Greece Master Thread I'm considering going to Greece this summer with my wife.
There isn't a master thread, I was wondering if anyone had any input advice etc.

PS. My other options are Paris, or Milan (neither of us have ever been) with Hyatt FFNs, so feel free to tell me that I'm crazy and should just hit one of those cities.

It would be a 4-5 day stay

Re: A picture is worth.... "gornisht"?
the whole thing is a huge chilul hashem.
Is it a chilul hashem when ppl walk to shul on Yom kippur in a suit and sneakers?

I don't believe they did anything wrong (picture permission aside, which was clearly a mistake). There policy may be a little extreme, but come to think of it, when was the last time there was a picture of a women on DansDeals?

My view of this, is that the world media is WAAAY to extreme to the other end of the spectrum. So why the big fuss if someone goes extreme to our end?

Need help finding a ticket? Post here! Award ticket edition (Master thread) Please follow the following rules when posting in this thread. Failure to do so may result in you request being ignored or deleted.

FAQs: (if you are looking to purchase a ticket, please post here)

Q: How many miles will my USA-TLV ticket cost?
Q: How can I use my credit card points to book a USA-TLV ticket?

A: Please read Dan's very helpful and informative guides found here and here

Q: Do I have to pay a lot of money when using miles for a ticket?

A: Sometimes. For more information read this

Q: How do I find award availability?
A: For Star Alliance (Continental, United, USairways, AirCanada, Lufthansa, Swiss, and others) see this guide

For OneWorld (AmericanAirlines, BritishAirways, Iberia, Malev, and more) You can use BA's award search engine (you need to have a free BA account to access the engine). In addition you can use Qantas' engine (free account needed as well), which will (to an extent) search Elal. As of this posting, the Elal business flights that show up are coach, and vice verse.

For Delta and AirFrance, use their respective sites. While not perfect, they are quite manageable for the casual searcher.

And of course, many of us here will take time out to help someone who is trying to learn.

Q: All this searching is making me crazy. Is there an easier way?
A: Yes, but it might cost you. Check out,, and

Q: I see AirCanada availability, but when I call AirCanada they say I can't use my Continental miles with them. Aren't they partners?
A: You can only use miles with the airline that issued them. Through that airline (in our case Continental) they can issue a ticket on a partner (ie AirCanada). Trying to call AirCanada with Continental miles, is like trying to use shekels in Mexico.

Q: I can't find availability on my dates. What should I do?
A: You should try to be as flexible as possible. Can you add a stop or 2? Can you be more flexible with your dates? The airports?
If all else fails keep trying. Availability is constantly opening up.

Q: Can someone please help me find a ticket?
A: No! Find it yourself.  ;D ;D Just kidding. Please copy the following lines, and fill it out in your post.

One way/Round trip:
Non-stop/Maximum stops/Any:
From: All airports from which you can depart
To: All airports which you can arrive at. For multiple destinations, just keep adding this line
Departure dates: All possible dates that you can depart on. Please be as specific as possible.
Return airports:
If different from 'To' line. Delete this line for One way tickets
Return dates: Delete this line for One way tickets
Class: First/Business/Coach/Any
Seats: Total number of people traveling over the age of 2
Alliance/Airline: What airline or alliance are you looking to fly with

Please add any other information you feel might be useful

Re: What Are The Top 10 Places You've Been To?
1)   Atlantic City-Donít remember any of it but BíH we managed to hitch a ride home. Still trying to piece together the rest of it
2)   Los Angeles- Went collecting there with a bunch of Chevra on Purim. Rented a convertible and blasted music all day. Yeshiva took a 10k loss and now gets paid by a local Baal Habus not to send guys there. Need I say more?
3)   California-Would highly recommend for anyone going to L.A. Nature is amazing
4)   San Diego-Had to show my passport to get in, but cheap beer and ATVíing canít be beat. Also known as Tijuana
5)   Las Vegas- Didnít really go there but tell everyone I did because we flew over it on the way to L.A.
6)   Hunter Mountain-Skiing+Cheap Beer=Free Snowmobile Rides
7)   ESPN Zone (Anywhere)-Not sure why, but the girls I take usually think itís a bit much for a first date (Sore losers)
8)   Shea Stadium-Especially fun this summer when Stubhub actually paid you to go. Much better hot dogs than Yankee Stadium
9)   Montreal-Went to friends Chasuna there and learnt  French curse words. 3 speeding tickets in each direction. Anti Semites at the border told us that Niagra Falls was on the way to Toronto. Is Canada really that big?
10)   Woodbury Commons-By a small margin over Jersey Gardens (during the zman) and Franklin Mills (Bein Hazmanim)

Re: Nice Stories that bring a smile
I will start, someone just told me this story that happened to their MIL:

This story happenend in a pizzaria in clevaland!! This guys MIL (lets call her mrs k) works in kiruv that sends girls to israel to find themselves. Well one day this lady met up with a mother of one of those girls. She said to mrs k, i wish i can go to israel too. I feel so connected that i must go to. But, its VERY expensive, but i try only spending on cc, in order to get to israel. So this lady and mrs k kept of talking about how she will get to israel on spending money and racking up points... It came out that it would take a yr or so....someone sitting behind them turned around and said "i can't help over hearing your situation, you do not need to spend on cc, rather you need sign up bonuses," and this wonderful helpful person went on and explained for quiet a while how she needs to maximize sign ups and so on... The ladies said how do you know so much.... To which he said...............

But from what i was just told, they were so grateful for this person to take so much time out of his day to help out!
And the next part is also a bit nuts - mrs k told her SIL who she just met. This SIL ran to the pizzeria. But to no a avail. He then ran to the grocery down the block found this person and continued to pick at his brain. And this SIL walked away and said wow what a mentch!!!
.... and then they got married?!

Re: Jokes. Any type goes. Whats the difference between mashed potatoes, and pea soup? THE JEWISH QUARTERBACK

The coach had put together the perfect team for the Detroit Lions. The only thing that was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges and even the Canadian and European Leagues, but he couldn't find a ringer who could ensure a Super Bowl win.

Then one night while watching CNN he saw a war-zone scene in the West  Bank . In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Israeli soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand-grenade straight into a 15th story window 100 yards away.  KABOOM!

He threw another hand-grenade 75 yards away, right into a chimney.  KA-BLOOEY!

Then he threw another at a passing car going 90 mph.

"I've got to get this guy!" Coach said to himself. "He has the perfect arm!"

So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football. And the Lions go on to win the Super Bowl.

The young man is hailed as the great hero of football, and when the coach asks him what he wants, all the young man wants is to call his mother.

"Mom," he says into the phone, "I just won the Super Bowl!"

"I don't want to talk to you, the old woman says."You are not my son!"

"I don't think you understand, Mother," the young man pleads. "I've won the greatest sporting event in the world.  I'm here among thousands of my adoring fans."

"No! Let me tell you!" his mother retorts. "At this very moment, there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and I have to keep your sister in the house so she doesn't get attacked!"  The
old lady pauses, and then tearfully says,..........

"I will never forgive you for making us move to Detroit!!!!

PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others Over the past few months many stories have come to my attention of people swiping for companies or people, and getting scammed to the tune of $100k+ each.

I'm not saying you can't offer to put something on your credit card for someone, but be smart. Even the most honest trustworthy people can hit a rough patch and be unable to pay back.

The specific stories I've been told were of out right scammers. Some had a great reputation, and were part of a community.

Bottom line - At the very least, consider swiping for someone an investment with risk. Don't put down more money than you can afford to lose. Even million dollar companies go under. Ask yourself, are you really willing to risk $20-50k and up for a few points?

If you believe you can trust someone, you should still have a hard limit in the range you can afford to lose, and don't go over it. The guy has truckloads of cash? Then let him prepay you, or put the money in escrow.

This is a very serious matter. Lives have been ruined. You've been warned.

Please don't PM for details. They won't be answered

Can you please explain what this is and isnt?

I cant seem to figure it out from the site.
Just a way to create normal looking documentation with all the flight info to send to clients.

It's great for personal use as well. For example, a few months ago I booked my father-in-law roundtrip domestic, one way with Avios, one way UA miles. Instead of giving him 2 papers, I just punched in the dates, flight numbers and reservation/ticket numbers and he had everything he needed in 1 place

There a difference between good service and waiting forever. I've been to plenty of restaurants here where you don't feel like you're waiting forever. Also , found the service at Rodriguez to be very good
Funny thing is when I went, we weren't at all impressed by the food, but the service was amazing. I guess like most places in Israel they're consistently inconsistent.

LB is my go to, and I find it 90% consistent, and very solid food. Small menu, but most of it is really good. Service is pretty consistently good

Was a quick reaction. Said nothing wrong or incorrect (except that i think its not most that do have a hechsher). The reaction just coming from a place where i personally know at least 6 of these catering services wouldn't be חושש for a second. However my reaction is coming from peraonally knowing them so the above comment is very true . Even as an american tourist coming to israel, you cant assume that all these services are top knotch hechsher-wise. I retract my comment/reaction.

Re: Delta to tlv opening May 8 I'm not fluent enough in halacha to answer, but lets try to take our negious out of it for a minute.

Case 1) Someone comes to me, buys a ticket to a movie at a theater I don't own, I just sell tickets for on commission. He shows up and the show was cancelled. I don't want to refund the purchase. Any halachic issue to dispute?
Case 2) I sell the ticket, and the theater processes the payment. He shows up, and there is no show. He disputes the charge, and the theater comes after me. Any issue with him disputing it?

If someone buys something, and doesn't get it back, they are due their money back from whoever they paid it to. Everything else is between the TA and the airline.
The anomaly here is force majeure, which might release TA/Airline from responsibility, but other than that I don't see why the customer has to worry about what damage he's doing to others if the money is rightfully theirs

Re: Great Twitter Accounts to Follow
Although the Random/Funny/Interesting Tweet thread is flourishing, this thread has a different purpose. This is where DDFers can suggest Twitter accounts that they recommend others to follow. This will generally be an account that is replete with quality tweets, and also won't flood your timeline.

When you recommend an account, please note what/who is it and who may enjoy that account. I would like to create a wiki at some point where recommended accounts can be categorized, so describing why you recommend it is important.

Here are some I recommend:

Great frum conservative commentary: (Eli Steinberg, an askan and writer)

Great frum media personalities: (Turx)
@YochiDonn (Yochanon Donn)
@themishpacha (Ami's Shloime Zionce)

Great frum humor accounts:
@PinchusL (Pinchus Lurkowitz of the Crockpot Show)
@MendyTV (Mendy Pellin)

Practical accounts:
@ReminderChild (send's a reminder about kid in car every day at 9:30)

Lakewood news:
@newsguz (APP's Lakewood reporter)
@OneJerseySchorr (Shlomo Schorr, Lakewood Shopper)
@ReporterMoshe (Moshe Zeines, crossing guard and LNN reporter)

Thanks, appreciate the shoutout, but it's actually @chaikelK on Twitter ;)

Re: What Would You Change About El Al/Matmid (2021 Edition)? Lord knows I'm no fan of Elal, I'm definitely not one to defend them, but Matmid is one of the few things in Elal I actually think makes sense (:o). Not perfect, but not something in need of a major overhaul.

Most airlines, particularly US based airlines, have a wide demographic and can afford lucrative opportunities in their frequent flyer programs that a small percentage of their base will exploit. Elal on the other hand, and I say this with all due respect and as both a Jew and a DDF member, has a demographic that is shall we say, "always looking for a deal". This makes a lucrative frequent flyer program much less profitable than a legacy US carrier that relies on high levels of spoilage and poor redemption values.
Additionally, pre-Covid, Elal had a very low number of seats go empty, which is pretty unique for an airline. When you're likely to sell the seat as a revenue ticket, "giving away" inventory for awards is more expensive than other airlines that can safely assume that seat will be empty regardless.

We have to understand that Elal is a business like any other, and expecting them to offer with nothing in return is preposterous. So when you think of how Elal can make their program better, what you have to think is how Elal can make more money off Matmid not less.

Traditionally frequent flyer programs generate revenue for an airline in one of two ways. 1. Printing miles to sell to partners (such as banks), 2. Gaining/retaining loyal customers. So off the bat, yes, Elal needs a lot of help in 1. And saying a better Matmid program will attract more people towards earning Matmid points and therefore allow Elal to sell more points, while true is a simple math equation. Per point they need to be profiting. If the program is overly lucrative to the point that they can be making more money on the seats being redeemed than they are selling the points, it's a loss for them. So putting 1. aside for now, I'd like to focus on 2.

Whose loyalty is Elal looking for?
Well you have the budget/infrequent traveler. While they may collect and utilize every point they can, ultimately what attracts them is the 3 Ps (not provided by the SBA), price price price. So no Matmid incentive for Elal there
Then there are the frequent/corporate travelers, the golden goose of the airline industry. Well those customers care about route networks and comfort/care. Yes, all things equal they may take the frequent flyer program into account, but at the end of the day it's about the service.
You see Elal doesn't have a direct competitor. They are either convenient or not. Yes, someone sticking to the flagship NYC route will have competition to choose from, but for the vast majority of those customers it will come down to soft and hard product, and timetables, which are not comparable.

In summary, I don't see how Matmid will help them compete.

Simplify. Simplify. Simplify
Interesting. I would say Matmid has one of the simpler programs out there. Comparing them to the dynamic, multiple level pricings of most programs these days, Elal seems to be of the simplest. Unless you are referring to the technology, yes. Elal is sorely lacking in the technology department, but hey, that's most companies in The Startup Nation.

1) Multiply earning rates and redemption rates by 50 to be in line with other mileage currencies.
2) Add the ability to change and cancel bookings online.
1) Semantics. It's the same value, just looks different. I'm not saying they shouldn't make their program look more like other programs, but at the end of the day What's the difference if you earn 1 point per flight and require 50 for a free flight, or if you earn 500 per flight and require 2500 for a redemption. It may look shinier, but it's still the same program. Al Zeh Nemar putting lipstick on a pig.
2) Absolutely. But they should have that ability for rev flights first. The goes back to technology, see above

1) Get rid of points' expiration
2) Align elite benefits with other airlines, including systemwide upgrades, and dedicated fares to book award space

Has LY reached out to you?
1) This targets the budget flier that cares about price above all else. What does Elal gain by catering their program to that demographic? They will just book with the lowest carrier the next time. In fact points from credit cards used to not expire. Because that was a demographic worth catering to.
2) Elal's Elite benefits are quite competitive. They are one of the most generous airlines for upgrades on the NYC-TLV route. Their award availability on that route is hands down the best of the 3 carriers that fly it. Awards are costly, and that is what keeps them open. In fact, their frequent fliers find that to be a major advantage of Elal, they are able to exercise their awards, as opposed to UA/DL which pre-Covid you could count the award space to TLV on a single hand.
The one tweak I can see beneficial to Elal here is to give elites greater award availability. It would obviously have to be restricted so that people couldn't just take advantage of that availability and use an elite account to do whatever they wanted to do.

And yes as @El Capitan rightfully flags, taxes and fees on award tickets are outrageous
$125 per way is far from outrageous. I will submit it is more than UA/DL, but outrageous?
This again comes down to for it to be a loyalty program, Elal has to keep availability open to their loyalists. If they're just gonna give seats away for pennies, it does them a disservice. YQ aside from giving Elal additional revenue that frequent fliers are willing to pay, it is also a barrier to the freeloaders

Also in the case we're already talking about fixing the program... Partnering with a US bank (Chase or Amex or Citi etc) wouldn't be a bad idea either
Yes! Figure out a way to print miles to generate revenue. This is an idea that is a win-win

I just realized while everyone is getting worked up about the matmid side OP @Dan asked about el al as well... While I risk stating the obvious my suggestions are as follows. Don't strand people in Athens for shabbos. Treat your customers as customers not as prisoners (yes even in Y ) and market aggressively

Also operationally from a standpoint of delays etc...

I think this sums it up...

I would start with them allowing you to publicly post the previous meeting you had with them
Operations/management. Yes, a lot of help is needed in that department

MIKVAH IN FIRST. is a must to compete with ARAB CLASS F SHOWERS ;D
Emirates has a 1 person at a time rule  ???

Nicer FA s.
Better food ( might as well make all the food mehadrin)
Cooler air on planes
the attitude
While thereís a ton of room for improvement, they were starting to make some serious headway. Even before Covid they had some serious regression here, but the new management seems to understand that this must be a focus.

I noticed part of the question is "while trying to survive". Meaning all suggestions are nice, but they may cost to implement.
A general good idea would probably to look at southwest, they have a pretty economic yet decent experience, although obviously there are lackings and they aren't exactly the best comparison.
;D ;D ;D
Someone gets it

On a serious note my suggestions would be:

1. Align currency with other airlines.
2. Add airline redemption partners.
3. Simplify awards and expand them to reflect #2.
4. Provide a way (or ways) to avoid mileage expiration.
1. See above
2. YES!
3. Not sure how much simpler they can be (see above)
4. While I have mentioned expiration above, the idea of giving a customer an opportunity to Ďearní a longer expiration is something that does make sense.

The concept of complimentary upgrade doesn't exist.

They will only upgrade if they have overbooked, and even in these cases they try to squeeze a few points for the upgrade.

They can also introduce upgrade certificates for elites, which could be used across most fares and award tickets.

At the moment TP receive upgrade vouchers which are basically worthless since they can only be used in Y and M fares.
No airline complimentary upgrades their elites on TLV routes

Join 1 of the 3 Major Airline Alliances
They would love to. *A/*S are direct competitors. *O not that interested as they have partners in the region. Up until now Elal hasnít had much to offer route wise, but possibly that will change with the new agreements.

Re: What Would You Change About El Al/Matmid (2021 Edition)?
Can't book codeshare flights with points.

And now for example ppl with were booked to MIA direct, due to flight cancellations cash bookings are rebooked through NY (with NY-MIA on b6 codeshare), but award bookings are simply rebooked to NY and it's up to the passenger to worry about the last leg
Most airlines do not book codeshare on awards. What you're referring to is reprotection, which is the airline's responsibility regardless of how it was booked. I would contact Elal and explain that to them. If you need some help, PM me
