Re: Is there any good news in the fight against COVID-19?
Hamodia
By Shmuel Smith
Wednesday, May 20, 2020
Isaac Ben-Israel, chairman of Israel’s Space Agency and a prominent mathematician, told The Times of Israel on Thursday that his prediction about the trajectory of the coronavirus has been confirmed by events.
I didn't want to quote the whole thing, but it sounds like this guy has a more than healthy amount of hubris.

Re: Is it time to reopen the country? To all those saying there is no difference between being locked down and not, give me a break. The reason why in NY it didn't help as much because the government was way too late to implement it. It's obvious as day, and I'm not sure why this had to be said.

Re: What are your thoughts as you return to shul? I definitely won't be making a kiddish upon reopening as I think that's horribly insensitive to the fact that over a thousand Jews lost their lives due to this Mageifa.

Re: Corona virus and your shul Whatever Trump says should have no bearing on what we do. We should only return to shul when it is safe to do so, and in a safe manner. I like the lead some communities and shuls are taking as quoted in the other thread. It is refreshing to see strong and clear leadership.

Does anyone know how much taxes/fees this would amount to?
5.60 OW within the US usually.

Was that just now?

I'm still waiting for results, both from me and from DW. Called them at 3 pm today and they said that they were all sent out, but they are sending them out again in a little while.

Still nothing. Checked spam, promotions. Nothing.
An hour or two ago.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
How can you compare a time when a vast majority wasn't yet exposed and there was no chance of "herd immunity" to a time when the vast majority has been exposed?
You don't get immune from being exposed.

IMHO that is a DIRECT result of excessive restrictions going on for too long.
More like a direct result of stupidity.

Until it is screamed from the rooftops with levayos they won't believe it just like purim time.
"Nah, what are you talking about!? Everyone says it's over for weeks already. This shul was open all along and no one died in that shul".

True statement from a Mashgiach in a Yeshiva who decided to open. Hashem Yishmor.

The way I look at it is, are these same Rabbanim meikil on most other things, or are they machmirim elsewhere? Explains if it's a kula or a chumra.
Keep on burying your head in the sand and bringing in politics. I'm sure the dead bodies will appreciate it.

The fearmongering on this thread is unfreakinbelivable.
You are all going to die. Hopefully after 120 or more years.
A lot of lives would have been saved if not for the fearmongering.
Yes, Dr. D..... and others, you have Yiddish blood on your hands.

Anyone should be able to understand that the risk to young healthy people is negligible.
And then people find out that they are not actually perfectly healthy. Did you perhaps already forget how many young people died in the last 2 months?

Re: yeshivas that are open @avromie7

Why do you keep on saying that young people "shouldn't live in fear"?

Does taking precautions to not be exposed mean living in fear? I don't see why you have to be anxious about it. Just don't do foolhardy things. Being exposed to a novel virus is a foolhardy thing to do.

Re: Antisemitism related to Coronavirus
Since when do elephants have patience?
Since I woke up every few minutes this night anxious that I won't miss my 7:30 porch minyan. See @avromie7? The virus causes young people to be anxious.  :P

Re: yeshivas that are open
I don't think that he is advocating throwing away all precautions.
Right. I don't think I said he was. But I think that being careful and not going to an indoors minyan at this point is a valid move and we should not be casting such an individual as anxious.
The discussion started about someone who was very cautious and is now afraid to go out to daven with a minyan. That person is living in fear, I'm sure there are many other people who are taking precautions and not living in fear.

Re: Heroes Blog Here! Agreed to all of the above. I think I mentioned this before but a lot of us owe our early awareness to @yuneeq and to @chevron. They moved mountains to bring awareness of what was coming and in doing so, undoubtedly saved many lives.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to @aygart for his clarity, as always, and to @Lurker and @S209 for constantly keeping us in the know on the latest information on Covid19, and on ensuring we do not get blinded by emotional, political and other considerations.

That's like saying lakewood is Jewish. Yes there are parts of Sullivan that are Jewish. But places that these cases are not the Jewish area
That's doesn't help. They can still say the Jews brought it up there. And they may or may not be right.

No one was challenging the rules. It was more about logistics, as not every minyan ran so smoothly with the transferring Sifrei Torah, etc.
That's great! Things can always be figured out if there is a will.

Is this a real headline? If so, it's beyond shameful. War on Americans? Calling in National Guard to protect store owners from violent mobs and restore law and order is "War on Americans"? Is this an alternative reality that we live in?

Re: Bill D’Blasio Warns "The Jewish Community"
This might be crazier than his jewish community tweet. And Gov Smith had the same sentiments.
They’re straight up saying these are the order of priorities:
1. protesting peacefully in a crowd
2. covid safety
3. earning a living/religious rights in a crowd

Protesting and being religious are both 1A. Both (or neither) should trump covid b/c of importance.

That guy is seriously a piece of garbage.

Same goes for every public official making these heartwarming statements.

Someone should tell this guy to keep his mouth shut and not make fun of former presidents. If he claims to represent us, he should grow up and act like a mentsh. I don't see anyone from the Agudah behaving that way.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
as in facts you don’t like?!
::)
Yes, there's ~9-10 DDFers who've been gleefully pointing out how shuls etc are fully back to business with no masks. As if somehow opening a shul with masks is a bad thing.
Exactly. People act as if it's over and, worse, never existed in the first place. It's not the most comfortable thing to wear a mask in shul, but it's just common sense to do so for the time being.

Re: would you fly now?
https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/is-it-safe-to-fly-again

“If you’re going back out to restaurants again and that sort of thing there's no particular reason why flying is more dangerous to you,” Seth Kaplan, an airline expert and transportation analysis told FOX Business.

“The air on airplanes is actually rather clean and it's designed to prevent the spread of disease. The reason you get sick on an airplane is because you’re sitting right next to someone who's sick or because you touched a surface that someone who’s sick did. It’s the people around you. Whether you’re on an airplane or somewhere else," Kaplan explained.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines say that people may be less likely to contract a virus on a flight because of how the air is circulated and filtered on airplanes, but they may be more likely to get sick from being in close contact with others on airport security lines or from coming in contact with frequently touched surfaces.

What a load of stupidity. "Airplanes are totally safe, it's just there's this thing called people who are sitting right next to you that's the problem. But airplanes themselves? Totally safe."

Re: Lakewood protest
Police chief Meyer responded to the criticism:
I agree with him. It is their job to ensure that protests remain peaceful. So it makes sense that he would join with them. The only question remains why they couldn't at least attempt to keep the protesters 6ft away from each other? Though, they were probably afraid of it escalating if they did that.

Re: Lakewood protest
Indeed, I think it's a good answer. But it doesn't explain why Mayor Coles was there, and even more troubling, OC Prosecutor Billhimer. He is in charge of upholding the law, but he is not a field law enforcement official.
There's reasoning for that, too. They also can help with keeping things calm since it shows that they are being listened to.

Re: Lakewood protest
hmmmm, okaaaay. Perhaps. So if they come to close my shul, we should just get out of control and they'll come daven with us?
I'm not excusing the picking and choosing. I'm just explaining their reasoning. And, yes, life is not fair. The kids who act out aways get more attention in school.

Re: would you fly now?
Love the hypocrisy. Airplanes are just like restaurants. The reason you get sick on airplanes is from surfaces or sitting close to someone sick. So in summary, go on airplanes if you go anywhere else, same risk.
I think 2020 will down in history as the year of unmasking, not the year of masks...
