Re: Panama Master Thread I had pretty bad experience just trying to book her .
Mrs. Karniel of Chabad suggested Alon and we couldn't have been happier.
I just had a horrible experience with Sorhay (the real Panama tour). She quoted me a price for two different tours and then when I was ready to pay she raised the price hundreds of dollars claiming she never gave me that price even though I sent her the messages proving it. She was extremely rude and even when she had to admit she gave me those prices she said it was a mistake and she will not honor it. I am glad I got to see her true colors before going on full day tours with her. She really came off to me as a horrible person.

Correct, however, his question was why is it worth more then other recent offerings from the US Mint, from other series, that have lower or similair mintages (the eishenhower RP from 2015 with 17k mintage is one example) and have not appreciated anywhere near this offering.

Because I don't believe the CDC to be corrupt and I do believe Mexican authorities to be corrupt based on my short experience in Mexico. If there was Zika in MIA we'd know about it.

If you tell the staff that it's "shabbat" they'll push the buttons in the elevator, and pick you up at the time you request.
They do have a set of doors that are not electronic.

The lobby is on the 15th floor, so you'll need to have the valet bring you up to the 15th floor and then have concierge help you with the next set of elevators, as you need to switch on the lobby floor.
Pretty much sums it up.

Re: Bloomberg vs Trump 2020
To this point - when they changed the rules allowing Bloomberg to participate, there was initial backlash about the billionaire buying his way in. But there was also some talk that Warren and others pushed to have him included, so they could face off and engage with him directly. Last night was the reason why.
Warren gains nothing from going after Bloomberg, she should focus on Sanders.
In 3 weeks she will be as relevant as Beto and Kamala Harris.

Re: Bloomberg vs Trump 2020
His poor performance was truly stunning. He got a few jabs in (the communism jab, the three-houses jab, etc.), but he got absolutely mauled by Warren--which, by the way, was to be expected. What wasn't to be expected was how flat-footed he was going to be in response.  Either he is the worse debater in this election cycle, or his advisors did a piss-poor job of prepping him.  Either way, DJT is going to make mince-meat out of the Bloomberg we saw on stage last night.
If he actually stood his ground. and defended his policies and past , instead of kowtowing to the political left, he would've been in decent shape , as he could fill the vacuum of the moderate lane.

Re: POLL: Wedding expenses in the frum Community - BH for simchos? or out of hand?
A new initiative has gotten off the ground. Its hard to know if it will last, but its nice to see so many people have signed up!

https://simchainitiative.org/
I don't think you can reasonably insist on much less.

I have put some thought into this:

My thoughts are that perhaps it should be about limiting numbers of courses, band sizes, shmorgs and bars, rather than capping invitees.

The reality is that it is not easy for a prominent individual to limit guests. There may be many employees and acquaintances, aside from neighbors, relatives and associates. And who wants to snub neighbors by only inviting some of the block?

Of course if Rabbonim attend such events it makes it even harder.

Suppose it was about limiting the grandiosity. Rules can include things like a max number of courses, a limit on the shmorg size, no more than a 5-piece band, max 1 singer, and no bars. All this, but no cap on invitees.

It would be more doable and help with affordability and social pressure. And less excusable. A guy says now, look I have a lot of people I must invite. Fair point, but it doesn’t require a bar and a 10-piece band.

It would be nice if the people behind this initiative would consider this.

Im sure the initiative is well intended, but it doesn't actually address the problem.

I think that we are going about the wrong away, trying to make Takonos doesn't work outside of a few tight-knit sects of the Chasidic community. ( and the few i've seen are absurd)

For the most part those that can't afford it and are making lavish weddings , are the same people that drive an expensive lease while in debt or living paycheck to paycheck, while the neighbors who live below their means ( and possibly have a higher income) buy a 3 YO used car, and have hundreds of thousands of $ in their  401K, IRA and Retirement funds, and are making a nice simple wedding they can afford.

Here are some excerpts that make you wonder, how we've come to such a state of financial ignorance.
"Our family is solidly middle class, with everything that implies. we usually carry credit card debt from month to month"
spent $ 67,000

"And while the business is doing well,we still have some debt to pay off"
" we didn't have any money in savings when our daughter got engaged"
"Still, even if we can afford it, we intend to curb the spending next time"
spent $151,000

"we live from paycheck to paycheck, and i wasn't going above my means to conform to communal standards. and then i did."
spent $94,000

These high cost weddings are a symptom of an overall issue of not living within one's means.

Re: POLL: Wedding expenses in the frum Community - BH for simchos? or out of hand?
It does not need to be elaborate to be costly. Any time someone invites siblings and families you can have enough to make it either a lot of work and stress to do yourself or expensive. Yes you can make them small in sioze that only unmarrieds or couples come and cut it down somewhat, but even then it can be a lot of work for someone who just made a chasuna to do on their own and expensive to buy.

Correct, that was exactly my point. The wedding is only half the problem.

I agree that its not solely about the wedding night, but overall Shabbos Sheva Brochos doesn't seem to be the big issue here.

Re: POLL: Wedding expenses in the frum Community - BH for simchos? or out of hand?
Interesting. Can I ask how many people you had at the wedding? (for the meal)

If your expenses are a more realistic representation of what the average wedding expenses look like and only 12k was spent on the wedding itself, how much is this 250-person-wedding campaign really going to save people? If it cuts 20% off the 12k, that's only a 6% savings on the overall cost of marrying off a child!

I'm not saying that I have a better solution, just wondering how much of a savings people will see from reducing the guest count.

Guest count is not the issue.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
It’s not at all a given that COVID is the new flu. SARS and MERS (other major coronaviruses in recent times) faded away, until we know facts that point otherwise, we can realistically hope this one does too.

A flatter curve means it’s not increasing exponentially, and even flatter means the new cases (and R”L deaths) are level. That’s a flat curve. We would need NO new cases for this to be over.

Are you really equating SARS1 and MERS ? do i have to show you the numbers?
Flatten The Curve was designed so that we don't overwhelm our healthcare system which has been achieved, to actually think this is going away anytime soon, is to bury our heads in the sand, which means we have to return to some societal normalcy ASAP!

So you think that from a purely *Torah* point of view, leaving aside the fact that each minute of life is precious so even just delaying an inevitable demise is worth the world, we in Jewish communities should accept more people dying, possibly far more (we don’t know yet) because of the economy etc.? I’m asking, not arguing.
I am not coming from a halchic perspective.
I will leave the "Pure Tora POV" to the Rabonim.
If we are to assume that nothing will change in the near future, in terms of therapeutics or a vaccine ( an artificial herd immunity) we must face it and try to return society to some type of normalcy...
Every public policy takes into acct. the fact that there are downsides, so we shouldn't make believe that now is any different.

Please let's stop presuming that anyone with a different opinion cares less about lives then those advocating for a continued lockdown.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
My rights, in relation to you, can be limited by government. If most people (the government) believe you walking around without a mask, for example, is excessively dangerous for others, I think they have a right to mandate it. Now the question is, where does that end and overreach begin? I think that’s the debate, not IF they have a right to mandate and restrict certain behaviors.

Unless of course you’re libertarian or an anarchist.

You seem to believe mandating masks and social distancing is fine, but that’s it. There are millions who believe more is fine, and millions who believe even less is allowed.

The greater the imposition and infringement on our liberties the greater the onus on the Government to prove the necessity of said imposition.
Masks and social distancing in public places are a small cost , can't say the same about forcing people to stay home while crashing the World Economy.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
Unless there is some medical solution available very quickly there is going to need to be some sort of plan without it. It will involve some level of risk, but halacha does allow certain tradeoffs of risk to anchor the risks of poverty.

It is comical how people refuse to accept that every public policy has tradeoffs, not to harp on car accidents, but that is exactly the calculation we make when we drive cars, which is why the Auto Insurance industry is giving millions of dollars in refunds.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
How will vulnerable people get essential food and supplies? Presumably it would be really dangerous to go out. I’m genuinely curious, I think there are holes in your plan but it is somewhat logical.

I also think it’s premature, I’m talking in another month or two as we find out more information. Affecting children is a huge game changer IMHO.

Great point, why don't you ask yourself , How will millions of unemployed Americans living paycheck to paycheck afford to buy groceries?
Don't take this the wrong way but saying "I’m talking in another month or two" tells me your way out of touch with the real world on this issue.

The easiest thing for those of us that BH haven't been affected by this Virus directly or indirectly is to sit back and say "lets keep up this Lockdown"

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
That was the amount admitted to the hospital, correct? What if 70% of the population is staying at home. 66 would be a low figure then. We need more info.

Still doesn't change the equation, bottom line is that 66% of those hospitalized were sheltering in place, these are overwhelming numbers.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
Simple math question. 100% shelter at home. How many admitted to hospitals will be from sheltered at home?  :)
Now change that 1% sheltered at home.  ;)

We must ask, what is the Lockdown designed to do? if it is to eradicate the virus then presumably we shouldn't have any cases from that group, and if it's so we don't overwhelm the Hospitals Etc. mission accomplished!

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
Percentage of those infected

The answer to that is pretty simple, we don't add the number of those who tested positive to antibodies to the denominator,  so the CFR will never be adjusted properly in a place like NY,  if we were to have a new hotspot elsewhere in the country, with aggressive testing the CFR will drop precipitously.

Just a few interesting ones off the top of my head:

Bohol Island, Philippines
Nauto, a village deep in the Peruvian amazon.
Shibu Onsen, Japan
Poon Hill, Penang, Malaysia
A soviet prison (I was born there during the soviet era).
A Ukrainian operating table.
Secret military base in Transnistria.
Quba, Azerbaijan (According to wiki, it's the largest Jewish city outside of Israel).
A military compound in Egypt
Volcán Concepción & Volcán Maderas - Ometepe, Nicaragua
Bob Marleys House/Grave - Jamaica
Rybnitza (Ribnitz) - Transnistria
Swam in a Meromictic lake (GIYF) in Malayisa

Should I keep going?

I have obviously been to 100's of villages, towns & cities that i'm confident no one has been to...

There's definitely a fascinating story to be told

Re: Covid-19 Symptoms In Toddlers - Rashes / Hives
i've seem a study (trying to find link) saying there's only 28% chance for members in one household to contract the disease from another member. Secondly we don't know if immunity to the virus solves the cause

So being locked in a house for weeks on end and sharing germs in a household only leads to 28% contracting the Virus , that's pretty good news, presumably outdoors with a mask on and social distancing would be quantifiably less.
Not sure by what you mean "immunity to the virus solves the cause" if it is the concern that those with antibodies may not be immune to reinfection, that's a moot point.

A family member passed away this past Thursday night all alone in the Hospital, which was very sad. We had a Levaya Friday on Long Island, New York. Some of the things I noticed were 2 funerals on the highway going out to the Cemeteries, Funeral going on in the cemetery and the cemetery was full of fresh dug graves. It is very important to be careful and watch your self during this Pandemic. I would like to thank @Dan for setting up this forum and for all the other good things he has done.
