If you insist on the closest to airport, Sarcelles is a suburb which is closer, has a huge jewish community (including Chabad) and many restaurants
Thanks! It's great to have the DDF community's resources!

Re: Please (Make and) Post your Kiddush Hashem-Honesty Story A wholesaler received a delivery which included several items he had not ordered (or paid for). He contacted his salesman who told him to keep it! He refused to keep it and sent it back- he didn't pay for it and did not want to keep it.
At the company's trade show the salesman went around introducing him as the most honest guy in the business!

Re: Please (Make and) Post your Kiddush Hashem-Honesty Story
I went through a cash toll in NY a few years back, and got too much change back, maybe $20 or $30 extra, don't remember exactly. At the next toll, I gave it to the person in the tollbooth, and explained to her why. She said that this was the second time that month that "one of you guys" (while looking at my yarmulke) did something like this.
I truly believe that we guys do things like this more often than not!

I think much of this is caused by the media feeding into this! (I was just at the Auschwitz exhibit on Battery Park and I left shaking as the climate today is so similar to that of Europe in the 1930s! It's terrifying)
My Auschwitz survivor grandmother has been saying for months that we are reliving the 30's in Europe. She says we are blind and stupid not to pay attention to the anti-Semitism.

Re: Its Open Season on Jews Holding yourself to a higher standard is all well and good, but NEVER to justify, even in the tiniest of ways, attacks on innocents.
We do have to take the attacks as a sign that something in us needs fixing, personally and collectively. When Jews don't make kiddush, G-d makes havdalah. It's not just the anti-Semitic beliefs of the perpetrators playing out here. I don't think those pointing that out are justifying the attacks. Haters will always hate , no matter what Jews do or don't do. But WE should connect the attacks to our need to do teshuvah.

Re: Air Serbia NYC-TLV, Add Your Name To The Wiki For Minyan/Trips! FWIW. I think it's wise to be aware of all that can go wrong and to plan accordingly; don't pack expensive stuff, use minimal carry ons to avoid being fleeced, etc. And be prepared that you might be delayed... It's when people have expectations that aren't met that they tend to get really upset. Don't expect full price service and you should be fine.

I am guilty of much of the same conduct, and am talking about myself as well. There are times when you have to see the forest for the trees my friend. Now we have no shul R"L and the kids are home all day. We won't be buying clothing for Pesach or going to exotic islands and we won't be making extravagant simchas.

At this point it feels like a G'zeira.
+1000000000000.
And this was Rabbi Waxman's point.  Honestly, does anyone believe that acting earlier would have changed things at this point? Look at the entire world! This is not a Jewish community problem, it's a world-wide problem. Did the frum people in Italy create the chaos there? This is G-d talking here.

Re: This is getting serious... a somber thread about COVID-19
I don't see the point in trying to play God I don't see the point in trying to assume you know why things are happening It's easy to of course find spiritual strength and some type of message and awakening but I don't see how anybody can claim to know why or what is happening short of the fact that people didn't listen to the doctors
Taking a moral lesson from events is the Jewish way to respond to tragedies. The Rambam, doctor and philosopher himself, states that the spiritual lesson is the most important and to ignore it is cruel. Rabbi Waxman's speech does not say WHY this is happening, he is citing problems that need to be corrected that he sees related to our current situation.

Even if it isnt its a sentiment that is echoed by those who still insist on making minyanim clandestinely.
The Amshinover is a very holy person. I wouldn't change anything in how I am behaving, though. As far as I know he is also very into people doing the best medical hishtadlus possible. Interesting to know, that's all. Most of the people doing it are going AGAINST their Rabbonim.

I can't talk about that, but if my family all had the virus and recovered, and my BIL's family all had it (mostly worse than my family, and actually confirmed by tests) and recovered, would it be wrong to get the families together to celebrate my grandson's Upsherenish?

Re: Maimonidies
I don't understand why the people of Boro Park think they're special and entitled to have visitors in the hospital right now, to the extent that theyre fighting with the administration and even sneaking in right now against guidance. I went through the Top 10 Hospitals on USNews, and NOT A SINGLE ONE is allowing visitors right now.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/covid-19/rochester
https://www.massgeneral.org/news/coronavirus/coronavirus-latest-updates#visitor

https://www.nm.org/conditions-and-care-areas/infectious-disease/covid-19

These guidelines, while difficult for patients and families, are in place for everyones protection. By going and sneaking in, as alleged above, you are risking cross contaminating and infecting non-covid patients that are currently in the hospital, hospital employees, and your community when you leave.
This has nothing to do with entitlement. This has to do with ensuring that your loved ones are safe. You want to believe that what's going on in the Cleveland Clinic is the same as Maimonides? A mediocre hospital during the best of times is falling apart right now. Patients' families are allowed to ensure they are getting some care. Someone I know refused to go to a local hospital because when he was there last week they did nothing for him. Was convinced to go to a different hospital because he had double pneumonia. Yes, there is triage situation, but some hospitals are worse than others.

This is the mess you want to send extra visitors into, to act as roving fomites and spread infection.  👏
You are making blanket assumptions here. I never said it's not a mess. I never said put people all over. But you are saying these things are not happening. You do not know what is going on in every unit. I know they are dealing with chaos. That doesn't remove the need for some oversight here. You can continue to ignore it, if you want.

Re: מי כעמך ישראל - Post your stories here Personal sacrifices. From a sheitel macher.

Rabbanim ask us to sit at home and think about where this corona virus has hit us
In my own home I have a lot to work on
And Im my other home my work -this is where I shall start .
Throwing away the Instagram famous page of xxxxxxxxxn
And giving it up as a Karban to Hashem
And at this moment I am bawling my eyes out davening
That Maybe because this is the most heart wrenching gut wrenching thing for me to do that this karban is big enough to take away this virus from klall yisroel
And bring Mashiach right away !!!!
Heal those who are sick !!
Bentch those who need parnassa !!!!
Give shalom bayis to each and every home !!!
Give children to parents who are begging !!!, parents should have pure nachas from their children always ! !!!

My plea is I beg HASHEM to continue to make me succesful , to continue to have people trust me although they dont see it on Instagram .
I want customers who are loyal , customers who appreciate me . And not the hype. I hope and i am sure Hashem can do that all , because He has been all this time .

Re: Government Seizing Property During Covid-19
No one is denying they can take the property but the way it's supposed to work, is by calling the individual asking to purchase it and if there is no agreement they can seize the property.

I don't think it makes sense to just show up with a few tractor trailers with dozens of FBI agents,

They can always place a unmarked car outside the location where its being held and see if its leaving.
Exactly. Why wouldn't the Office of Emergency  Management  just make a phone call instead of 40 agents with guns etc? I'm beginning to think those who are calling this a police state are right. These guys are getting a thrill throwing their weight around.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
I always wondered why Jews were blamed for the black death.
Always assumed regular anti-semitism, but it makes a little more sense now :(

There's still plenty of anti-semitism, but we need to do better.
There was no medical knowledge of disease transmission then. Outsiders, including Jews, were always blamed for poisoning the waters or cursing them. it was anti-Semitism and nothing more. Actually, Jews were perceived as suffering less from the the plague; due to certain halachos that kept Jewish quarters free of waste and dead bodies. It was a perception that may or may not be true, but the facts are that Jews did bathe, wash hands and bury the dead differently than the rest of Europe at the time. Please rethink your comment.

Same argument over and over. No one on these forums is gonna change anyoneís mind. Unfortunately only one way that some peopleís mind will change, and I donít wish it on anyone. Long story short, best one can hope for is listen to your Rav.
A member of Bikur Cholim went to a guy that had his mikvah open and asked for a bracha. The guy looks at him like he's nuts! Why you asking me for a bracha? He says you must be a navi, I want a bracha. What? Yup, you know that no one will get sick and die from using your mikva so I want a bracha. The guy closed his mikva.

I will hopefully have video evidence sometime next week.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
I'm not talking about the legal part (though social distancing is not respected), it's the picture it gives.
The same picture that any other public place in a densely populated city gives. Only these are hasidim and everywhere else it's "regular" people. The focus on Jews is anti-Semitic. The reality that is being described, however, is mind-boggling to me. What people don't get about this causing death is beyond me.

Re: Are you still practicing social distancing?
Not good. People have lost hope that the government will rescind orders anytime soon, so they're taking matters into their own hands.
For example:
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-05-08/coronavirus-traffic-uptick-los-angeles-freeways-congestion-busier-heavier
It's not just that orders aren't being rescinded it's that there is no plan being communicated to us. People are realizing that the government has no real ideas about this and they are starting to use  their own judgment. I can see the frum communities approaching the govt with their own local opening up plans rather than waiting for it to trickle down.

Re: Are you still practicing social distancing?
I don't get this at all. Were people only practicing social distancing because the government told them to do it?
Of course not, but it seems that the curve has been flattened and there still is no plan to move on in a safe and thought out manner. Not sure what the issue is but people are beginning to think they just can't get their act together.

Re: Are you still practicing social distancing?
If everyone would practice social distancing, there would be no need for a lockdown anymore, nor in the future. People letting their guard down with regards to SD will lead us right back into the lockdown (whenever this one is finally lifted).

It's unfortunate that somehow they're conflated.
We've been in a lock down for far longer than originally posited. SD is going to be normal for a long time, but there is no intent to move us out of the lockdown phase. That is why people are doing their own thing. At what point can you mix with your own family? Not for another year?  And look at how other countries are moving forward. The US of A cannot get anything happening?!

May 12, 2020, 10:37:09 PM

Re: Are you still practicing social distancing?
If mixing with family will be putting them and you at risk then you canít mix. What does the policy of the government have to do with the equation? How can this possibly be political?

Itís a bit unfair to blame the government for not knowing what the future will hold, they didnít exactly invent this virus and couldnít have known exactly where we would be in the future any more than you could.
Do you think the lockdown should continue indefinitely now that we are over the peak?

Re: Are you still practicing social distancing?
Define lockdown? The exact rules that NJ has put in place till now? Probably not, but Iím not a doctor. I donít think itíll stay the same for too much longer anyway.
There is no reason why testing and isolating cannot be in place already.  Are we a third world nation? There seems to be no will to get things moving. That is what people are upset about. I am not talking about covidiots here.

Re: Do you know someone who has had Coronavirus after Pesach?
Yes but now if a patient comes in with muscle aches or a low fever thereís an incentive for a doctor to order a covid test for the patient. Nothing wrong with that. Just something to factor in to the numbers.
And factor in that people who aren't sick at all are looking for info regarding their status. I'm planning to test everyone in my family.

Re: yeshivas that are open
I can confirm similar instances in Jersey Shore before pesach from nurses as well as admin including senior admin. That sentiment has changed significantly since pesach, however, and the the sheer number of frum patients in those medical facilities before pesach which gave rise to chashash aiva is no longer a concern.
I can confirm first hand as well.
