Re: Can we finally say we are over the peak?

I get that for the country overall the economy needs to weigh in as a factor and to some extent, for us too, but we Yidden place a greater premium on lives, especially those of our elders. I, for one, wonít risk my parentsí lives because the caseload will be lower. I donít care how many or what percent. I want my parents alive at all costs and will gladly stay inside for months and lose all my income if thatís what it takes. This is ridiculous.

So you think we should all stay indoors for the next year at least until we have a vaccine?

Re: Delta to tlv opening May 8
These Israel news reports on airline restarting service are just absurd. They search the latest schedules and decides that means it won't be pushed back for the 5th time.
Just like the reports that all United flights were being cancelled because they were zeroed out...

The Israeli quarantine laws currently expire on may 6th and have yet to be extended. So delta resuming flights on may 8th is very possible.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
At this point? Did you change your mind from an earlier position, or you believed all along that we shouldnít be social distancing? Iím curious
If we would have closed the borders in early February and had a tough contact tracing system we could have stopped the virus. At this point the virus is everywhere and tracing is impossible unless no one in this country leaves the house for three weeks and we reset. We have basically completely lost the fight and there is no way we will take the drastic steps at this point to try and reverse the tide. We are in for a long slow burn which will last for an extended period of time.

I personally am a skeptic on social distancing as some sort of long term cure for the virus nor do i think it helps that much. The only way to combat this is a full lockdown with closed borders. Anything else just delays the inevitable

The virus burning through this country until we have some sort of immunity or therapeutic treatment.

Umm.. source? I can use Denmark, Finland, Norway, and South Korea as proof that social distancing measures were and are effective. Your proof that no country has done it from social distancing?

They didn't do it from social distancing! They did it by limiting the initial spread through testing the positives and isolating them and their contacts.

Are you talking about Old camps or New Ones?

The new ones I would be wary, old ones would be stupid to loose a name over money.
Itís not about losing a name. The costs they have to put into preparing camp every year wonít be recouped on their end. Most camp operators live off this the whole year and donít have reserves to cover these costs and refund the parents.

Re: Is there a second wave?
For sure, and that week it spread a ton. My point is by locking down less than one week earlier (when many people were already calling for it, outside of one prominent doctor in Lakewood) we probably would have escaped a tremendous amount of devastation. Probably being the operative word here. All we presumably would have needed to do was not reopen schools, businesses, and shuls after Shabbos, when the real danger was coming to light.
No one was calling for it. Revisionist history

Re: Is there a second wave?
Most telling to me is that the Rabbis whom determined around Purim that the danger was insufficient to close shuls are now using a much lower bar to keep the shuls closed. We must accept that one of the two decisions were mistaken.
I think that the decision then was made without the knowledge of asymptomatic carriers and therefore with a different set of facts now its a different decision.

Hurts how? You mean no money for them after the massive PPP?

PPP won't end up helping them if they can't spend 75 percent of the money within 8 weeks. PUA incentivizes workers to stay at home as long as possible and hurts small businesses when they try and reopen.

Re: Is there any good news in the fight against COVID-19?
This should have been standard. Unfortunately both were released (because of an apparent shortage of beds) after showing strong signs of recovery. We have a lot of questions..
The doomsday projections of hospitals running out of beds seems to have caused lots of deaths. The whole nursing home thing in NY was because they were worried about the model that said they would have 140k hospitalizations. It seems like early discharges may have caused unnecessary death as well.

Re: Is there any good news in the fight against COVID-19?
The medical establishment also did not know about the thickening of the blood right away. People were sent home with dangerously high numbers. Once they realized the issue it was monitored and treated before release.

It also seems like the early intubation of lots of patients caused lots of problems. All hospitals are shifting away from ventilators as anything but a last resort.

Re: Dropping Antibody Levels
When Rav Michel ber weismandel went running around Europe trying to save lives, people said he was crazy.

He died young from heartbreak.

A doctor is working all day every day, he puts his life in danger, he is beyond breaking point.

And some nudnik's come along assuming that "God looks after fools and idiots"

You bash the doctors, you ignore what they say, you get sick and sadly many die and the doctor cries and screams "ad Masai"

He cries for the dead person, he cries for the almanos, he cries for the yesomim.

I know because I talk to these doctors, I talk to their wives who stay up all night as their husband's work 18-20 hour day's, as they pray for their husbands and patient's.

I'm not saying I have the answers, I'm saying that din v'cheshbon is needed.

History will be your judge
Such a disgusting comparison.

A couple weeks ago this doctor spread a rumor that all the Jewish camps were told that they can not open and any camp that was charging you anyways was basically stealing. When confronted about it by camp owners he tried to lie and cover it up but it was very clear that he was caught in one huge lie which could have destroyed the parnassah that some people have spent their entire lives building.

He sent a whole voice note bashing the community of Lakewood for allowing backyard minyanim even though at that point they had only allowed porch minyanim. He even said that he spoke to a doctor who didnít want to allow such outdoor minyanim but the BMG rabbonim forced him to sign the letter.

He may be a doctor and Iím sure he is doing great work on that end but it doesnít give him the right to be motzei laaz on camp owners that they are just stealing parents money. It doesnít give him a right to send around a message bashing rabbonim for stuff that they didnít permit.

We donít bash the doctors, we bash people who so clearly have an agenda against other yidden.

Re: Dropping Antibody Levels
What I donít understand is why the American brain is so binary. Why does it have to be shelter-in-place lockdown <óóó> regular life with nothing in between?
Because our country is so polarized politically and this has become a political issue. The right wants complete reopening and the left wants a shelter in place lockdown.

Re: Dropping Antibody Levels
So people will risk their lives because of polarized politics?

This sounds to me like another symptom of the devolution of the Great American Machine (not a reference to any specific presidential campaign).
Of course it is. The second this became political any chance our country had of a real recovery went out the window.

Re: When do you think International travel will resume?
I didn't say it's not important. But to say that they really rely on it in the context of questioning how long they can hold out with current policies during a public health emergency, is just not accurate.
No country can cut out 6 percent of its GDP for an extended period of time.

Re: Will the truth come out how NYC & NYS made blunder after blunder?
I never changed my mind, I agree with thisIt was the right thing to lock down in the beginning. Itís the right thing to smartly and safely begin an expedited reopening process with regulations in place, guided by data.

NY/NJ bungled it one way in the beginning (by waiting too long, and then once lockdown was imminent, giving a few more brainless days before implementation, which seem to have been an absolute disaster for the spread) and are now bungling it the other way (by taking too long and without using data to make uniform sensible regulations and guidelines to reopening).
I definitely think that the lockdown was the right thing in the beginning. I just think that the government wasted these last two months talking about nothing every day instead of putting policies in place for the future.

Re: Should businesses be given liability protection?
Businesses need to take matters into their own hands and purchase insurance, warn customers, or actually undertake safety measures. Otherwise, customer should be able to sue. Same as any other liability. If you donít want customers to sue, and want to be open, itís your responsibility to ensure that nothing happens or that they canít sue/youíre covered.

A simple sign stating ďwe take no responsibility etc.Ē and basic insurance policy should suffice. Or- hereís an idea- actually show adequate safety procedures.

So businesses don't need to take proper precautions?  ::)

Businesses should have to take proper precautions, but allowing lawsuits opens up a huge can of worms. Businesses should be regulated by the DOH.

No insurance company would underwrite such a risk at an affordable price.

Making the business possibly liable means that any small mistake by an employee can mean financial ruin. Furthermore, a lawsuit would be enough to bankrupt a small business these days even if they ended up not being found liable. Ambulance chasers would be lining up to sue them on the off chance you find one employee on camera coughing without a mask in discovery.

Re: Will the truth come out how NYC & NYS made blunder after blunder?
So the WH is testing every day to inflate numbers? The more tests the better.
My point is that Cuomo wasted so much time on things that were stupid because they were easier to show off.
1. Hospital beds - never close to a shortage
2. Ventilators- same story
3. Testing - excess capacity of 10k a day tests at this point.

He could have used the last two months to allow business to reopen safely instead of going bankrupt, and by actually trying to protect the vulnerable instead of sending the virus into nursing homes.

He complains about the need for federal funding but he couldíve spent that time trying to boost sales tax revenue by allowing stores to reopen safely.

Fascinating, and helps explain why some people donít infect even close family members. Iíve seen this theory before but never so clearly.

Wouldnít we then need a much higher threshold for herd immunity if certain people are way more infectious? Asking out of ignorance
