Re: Arizona Master Thread Lake Powell & Zion Trip Report - Quick 4 day trip

Flew NYC straight to Lake Powell which is in Page,AZ

Returned from St George, UT, SGU-DEN-EWR on United miles

Ewr to Phx using United Miles
UR points to book Great Lakes Airlines PHX to PGA.
(Yes slight risk flying connecting on two separate itineraries, but Great Lakes has multiple flights per day)
(Flying AA would've required a terminal change)

Got into Phoenix about 8am and went to United Club which happened to be directly opposite Great Lakes gate.

Great Lakes is a tiny little plane 1-1 configuration, no cockpit, restroom etc

Got into page about 12 noon. It isn't simple to get a one way rental out of Page. There is only an Avis in Page which is a franchise. However Paul is very helpful in getting you into Corporate vehicles which need to get back to to the bigger airports regardless. (I'm not sure what would happen if you take a franchise vehicle and drop it off in PHX)
Avis is closed on Sunday but he left us the keys with the Airline. (Actually rented 2 days locally, and then 1 day on a one-way to $ave a couple bucks.)

Stayed at the Courtyard in Page which was very fair. Checked in early so took a room without great view rather then wait. There's a Walmart there and all.

Went to Horseshoe Bend. Gorgeous! Short easy but very sunny hike up to the viewpoint. Later in the afternoon walked down to The Chains. Thanks to ddfer who TR about this. It's basically a place to climb down into the Lake.

Monday: Took out a boat on Lake Powell. There are many other marinas to rent from other then the ones on the water. Google them. We booked late so we ended up with a pontoon from Carls Marina. Costs about 380 plus fuel but included delivery and haul out from the lake. Definitely easier to Beach a pontoon. Spent a full day riding around, parked on the beach, and we also hooked up a tube as well.

TUES: Antelope Canyons in the morning. We didn't do the actual Antelope Canyons. We did the Canyon X, but supposedly its the same. It's a must do, yes those pix are real! Though the camera settings definitely help. Going in the morning is the way to go, avoids crowds and the sweltering heat.

Checked out and drove 1.5 hrs to Zion National Park. Thanks to another Ddf TR we biked it. There are other bike rental places in Springdale, but it's a lot easier to rent from the location at the entrance to the park as it's not significantly more expensive. We started biking down about 1.5 hrs b4 sundown. Weather was amazing and the sights even more amazing the road is so quiet and serene. Definitely an unbelievable way to experience one of the best national parks.

Stayed at the Springhill Suites in Springdale. Pretty much brand new. The place could almost qualify as a Ritz. Got Gold upgraded to a Suite.

WED went back into zion for a quick hike. Headed out about noon to SGU Airport in St George, UT. Connected through DEN. Called in an order to East Side Kosher Deli in Denver and sent an Uber to fetch it, tx amex credits!

Short but unbelievable!

Re: Car Insurance Master Thread TIP: I priced out a policy with GEICO. At checkout they raised it on me from  about 700 to 900. So I exited the browser and restarted the policy with my wife as the policyholder and myself as the additional. Came out to about 600!

Was paying close to double the with Liberty Mutual.

Re: (DROPR ALERT: BAD INFO) Chase Sapphire Reserve does NOT COVER CDW IN ISRAEL! Many rental agencies there like to see a letter attesting to this. Call the Chase Benefits Dept, they can email a letter over in a matter of minutes. I'd print it out and bring a hard copy to the rental counter.

ETA: I see all you need is a flat head screw driver and pry it right off, really simple.
Check out this video where he demastrates how to do it.

And a link for the product on Amazon.

Or walk into Auto zone and give them the year, make and model and they'll tell you exactly where to find a new pair.
Here's some of them listed on their website.

Also seems to depend if you have a powered lift gate or a non powered lift gate.

Tysm MYI. Took about 10 minutes start to finish. Plug n play more or less. Ordered from RockAuto.

Re: Lakewood NJ Master Thread
The yeshivas poskim dont hold of it
The Yeshiva is GENERALLY against Eiruvin although they are more outspoken regarding the larger ones. This is more of a policy at this point. If you really want a psak ask one of the Rabbonim local to that area, in this instance Raintree Brookhill etc. The Rabbonim aren't going to make a public defiance against Yeshivas position, but if you ask them off the air the halacha you might get what you want.

I'd rather not elaborate more here so as not to cause heartache to those who for example aren't aware that many Lakewooders don't observe Yom Ha'atzmot.

Re: Halachik Status of Illegitimate Minyanim Needless to say I think its obvious that you want find any noted persona making a public statement allowing Minyanim. Events surrounding recent controversies have made people smarter about how their opinions and pesakim can end up in the wrong places where they are misunderstood or used to promote hatred and the like.

As stated earlier your LOR is (as always) a great resource for guidance.

Ask your LOR. I don't believe everyone agrees with this.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
I don't know but I've heard prominent Baal tzedaka in Miami Beach passed away Friday from covid19 he was 65.
I heard something like he was on a  vent for 5 weeks I dunno.

Just because you don't see these things doesn't mean that it doesn't exist
BDE. So he caught the virus 6-7 weeks ago. Where does that put us TODAY almost 2 months later? All this data and these "new" positives aren't all that relevant if the person had symptoms 5 weeks ago and isn't contagious today. How long is someone contagious for?

RT 70 in Lakewood is good as well. Was there too many times.
Retracting my positive review of Mavis on rt. 70. Was there recently for oil change and brakes and they came up with a whole laundry list of $2k worth of stuff that was "crucial or my front tires would literally fall of on the highway, he has seen that happen...". When I declined he tried to negotiate and offer a deal etc. (I brought the car to Lipas shortly after and they weren't concerned by any of Mavis concerns.) Was during Covid, place was empty and they may have been desperate for $$$. Ill update the post if my tires fall off.

Re: Lakewood cases
Weddings cause a spread because theere are people coming in from out of towns communities and are giving it to people. Enough people had it that it won't really spread to far. But ya people should not invite guests coming from out of town communities that didn't really get hit like Baltimore. They all have it and just don't realize.
Shuls, camps , restaurants etc have been happening for months already with zero SD. Suddenly weddings are an issue. Only logical explanation is that Lakewood seems to have some level of herd immunity and/or even some negative antibodiers have some other immunity. Its the out of towners thrown in the mix who are both getting and spreading. One of the Lakewood spreader weddings was a Baltimore family.

But who knows.

Re: Lakewood NJ Master Thread
To give a comparison, you might compare it to going to visit a Rosh Yeshiva. Obviously someone who doesn’t own a hat wont go out and buy one. But you wanna put your best foot forward.

(Ok here goes, I think im about to get my hat smashed like a chossen by an aufruf. “Who does the rosh mosed think he is?!” “Why cant they accept me the way I am?!” Just play along, play along)

Re: Any mortgage experts on the forums?
Lock in a mortgage rate now or I shouldn't be worried after elections it will go up?
There are some experienced brokers who believe in locking prior. Obviously depends on the cost of locking.

Re: Do you think Biden Stole The 2020 Elections?
If the D's stole all these state elections why didn't they do it in FL?
Republican controlled.

Nobody on a state level will investigate in a democrat controlled state which allows someone to play around without fear of prosecution.

Re: Lakewood covid cases
We should be restricting them forever according to many letters put out by many rabbonim and roshei yeshiva over the years.
+1 Now is an opportunity to curb these things down once and for all.

Small reception.
Full meal for limited guests.
Dancing with buffet available for all. Come for as short or as long as you’d like.

The end.

Re: Lakewood covid cases

For COVID, add outdoor parts when possible and separate area/restrictions for those who are high risk or being careful/no antibodies. And as with everything else not just simchos but especially so

Im with you on this. BUT BEWARE I know of a few family members at a wedding who were exceedingly careful (remained outside with two masks on!) and caught it anyways. Precautions are great but minimizing the time spent out and about needs to be recognized as a huge step. I.e. 10 minutes with no mask (but staying cognizant of not getting too close) is probably safer then 3 hours outdoors masked up.

Slack for Daf Yomi (deal on Artscroll Pesachim for next few hrs) Curious what peoples thoughts or reviews are on this new Slack workspace being used for Daf Yomi. Ira Zlotowitz launched a Slack for people to ask questions on the daf. The Rabbi there does a great job IMHO. There are also channels with Shiurim posted there daily from various places such as Sruly Bornstein as well as some other stuff. He has a video there to explain but gotta join to really understand it.

Seems like he has a connection to Artscroll :) and worked out 25% for members (for today only??) on the new gemaras for next cycle. Wonder if this will continue through the cycle.

Its a clever use of Slack. The benefits over whatsapp is that groups can be any size and questions go into threads. There are Sruly Bornstein whatsapps but those have both limitations. The idea have having many channels in one place makes accessing a variety of content seamless. Its nice on the go. I felt Slack to be a bit confusing for the first couple minutes til you get acclimated especially on a PC. Definitely cheaper then building a platform from scratch.

Make sure the deal is *before* the state rebate.
Sometimes they include the rebate in the price.
Needs to be NJ dealer. Careful.

But there do seem to be a few extra scammers in the car industry..
And Buying instead of Leasing ain’t exactly the solution.

The Future of Lakewood IMHO the issue is the Concert nature of the event. Not to say there have never been similar type events but this one became the bulls eye. The supposed meshichist issue is the “mail fraud” charge against this matter.

Bottom line, Lakewood ain’t Lakewood but it comes a point when the ‘ol Lakewoodwooders get out there and scream “SHABBOS”

TLS has alot of chutzpa for saying publicly that the RY missed the boat. Using that claim you can reverse any rabbinic guidance. If he was sure let him go to the RY to discuss. Bottom line hes now a trained Lkwd Vaad member, use the RY when needed and discard when not needed.

Re: Would this change the shidduch picture conversation?
As I was reading these posts I thought about a sha'alah that Rabbi Frand asked during his shiur this past Thursday Night.

There was a bochur who was quite particular and turned down many shidduch opportunities. One of the Rebbeim in his yeshiva was bothered that the bochur was getting older and was single. The Rebbi said to him - I have a girl for you with "all the ma'alos" with one issue - she limps. He was not interested.

A few days later the Rebbi came back to him and said that he had a shidduch for him a girl with "all the ma'alos" but she is divorced.

The bochur was upset - these are the girls that are being read to me?

Not long after, the bochur became engaged to a girl who had "all the ma'alos" who he had turned down for a shidduch numerous times before.

When they asked him why he had said yes this time, he said that before he thought he was Hashem's gift to humanity, but seeing the girls that had been read to him more recently, he realized that he was getting older and that maybe he was not as hot a commodity as he thought.

The Rebbi then asked R' Yitzchok Zilberstein whether he was oveir on Ona'as Devorim by suggesting these girls (they were actually fictional)  for the bochur and causing him agmas nefesh by knocking him down a few pegs.

R' Frand said that R' Yitzchok Zilberstein said that this was not Ona'as Devorim, because this was l'toeles.

But the upshot is rather clear (and this is me talking). Sometimes a person will turn down a shidduch not because of the other person, but because of their unhealthy or unrealistic views of themselves.
There are campaigns encouraging people to redt Shidduchim. Aside from the obvious benefit of the person actually being the right one, I believe that when fellow peers give suggestions this helps frame peoples expectations and makes them more realistic about what to go for. It’s a good healthy dose of reality.

While most parents overshoot as they think their child is gods gift to humanity, there are instances where the opposite is true and people hear that enough people think their son is suitable for grade AAA girls. This is much more effective when it’s just regular people making the suggestion and not shadchanim.

Would this change the shidduch picture conversation?
+1 at least on the one married daughter.
Good for u both! Its amazing when one can actually see the suitability and appreciate it bh! I stand corrected but that wasn’t the point. While many to  most parents overshoot at least initially (in matters important to them), however when a boy veers slightly from the path and norms of the parents and was mostly away from home for a decade, at times parents aren’t properly gauging their kid. Getting names basically tells them what their kid is about and what is suitable.

Yes suitability is not just important, its not gonna happen if its not accurate. But not all men are created equal and AOC has yet to promise everyone a 10.

Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky has a great series on dating/Shidduchim, applicable to anyone who has the slightest involvement, including taking Shidduch questions, aka everyone. Available on TorahAnytime.
