Re: Getting A Green Card\US citizenship
it's not clear from the letter, but i think it doesn't matter, hopefully we will receive the 10y before the end of the 1y

Why wouldn't you apply for citizenship before then?

Re: Grammar and Spelling Lessons 101

They also use what we would call grammatical errors, BUT they have a really cool rhyme based slang.

Such as "trouble and strife" for "wife".

@srap Are you an English teachah or sumfin'?

So if a bullet happens to wiz by your head, that's not a makom sakana? Come on.

So if a bullet happens to wiz by your head, that's not a makom sakana? Come on.

Yes. If you're walking down a corridor in Fort Knox, for example, no one in their right mind would argue that you are in a makom sakana. And if, while walking, a big heavy gold ingot fell off a pallet and missed you by inches, that still doesn't make it a makom sakana.

A battlefield, on the other other hand, is where danger abounds. Same with a desert, or prison (see the Prison thread for more details....  ;))

I think you're mixing up makom sakana and matzav sakana. A LOR might still instruct you to make a hagomel on a matzav sakana, but I'm talking about the strict definiton of a "makom sakana".

Re: Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving? It also depends where. In Lakewood or Monsey, for example, where everything is more spread out, some communities consider it more acceptable for women to drive.

Re: Women in Jewish magazines
Let's weigh the cost for each side.
Publication stands up for "women's rights"=loses subscribers, advertisers, risks being banned.
Publication stands up for "higher levels of tznius" = loses maybe a few subscribers (who probably were to "sophisticated" to read anything that the magazine was publishing anyway)
Quotes around words to imply the exaggerating

That is the whole case, in a nutshell. So why should the magazines lose money? As @Something Fishy once said,

At the end of the day though, "the Prophet exists to sell itself, you silly girl".

for all those that remember even rivka imeinu drove her own camel! ( not to mention that she fell off when she saw her husband0

Reminds me of a vertel, why did Rivka fall off the camel when she saw Yitzchak?

Because up until then, tefillas mincha didn't exist yet. She saw Yitzchak going out in the afternoon and start davening, and thought he was davening a very late shacharis. She was so shocked that she fell off her camel!
