Re: Best (jewish) place to buy (Major) Appliances
+1 on Town Appliance. I will add that I also have found that sometimes their prices have been slightly higher than some newcomers. Even so I never bothered with them. I find that the advice they give on the reliability of the products and their understanding of which features will be helpful in a kosher home are well worth the price. If I am taking their advice I will take their price.
+1 their advice amd knowledge of the frum consumer is worth the slight price diffrence.

Re: Car Lease v. Buying

I am at crossroads of about to either purchasing or lease a minivan. Can anyone help me figure out which I should go with? Which makes more sense financially??? TIA

2014 Toyato Sienna (pristine condition, 40k) $341 x 60 months - unlimited miles
2017 Chrysler Pacifica $277 x 36 months - 12k a year

Look at it this way, assumimg you can get the same lease deal (which is not at all a given) after 5 years leasing will cost you approx, 16,600 which is about 3800 less than buying.
But you'll be without a car, whereas if you purchased you can prob sell for 8-10k (in order to compare apples to apples we'll assume you put 12k/yr miles), which will bring your cost from 20,400 to approx 11,000. Add to that the diffrence in maintenance costs on a new car to a used car. On this case prob not so significant.
Bottom line is it'll prob cost about 1k more a year to lease.
Obviously, if you're willing to drive the sienna into the ground the savings by purchasing  will be greater.

I would love to hear their take on it.  :)
Only 1 of them, who works in education went with the girl. She knew it immediately.
Btw, if Peg wasnt also a common word or they used a name like  Meg, I think more people would figure it out.

Re: Are you smarter than a 1st grader?

I’m not. I am, however, the parent of a 6 yr old in the first grade. She’s learning the basics of Common Core and I predict that will be a headache in the future.
I’ll say this- right now my daughter is learning English. Specifically- how to build a sentence. I would assume that’s what the homework sheet is about. Nouns...

It could be, I think part of the issue is that we as parents dont know what the lesson in school was that the homework is reviewing leaving us to try and deduce. Its the same issue with the new way they do math. Trust me, I can figure out what 8+4 is, but unless I know what the learning method of using "blocks" or whatever method they used that day, I'm clueless. Luckily my daughter is a good student and knows most of the info, but if she was struggling I'd be unable to help her.

Re: Women in Jewish magazines

In general, I think that the more promiscuous society gets, the more insular frum communities will become as a counter-measure. Think about it this way: normally you keep alcohol in plain view at home. However, if a family member has an alcohol problem, you will start to hide it. If his problem gets worse, you will throw it out and stop buying alcohol altogether. If it gets more extreme, you may throw out any magazines that have advertisements for alcohol and tell your family to not mention the word “alcohol” at all etc..

Point is, women’s faces became “not tznius” when society started shoving women’s bodies in people’s faces.

That does not sound like a reasonable response. See chava for example of what happens when you make whats mutar assur.

Re: School Canceled due to...COLD !
It's likely just what the kids are prepared for. MSP kids have the proper winter attire for -10, CLE parents aren't buying their kids a new wardrobe for 1 day of -10, so schools cancel...

Miami kids don't play outside if it's 30 outside because they don't have the clothing for it... Same logic.
And in boca they send out this psa when the temp dips below 60:

Re: Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving?
Beautifully said.

Unfortunately I've found that the concept you just stated exists only in chabad.
Or anywhere out side  of brooklyn and lakewood.
Its sad that we've  given the responsibility of chiniuch exclusively to the schools, to the extent that we can't  tolerate having someone in our kids schools that is  slightly diffrent than us.  we are paralyzed and have no way of imparting to our kids  what we believe  is important if they should c"v see something slightly diffrent.

Re: The Pros And Cons Of Where You Live

Wow, thanks so much for the quick responses! surprised no Cleveland suggestions  ;D
Too far (approx 1.5 hour commute to battery park, plus must take into account need to have second car to drive to closest station etc) also, LIRR commute is pretty expensive.
somewhat far (approx 1.2 hour commute to battery park), though not as costly as N Woodmere. also didnt get a great vibe for modox peeps when i visited (more of a frummer/black hat feel it seemed).
possibility, but is there a growing modox community?
I am not actually dying, just a lil sad that there arent better options in the tri-state area when i take a discerning gaze at the relevant communities.
I live in Willowbrook, Staten Island. I have a great commute to downtown (35/40 minutes on one express bus for $6.50 after metrocard bonuses), but modox community is dying and schools are weak (esp the lack of any high school options for girls on island).
I want a lot, but u would think an "in-town" area like NY would have a place with good schools in walking/short bus-ride distance, with 4br houses with basements (for guests) and backyards around $1m.
i would drive if it would save time but that seems unlikely. Was toying with living in 5 towns, getting an electric car and driving in the HOV lane on the LIE but not sure how fast that really is...

Oy, you shouldn't need to spend $1m for that. If you would be willing to compromise  a little on some of those requirements.
I paid less than half of that, I have 4 bedrooms, finished basement with a guest suite, over a 1/4 acre property. But I'm not walking distance to schools. We also wouldnt consider our community a mo communtiy although we are very welcoming to all people.

Re: Do you Daven?
I heard of an exercise to do with children to help them grow in their attachment to Hashem that I found to be helpful as an adult.
Each day write down something good that Hashem has done for you. (I recently read that writing 3 good things down each day, helps grow a good attitude.)
Each day write down something you did that shows your 'strength' - an accomplishment or 'kovesh es yitzro' type of action.
When you pay attention, you see how Hashem is with you every step of the way.  This may help some people have more energy to daven.
This is something we try to do with our kids too, with a slight variation,  we talk about the best and worst part(s) of everyone's day. It definitly helps the kids  (and myself) gain perspective. It also is a great catalyst for meaningful conversation with your kids and helps get some insight into how they feel. If I would just ask them how thier day was, I'd get a one or two word amswer.

Re: Why is our divorce rate rising drastically?
Let me ask a crazy question. Is this so bad? What's more important, staying married or being happy? As Louis CK once said "no good marriage has ever ended in divorce."
So rephrase the ops question: "why are more people unhappy in their marriage?"

Re: Why is our divorce rate rising drastically?
Before talking about how today's kids are whatever think back on your mind what your parents or grandparents thought when you were that age.
In fact I argue that kids today are more resilient than ever before, after all they were raised by our (inept) generation.

Re: Pesach Programs and False Advertising
Well. You actually posted two ads, for two different programs, AND NEITHER OF THEM LISTS THE NAME OF THE HASHGOCHO! (except if Zika Free is the latest Badatz Mehadrin...).

The fact that such programs fill up without even feeling the need to put a reputable name that people can rely upon for the Kashrus on Pesach is simply amazing.
Why are you assuming no one inquires about thr hashgacha when they call for more info? There's also no pricing on the smillow ad, do you question how people can go to these programs withoit even knowing what its going to cost them?

Re: Torah stuff that doesnt make sense
Would this be correct? You can question things for the purpose of understanding why they are true but not question if they are true?
You can question if something is true, but in order to do so you must have a great deal of knowledge on the topic. Like @timt s post, it would be ludicrous for some non college educated guy to disagree with a doctors recommendations, based on years of research, to get vaccinated. He can question why, and try with his limited knowledge, to understand the subject at hand, but to have an opinion on the veracity of vaccination is misguided at best.

Re: So Big Bang theory needs.....Emunah
I am confused. His point was science is another form of religion?
His point was that they hide behind behind their claim to be the alternative to religion  and are based off of logical well researched facts (science)  but if you dig a little deeper it really requires a huge leap of faith in the different  theories and is no more grounded than their views on religion.
But it removes shibud making it alot more appealing.

Butcher paper allows more moisture out so you still end up with  semi solid bark.
The few times I've used butcher paper have made a significant difference.

I have these in stock for sale:
SAS 1860 N95 - 7000 PIECES
SAS 8611 N95 - 2000 PIECES

There are hospitals with severe shortages of these masks, medical personnel who are at the forefront trying to save ppls lives need these more than anyone else. Maybe see if you can get these to some of the hospitals.

Its not really him, but It gets me really mad that my wife and other hospital personnel  have to risk there lives every day at the hospital, cant call out for any reason at this point and cant get there hands on a mask because people have been hording them to make a few dollars.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread

In US? Where?

My daughter tells me that results from a few days of testing IGG immunity are rolling in on antibody tests and they are very weird. People who tested negative on nasal swab COVID tests multiple times are positive for antibodies and healthcare workers who were absolutely exposed to many many people with positive symptoms are testing negative for antibodies.

Mount sinai south nassau.  As with everything covid-19 related information, its probably to soon to be close to conclusive yet.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
All I can say is my daughter, an RN treating confirmed positive patients left and right, has had symptoms like cough, slight fever, loss of taste and smell yet...tested negative for antibodies.
Seems consistent with everything else related to covid-19 - nothing makes sense.
Although cant it just be that  she hasn't fully recovered yet and developed those antibodies?

Re: SBA PPP and EIDL Small Business Loans (some money is forgivable)
This is what banks were/are getting:
In the CARES Act:
A .5% fee on loans below $350,000.00
A .3% fee on loans between $350,001.00 and $2,000,000.00
A 1% fee on loans between $2,000,001.00 and higher

In the Response and Relief Package:
A 50% fee on loans below $50,000.00 (capped at $2,500)
A 5% fee on loans between $50,001.00 and $350,000.00
A 3% fee on loans between $350,001.00 and $2,000,000.00

CRAZY increase.
Keep in mind this is what the banks get, EU is a broker and they only get a portion of that and are passing on 20% of their portion.
