend it. And the gemorah says "afilu lirchov al chamor" so keep it cool and give him another dollar to overcome your nesoyen.

1) Maaser is not Halacha.
2) My Rav listed me 3 Rabbinic perspectives (perhaps there are more) on whether you should subtract the cost of the dinner at a charity event from Maaser, and it is not as clear cut as you make it seem that you must subtract the cost.

Good Shabbat.
So if you win, just ask your LOR how much maaser you should give, as the dollar value of what you receive is greater than what you paid for it.

If you received nothing tangible in exchange, why wouldn't you consider it all maaser (or tzedoko)?

On another note, do you ever *thank* people for soliciting you for a donation? If you haven't, I strongly suggest you start doing it, it will make you feel better about giving, and might also be a form of tzedoko, in making the solicitor feel appreciated.

You're talking to someone who asks collectors how much of a cut they get, clearly not someone interested in making them feel dignified, let alone appreciated.

Make your מעשר account $25k in the hole?

I thought the purpose of the raffle is to accommodate those who don't have $25k earmarked for a cruise.

It has always been my understanding that in such a situation you give the ticket amount again. As in if you win a raffle you deduct one ticket from what you used from maasir.

This whole maaser discussion seems to be predicated on this raffle being in order to raise money for a tzedaka. Is that the case? Or is the raffle simply to be able to get a trip and we needed a place for the extra money to go to?

So you quote him saying "speak to your LOR" yet you're complaining that he's giving halachik advice??

No "its the same as any other chairty raffle"

"I dont see why not"

Adding a caveat 'ask your lor' does no justice.

I dont want to create confrontation - I see Dan's side of view - this isnt being advertised as a fundraiser for the org. but just that it supports it

Good grief, talk about making assumptions. Watch the video, it isn't the holy grail, it's a different perspective on charity fundraising.

And as for what you do with halacha like everyone said above it's like anything else, talk to your rav.

Sorry to cause you grief ;)

I watched it, great video . . . I see the perspective though not sure it is inline with Halacha though again your right Im not a rav and not my place to poskin how Masser falls into everything

I once donated money to a poor family, and then I noticed them buying ices for the kids during a heatwave. I double checked the nutritional facts of the brand and saw that they ices were quite unhealthy, so naturally I never gave them another penny.

Are you joking? This isnt about where pennies are going - I am a big supproter in going above and beyond - I would be 100 percent fine with my money going towards the family taking a vacation to miami in the ritz - I actually think we need more Jewish orgs. giving our Jewish brothers and sisters the same luxeries we like

Amen!! so you support my view - I dont care if the Tzedakah goes towards giving a rolex to a person in need - I just want to know if 99 percent of my ticket goes towards the trip instead of the org.

Etc.

Dan, I see your perspective, this does seem to be common - I made an assumption that the prize of all of these types was donated in kind but that is likely not the case and further all have overhead being covered by the ticket.

On something like this:

https://www.dansdeals.com/advertisement/5-days-left-act-fast-win-50000-cash-joining-leshadech-raffle-10-prizes-10-winners/

"May be bought with maaser money; donations are fully tax deductible."

I don't know how they came to that conclusion which isn't listed on the other ads and it could be they have everything donated in-kind but who knows

I guess this is more of a question for a LOR.

Best.

Def not tax deductible unless Dan makes it a sweepstakes w no purchase entry option (even if difficult to do, like get him a postcard by tomorrow). Even then many tax professionals would frown on deducting this and would view it as gambling losses.

No one knew there was going to be variable cost until it happened.
You could probably base it on average price so far. Not exact but close enough. Best option at this point would be to close the raffle once X amount of funds raised. Or better yet just let us complainers complain.  :)

What's the difficulty? I buy 5 tickets for $360 and split the cost with someone else 50/50. If any of us win, we split everything (each of us goes, none of us can bring a guest).

People sometimes have maxed out Cards - and the card they provided last week might not work now. If its done in real time and it gets rejected they just put another card - but now you have to contact them and ask them for a new card

If I won I'd probably want to be anonymous, but I think it probably needs to be public.

Some raffles have a "name on ticket" option. Even when they don't, sometimes people put only their initials etc on the ticket.

I have gotten a ton of PMs of people asking be kept anonymous if they win. I think that doing the raffle live with some personal info blocked out would be perfect. That would maintain both anonymity and credibility.

Keep in mind that some ppl may not want the prize traceable to them. Say, by the IRS. for better or for worse. And even a handle can be traced for most ppl.

Also keep in mind that the winnings are FULLY taxable per anyone.

Sounds more credible than "Something Fishy".

In any case, what credibility are we trying to uphold here? That they did indeed do the raffle? Easily provable, if somebody asks. That we didn't rig it? Live drawing solves that. That there actually was a real winner? Again, easily provable.

Why not ask the winner prior to announcing it? If the raffle will be done live, then first name and initials would be fine. Also, if the individual want to sell it, but doesn't want everyone shaming them for passing on this opportunity, that would help

Just hand a spreadsheet with a few dummy entries showing what it looks like to someone who knows excel, and you can have them write a quick macro to do what needs to be done.

Would have made sense to take care of this in advance, but then again...

ETA: see responses here (http://mathscinotes.com/2012/04/randomly-choosing-a-winner-from-a-weighted-list-with-excel/). Though you need to understand a little in order to figure out what the solution is.

Or read here for a few solutions: https://www.excelforum.com/excel-programming-vba-macros/958999-weighted-random-number-generator-for-raffle.html

That got me thinking.

This should be a quick & dirty solution (I'm not sure if this is what @EJB had in mind)

Lets say the number of tickets purchased are in column A, starting From row 2. Add 2 columns, let's say E&F.
In F put

That got me thinking.

This should be a quick & dirty solution (I'm not sure if this is what @EJB had in mind)

Lets say the number of tickets purchased are in column A, starting From row 2. Add 2 columns, let's say E&F.
In F put
Code: [Select]
=A2+F1And in E put
Code: [Select]
=F2-(A2-1)This will give you the range of ticket numbers for each purchase, Column E through column F

Similar, but see attached for something I made in literally 30 seconds.

Add the names and number of tickets they bought in columns A and B
Column C calculates a running total of the ticket #s
F2 randomly draws a number between 1 and the total of the tickets purchased. Every time you press F9 it will redraw until my ticket wins.

And yes, you can calculate a min and max # for each person pretty easily as whyme did

Actually  this shoulda just been
Code: [Select]
=F1+1I knew I was overcomplicating it...

Buy a roll of these (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QYHNLIQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_lgQGBbQNSJ68R) and @EJB can teach you how to assign people to the numbers. Will add some excitement by having to look up your number.

Many stores carry these and/or any school/camp worth it's salt.

Lol, now that the roll of tickets have been purchases, we need to use the rest, otherwise they'll all go to waste
What would the criteria be for another raffle? Same as this one?

I was right.  I wish there was a deal that once they hit 45-50k, it would've been round 2.
They would've still made 35-40k, and another fomo would've won.
I've seen @EJB's inrernal actuarial central estimate for expected value of each ticket. The astounding number of tickets sold cut those odds immensely. Hence, it's only proper to draw another winner from the current pool to deliver the odds folks expected.

No extra work for you Dan. Just pick another ticket.

Give a 50% discount on purchases of tickets to the second raffle to anyone that participated in the 1st raffle (up to 5x the number of entries the participant purchased in the first raffle), with all other terms remaining the same.

Never made any such prediction. The only value statement I made about raffle tickets was criticizing someone who was contemplating buying 100 tickets when 450 were bought SOLELY as a gamble. I said you'll likely lose a lot of money per the odds when all is said and done.

Maybe do again with a heavy heavy discount for those that already purchased. It seemed all along that it was going to be a smaller amount of people participating, so you had better odds.
While of course there is no taking away money from tzedaka, they should agree to do another one or 2 raffles AT COST, and to allow big discounts for repeat buyers.

Feel free to find another charity to arrange another raffle.
I spent dozens of hours dealing with the logistics of this one. Happy to have helped Chabad and someone win the dream of a lifetime.

I do think a 1-360 mystery amount raffle would do very well as well.

Lol. It needs to be the same charity, that can afford to do it at cost. They made much more then they ever expected.
That will allow quicker raffles, as well as being able to give big discounts for someone that already bought a ticket from them.
Dan, I'm sure you had a busy day, but I would think there would be another ddfer in Cleveland that might volunteer to do work on the day of raffle.

Would be cooler if the winner was an active DDFer, no?

If you download a full member list from your database, you can do a quick VLOOKUP in Excel to cross-reference.

But still wouldnít get everyone, as people wouldíve had to use the same email address here and there (or not changed the one here since signup, although you should have that history too).

By just doing a solo, you don't even have that option to lower your cost.

Um, no they won't. Nothing short of a hurricane-style storm will cancel a cruise. I don't think more than one or two have ever been canceled because of a bad crossing. At worst they'll take a circuitous route or wait a few hours to depart.
