Regular version is free to download.
But remember to uncheck the "Optional offers" on the download page (or install Unchecky to autometticly uncheck all these kinds of checkmarks from unneeded software.)

Re: Computer Troubleshooting/Help Master Thread
As Yisroel said - you don't need to know your key.  Once your machine is activated once, Microsoft will always activate an install of Windows 10 on that machine.
Except in the case of a big hardware change (motherboard or CPU etc.) it might make problems unless - as said - the license is linked to the Microsoft account.

I have Win Ultimate.

For the issue i'm having now removing the driver would not work since i have a duplicate copy of the same printer trying to remove the copy
There is no way to "completely" remove something while staying with it...that is what want to do. I'd suggest you remove both of them normally, then force remove through Print Management (while printer is unplugged.) And afterward just install the printer freshly.

Re: Computer Troubleshooting/Help Master Thread
What's the difference between the pro and the non pro?
First the price... But the Pro is not a nice amount faster (though it's hard to say you'll really feel it), uses a newer and better manufacturing process which can result in more reliability, uses somewhat less power, has a longer endurance (which means that it can live through more read and writes), and has 10 year warranty instead of 5 for the Evo.

That all said, the Evo is still one of the best value SSD drives, bring great and still not that expensive.

Just not to leave it without mention... There's also the M.2 (which uses a different interface straight to the motherboard unlike the old SATA drives) line from Samsung, the 960 Evo and 960 Pro, which are even more expensive, but a lot a lot higher speeds.

BOT -Does that mean the Evo with the samsung micro sd cards are good as well vs SanDisk?
What is the 'that' which should say so? Haven't compared here to SanDisk and surely not about SD cards.

For SSD the Samsung are considered better. As for SD cards I don't think on it them is necessarily better, all class 10 cards from the known brands shall be equally good. (of course you can compare speed for each specific model in their product description.)

If ones getting a laptop for basic usage, (storing lots of files, and simple tasks) any reason to go with the I7 core? Or i5 is more then enough?
You are not detailing what you mean "simple use", but probably an i5 should do the job.

Scanning documents in and out of the computer, copying files(Lots of music and high regulation pics 25-35mb pics) and burning discs from and to computer, simple uses of excel, microsoft....I need something specifically for speed and reliability?
The $379 (really good price for what it is, better than BF) should be adequate (except if you're doing all of the above at one...)

Re: Computer Troubleshooting/Help Master Thread
I have these really nooby questions, please don't mind me.
I just got this laptopand have some questions before I start it up.
As you can see in the link, this comes with a 1TB HDD, which I'd like to upgrade to an SSD.

A) This laptop comes with Windows 10 Signature Edition; where is that stored? Is it stored in the HDD? If I replace it with an SSD, will I need to somehow reinstall windows?

B) 256 GB sounds like not enough storage space for a laptop (yes, I know about the cloud). Does THIS Crucial 525GB SATA work nicely? Or is it worth paying an extra $40+ for the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB?

C) Again, please excuse my terrible ignorance, but are these the same exact physical size as the HDD it's replacing? Is the "slot" the same size in all windows 13"-17" laptops?

D) Is upgrading/adding RAM from 8GB to 16GB something that makes sense for someone who habitually keeps dozens of tabs and multiple windows open at once?
Does installation involve anything complicated or is it rather simple? And (this one is so embarrassing :-[ ) how do I go about buying one (there doesn't seem to be a huge selection)? And is there any specific one that's highly recommended?

Would really appreciate if someone has the patients to respond to my ignorance.
TIA!!
My friend, there's no need whatsoever to point out every 2nd line that your ignorant or noobie...you may ask advice even if you aren't (hint: you aren't...)  ;)

I'll try to answer as for what I know and I hope with other guys' input something will come out for you...

A) Windows is stored on the (1 TB) HDD. If you'll replace it you'll have two options, first - and best - is cloning (in plain English, copying the whole thing) the old HDD to the new one (for which you'll need an accessory like this to have them both connected at once.) 2nd option would be reinstalling Windows. (which isn't that hard either, but you should first sign into the laptop with your MS account so that the license will work automatically even after changing drive.)

B) IMHO 256GB is more than enough "working" space if you don't plan on having a huge collection of Music or Videos saved on there. And if you're going with 250GB the Samsung and the Crucial are almost same price so the Samsung would be the way to go. If you do wanna go with the 500GB it is hard to make the decision, it is not just like five bucks more, but the Samsung is after all the king, and as a bonus the Samsung comes with 2 more years warranty and a great easy to use cloning software (if you go with option 1 for the previous answer.)

C) Yes, all normal laptops use the same 2.5" SATA slot which fits all 2.5" SATA drives.

D) It is more complicated. Not necessarily the mere installation which is a bit more delicate, but the choosing should be complete exact (some tiny, almost unnotable, specs may make all the difference between success and failure) match and some problems that may arise. So I would not recommend it for a first or 2nd-time laptop tinkering.

BTW, as I noted in that deals thread lately laptops come more closed down and in order to change a thing you need to crack them all the way open (unlike in the past that most came with easily unscrewable covers to open and make these upgrades.) How is this specific model in this regards?

Re: Internet Filters
Which of the livigent based filter providers (such as Meshimer, gentech, venishmartem,  native, etc)  would be the cheapest for office with 4 pc's?
You can call them for exact pricing but from the pricing available on their respective sites, it seems that Nativ is certainly the cheapest (by a lot). They charge $140/y for one license which "Protects up to 2 computers" http://www.usanativ.com/plans.html. But -as said- they aren't Livigent based and I think that they are even more restrictive.

(BTW, in correction to my previous message, Venishmartems seems to be replaced by GenTech, that is where their old website is redirecting http://vcfprotection.com/vcf. And BTW there's another separate filter that isn't Livigent called NetSafe https://www.netsafepro.com)

Here are the prices per year for 4 PCs as it seems to me from their sites.
Meshimer    $539.52
NativUSA    $280.00
GenTech    $499.96
Geder    $623.52
NetSafe    $456.00

Anyway to export lp to keepass?
"To switch from LastPass (LP) to KeePass (KP), I used LP's More Options > Advanced > Export > LastPass CSV File to create a CSV file. Using KeePass' Import LastPass CSV mostly worked. However any "&" characters in passwords now were "&" (bug opened) .. which a quick (re)export in the "KeePass XML (2.x)" file format, with a Search & Replace of "&" by "&" and (XML) re-import fixed."

Re: Computer Troubleshooting/Help Master Thread
My current laptop (Toshiba C55-B5362 15.6" Notebook) has these specs:

*Intel Core i3-4005U 3M Cache, 1.70GHz processor
*4 GB RAM
*500 GB hard drive

It takes like 7 seconds for a Microsoft Word doc to open.

What specs should I get on a new laptop that it would open much faster?

Thanks
While it is very hard to say exactly what is causing it, I'd go up with all the specs if possible in your budget:
*i5 Processor
*8 GB RAM
*256 SSD

Also, take in mind that Word loading slowly isn't always the system specs at fault. It might be add-ons to Word that cause it. You can try checking this by running Word in Safe Mode (not the PC in safe mode, but the Word program) and see if in that way it does start fast. To start Word in Safe Mode search in Start for winword /safe and run the first result.

Any solutions?
Log in with fingerprints and open an administrator command prompt (which can be done with the fingerprints if you need to enter a password for that) and run the following command:
Code: [Select]
net user churnbabychurn 1234567Where "churnbabychurn" is your username and "1234567" is the new password for the account. (well, don't use this one...)

Anyone using netspark with Android 7.0 (nougat)?
I have the play store enabled via custom filter but all of a sudden a few days ago I can no longer download and update apps. I get a 491 error.
When I disable netspark it works fine so the issue is definitely with netspark
Saw the same issue with a friend that updated his S7 to Nought. TAG told him that NetSpark has problems with this update.

Re: Best free Anti-Virus master thread
I had Kaspersky and recently my computer started crashing and giving a NETIO.SYS error. I uninstalled Kaspersky and it seems like (hopefully) the problem stopped. It also seems like my computer is a lot faster now. Does this make sense? Did anyone experience anything similar? Is that something to expect from any anti-virus?
It is certainly (without any doubt whatsoever) Livigent's problem. I had three people with Avast and one with Bitdefender, all on Livigent, with the same exact crash. There is no need really to uninstall the whole antivirus, for me disabling (hopefully only temporarily, until they fix it) the web (for Avast)/firewall (for BD) was enough to stop the crashes.

It seems to be a new problem that they have. You should contact you filter provider (through whom do you have the Livigent? I had it with Meshimer users only) and let them know. Tell them to try making exclusions in the web/firewall protection for their IP and program file. (if they just turn it off try protesting and ask them to fix it, or at least try with exclusions, instead of just leaving you less protected because it is easier...)

Please (not just you, as a general suggestion and read this threads wiki...) be descriptive when you write a problem, so people could even attempt helping you. No one could know what "does some weird stuff" means, describe what those weird stuff are.

That's a BSOD, check the event viewer for errors
It wasn't a BSOD (given that it was set to produce dump files and there weren't any.) He meant to the blue screen with repair options that show up after some crashes.

Somehow it seemed to have happened by a Windows Update for the Intel Display Driver. Each time that tried to install it just went off. So I used the Microsoft Troubleshoot tool to hide that update. Seems all good so far.

what do you mean by pc? He only has a laptop down there, would that suffice?

Laptop same thing. Meaning to say not if he needs several devices or if he needs wifi for his phone.

If he has Optimum signal at his windows, with this long range antenna he'd most likely have it in middle of the basement too.

Re: Wifi Extender for Optimum Wifi?
That's exactly what he needs, but how would I know to set this up? What would I have to do to take the signal and stretch it? How would I log into the wifi to cause the antennas to extend it further? Thanks yisroel.
There's no real setup to do (except at some PCs installing the drivers that come on a disk). This isn't an extender for the WiFi but a new WiFi card for his laptop which is long range and can pick up signals farther away.

You just plug it in to the USB port on the computer and it shows up as WiFi 2 under which you'll find all the networks it finds just like the normal WiFi connection of the PC.

Re: Global Ransomware Attack
A question for someone who understands how this stuff works.

For a system that was vulnerable, infected, but powered down when the attack hit, would disconnecting from the internet prior to powering up enable the cleaning of the system before worm could get instructions to encrypt?  If so, why is that not being widely disseminated?
The real answer to your question is no. Everything can happen, but once you are infected with a ransomware the program does not need the internet to continue its operation of encrypting files (at least in all ransomware that I saw analysis od, which is a lot.)

In a theoretical situation, which would probably never happen, that you somehow figure out that you are infected but the (or some of the) files are still not encrypted, the best thing would be to load the hard drive from a different system (a non-Windows boot CD preferred) and grab all files, and then attempt to clean everything (cleaning an actual virus is...never a definite thing, it might be cleaned or the virus might be more persistent, unless a real pro - and a pro in virus removal because a lot of computer pros do not have a clue in this stuff - does it.

Quote
Attack was facilitated by a worm.  Apparently malicious code was implanted in systems by clicking on email links and lay dormant (or spread themselves further but did not encrypt) until activated Friday.  It's possible the trigger was a date/time but I think it's much more likely they triggered it and a time of their choice.
You somewhat misunderstood this specific infection (WannaCry) and its way of infecting.

The initial infection for some computers was through email link etc. (it is not entirely clear at this point.) And on the systems that were infected that way the virus was a regular virus, nothing with a worm or time-activation. Just after (or at least when it was well in the midst) of taking the local computer's files ransom, the worm kicked in and scanned first the LAN for any PC with this vulnerability not patched, and infected it, then it started scanning random IPs over the internet for this vulnerability.

But the point, relevant to your question, is, that once a PC was infected one way or the other it started encrypting right away.

May 15, 2017, 11:28:30 PM
1
Re: Global Ransomware Attack
Ransom messages apparently only popped up Friday.  You mean to suggest that peoples data was encripted long before and they just didn't realize it, or that with in the space of a few hours hundreds of thousands of systems were initially infected, encrypted, and ransomed?
The latter. And I'm not merely suggesting...that was how it worked. On mid Thursday the virus was first released in the wild and on Friday it already had 200k+ PCs infected!

That, my friend, is the power of human laziness and ignorance... Or as someone puts it: Microsoft may have patches Windows but has not released a patch for human stupidity...

The specs are pretty good (though the CPU is more i3'ish), but refurbished is always good to buy from very reputable sellers, and this seller is pretty new.

Thanks for the advice about refurbished.

i3ish.. why is that? I was assuming A12 is pretty new.
It is AMD and not Intel. The A12 is - I'd say - performance wise between an i5 and an i3 (more to the i3.)

I haven't tried it, but I've had TestDisk find files that Recuva didn't.
TestDisk is the best, the most thorough, in most cases that I tried.

beside the point that with TestDisk you can browse the folders with no scan before, and just see in red the Deleted. (there are more advanced and deep scans, but there's a simple way too.)

Re: Laptop Deals Master Thread

Is the ram expandable?
Is the lower screen resolution noticeable for everyday office work?
Memory is expandable to 16 GB (2x8GB.)

It certainly is noticeable because of the missing screen real estate (everything is bigger). But that doesn't mean it is bad. It is about the same as FHD on a typical desktop 22" monitor.

Re: Internet Filters
Posting for a friend:

Lives in Israel.  I assume boils down to VCF/Gentech/Livigent, Netspark.  Don't know anything about android filters though. Any advice or recommendations?
You are right that AFAIK there aren't any real cheap but good solutions. Since he's looking for the cheaper side I guess Netspark is the better option, since all the others (which are all Livengent based) are double the price.
