Re: Shutterfly Master Thread @Dan

If you make an order for non free stuff above 39usd you get free shipping via promo SHIP39 you can add a mug for $1+  buy using code FUNFREEBIES and upgrading for something priced a bit higher. If you get it for free there will be a shipping charge. This only works because it deducts a regular priced mug and the shipping fee is not added because its not free. Expires OCT 6.

Re: Hidden City Ticketing
Just wanted to share a recent experience. Feel free to flame me if you think I handled anything wrong; I did a bunch of research and asked in a bunch of forums prior to travel, and nobody warned me about what eventually happened. I specifically asked if IST as a hidden city ticket was sketchy, and everyone reacted like I was being a nervous nellie.

Anyway, I booked a flight for my wife in J on AF, by doing hidden city with IST as the final destination, it was 1/2 the points than they wanted for the flight just to CDG. I was going to be in the back with my kids.

Check in wasn't a problem. AF wanted to know her plan for a visa, but she told them she'd get one in the airport, and they let her go.

At the gate, she was called to the jetway by the gate agent, where she was met by two home land security agents. They proceeded to rifle through her luggage while they interrogated her for over 20 minutes, until the entire plane had boarded. They thought it was suspicious she was traveling to Istanbul alone, as a single woman, especially with her family traveling to a different destination. She mentioned a colleague from IST that had told her how nice it was there, and they promptly demanded that person's contact info as well as her sister's contact info at our final destination.

Anyway, eventually they let her on the plane and did not tip of AF. I know she probably should have just told them she was never intending to actually go to IST, but she was concerned they would tell AF and AF would keep her off the plane, and so she got nervous.

I'm not telling this story for any feedback, just a word of warning to be careful which hidden city tickets you end up targeting, as not every city is the same apparently (doubt this would have happened if it said she was going to Dublin).

Cool story, with happy ending.

You always need to play if your going to final destination.

Re: 15k RT to Hawaii on UA through Turkish
Very simple questions, but when transferring Citi TYP to Turkish (trying to book 15,000 Hawaii flights and at the beginning of this crazy convoluted process), do you put the letters TK or just the 9 numbers after it. Don't want to do anything to mess the transfer up. Also, does anyone know if there are any restrictions when transferring or booking with Turkish on United (for instance, Korean wouldn't let me book more than 5 people including myself on Delta, and they all had to be family members and verified beforehand with birth certificates) regarding family members. Thanks!
Just FYI. Reports on FT are that TK cant do partner bookings at the moment.

Re: What Do You Do For Kosher Food While Traveling?
For this exact reason, I love booking timeshare properties.  There are a ton with Marriott, Wyndham and Hilton that generally all have full kitchens, free parking, etc.  Many are stunning high end resorts or you have access to all the amenities of the sister hotel next door, without the resort and parking fees and with full kitchen and laundry.

How do you book them? off second hand sites?

Possible Scammer EWR I was in EWR, had a Israeli gentleman come over to me explaining in Hebrew that he lost his wallet and needs a train to DC. He asked for $86.

Realizing he his most likley a scam. He sort of gave up on getting money. I then picked up his carry on and it was weight less. He opened it and had it packed with a pair of pants and a seltzer bottle. Not a typical traveler.

He ran away.

Re: Mauritius or Seychelles
any info on award flights from nyc i understand its a big q but any help is appreciated
Mauritius - u can use Ethiad miles for Air Mauritius. They dont have gr8 availability form EU but do have decent form SA. U can search in EF.

Seychelles - You  can go with Saudi Airline - I believe they make 1 seat available in F, u can book with DL for 85K

This is based on what I remember form researching. I'm sure their are more options  such as SA from JNB.

Re: Star Alliance Award Search Tips

I need advice from experienced users.

I have 135,820 ANA miles.

I would like to fly Business NYC-TLV non stop end of January.

What's better? Booking a regular United flight and then use the mileage for an award upgrade to Business or purchase a Business award?
Its hard to find availability with UA.
Wouldn’t you need United miles to upgrade a revenue ticket?
U can upgrade *A with certain fare class purchases, not sure details with ANA and usually fair class requirements dont make it a viable deal.

Re: Dubai Master Thread
So in theory I don’t really have a problem wearing a cap, I wear caps for comfort reasons in America or Europe as well. However I’ve been to 72 countries and never was I told by a government official how to dress and how not to dress. If someone wants to wear a cap because he feels threatened (yes I know some people here think that they need to wear a cap anywhere that’s outside their neighborhood... but with Pittsbourgh and jersey city perhaps they’ll start wearing caps in Flatbush and Cleveland as well...) no problem but I think that this is something that should be decided individually and I personally do not think that there’s any issue wearing a Yarmulke in the UAE and so I was told by many time who did the same. I also wore it in Ras Al Khaima and other Emirates which are much more conservative and with a much larger local population then Dubai.

However, if I would’ve known that there’s a law prohibiting it, I would obviously respect the laws of the country wherever it is or I just won’t go to that country.

It was a long story but at the end the high ranking officer told me something in the lines that is quoted in the ami article above, however he did say that it was a requirement not to wear it and not just a suggestion (I made sure to clarify that).

I did have conversations with all the officers and got friendly with them. I was just very surprised that there is such a rule as this is not the image that the UAE seem to be portraying (especially with the year of tolerance), never mind the fact that they’re allowing in Israelis for the 2020 expo, I wonder if they will make it official while applying for a visa (or whichever procedure Israelis will have to do) or will just abandon this rule which in my opinion is wrong.

I also spoke with several members of the Jewish community in Dubai and they were very surprised to hear this - they’ll inquire about it with their contact in the secret police. What they told me was the same as I wrote above, that for their knowledge there’s no issue to wear anything in Dubai but that most local Jews prefer not to.
Who cares if you could or you are able to, use common sense.

I've been to many ME countries where muslims are the majority., I can have a conversation with some guy and possibly let them know I'm Jewish but to stick it in their face?
Many dont even know what a yarmulke is but all you need is one guy and then the country becomes UNSAFE.

Basics for security is, blend with the crowd.

Re: Amex F/R Master Thread
Thats exactly what I am trying to find out, what would be my preferred choices, which FF program (that transfers from AMEX) is most valuable ?

It's not only flat value to yourself that you have to take into consideration its also the flexibility and tolerance of the program if you plan on selling in the future.

I would say the easiest would be Auroplan but its still a ?? what the new program will look like. It's easy to sell auroplan plan and usally hovers in the 1.2 + range.

Wherever you tranfer make sure you will not go over  the daily transfer limit if there is one.

As a side note; you can sell all now at market value and always buy at market rate and transfer to any program you want. You won't be losing to much in the middle.

Car rental/car hire from Cape Town/CPT: has anyone been able to waive CDW and/or make use of primary car rental insurance benefit on a Chase card – or secondary car rental insurance on AmEx?

- Budget website for CPT airport says CDW is mandatory and can't be waived.

- AVIS website for CPT airport says CDW is optional.

- Any other suggestions? Worth it to just splurge on car rental company's insurance?
I rented  hertz and bidvest, non airport locations and got it waived.

When transferring Bonvoy to AA in 60k increments. UI does not show additional  5K. norm?

Was always like this and its not limited to AA.
You can check your account activity and you should see there is an addition and subtraction reflecting the 5k points you'll be getting per 60k transfer (it can take some time to show in activity).
Weird way to do things. Why make it so complicated?

Over 24 hrs, each 8-hr period or part thereof* $6 for a maximum of $18 in a 24hr period.

It usally takes me 10min from pulling into the lot to stepping into the terminal using the shuttle.

Re: Escort Passport 9500iX Laser Radar Detector $218.11 LEOA!
That's true, even the most expensive ones still won't pick up everything and will still make mistakes.
I heard the Valentine is very good.
Besides for the escort being great as well

The R7 is currently the best dash mount radar on the market. You can read https://www.vortexradar.com/best-radar-detectors/
Everyone has their own needs but overall the R7 is the way to go. This site referenced is the DD for Radars with all nitty gritty testing and details.

Good means, filtering false threats, stealth  and most importantly range.

The valentine was out of stock for a year +, today was literally the first day it's back In stock with a v.2.

The R7 picks up all radar, but not good at lazer.

In general if a radar Detector, detects lazer, ur toast.
You need a jammer to first shift/jam the hit and then you kill your jammer so cop can get a good reading.

If the trueway is empty  and cop is shooting, this will wont help you since by the time this detector detects the laser that cop already scanned you

A detector detects radar at times from a mile+ away before the cops radar gun can get a good reading, think of it like smelling food before you get into the kitchen.

A radar gun does not help for lazer but at night cops usually dont usally lazer in low traffic, especially in areas such as the thruway where there are not many cars and can take some time for a single car to pass. Just imagine holding a gun in your hand and looking thru its scope waiting for that one car that'll pass in 20 minutes.
Radar sits and does the work  on  it's own.

Lazer by day can be an issue, but consider that using lazer requires a being in a stationary position which will usually be reported on waze in no time. Also, in some areas cops dont even have lazer. You can familiarize with the areas you drive In  to see what cops use., or read some radar forum's.

Well not exactly, the radar detectors are there to detect a radar being shot at your car, hence the range of the radar detector I suppose is working with a much longer ranch to give you a warning, vs the actual gun the officer is using to shoot at the vehicles.
Yes and No
As described above, if your detector can pick up the signal then the cops radar can reach your car but not necessarily get a reading. Your only smelling because its reaching you.

You usally detect a bounce off something or a far week signal before the cop has a direct line of sight catch.

If you go on youtube you can watch a few demos and you'll get a good idea of how it works.

Re: Is your Shul Secretly Open Right Now?
I just confirmed what I knew to be true that my shteibel has been open for the Rabbi and his immediate family and his cousin and his immediate family who all live locally. I dont really have an issue with that. Except, now over yom tov there were at least 3 other people that joined the rabbi's minyan.   I also confirmed that  the other shteibel I daven in has been having daily minyanim too. I'm seriously considering not going back to these shuls after all of this is over. Dont really know what the alternatives are either.
Why not?

There are many mekoros that in time of need we go to shul to daven.

If you disagree you can just not attend.

I personally know of ppl that stayed home for many weeks and got the virus.

It is sad that a post office can have 40 ppl sometimes close together because its called essential by government while our shuls have to he closed even with proper social distancing.

Re: Is your Shul Secretly Open Right Now?
Sorry, but if it's important enough, there will be a leader who will stand up publicly and say to make outdoor minyanim. I've only seen rabbonim asser it, with one going as far as saying that participating gives you the din of rotzeach.
You should do what ur Rav tells you.

But think about it for a minute.

A Grocery Store is OK.
USPS is OK.
WallMart OK.
Target OK.

Shull not ok.

Maybe we shall be open with proper cleaning and distancing guidance in place where enforcement is stricter then USPS or Target.

Re: Antisemitism related to Coronavirus
This is the part I don’t get (and the main difference in Lakewood is that the Rabbanim and doctors came out unified and strongly against making minyanim and everyone listens to a few main poskim/Roshei Yeshiva)- why do we need Rabbanim to tell people to use their brains? Seriously, how did this become a Jewish thing? It’s common sense, like looking both ways before crossing the street and going to a doctor if you’re not well.

Those times in LKWD are over.

I think we all understand having a title = nothing, but that your father might of been qualified for a job.

In LKWD I personally know of many respectfull rabonim that agree a minyan can be made outside only if proper distancing can be adhered to. Those rabonim understand politics and I believe you do as well. They understand they can say something in public against the "establishment" but will cause alot of headaches and fights, so they just issue thier guidance to thier own misspalil when they ask.

Re: Is your Shul Secretly Open Right Now?

Name one instance where they said so when going to Shul was in itself a sakana?

It doesn't bother me so much that you're being irresponsible with other peoples lives, what bothers me is that your entire life is likely worthless. If you are going to a Minyan when God clearly wants you not to, then all the times you did go are not because God did want you to. What a waste.

I am not going to Shul, because my Rav said we shall be closed.

I stayed home before the CDC recommended social distancing [look at my earlier posts] . When I go out in public I use a N95 mask that I have sitting in my house for a few years.

You decided God dosnt want us to daven with minyan. If your Rav thinks so then dont go to Minyan. But if ones Rav thinks there is a setting where it is permitted dont just say his opinion is worth nothing.

Re: Is your Shul Secretly Open Right Now?
No shuls are not essential. What part of this don't you understand?
To you, they might not be, but to many they are. There are many whom believe prayer in shul has a power over prayer outside.

If USPS  locations staying open is called essential why cant a shul? And many old people work at USPS. As far as I know, UPS offers home pick up and a mail box works just fine in most cases. The risk of death for USPS to remain open is beyond.

While one or many Religious leaders might think his place of worship should be closed [ such as mine] there are some that think they should be open.

If social distancing can be practiced in a grocery why can't it  be practiced in a place of worship.

There are many that closed because they know it cant be enforced. But there are some that think it can be enforced.

Remember; your essential is not someone elses and someone else's might not be yours.
