Forum Games: Missing Link

AFTER you read the wiki, come join.  We'll help.

NEW GAME:  MISSING LINK     A Creative Thinking Game of Associations

1.  You need to figure out the Missing Link which connects two separate game words, word #1-->Missing Link-->word #2

2.  The Missing Link can be any association to word#1 and any association to word#2.  (see examples below)

3.  Any member can guess the Missing Link by posting:  link=Missing Link guess?

4.  The OP of the correct Missing Link gets to post the new word#2 in the following format:
            link=Missing Link guess   AND
            new word #2

5. Each OP of word#2 is encouraged to give hints if members have difficulty finding the Missing Link.

This is not just a free flow association game, but rather each pair of words is its own new riddle to be solved before continuing.
Examples:   If a member correctly guesses the Missing Link for word#2 of cereal, then cereal now becomes new word#1 and the member needs to create a Missing Link to a new word#2 and post new word#2.

New word#1 is cereal
If link=fork,       new word#2 could be      spoon   (easy)            cereal>you eat with a fork>fork is a utensil like spoon
If link=milk,       new word#2 could be      cow      (easy)            cereal>you eat with milk>milk comes from a cow
If link=bowl       new word#2 could be      soup     (easy)            cereal>goes in a bowl>a bowl is a how you eat soup
If link=bowl       new word#2 could be      lane     (moderate)     cereal>goes in a bowl>you bowl down a lane
If link=see          new word#2 could be      hear     (moderate)   cereal>starts with the syllable 'ce'>'see' is a sense like hear
If link=roll          new word#2 could be      bounce (harder)         cereal> ends sounding like roll>roll is an action like bounce
If link=sole         new word #2 could be    trout    (hard)            cereal> sort of sounds like sole> sole is a fish like trout
If link=crunchy  new word #2 could be     celery   (moderate)    cereal>can be crunchy>crunchy is also celery

Ready?  I propose we start off with easy/moderate until members feel comfortable joining.  Also, before we give the answer maybe we can go back and forth a few times with a hint, then an easier hint if needed, to allow members more time and geshmak of solving the Missing Link riddle.

I propose that any logical link=Missing Link guess that is posted is good enough to continue the game and the original member who thought of the link can CMIIW.  This way we don't have to wait.

Re: Where can i get it? (israel edition)
At home (in israel) we used to do the wash three times in soap and let it soak deal and we used to eat it i will find out today who told them to do that
ETA I just remembered that we used r moshe vayeh's book if he says something you can trust him 100% worth getting
Yes, past tense.  Now the only way is peeling fresh ones (and cutting in half), pulverizing fresh ones or buying frozen.  (I also don't get why frozen is ok)

OT sort of:  Same with corn on the cob kernals.  Either checking each kernal ( ::) ) or buying frozen or canned.  (please don't ask me why)

Pritzus Free - Tznius Getaways and Tips Disclaimer: This thread is not for everyone. It is for those of you who chap and are sensitive to this issue.

I would love to use the IHG nights over water at Bora Bora and use my points to go on cruises or to gorgeous Hawaii.  Until I hear that women won't be running around with only 5" patches of fabric on them I can only dream about these experiences.

Unless...perhaps we can collect ideas in this thread and eventually make a wiki of tzniusdik travel locations and pritzus free tips for enjoying traveling in a kosher way.

Re: [02/01 11AM New Poll] DDMS Redesign Branding - Help us choose A Logo
I agree
In addition, the logo includes MOVEMENT which is a stronger memory trigger than a static image.  Look at some of the new logos that are one color, but still try to include the movement variable with arrows.  (Was it Verizon that had the red arrow included?)  Look at our own Suave's avitar!

p.s. Thanks for your agreeing...but I have no likes so far... :)

I wish the questioner would bold the first new post
We should get back in the practice of reposting the current riddle at least once on each page forum page.  Since many are using tapatalk, I think your suggestion is great to bold each new riddle.

The official format would then be:

word1= xxxxx
word2 = yyyyy

p.s. New blood, new ideas!  Welcome!!

Word 2: Ritalin
Welcome to our new member!! You started out with a great riddle.
Once you play a few times you'll get the rules down.  In the meantime, word2 of the riddle that you guessed correctly will become word1 of the riddle that you need to post.

We are still trying to guess User6669's riddle.

Hint: It's a gimatriya.
For any of our "other culture" ones: a Jewish 'divide' (read divorice) is a 'get' which has the gematria (numerologic equivalent to Hebrew letters) of 3 (g) +9 (t) = 12

Nice one.

Oh, right.  I forgot about the hint of first, last, length.
I liked @SSLPhD's "Rhesus"/Reese's" better (even though I didn't get that one either).

The question is... how did @ericchavez91 get it?!  If he had to wrack his brain with the hints and ended up getting it, then it is legal.

Re: Forum Games: Missing Link
I believe with that spelling, he's referring to the hot place with lots of sand, not a tasty, post meal, snack
Easy way to remember:
arid, dry 'desert' you don't want a lot of...only one 's'
yummy 'dessert' you want as much as you can get...two 's's.

Taka it would have been a good one if it were 'hail' and 'dessert'.  Then we could have guessed 'frozen".

Re: (Live at 4pm Eastern) 10 meal prep containers for $0.45!
THANK YOU EVERYONE! (and sorry if I broke a rule :-\ ) My wife and I really appreciate all the kind messages and "good luck" messages we received from the DDF.

You all helped us with 30 units today which was our budget (still gotta pay those Amazon fees!)

We will be back tomorrow with a better promo code system if there are people still interested...

I think we will take @yuneeq 's idea of a single code to try and avoid all the confusion with some many promo codes!

I assure you that this group will always be able to help you out with buying any of your units at 97% off and I also assure you that there will most likely always be people still interested for another day!   :)

Make it a hot deal by combining it with this MR promo

Pay only $15 for the 7" and only $25 for the 8"
I think SearchGuy also should get a HT for this.  That ws the dealbreaker for me to get one.
Thanks OP and SearchGuy!

Re: Figuring Out the Math
CORRECTION: 229.4 square meters

Sorry- I added something wrong.
Area of large square: 175.8 m2
Area of lower triangle: 39.6 m2 (large triangle minus tiny side triangle)
Area of triangle at right: 14 m(a little more approximate because of tiny corner at the bottom)
Aargh!  Please don't post one of these again  >:( (...but it was fun  :) )

Similar results to @ckmk47.  I got approximately 233m2 (175.8+13.18+44.58)

Area of large square: 175.82 (15.98x11)
Area of "triangle" at right: 13.18 m(1/2 (1.22+1.1) (10.52+.1.6)-.88)  where .88= 1/2 ((1.22+1.1) x 1 .6)and 1.12+1.62=1.942
Area of lower triangle: 44.58 m2 (two large triangles minus tiny left side triangle) = 38.83+8.29-2.54
                                    where top triangle = 1/2 (4.86x15.98)
and bottom triangle uses formula (perimeter = 17.07+1.05+16.7=17.41)
                                    Area =  √---of ( p(p-a)(p-b)(p-c) ) where p is half the perimeter or  1/2(a+b+c)  (Heron's Formula)
                                    and tiny left triangle = 1/2 (1.07x4.86) where 1.072+4.742=4.862

Re: "What Would You Book" Master Thread: Crowdsourcing the Best Award Itinerary Option 1 if it were on a different day.  I think Option 1 is not really an option on 10/3 if you plan on spending succos in E-Y where you want to be.  I agree with the two above who said the same thing.

Conclusion, Option 2.  It is not two extra flights to E-Y, only one extra.  That second extra flight is what you are taking to take a one day side trip to Vienna.  Your minivacation in Vienna is saving you 10k SQ + 20k QF over Option 3 plus added convenience of car to plane and FCT (whatever that is).   Cost of hotel?  Part of your minivacation.  You have the points, enjoy Vienna.  No brainer.

Re: Need some help in putting up a temporary shower curtain in a bathroom with the.. Unfortunately, I don't think two tension bars end to end will work.  The ends will buckle with the weight of the shower curtain.  Remember, the slightest extra pull or weight on the curtain (including a hanging piece of clothing or even water weight) will pull the rods down from their position on the wall, curtain and all.

Re: Need some help in putting up a temporary shower curtain in a bathroom with the..
Make a cube of pvc pipe
There you go!  A Lego pvc shower stall.  One shower curtain, no drilling, no falling tension rods.

Re: Need some help in putting up a temporary shower curtain in a bathroom with the.. If you can't get an elongated curtain, and you don't want to sew, you can either use a regular curtain and have your feet show or use ribbon between one set of rings on the poles and (one set of rings on) the curtain holes to drop the curtain to floor level.

Re: Grammar and Spelling Lessons 101
I'm a Brit now living in the US. Over here, you spell it "traveling", but in the UK we spell it "travelling".

What do you do about "rebel" -- is it "rebelling" or "rebeling"?

When do you do a double "L" and when not? In short, where do you draw the line? (I love puns! ::) )
For the most part Americans do not double; Brits do.  Americans will sometimes double a final 'l' when the accent is not on the first syllable and the second syllable is a short vowel: (yes, @etech0)

'tra vel -   traveling    1st syll accent
'fuel     -   fueling
'can cel-   canceling

re 'bel  -   rebelling    2nd syll accent+short vowel
com 'pel - compelling

tra 'vail -  travailing   2nd syll accent+long vowel
con 'ceal - concealing

You have to admit there is a HUGE difference between 'not from concentrate - regular 100% freshly squeezed' Tropicana (or ANY brand) and this concentrate stuff.  Just the same, it's great to have bottles of juice ready to go whatever the taste!

Re: Tweets - Pics - Vids that R Virus Related
Very strange to do such a study and photograph the top of the hand rather than the bottom.
I am assuming because the top of the hand showed more dramatic changes.  Afterall, most people mainly rub their hands together to wash them so the palms would probably be the first part to get cleaner with any friction.  Just conjecturing.

How to Continue TORAH Safely STAY HOME, yes.
Stop Torah? NO!!

Where is the committee to brainstorm how to continue Minyanim, Kriyas Hatorah, Limud, Chavrusas, Batei Midrash, yeshivas, etc during these times??

Virtual learning for those who have devices (yeshivas, chavrusas)
dedicated-locked devices (tablets?) for those who don't usually use phones
teleconferences for live shiurim
chavrusas by phone
davening under doorposts of the open front door to one's apartment to create a minyan on a floor of an apartment building
listening to torah being read outside from one's balcony/porch, etc.

Please let us brainstorm here and maybe even develop programs or software (parnosa) for some!
We, at DDF, have the brainpower, collective knowledge, and initiative to make a difference for our communities, country, and world!
Let's do it!!

Stay safe, stay home, and CONTINUE TORAH and minyanim.

Question for next yidishe kop: Which way is Mizrach?
My kind of puzzle!  The picture must be taken at a place that is Southeast of Yerushalayim.  The Arab is facing Southeast, towards Mecca, and the yid is facing exact opposite, Northwest, towards Yerushalayim.  Mizrach would be in the direction of the white car in the upper right hand corner of the picture.

Re: Grammar and Spelling Lessons 101
Can some explain this to me? When to use "took or taken"?

Q -What is the difference between took and taken?

As an example assume a monkey is in a well, and someone is trying to say they would have taken the money out. Are both of these sentences grammatically correct?

I would have jumped in there and took the monkey out

I would have jumped in there and taken the monkey out.

A- There are some dialects where the simple past tense and the past participle are not distinguished (except in a few verbs). In those dialects, “I have took”, “I have gave”, “I have saw”, etc. are acceptable. These dialects are a minority, however. In the vast majority of dialects, the past tense is took/gave/saw, the past participle is taken/given/seen, and only the second of your examples is grammatical.
My skin is crawling to read "I have took" etc.
1.  I jumped in there and took out the monkey OR
2.  I would have jumped in there and taken out the monkey. [You don't split up the prepositional verb (take + out).]

"1" is real, a simple past tense.  This is what I did.
"2" is unreal, a conditional form of an improbable scenario.  If....I would have...but it didn't happen so I didn't do it.

Please. One main article that claims numbers which are less than 5% of involved residents and that doesn't even fall into the category of intimacy about which we are talking.  Cute possibility, but far from reality of a main transmission variable.

Re: Denmark and Sweden: An apples to apples comparison
Nicely done, @S209.

Back to SE/DK:

If the virus magically stopped today, and we could analyze the effects on life and economy of SE vs. DK, would there be a hypothetical argument to be made that SE came out of things ahead and DK’s measures were “too drastic” to “only” save 111 lives per million? We don’t shut down countries to prevent the spread of flu, granted COVID-19 isn’t flu, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.
I have to believe that DK too its drastic measures based on the empirical and statistical evidence of what was happening worldwide as opposed to "what if" we were going to magically stop the ball midcourt.  IOW, since their decision was made for the long term effects, it may not be a fair comparison to judge final results before this is over.

Thank you.  Correct.  I am suggesting that since we have disrupted our lives so much and r"l sacrificed so many kedoishim, I think another couple weeks would be advantageous to continue helping the curve slowdown in hot spots, to slow down the curve in middle America, to wait for the supposedly soon to be out vaccine (?), and to hear the results of what the antibody test really means.  IOW, not to jump the gun just yet.

The current Gift Card promo is $15 credit for a $100 spend on specific gift cards.  I did not see this advertised in the circular, just in the store itself.  There may have been about 10 eligible cards.  Macy's was one and possibly Kohl's, Penny's and Lord & Taylor's were on the list (but don't hold me to it).  Today is the last day.
