Re: Time share A "Timeshare" is basically where you buy a property (usually vacation) but only for a certain amount of time per year. For example- you can buy a timeshare in an orlando resort for a 2 bedroom villa for 2 weeks per year. You pay for the actual sale plus a management fee per year. This gives you the right to use this property usually for any 2 weeks during the year as long as it is available and you are considered an "owner". It is made for people who vacation alot in certain areas and enjoy certain properties. Some companies have a few different properties in different vacation spot and "owners can choose to use their timeshare in whichever one they want this gives them flexibility to vacation in different spots every year.

What you are probably hearing about is not what I just explained i.e. actually buying a timeshare, just a timeshare promotion. What it is basically is that properties are always trying to get people to buy timeshares and in order to do so they offer amazing deals to come spend time at their properties (alot of properties are also Hotels and resorts that sell parts off as timeshares) in exchange for a 90 minute sales seminar or a tour of the property which tend to be very aggressive and persuasive.
They may offer a deal to come for a few nights all inclusive for $99 in a hotel that would usually be a few hundred a night or other great deals to entice you to come check them out. Their seminars/sales pitches can actually be very convincing and almost make sense for an uninformed consumer. The key is the fine print where all the management fees come in etc...

Re: Time share What Dan is probably referring to above is to find out how much the timeshares are selling in the secondary market (there is a big market for this as people eventually realize they cant afford it or no longer want to use it etc... and they try to flip their timeshares) that way when they try their salespitch you would have an easy out by telling them how much you can buy one for less than they are asking and you wont need to sit through any further harassment.

I have spoken to people who have had great experiences doing these promotions and had a great vacation for very cheap. The main thing was to get the seminar out of the way and know how to deal with the selling tactics. Others have said it might not have been worth it.

Re: New trend - Instant approval life insurance Just an update with my experience with Haven Life. I didnt use them for myself (as i already have a policy) I was helping a family member who is close to 60 get a term policy. They did need the medical exam done, but in the end approved a 15yr $250k policy with premiums lower than any other quote I got. (Around $300 less per year on average).

Thanks to the OP, as this was the push needed to finally get the coverage needed.

Re: Manhattan Kosher Restaurants I just got an invite earlier this week to my company's Holiday party to take place at the Prime Bentley in December (we did it there the last 2 years). I wonder if they will still do events or if we need to find a new location.
I sent a note to the planners.

Definitely find a new place , prime is gone
Confirmed, party cancelled- working on a new venue... Surprising that they took our reservation and deposit last week.

Any major corporations there?
yes.
To be fair, a lot of the email addresses are "shipping@toycorp.com" and the like, as opposed to direct email contacts, but there are plenty of those as well.

Re: Trump-Republican tax plan bad for large families There is another great strategy if you want to fund a DAF. You are allowed to donate stocks, and the donation is valued at the current market rate. This actually results in a double benefit because you dont pay any cap gains that you may have had.
For example, say you bought $5k AAPL a year ago and it is now worth $10k, when you fund the DAF with these shares you save on the $5k cap gains, on top of the $10k charity deduction you are getting. A variation of this strategy would be, even if you wanted to retain your AAPL position, you can essentially donate the shares, purchase new shares at the same time to replace them and now your position has a new higher cost basis, for your eventual sale thereby saving you on future cap gains.
I am thinking of doing this with any stock position that I currently have high percentage gains, in order to reset the cost basis and maximize the charity deduction at the same time.
I contacted The Donors Fund and they confirmed they can accept stocks as long as they arent penny stocks or unlisted stocks, but prefer it to be valued at least $10k but may be negotiable.

Re: Trump-Republican tax plan bad for large families Sorry I forgot to point out one important point, the below would only work with long term cap gains and not for short term cap gains (stocks must have been purchased prior to 2017).

Re: Manhattan Kosher Restaurants The 34th St battle of "how many restaurants can you shove into one location" escalates ...

Paprika, added "Chicken & Kone" ( http://chickenkone.com/ ) which is a waffle cone with crispy chicken and a sauce topping of your choice. I spoke to the manager and they also have "Pitaland" coming which will be a fast food menu at a lower price point like Chicken burgers etc.
So they now have 4 menu's including Toastie.

Kosher in Midtown (aka Eden Wok) across the street has 6;
1)   Eden Wok
2)   Koshe Poke
3)   Pitopia
4)   Sushi Donut
5)   Teryaki Wok
6)   Buffalo2go

Mendy's is 2, including "Bedford on Park".

In other news "Basta", also opened up on that block- 34th between Madison and Park.

Re: Sous Vide Master thread The results were amazing! Best thing I ever made sous vide. It was a real hit with the crowd, even the people who don't usually like their meat this red.
I did 22 hours at 136 degrees, pre seared in a pan, post in the oven as per the recipe.

Does anyone have any good ideas for a shoulder London broil that doesn't include any onion and garlic of any kind nor anything that is high fodmap?
earlier this week I did a pretty basic SV with London broil shoulder that came out great. I just did salt, pepper and garlic powder on the meat, put a bit of red wine and soy sauce in the bag. I set to 135 for about 20 hours and finished with a pan sear. Next time I would just add a bit of spices or rub before searing. I think this would turn out well with less time, it was just convenient to set it the night before

Any barber recommendations that take more than 3-5 minutes for a haircut? Anyone I’ve used is way too quick to be thorough.
I'm happy with Aviel (732) 731-9371. He is in the pine st area and soon moving to the new Marcy plaza.

My understanding is that Bais Tova is only for students and families of Bais Tova and Shiras Devorah

interesting, my daughter's school was supposed to have boxes on Friday, when I asked, I was told to just go to Bais Tova.

It's possible they share the same food program.

Re: Lakewood cases Hi,
I want to share my story as a data point and maybe it will help someone (I may xpost for visibility);
On Monday 8/10 I tested positive for Covid. It seems pretty clear that I was infected at a simcha last week, either at the Aufruf or at the Wedding last Tuesday 8/4. I started not feeling well on Thursday morning but thought it was just allergies or a cold, which i deal with often. I felt a little bit better friday night and shabbos morning and went to a small local minyan in my neighborhood, but by shabbos afternoon I was in bed.
I only found out on Monday 8/10 that there were a lot of people not feeling well from that simcha and testing positive, so I quickly went to get tested (in Friendly Urgent Care). They told me there were a few positive tests within that last hour, one of them I know is a relative of mine who was also at the wedding. They indicated that there seems to be at least 2 or more wedding this past week that are at the center of a bunch of positive cases.
I quickly notified whoever I was in contact with, but so for unfortunately at least 3 people got infected by me. This is by far the worst feeling for me, worse than actually being sick. I wish everyone would be as quick to alert people as I was- as I would likely have been able to avoid infecting anyone, and would have taken precautions as soon as I felt sick.

There is definitely an outbreak right now, which will hopefully subside quickly if people take precautions, it just pains me that people didnt feel "shame" or whatever it is, that stops them from reacting responsibly right away.
This is affecting people in Lakewood, Monsey and Boro park (and catskills of course) who were at the is wedding, and some of the other weddings that were affected (infected?).

If you are a high risk person, you should be extra careful for the next little while (at minimum).

p.s. it is extra frustrating as my family was so careful for such a long time. I refused to daven indoors, for a long time and was made fun of because of that.

Re: Is Covid Spiking in Boro Park?
In fairness, frum Baltimore does not seem to be having higher spread than NY/NJ right now and I don't see much of a reason why someone from there should need the same guidelines as someone from FL.
This might be just anecdotal, but if you followed my posts on the other threads- I have been sick for the last 3 weeks, as well as a bunch of other family members and wedding attendees (BP wedding), which seems pretty clear that it originated with someone from Baltimore that attended the Aufruf and then tested positive. Additionally a few other families I know were infected by me before I realized that I was sick with Covid.
Just a reminder- when "they say" that people are having it much "Milder" now than back in March and April, they are mainly referring to the danger part. B"h my levels were fine, and so were most of the other people I know- but a few of us (myself included) were pretty sick for close to 3 weeks. I was barely able to function, and it was a horrible experience. In any other context we would never use the term "milder" or "not so bad"- except when compared to what was going on back then.

Re: Do you know someone who has had Coronavirus after Pesach?
Iíve been weirdly sick now for a week+, no fever but chills and sweats, sore throat, lethargy and fatigue, upset stomach, and sniffles. Negative PCR test.

My local urgent care wonít test me for the flu, which is quite upsetting. My primary care physician offers COVID hours that donít work for me, so I canít go there. Really wondering if itís flu/strep, a confirmation would be nice.
interesting that you're negative, symptoms sound very similar to what I just had when I tested positive.

Refuah Shelema!  Hopefully you have it very mild and it passes quickly!
PM me if you have any questions or just want to compare notes, as I just went through this recently

Re: Stocks
I doubt the price will drop too quickly. Once it received this amount of attention it will stay a popular company (at least in short term) which is good for the stock price.
They literally have 1 employee... Not sure there is much to maintain its popularity.

Re: Stocks
This is truly a question for the chachamim of ddf. I watched some parts of the congressional hearing today for amusement, and everyone is talking about the reddit guy's testimony. He has a poster of a cat in the background that says "hang in there" and everyone thinks its a message to people holding GME that they will recover. However, my diyyuk is that one of the first things he said is 'I am not a cat'- so while the cat poster might be telling you to hang in there, his advice is the opposite. What do you think?

(Disclaimer: I do not have any shares of gme and have never owned any previously, not counting anything that may have incidentally been part of an etf or mutual fund)
pretty sure he was playing off both his username and the viral video going around where the lawyer on zoom is claiming he isn't a cat ;
