Re: What kind of Gemach is needed (in Lakewood)?
A while ago I was thinking about a rent-a-sefer type of thing.

Basically going to the big yeshivas at the end of the zman and getting all the popular newish leftover seforim that get left there. Then renting out each Sefer for a dollar a month.

Obviously have the person leave a cc number in case of damage...

Might be an idea just I guess don't charge the dollar each month. As far as I know I don't think there's such a thing yet.
That's what Capital Seforim does, he just sells them for cheap instead of renting or lending.

Re: Amazon HQ2
So why not just give them the $3 billion in incentive? How does $3 billion in incentives effect you, but $30 billion in revenue not.. that’s upside down.
The fact that NY needs to bribe amazon to come to NY is proof that NY is not very inviting for business in general. For every job that would be gained by amazon, there may very well be multiple jobs created if NY would offer the same incentives to all businesses (currently in NY or interested in moving to NY), it just doesn't come in one big swoop like amazon. It's a slap in the face to all businesses in NY to admit that it's too expensive to do business in NY, but since you don't help us brag that we brought jobs to the city we'll continue making life difficult for you but make it easy for the behemoth. If that's not called picking winners and losers I don't know what is.

Re: Amazon HQ2
One way of getting in the way of those creating jobs, is to ignore them when they offer a great deal.
The reason amazon needs a "good deal" to move to NY is because NY is getting in the way of anyone who would create jobs, the solution to that is to get out of everyone's way, not just the big behemoth.

It never was taught until after the war and even then it was a big chidush. I believe R' Moshe was matir among others due to the law necessitating it. But I'm not sure that was the reason.
When talking about why his mesivta has english, R' Reuven Feinstein says it's better to learn english than to learn to waste time.

Re: Adding Financial Literacy Courses In Yeshivas

That is a dangerous statement. If something is broken, do you endeavor to fix it or do you fill the gap with something that might have other negative effects?

What's broken about children being children? It's not normal for a 9th grader to be able to sit and learn all day.

What's the issue with learning math, English, and science?

That is a bigger issue. Bad enough that kids think it's ok to riot and damage property, worse if adults are ok with it, no matter the justification.
The overwhelming majority (especially the first night) were not rioting or damaging property. I don't see an issue with adults being OK with their kids peacefully protesting in front of this guys house.

Re: Vaccine Discussion Master Thread
Well in theory it does I believe. They are just not thinking clearly. Anyone  who is anti vaccines who says "bring it on" to measles is clearly too uneducated and should be vaccinated IMO.

They also aren't understanding how vaccines work or thinking about how their choices could affect others.  Chances are high that if you got measles you'd be fine at the end of the day but that doesn't mean there is no risk to a healthy individual and for sure not to those with compromised immune systems.

So many of these people speaking in the media have such wrong attitudes when it comes to the measles themselves. It makes me cringe.
The most compelling reason to vaccinate for measles is to protect those with compromised immune systems. That being said, if someone doesn't want to vaccinate they should at least get the measles in a controlled setting and stay at home until they're no longer contagious rather than go out and pass it on.

Re: serious question: chol hamoed & measles
so if all of Rockland county is vaccinated, at 97% effectiveness, with a population of 311,000 at 3% equals 9330, and we only have 186 confirmed cases.

""Rockland county is currently dealing with 186 confirmed measles cases. New York City has had 329 cases since October. In just the last two weeks, Westchester has confirmed ten cases."""

Looks to me that we are doing wonderful, why all the noise??????????

Disclosure: I had measles in the 70's, my whole class did, 1 of my classmates passed away a few years ago due to a heart attack
Why are you pushing intentionally misleading information? In order for everyone to be protected (including those who are unable to get vaccinated and the 3% who are not immune even after being vaccinated) you need herd immunity which is achieved when the odds of passing on a virus are lower than the odds of contacting someone who is susceptible If 1 in 20 people are not immune, and the average person only comes in contact with 19 people then an outbreak is impossible. If 1 in 10 is susceptible, that means that every infected person will pass it on to 2 people (on average) and that leaves you with an outbreak. In short the selfish people who refuse to vaccinate are putting those who can't vaccinate (infants and those with compromised immune systems) in grave danger.

Re: Vaccine Discussion Master Thread The biggest issue IMO is people who suddenly become talmidim of RSK because they like his shitta on vaccines. In other words did these people start following him before they were anti-vax or did they start following him because they are anti-vax.

Re: Vaccine Discussion Master Thread
If there's a 95%+ vaccination rate it never gets to spread
That's not necessarily true. There is a concept called herd immunity which is believed to be reached somewhere between 90-95%, but 95% is not a magic number. If jewish people mingle much more than average, herd immunity may not be reached even at 95%

Your own source contradicts that assertion. Both 2018 and 2017 show one 3rd trimester abortion "due to a Life Endangering Physical Condition" (ie danger to the mother).
Just because it was done does not mean it was needed. When the mothers life is in danger in the 3rd trimester there are 2 options abortion and delivery, both would save the mothers life, but only one gives the baby a chance to live.

Re: Future US tax policy
Did you hear complaints how they owed this and didn't the year before?
That's one of the dumbest arguments I've heard, whether you get a refund or owe when you file taxes is not the way to measure how the tax cut affected you. The only number that matters is your total tax liability. Bringing home more every pay check but then owing money at the end of the year does not mean the tax cut was bad.

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread
That wasn't my point. My point is this:
- It's difficult for google to police every restaurant that uses the keywords 'Jewish or Kosher' - even if the website makes it clear that they aren't kosher, but kosher/jewish style.

- Even if google could police those terms better, it legally can't eliminate a restaurant that has a hashgacha of any kind, regardless of how reputable any particular person thinks it is.

Being cognizant of the differences in minhagim and chumras, it's almost impossible to verify that every 'kosher' restaurant meets your standard. For example, there are those that have a minhag to only eat cheese that's been pasteurized at a temperature over 212 degrees F. Even if you searched for 'Kosher Cholov Yisroel Pizza'. You'd still probably a get a significant number of them that were not using "212 Cheese".

The bottom line - search or no search, you need to check the kashrus of any place you eat at and not rely on a search.
I don't have an issue with there being restaurants that meet different standards on the list, but by adding non kosher restaurants to the list it makes it more difficult for kosher consumers to find an establishment that meets their needs.

All of this is a distortion of Jewish music. Traditionally Jewish music has always been to use music to bring out the feeling of the words. Chazzanus was always a musical interpretation of the words. When anything goes as long as the words have some sort of Jewish source (or has no Jewish source but is simply sung by a Jew) this is where you start getting Shir Hashirim to put on sackcloth and complain about being made into a bar song.

Re: New FICO Scoring Changes Changes in how the most widely used credit score in the U.S. is calculated will likely make it harder for many Americans to get loans.

Fair Isaac Corp., FICO -1.19% creator of FICO scores, will soon start scoring consumers with rising debt levels and those who fall behind on loan payments more harshly. It will also flag certain consumers who sign up for personal loans, a category of unsecured debt that has surged in recent years.

The changes will create a bigger gap between consumers deemed to be good and bad credit risks, the company says. Consumers with already-high FICO scores of about 680 or higher who continue to manage loans well will likely get a higher score than under previous FICO versions. Those with already-low scores below 600 who continue to miss payments or accumulate other black marks will experience bigger score declines than under previous models.
Keeping ScoreAverage U.S. FICO scoreSource: Fair Isaac Corp.
April 2012x690
FICO Changes Could Lower Your Credit Score

Millions of consumers could see their scores rise or fall as a result of the changes, the company said.

The changes are an about-face from recent years, when FICO and credit-reporting companies made changes that helped increase scores for some consumers, such as removing some negative information, including civil judgments, from credit reports.

Credit scoring and reporting companies also recently started factoring in such information as bank account balances and utilities payments to help give consumers with limited credit histories a better shot at getting loans.

Those recent moves can help revenue-hungry lenders identify more creditworthy consumers and make it easier for them to be approved for loans. Average FICO scores have been rising steadily following some of these changes and an improving economy.

The U.S. consumer borrowing industry revolves around companies such as FICO, which help lenders decide whom to lend to. Credit-reporting firms including Experian PLC, Equifax Inc. and TransUnion collect data on consumers and compile it in consumers’ credit reports, which then determine their FICO scores.

The new FICO changes reflect a shift in U.S. lenders’ confidence in the economy, which has been expanding for more than 10 years. Consumer loan losses remain low compared with during the last recession, but consumer debts are at record highs, with many Americans forced to rely on debt to help fund their everyday lives.

Lenders in recent years had asked the credit-reporting and scoring companies to help them find more borrowers. But lenders are also trying to balance the need to expand loan volume with a rising concern about the longevity of the economic recovery and whether credit scores are making some consumers appear more creditworthy than they are.

“There are some lenders that see there are problems on the horizon in terms of consumer performance or uncertainty [about] how long this [recovery] is going to go,” said David Shellenberger, vice president of scores and predictive analytics at FICO. “We definitely are finding pockets of greater risk.”

On an earnings call last year, Capital One Financial Corp. Chief Executive Richard Fairbank warned that consumers across the industry might not be as creditworthy as their scores suggest.

Missed payments and most other negative information that would hurt a score typically roll off a report after seven years, which means lenders might not have insight into how a consumer fared during the crisis, he said.

The changes will affect new versions of the FICO scores. FICO updates its scoring model every few years to reflect changes in consumer borrowing behavior and performance. When it last announced such changes, in 2014, they were viewed as likely to help boost consumers’ credit scores.

Whether to adopt the new FICO scores will be up to lenders, which can generally decide which version of FICO to use or whether to use a competitor such as VantageScore. (There are some exceptions: For example, most lenders use a certain version of the FICO score to sell mortgages to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. )

One of the new versions, called FICO 10 T, will place greater weight on recently missed payments. Consumers who fall behind or stop paying their debts are likely to see their credit scores fall more with this model. Those whose last delinquency is at least a year old could see an improvement in their scores.

The changes are meant to partly offset the effects of settlements between credit-reporting firms and states that date to 2015. Those settlements, aimed at removing erroneous information from credit reports, resulted in Equifax, Experian and TransUnion removing most tax liens and judgments from reports.

Unlike previous FICO scores, 10 T will assess how consumers’ debt levels have changed during the past two or so years. FICO scores so far have reflected consumers’ balances during roughly the most recent month tracked. This change will place more weight on rising debt levels. Consumers who previously paid their credit-card bills in full but shift to carrying growing balances for several months will likely end up with a lower score. On the other hand, consumers who tend to increase card debt during a specific month each year and then pay it off quickly will likely experience a smaller drop in their score than they currently do.

The changes will likely hurt scores even more for consumers who have a high “utilization” ratio—for example, when credit-card debt is nearly equal to a consumer’s set spending limit—for a sustained period of time.

FICO for the first time will place more weight on personal loans in a way that penalizes some borrowers. For example, consumers who transfer credit-card debt to a personal loan but continue to rack up credit-card balances will likely experience a bigger drop in their credit scores.

This. The reason every candidate always won their home state is simply because if they won statewide office (US Senate or Governor), they clearly have support in their home state. If they weren't popular in their own state they wouldn't make it too far in the primaries.

+1000, additionally if Person A touched a door etc. it can easily have spread to many people. I think even with awareness the chances of everyone "doing everything right" is very low.
