California Coast PCH Master Thread this time it's a real question, I've never really done this before :)

I'm thinking of driving up the coast from LA to SF.

what are the "must sees"?

All I know is that the Big Sur area is supposed to be beautiful and I have no interest in going to hearst castle.

Re: jokes, any type goes.Whats the difference between mashed potatoes, and pea soup? This was already posted in a different thread, but i think it belongs here a lot more so I'll take the liberty of re-posting it.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our President.

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a post turtle.'

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was.

The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.'

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb asses put him up there to begin with.

The funny/strange/interesting/random pictures thread Instead of sticking them in the jokes thread I think this deserves a thread of it's own.

I'll start:

Ever wondered why Fedex overnight is so expensive? here's why:

For those not familiar with the area:

Re: Arizona Master Thread
I was planning to do the reverse doing 89a from Sedona to Flagstaff near sunset time. I would assume that will be a similar experience to the reverse.
This is just a guess, but I think the timing of it works out better Flagstaff > Sedona.
If my memory serves me correctly, you'll have brighter light in the greener more mountainous area closer to Flagstaff then when you get closer to Sedona you'll have all the red rocks practically glowing with the sunset light.

when I did it I left left the flagstaff area somewhat earlier in the day and did (a chunk of) the west fork trail before continuing on to Sedona. It's a great trail, I highly recommend it. When I did it my kids were 7, 6, and just barely 3, they had a great time. It's much more pleasant than hiking the GC. I did my GC hike in the middle of January and even then it was getting quite uncomfortable once the sun starting baking down on us. The West Fork trail was mostly in the shade.

Re: Messianism among Lubavitch
Easier to waive flags than learn or ask people to put on tefilin...
It's also easier to flat out, blanketly, denounce a whole group of people whose ideology you disagree with than to recognize what they are doing right. :)

It just happens to be, that generally speaking, the "flaggers" are amongst the most dedicated to learning and mivtzoim and "the Rebbe's inyonim" in general. Of course there are exceptions, but if you look at the average "flagger" bochur you'll find that to be the case.

I have plenty of problems with them and what they do, but I can also recognize what they do right.

if I go to the kona for 7 hrs and maui for 5 hrs.
You know generally when people here say they went to OGG or LIH they don't actually mean they only went to the airport, they're using the airport code to refer to the whole island :)

Re: Site Suggestions maybe change "(2 people liked this)" to just "(2 likes)"

ETA: or maybe even better just the number itself, just have "(2)"

ETA #2: when displaying the like button it should just have the number, when the button is not being displayed it should also have the word likes.

Re: Crown Heights master thread
Apparently this one is under the OK.
With or without a hechsher, Branover said in the past that his goal is to bring together people who eat kosher and those who don't. "They don’t mingle too much and why, really, not?" he asked. "What better way than to break bread?"

Oh, the irony of having davka pas yisroel for a place with such a goal.

Re: The New DDMS!
Aside from looking horrible, it should say DansDealsForums, not DansDeals.

If it does say that, the Forums part should be lighter/smaller/something to indicate it's a section of Dansdeals rather than being a standalone entity.

The yellow flag contingent does make good Felafel in Tokyo and have lots of eateries in Mexico, but other than that, not much.
Chabad in Tzfas and its environs is...interesting.
So that's what Chabad's contribution to world Jewry is all about? Restaurants?

Re: Interesting Articles...
Long, but interesting
Very interesting.

One little tidibit I found very interesting
Contrary to common belief, Lloyd’s isn’t an insurer, or even a company in the usual sense of the word. Since its origins in a 17th century coffeehouse popular with traders who funded sea voyages, Lloyd’s has evolved into something like a stock exchange for risk, where actual insurers come to buy and sell exposure. These companies form syndicates and get insurance of their own from even larger re-insurers, who are re-re-insured in turn. These layers constitute one of the world’s most essential and least understood markets, where premiums alone generate about $40 billion a year.

Meh, Charlottsville was more like the twice a day that a dead clock is right than it was one good side side and one evil side.

You have antifa running around for months attacking anyone they disagree with and calling them nazis and white supremacists, and this one time they happened to be right, this one time was a legit neo-nazi/white supremacist rally.

Re: Which States Have You Been To?
I thought I would manage to round off all 50 this summer. Alas, it looks like it's not meant to be. Iy"h next year. For now I'm stuck at 47:

3 Remaining:

This is a disaster, I haven't added a new state in over 2 years  :'(

Meanwhile I figured I'd add a picture of my states...

I kinda followed their color guidelines but with a twist of my own

  • Red is for states where I was basically just yotzei being there, e.g. airport stopover, driving through a small part of the state without really stopping.
  • Amber is for states I've spent a little more time but still didn't do very much, e.g. spent a night, drove through the entire state etc. (some of them e.g. the ones between NY-FL I drove through dozens of times...)
  • Blue is for states I've spent a more time in e.g. I had significant trips there or done quite a bit of touring.
  • Green is for states I've lived in or visited many many times.
I didn't really think this through thoroughly, I'm sure there are states I can upgrade the status of if I bothered to think it over...
