Take the Moral Machine Test
Thought this was pretty intriguing. With the advent of self driving cars ethics committees are going to make decisions that will affect the cars algorithms, putting a new spin on the trolley dilemma. MIT created a website where you can explore different scenarios and submit your opinion on what the moral choice would be http://moralmachine.mit.edu/ November 28, 2016, 01:17:02 PM |

Re: Interesting Articles...
But what should the rationalists do when they are indeed correct? It's unfortunate that he is so busy using every opportunity to bash the "right wing" orthodox and the rabanim. This can actauly be an interesting debate and discussion. But the tone of his blog post distracts from meaningful conversation. As an aside- did anyone else see the irony in him using the story of a girl who unfortunately lost her arm after not being vaccinated, right after lambasting rabbis for solely following anectodle evidence ? Re: Abortion = Murder?
You definitely are supposed to try to understand them and have them impact your life, but if you decide not to do something because you don't understand it or don't agree with it morally; then the Torah isn't changing you, you're changing the Torah. At the end of the day, the designer knows what makes the product tick better than the user. Rationalizing the Torah is wonderful, but if you conform it to fit your rationalization you're not a believer. Anybody who feels the need to apologize for G-d doesn't believe in him. As nice as the social justice aspects of religion are, if you think that's all G-d should or has the right to dictate you're a כופר.Not sure why you quoted me, nothing that I said was addressed specifically with rationalizing the 2 cases being discussed here, I was presenting a general hashkafic outlook. I would say though, that because we know that hashem is just and his mitzvos and the torah are meant to be a guide for us to become just, like him, that does raise a difficulty when there is a mitzvah that seems unjust. It's a flaw in our understanding but doesn't mean we cant be bothered by and question it, as long as it's the context of trying to gain a better understanding. Thats not rationalizing It's comprehending and knowing god. January 28, 2017, 10:26:47 PM |

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
I am honestly SO not bothered at all by "alternative facts." I saw the clip where she said it. They were arguing about statistics. Statistics are the most deceptively weak form of argument precisely because they sound so solid but say so little. She was basically saying, "You can quote your numbers, and I am sure you have your sources, but we have different numbers." That, to me, is totally valid. To grab on to her saying "alternative facts" and to make hay of it is typical of the kind of sophomoric satire that the Left loves to engage in. Okay, we get it. She said the wrong words. We get it. It's over. Now you can go back to quoting Monty Python movies while milk squirts out of your nose. Nobody's laughing at your geeky humor anymore... oh, except I forgot, half the country who also thinks this is cool but doesn't even know why. This is so true, I never thought I could tolerate trump, let alone cheer for him, but the way the media and liberals are reacting to his presidency make it impossible not to. Re: Will Amazon vs Walmart war ever end?...
Walmart already won. Neither one is going to put the other out of business. Walmart's purpose is to make themselves a full fledged competition with Amazon. Mission accomplished. The question is how long they will continue it for added publicity.Great point. I never would have even thought of purchasing these things at Walmart, let alone creating an account. Clearly they are the winner. May 09, 2017, 01:05:59 PM |

Imho, at this point just be there for him as a friend. You're not going to prove anything to him regardless of the strength of your argument. I'm willing to bet that less than 5% of bal teshuvahs (both ffb and not) made their life changes based purely on being proven that yidiahkiet is legitimate. If you are a true friend to him and are there for him regardless of his level of observance, you'll have plenty of opportunities to be mikariv him over time. June 26, 2017, 07:34:44 PM |

Re: Money to Invest
I find that DDF has many who are experts in all sorts of fields. DDF attracts people who think through how to get around roadblocks and find loopholes and workarounds. Such people are also likely to do the same in other aspects of their professional and personal lives. This will make their opinions about these topics valuable as well.+1, there are also lawers, doctors accountants and other professionals on here who have given advice, why wouldnt there be financial advisers too? +1 on Town Appliance. I will add that I also have found that sometimes their prices have been slightly higher than some newcomers. Even so I never bothered with them. I find that the advice they give on the reliability of the products and their understanding of which features will be helpful in a kosher home are well worth the price. If I am taking their advice I will take their price.+1 their advice amd knowledge of the frum consumer is worth the slight price diffrence. July 17, 2017, 06:07:38 PM |

Re: Car Lease v. Buying
I am at crossroads of about to either purchasing or lease a minivan. Can anyone help me figure out which I should go with? Which makes more sense financially??? TIA Look at it this way, assumimg you can get the same lease deal (which is not at all a given) after 5 years leasing will cost you approx, 16,600 which is about 3800 less than buying. But you'll be without a car, whereas if you purchased you can prob sell for 8-10k (in order to compare apples to apples we'll assume you put 12k/yr miles), which will bring your cost from 20,400 to approx 11,000. Add to that the diffrence in maintenance costs on a new car to a used car. On this case prob not so significant. Bottom line is it'll prob cost about 1k more a year to lease. Obviously, if you're willing to drive the sienna into the ground the savings by purchasing will be greater. October 19, 2017, 07:50:11 PM |

Re: Are you smarter than a 1st grader?
I’m not. I am, however, the parent of a 6 yr old in the first grade. She’s learning the basics of Common Core and I predict that will be a headache in the future. It could be, I think part of the issue is that we as parents dont know what the lesson in school was that the homework is reviewing leaving us to try and deduce. Its the same issue with the new way they do math. Trust me, I can figure out what 8+4 is, but unless I know what the learning method of using "blocks" or whatever method they used that day, I'm clueless. Luckily my daughter is a good student and knows most of the info, but if she was struggling I'd be unable to help her. November 22, 2017, 08:14:53 AM |

Beautifully said.Or anywhere out side of brooklyn and lakewood. Its sad that we've given the responsibility of chiniuch exclusively to the schools, to the extent that we can't tolerate having someone in our kids schools that is slightly diffrent than us. we are paralyzed and have no way of imparting to our kids what we believe is important if they should c"v see something slightly diffrent. Wow, thanks so much for the quick responses! surprised no Cleveland suggestions Oy, you shouldn't need to spend $1m for that. Re: Do you Daven?
I heard of an exercise to do with children to help them grow in their attachment to Hashem that I found to be helpful as an adult. This is something we try to do with our kids too, with a slight variation, we talk about the best and worst part(s) of everyone's day. It definitly helps the kids (and myself) gain perspective. It also is a great catalyst for meaningful conversation with your kids and helps get some insight into how they feel. If I would just ask them how thier day was, I'd get a one or two word amswer. January 11, 2018, 07:16:18 AM |

Re: Torah stuff that doesnt make sense
Would this be correct? You can question things for the purpose of understanding why they are true but not question if they are true? You can question if something is true, but in order to do so you must have a great deal of knowledge on the topic. Like @timt s post, it would be ludicrous for some non college educated guy to disagree with a doctors recommendations, based on years of research, to get vaccinated. He can question why, and try with his limited knowledge, to understand the subject at hand, but to have an opinion on the veracity of vaccination is misguided at best. I am confused. His point was science is another form of religion? His point was that they hide behind behind their claim to be the alternative to religion and are based off of logical well researched facts (science) but if you dig a little deeper it really requires a huge leap of faith in the different theories and is no more grounded than their views on religion. But it removes shibud making it alot more appealing. March 04, 2018, 07:53:45 PM |
