what do the chinese people expect? that the government let it spread even more? its a difficult situation but if it would be in the U.S. wouldn't it spread faster because of political correctness?

im trying to think what, if anything, makes sense in this situation ???

Re: Will the truth come out how this administration made blunder after blunder? Wait, is anyone of the position here that the federal government did not botch up the response to the emergence of Covid-19? If even we DDFers were apprehensive about it in early January and @yuneeq had sounded the alarms and put together a response plan, why didn't the federal government which is tasked with safeguarding its citizens do even the basics to keep this virus out of our borders and contained? Nevermind, that they botched up even later when it was apparent to all already the grave dangers that the virus posed.

Re: Corona virus and your shull Just want to point out before I jump out of this thread, that not everyone who calls himself a Rav is indeed a Rav, and that it doesn't work like diplomatic immunity where you are immune to prosecution. Hashem will handle all those who cloak themselves with the cloak of piety and Torah, but are not worthy of it.

Re: Corona virus and your shull
How does it help to use foul language about some of the greatest talmidei chachomim of our generation?
It doesn't, but I don't see the same energy spent on an outcry about the minyanim taking place. @chevron is right to pull the alarm bells, and so should everyone. No should sit on their laurels and say, "what should I do?". "Who will listen to me?" "They know already." Etc.

Everyone has a responsibility to do whatever they could to save a life.

Re: Corona virus and your shull
Which part? That everyone has a responsibility to do whatever they can to save a life?
That @chevron is doing whatever he could to save a life, and I see a ton of energy spent on trying to get him to elucidate his thoughts in a proper fashion, but I don't see the same energy being spent on saving a life. Pick up the phone. Call your friends who might be joining such minyanim. Speak to your local Rav. Have him publicly speak out against such minyanim. Etc. Use all resources available to you to save a life.

putting myself aside.
People in the community do not use these services. Fact.
so they are anyway in the street. fact.
so if they make a minyan, its just the 1 time in the day, they do something justifiable.
It's not justifiable. They are not doing a mitzva period. They are just doing it because that's what they're used to. If they thought into it, they would never do it, because it's not a mitzvah.

Re: Corona virus and your shull

Re: Is your Shul Secretly Open Right Now?
That's your opinion, there are some that feel otherwise. I'm not one of the "some"  but I learned in life to respect others decisions regardless if I understand it or not.  While for the time being I don't agree  with their position I do get thier perspective.

You have a right to stay home and "protect yourself", others have a right to do as they wish if they are within the law. The government has a right to change the laws if they deem so is necessary.
Sorry, not everyone is entitled to have an opinion and abide by it.
The only issue is that ...
Wow. Please inform yourself before taking a position and making stupid decisions that endanger peoples' lives.

Re: Is your Shul Secretly Open Right Now?
For someone who never misses a minyan this is a truly troubling situation. Someone who misses minyanim for non essential travel will obviously not show up now, thus they aren't a proof of anything.

But if the guy who makes a minyan in these times can't get up for netz byichidus it proves he isn't either legit.
Not if your Rov is wrong. Do you think a Rov has some kind of mystical powers?
But in this case he is right. He follows the Torah that says that safek nefashos trumps most.
You're just proving @Dans point. That the reason they're doing it is because they are worshipping themselves and their "winning streaks", not Hashem.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
Love it. I bet most of these types during regular times will miss minyan for non-essential needs (e.g. travel for pleasure)
Could you stop with the missing minyan thing? We all know you wouldn't go anywhere where there isn't minyan three times a day and you wouldn't take any flight that makes you miss a Minyan.

April 13, 2020, 12:49:20 AM
Re: A goy does care.
Not hard. Challenging. Like missing minyan even though you really might not necessarily kill someone by going just this once
Now that you mention it, maybe this is why the Ari Zal says that you should be mekabel on yourself the Mitzva of Veahavta Lrea'acha komoicha before davening Shachris, so you won't go daven with a minyan and kill someone. (Derech Halotza, obviously).

Re: Halachik Status of Illegitimate Minyanim
I am curious with your opinion that porch minyanim in the US was cancelled for health reasons whereas in Israel it is being done legally EVERYWHERE and there are no issues. Why is one country different then another? the only reason I can see is Eiva. It makes no sense that people cant stand on their porches to daven for health reasons. If there was a health issue then dont go play in your yard either.
Because it's not only porch minyanim. People are standing around on the grass, too.

April 17, 2020, 01:46:34 AM
Re: Halachik Status of Illegitimate Minyanim
So you assir everything because a few people will break the rules? That makes no sense when it comes to davening with a minyan. If you can keep the rules then do it. If not then dont.
1. It's more than a few people. Almost every minyan turns out to be like that.
2. When it comes to Pikiach Nefesh you have to be very machmir.

Re: The science of COVID-19
Famous story from the Baal Shem Tov ( also heard it quoted b'shem someone else).. sure everyone has heard if not in summary:
מלך המות met the Baal Shem Tov at the start of Plague, BST asked him, "How many people do you plan on killing"?
מ״ה answered - 5,000. In the end 25,000 people died.
BST came back to the  מ״ה asked what happend I thought only 5,000 were supposed to die?
MH answered him- 5,000 did people did die from the plague, the rest were from panic.
Partially misquoted. Look in the Ben Ish Chai. Anyways people have to learn how to apply things properly.

Re: Unemployment Help
How can it be a dollar amount when everyone's base rate is different? 25% makes a lot of sense because for 3 days you receive 75% of your base rate, for 2 days 50%, for one day 25%, and at 0 days your at 0%.

What do you mean by saying benefits are increased by 20%? An increase in benefits for working more days and being less unemployed?
From NJ DOL website:
If your work hours were reduced, but not completely cut, you may still be able to collect Unemployment Insurance benefits.

NOTE: When claiming benefits, you must report your part-time wages when earned, even if you have not yet been paid.

How we calculate partial Unemployment Insurance benefits

When you claim your weekly benefit, you will let us know if you worked that week. We will ask how many hours you worked and how much you earned (gross) for that week.

To be eligible for partial benefits, you cannot work more than 80 percent of the hours normally worked in the job. For example, if you worked a 40-hour week, you won't be able to get benefits if you work more than 32 hours. If your employer offers additional hours that you choose not to accept, your benefits may be affected.

For any wages earned from any employer:

If you earn 20 percent or less of your weekly benefit rate from an employer, you can still receive your full benefit amount for that week. However, we will not pay you more than your weekly benefit rate.
Here's an example, using a weekly benefit rate (WBR) of $500. Let's say you worked a few days one week and earned $300. For $500, partial weekly benefit rate (PWBR) is $600.  Partial weekly benefit rate PLUS 20 percent.  You would receive $300 as your unemployment benefit for this week.  Your PWBR minus your earnings of $300 equals $300.
Let's take a look at another example. Let's say that one week you worked a few hours and earned $50. For a $500 WBR, your partial benefit rate is $600. $600 minus $50 equals $550. However, since we will never pay more than your WBR, which is $500, your benefit for this week $500. We're not penalizing you (cutting your benefits) because you were able to squeak out some more hours while you were collecting unemployment. We want to get you in the door to work even a little bit, since that's a step toward full reemployment.
If you earn more than 20 percent of your weekly benefit rate from an employer in a given week, your partial weekly benefit payment will be reduced dollar-for-dollar for all gross wages earned that week.
For example, if your weekly benefit rate is $200, your partial weekly benefit rate is $240 (20 percent more than $200.) If you earn $50 (gross) during a week, you would receive $190 in unemployment insurance benefits ($240 – $50 = $190).
Report your gross earnings and all hours worked for the week in which they were earned, not when they are paid.

I can tell you that in Lakewood the minyanim were shut down within 48 hours of a call for rabbonim with doctors. It was the same call together with many Lakewood doctors and Hatzolah to ask questions of infectious disease specialist.
The problem is not really Lakewood (despite the breathless news reports). It's BP and Willi where it's really bad.

Are those same jew haters that are reporting on the jews calling corona the wuhan virus or the Chinese virus?

We didn't start this virus, the chinese did, they should be getting the hate, not jews

Most of the liberal media won't call it the chinese/wuhan virus bc that's racist but that same media will blame the Jews whenever they could during these times
So this is a liberal/conservative issue, I thought you were saying it's a religious issue?

Seems like a lot of the blindfolded people are the ones who listen to some irresponsible pundits who to them everything is stinking politics.

New Jersey has no laws preventing children from being in stores. Shoprite, Walmart etc. do not stop kids from entering.
All the Jewish groceries in Lakewood do not allow anyone under 16 to enter. Only one adult per family, too.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
A question on the topic from a different angle.

Some neighborhoods allegedly have minyonim going on in a manner that is not adhering to the medical and legal guidelines (either in shuls with limited participants or on the streets without proper social distancing), some places (like Lakewood by and large) have outdoor minyonim with social distancing and some places (like passaic and five towns) have no minyonim at all.

Are there new people contracting the virus at a higher rate in the places that are being less careful?
You're not going to get any scientific answer to that. Just use your common sense. It's unbelievable that we have to literally bang the basics into peoples' heads.
