Title: Best Cashback card for general purchases?
Post by: aceofpilots on October 29, 2018, 08:57:47 PM
I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for the best cash back card available for just general everyday purchases (coffee, toilettries, take out or just whatever is minor that doesn't require benefits)

I know AMEX has a 1.5% Cash magnet and chase I believe is the same?

i'm not really interested in a 3/2/1 structure.

I was thinking about getting a Citi Double Cash Card which was 2% which was the highest I could find.

Alliant
are those points more than 1ppd?
Or is there another benefit to that card?

They are 3 cents per dollar and then go down to 2.5 cents after year one (that's cents not points)

Great care if you can get approved

Alliant

But you have to spend ~$12,000 on the Alliant Sig @ 2.5% before you come out ahead vs a straight 2% card.

When I read coffee, toiletries and take out I don't see $12K being realistic.

~$12,000
And that's excluding spending in more lucrative bonus categories on other cards.

How is 2% better than 2.5-3%? Is this some type of new math they are teaching?  :)

For first year the discover it  card will match your points which comes out to 3% on all purchases besides the bonus categories but no sign up bonus.

$11K x 2% = $220

($11K x 2.5%) - $59 = $216

($11K x 2.5%) - $59 = $216
No fee the first year and 3%.

No fee the first year and 3%.

They make sense though.

3% for the first year, yeah.

But i'd only be making an extra .5% more in year 2 and so fourth plus i'd have to pay $59 annually.

I don't think I'd rack up enough cash back to come out positive where I'd pay off the $59 then make more on top of that.

If anything, I might break even.

Then the ones posted above-Alliant, Discover It (first year) and BoA Premium if you’re a Plat Honors member. My husband usually carries 2-3 different cards in his wallet. Round stickies labeled with gas, grocery, etc made it easy for him until he learned. You can even color code categories. MSR Cards are placed vertically in the slot so he grabs it first.

Best to look them up, see if you’d be interested in them, and if you’re even eligible. BofA has become more strict with approvals.  Different issuers have different rules. There’s an art to CC applications. If you’re not familiar with the cards, then you’re probably new and don’t know about 5/24 either. Google Doctor of Credit for a wealth of info.

You do realize, when it gets down to it,  any card with a half decent signup bonus will be easily worth more upfront than the cash back you’d get for a couple of years with even the best cash back earning regular card, assuming you’re spending that little annually

Amex blue cash preferred gives 6% on the first 6k of groceries, 3% for gas, 1% for everything else. Has a $95 annual fee so if you just use it for 6k in groceries you'll net about 4.5%.

you can't redeem Amex mr points for straight Cash back at 1cent per point. They give .7 cents per point so 4 points per dollar is really 2.8 cents per dollar. Furthermore they don't give straight Cash back or even statement credit it goes based on your purchases for example if you have 1000 mr points and a $100 dollar statement they won't give you $7  off your statement ( .7 cents per point x1000 =$7)  only if you had a $7 purchase in that statement would you be able to redeem this 1000 points for that transaction. Even the amex Cash back cards ( blue cash...) Don't give cash back, only statement credits in increments of $25

I have AMEX blue cash preferred for a bunch of years, I'm realizing it's not so impressive. $95/yr AF, and the 6% back maxes out at $360/yr. When I realized that the no-fee version gives 3%, which is $180, it turns out you're paying $95 for a max of $180. Not as impressive as it originally sounds.

if your looking for strictly cash back with no af then the discover card may be a good bet because they'll match all the cash back you earned the first year, essentially giving you 2% back on all purchases and 10% back on rotating categories. the freedom card is also a good option because they'll have 5% back on rotating categories discover wont have (example: chase pay, paypal...) (with discover you'll get $50 sign up bonus which doubles and an extra $20 if your a b student or better which doubles too, the freedom will give you $150 bonus and another $25 for adding an authorized user) note: the discover card doesn't give the bonus as cash back to your bank only as a statement credit

The Alliant card is the best option for someone looking specifically to spend large amounts of money on a generic card without the hassle of points and miles.

If you won’t be spending lots, just get a $750+ signup bonus every few years. Heck of a lot more than 2 cpp you’ll make on your everyday purchases. Do the math.

Discover you can get the cashback to your bank account easily.
Its actually easier then capital one quick silver and amex blue cash.

If there's no other factors, then obviously it's a good deal...but it's not as amazing as it seems at first glance. For example, my school sells vouchers to local stores with what amounts to a 5% discount. Not as good as a 6% cashback, but better than what I'd get from the Blue Preferred.

and before the end of first year with discover refer your spouse so you'll get $50 referral bonus which will double, plus you're spouse will get a $50 bonus which doubles and you'll have another entire year of 2% back on all purchases and 10% back on rotating categories.
If you're able to fully maximize your rotating categories for those two years and you referred your spouse then you'll have made $1500 cash back before taking into account the 2% back on every purchase and the $20/$40 if you and/or your spouse is a student

1) The referral bonus doesn’t double anymore, now it’s a statement credit instead of cashback
2) You can’t discuss referrals here, against forum rules
3) You can get a second card, after you’ve had the card for 12 months. So that’s 4 years of fun.
4) Once we’re discussing referrals, you can refer yourself as well
