Re: Booking El Al with Qantas - master thread
Can someone please share the WhatsApp number for booking seats. I called Elal to select seats and they said to call Qantas because it was booked through Qantas. I knew they were wrong but I called Qantas anyway and they of course said Elal has to do seat selection as the operating carrier. So instead of going in circles I'd like to contact them via WhatsApp.

Bangkok, Koh Samui, Singapore and Maldives TR This is my first trip report and Iím excited to share it.

I will review many details of my trip but particularly I will detail prices and deals I got throughout the trip.

I first booked the Waldorf Astoria Maldives on February 15th, 2019 when I read that they will be opening. The Maldives was a destination my wife wanted to go since we got married 3 years ago but was mostly a far dream. We like brand new hotels and we learned about the WA opening it was like a sign that now itís the time to go there.
It was about a year in advance of the booking and was mostly a theoretical booking that we didnít know the chances of it happening. At that time our daughter was only 7 months old and we didnít know what to expect when she will be 18 months. We already traveled with her to France, The Bahamas, and Cayman Island and everything went smoothly with her. One thing was sure, weíll take her with us all the time in our vacation, that the education we got ourselves and we just love being with her on vacation seeing her happy face all the time.

We then decided to go ahead with it and to add the Conrad Koh Samui to the trip, I talked to my wife a few months before about this hotel on a cliff with private pool in each villa and it was definitely in our bucket list. It did take time though to convince her to go to Asia as it will be our first time and my wife had some phobia, but then she fell in love with it. We weren't sure if we go before or after the Maldives and we finally booked 5 nights before arriving in the Maldives.
At that time we didnít have tickets and we knew that we can cancel or modify it at any time.

A few months later I booked the tickets. I knew I will book with Amex points transferred to AC because of the 20% bonus at that time and their cheap rate for lap infant.

Flights booking:
I transferred 255K Amex to AC with the 20% to get 305K and I booked the following:
JFK-ZRH-BKK in J with Swiss, for 77.5AC ◊2 +62.40 CAD taxes (+100+2.10 CAD for lap infant)
BKK-USM in Y with PG, rev ticket for $91◊2 (+$40 for lap infant)
USM-SIN in Y with SilkAir rev ticket for $353 for both adults and lap infant (there wasnít availability in points).
SIN-MLE in Y with SQ, 9065 SQ miles ◊2 + $74 in taxes (+$58 lap infant) (I booked it previously for 18K SQ each but in late January they came up with the 51% off for February 2020 redemption booking and my flight was still available so I cancel the previous one and rebooked for 9065 SQ each, I was later refunded on the cancellation fee). I called them to attach my USM-SIN ticket with the SIN-MLE ticket to check baggage through.
MLE-SIN-TPE-JFK in J with SQ & BR (-last leg), for 75K AC ◊2 (+100+55.70 CAD for lap infant)

Hotels booking:
Marriott FNC (35K) for the St Regis Bangkok 1 night
380K HHonors for 4+1 nights at the Conrad Koh Samui (When I booked it I was short of 5K points on my account at that time and the representative added them for free to my account before making the booking)
240K HHonors + 1 Weekend night certificate for 3 nights at the Waldorf Astoria Maldives

After booking the hotels and flights, I began to read a lot about the Conrad USM and the WAI on FT. I read all the pages of these 2 hotels for a month and I knew exactly which villa I will take and what to expect pretty much. I can say that I enjoyed reading every page there and it helped me a lot also for a deal I got in one of them that I will share later on.

The day in Bangkok was mostly to catch up some jet lag and rest before heading to Koh Samui. In Singapore, we just had a few hours to go visit around between our flights. 2 weeks before our flights, my younger brother went on Shlichus for a year in Singapore so we had another reason to be there.

Iím now already back from the trip and Iíll begin to go over the trip in detail.

Re: Bangkok, Koh Samui, Singapore and Maldives TR Flight from JFK to Zurich and Bangkok with 7 hours layover, January 25th-27th:

Our flight from JFK was scheduled for 9:10 pm on Saturday night (LX 15). We live in Crown Heights with 2 cars and we didn't want to ask from family members to keep moving our cars for alternate side parking. I made 2 round trips to the Ohel in Queens the previous Thursday and Friday to bring the 2 cars and park them there and ask also a blessing from the Rebbe for a safe trip. We could've gone on Saturday night first to the Ohel with the 2 cars and then to the airport but then it would've been too stressful and we'll have to rush after shabbos.

All our luggage were ready before shabbos. After shabbos, we quickly made Havdola, showered and packed the last items including YO Yogurts for my daughter from the fridge. All other food items were dry items.
We took an Uber to the airport and arrive around 7 pm at JFK. They quickly printed our boarding passes, took our luggage and we went to the TSA pre line that was emptier than the priority line. I don't have myself TSA but always make sure to put my daughter under my ticket and I usually get it automatically.
The Swiss lounge was under renovation so they told us to go to the Etihad lounge instead.

We ordered 2 Mojito but I drank most of both

We saw already a few Chasidishe Yidden in the lounge so we knew that there will be Yidden in the business cabin.
I reserved in advance the bulkhead seats 6 D-G and at my right (6K, maybe you read this ) it was a yid. (the best seats on the A333 and B777 are 4 & 5 as they are together with First but it's reserved for Senator & HON circle members or 24 hours before departure).

We flew on the A333 which is a bit different and older than the LX B777 but overall it looks the same.
They brought us some toys for the baby (We got also in the 2nd leg so I kept 1 aircraft for myself )

We slept a good portion of the flight, my daughter slept together with my wife.

The KSML was Borenstein (VK) on this flight, the meat from the main dish was good.

Before they served breakfast pretty much everyone davened in their seat, the Europeans didn't seem to like it, but who cares.

After landing we went to buy train tickets to the city and we headed to Maadan Bakery.

We sat at a table and ordered a few items; 2 coffees, a smoothie, a salad, a bread, and a croissant sandwich for $43. I asked the lady there to warm up my lox croissant and she refused, then when she saw that I'm insisting she grabbed it from my hands and gave me a bad attitude. Unfortunately, I'm too used to the bad European service but this was surprisingly bad, thankfully, that was the only bad service we got during our trip.
I have a T-MOBILE family plan with unlimited 2G data and text in 210 countries so I had minimum data wherever I went. Enough to use the map and some texting.

We then went back to the train to go to Uetliberg which has trays and nice lookouts to the whole city. We took the small tray and went to the top. Our daughter was sleeping comfortably in the yoyo and it was a sunny day. It was interesting to see many small families with children coming there for a Sunday outing. You could've seen the family values they have and how well behaved the children are, things that you observe only when you're a parent yourself.

We took some pictures and headed back to the train station that will take us to the airport.

It was still 3 hours before the flight and we went to the Business lounge E. It's a very spacious lounge with floor to ceiling glass windows on both sides of the lounge and an outdoor area that you can watch the planes.

I had some phone calls to do to my customers and the time was perfect to call NY in the morning. I went to one of the call room and had some work done.

We went then to take a shower, you need to give them the boarding passes and they give a key to one of the showers room. The shower was large and very modern. One sure thing is that it was the highlight of Swiss air for my wife.

We then went to our flight and had the seats 8 D-G. I selected months in advance the bulkhead seats but in September they change the flight schedule by 5 minutes and that caused the removal of my selected seats. I realized only a month before the flight what happened but it was too late. Luckily I got at JFK 2 seats with direct aisle access as the flight was full.
The B77 was more modern and seats were a bit more spacious but I could've felt the smaller legroom (I'm 6'1).
My daughter got more toys.

Sometimes I'm wondering if the toys were for my daughter or for me

The food wasn't good but I got a small Barkan wine and smoked fish that made me very happy.

Breakfast with some French cheese.

Second Shacharis after only 12 hours.

We landed in Bangkok and saw that everyone was wearing a mask because of the virus...not so reassuring but there was no way I would change my trip as I spent so much time and energy to make it perfect (and I went to the Ohel also).
We cleared immigration pretty fast and took our luggage. I knew I had to withdraw cash for the taxi so I went to the nearest ATM and withdrew 1500 Baht. I used my Sofi card that I transferred money from my checking account a week before (I opened in October and made a few $100's in referrals) and they automatically refunded me the 220 Baht ATM fees I was charged. It was my first time trying Sofi for an ATM and I was very impressed by how fast they refunded it.
I opened the grab app and ordered a taxi SUV (I checked before the trip how can I pay and the only way was to top up with AliPay, that's why I needed the cash, and the app lets pay in cash at the end of the trip).
I was pretty impressed by how everything went very smoothly on a continent that we're visiting for the first time.
The taxi arrived after 5 minutes to our arrival gate, it was a nice Toyota SUV and we drove to the St Regis Bangkok. The trip cost was 619 Baht.

Re: Bangkok, Koh Samui, Singapore and Maldives TR January 27-28 STR Bangkok.

It took us an hour to arrive at the STR Bangkok with some traffic towards the end. They quickly took all our stuff from the cab and brought us to the 12th floor where the reception is. It's really a beautiful and tall building and was happy to spend just a FNC of 35k for it.

I previously had the check-in in the app for the Met suite as a platinum member and was pretty excited about it because usually they give an upgrade to the deluxe room only. We arrived at the reception and they brought us cold towels and drinks.

The check-in process took a bit too long and then he tells me that we got the deluxe room. I show him my app where it shows the Met suite, he makes a phone call to let me know that I can get the suite only at 3 pm but the deluxe room is ready for us now. It was only 1 pm so we just took the deluxe room, besides that the view is much nicer in the deluxe room. On my way out, the chef Dwayne Krisko comes towards me telling me that he has some salads from the Kosher restaurant for us.
I emailed the hotel a few weeks before to inquire if they can take care of the Kosher food from the Chabad restaurant with delivery and I'll pay them directly. They replied to me positively but I didn't follow up with it.
Now I felt a bit embarrassed that he went to order for me already from the menu. I told him that I really appreciate it and please send it and bill it to my room. He insisted that the hotel wants to offer it as they want to satisfy me etc. That was nice! We had a chat there, he told me that he came 2 months ago to Bangkok and he worked in many hotels around the world and also in Miami so he's a bit familiar with Kosher food.
We went to the room, showered and ordered 2 burgers and the roast beef teriyaki. I placed the order by WhatsApp (found online) and paid with a link. Total was 1120 Baht including 150 for delivery.
Our room (1704) was right on top of the pool with a nice view of the golf park.

The food was ok but we were starving.

I also ordered from JCafe some sandwiches for the next morning breakfast, and a friend from Chabad in Bangkok brought it to me since he had to pick up some American sim cards from me.
In the afternoon we went for a stroll in the nearby park, it was nice and quiet and the baby was sleeping in the stroller.

We also went to sit next to the pool and I took my daughter for Ďhakofosí around the pool for who knows how long.

It was our first day in Asia and I was so impressed by how everyone from the staff personnel were smiling and trying to play with my daughter. They all were nice and patient.

We went then to the Happy hour cocktail and told them we want the Platinum menu. It's a cocktail menu to order without any price complimentary for platinum members and up. We took 2 drinks and went to sit outside with the same view from our room.

When we came back to the room our Butler prepared us a nice surprise in our bathroom and we were thrilled.

In the meantime they brought us the salad that the chef ordered for us. We ate them later, it was fresh with lots of dressings on the side.
We didn't have time to visit Bangkok and we were too tired for it. That day was just to get a break from the flights and to catch up a bit with the jet lag before going to Koh Samui. I also gave my Butler that day 8 dresses to press complimentary for platinum members and they came back the next morning.

The room was spacious with a large bathroom open to the room with slide walls. We loved the room but weren't too excited because we knew where we headed the next day.

In the morning we woke up early and went to breakfast to get some fruits, veggies, fruits juices and smoothies.

They were very nice to us, especially towards my daughter. We ate after our sandwiches in the room and made ourselves ready to check out.

Flight with Bangkok Airways was at 11:30 am so we left the hotel at 9 with a taxi from Grab.
My daughter threw up in the car but nothing that we couldn't handleÖ the ride was shorter than the previous day. That ride was 735 and I gave the driver extra for the incident.
We checked in our luggage, we had more than 50kg but they didn't say anything (we were allowed 20+20+10).
We went to the Blue ribbon lounge with the PP card, just to have a quiet place for ourselves (because there's nothing more than that there).
We boarded on time, the plane was full but everything goes smoothly and fast, unlike other countries. We had fruits in our 'KSML' which was funny. (Why do they serve a free meal in a short hour flight?!)

At USM we had to wait a long time for our suitcases, DW & daughter went for a troll in the small airport and I was melting in the heat.
But who doesn't like small airports?

After our suitcases came we went towards the parking and the Conrad driver waited for us with the Conrad sign.

(someone was holding this sign... I was confused because it didn't say Conrad on it and the booking was on my wife's name anyway...)

He gave us cold towels and offered us water in the car. As I requested in the email they had a cute car seat waiting in the car, because I love when the hotel doesn't forget small details.

Re: Canada closing borders to most travellers who are not citizens
Quoting from someone in Montreal who spoke to border control and said that even US citizens in Canada are not allowed to come into America and are stuck there. As for Canadian citizens, they are being allowed into Canada for now. A minor who is a US citizen can go into Canada with a parent who is a Canadian citizen. However, a spouse who is not a Canadian citizen is not able to come into Canada even with proof of marriage.
Sounds very strange that a country wouldn't allow a person to go back to his home country. Especially that they announced it to be effective the same day without prior notice. DROBC and use common sense.

If I'll manage I will post later on a video that is going around on WhatsApp of the bochurim that arrived in Israel being told their status. They are basically all being moved to isolation at a hotel in Jerusalem. Each getting their own room. Anyone presenting symptoms will be moved to a medical facility. Health ministry is assuming anyone arriving from Crown Heights is positive.

All videos with the hotel tour...

How is my flight not cancelled between USA and Canada if border is closed? Trying to get money back from AA but they say flights is operating as scheduled.
If you're Canadian you're allowed to enter.
Border is not closed, there are restrictions to enter.

Re: Flights still operating (USA-Canada)?
I am a USA citizen who was supposed to travel for wedding but not going for obvious reasons. To my knowledge, the border is closed to people like me.
Yes you're denied entry if you don't have immediate family or can't quarantine.
You can also receive a travel credit regardless if you can fly or not, because all airline issued a waiver (usually only free change or future travel credit).
Now look back at your question, you asked how the flight is not cancelled since the border is closed?
The border is not closed and your flight might still fly. If you want a refund to the original payment, you'll need better than that.

Re: Flights still operating (USA-Canada)?
didn't realize is still open if able to self-quarantine. have any suggestions on getting a refund?
I was banking on fact that "border was closed" to get my money back.
You can definitely get a credit for future travel.
https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/travel-alerts.jsp

All of that assuming your flight is in the next 2-3 days, otherwise wait a bit, it will be probably cancelled.

Can anyone show me where R' Chaim said not to have minyanim? All I saw that he said was about people who are either sick, or in contact with someone sick or who is supposed to be in quarantine by the health ministry. It doesn't seem that he has changed his opinion.
He didn't. Or to be more clear, no one asked him...

Re: Corona virus and your shull There are 2 main differences between the FAKE 'Mesirus Nefesh' of today's Minyonim and the mesirus nefesh in Russia and the Holocaust (besides the fact that it's against the Rabbonim and so against the torah).
1. Back then it was שעת השמד where the Gemara says אפי' ערקתא דמסאנא (Google it).
2. They weren't putting other ppl in danger without their knowledge (today they spread the virus beyond the Minyan)

Re: Corona virus and your shul
Every one should seek their own halachik guidance from their posek. Even in Lakewood their are some that differ in pesak.

Imagine someone would force you to listen to their rabbi or church leader.

Why is it so hard for some to live with the fact that others will make decisions in life [even life threatening] that you don't necessarily agree with.
The guy had ppl in his front yard coming. He can at least have a say on his property...

Re: Halachik Status of Illegitimate Minyanim
Lakewood Psak was NOT because of safety. It clearly states because of איבה.

Why do we read stories of people who sacrificed their lives not to eat horse meat in the Holocaust. We call them heroes. Nobody says ahhh but וחי בהם......

Follow your Rabbi and stop knocking other rabonim period. We will never have the geula with all this hate.
It was already explained before the difference; שעת השמד

There are videos going around, ppl are buying from him meals for soldiers to give him some business but he used to give for free for IDF so it's a big pain for him too.
In one video you can see a full parking lot with ppl coming to buy a falafel (with social distancing), that's what he really aimed to.

Re: Vaccine Discussion Master Thread I don't want to go into the whole discussion of vaccines but if I can change the mind of one person/family then it's worth it:
My young brother wasn't vaccinated for the measles and he got it when he was a young baby. He was then completely healthy until the age of 9 when we realized something was wrong. After many tests, scans & MRI, the doctor found that it was a rare complication of the measles that comes out only years later and no one till that day recovered from it. The body just stop functioning in many stages and people were able to stay alive for a maximum of 8 years with an average of 4 years. This happens 1 in 10M measles cases.
I don't remember all the details, the name of this complication, and why my brother wasn't vaccinated for the measles (although we were all vaccinated in my family), and I don't want to ask my parents any questions about it.
Someone called me a few months ago after there was a big controversy in CH about vaccines and ask me; "is it true your brother had complications because he got vaccinated?" I was shocked from this question but I still had to verify to be 100% sure. My only question to my mother was if my brother was vaccinated or not and she confirmed he wasn't.
My brother past away 3 years later at the age of 12. It was 3 painful years with a hospital bed at home with many machines and a surgery or visit at the hospital every few months.
If he just had the damn vaccine...

Re: Master List Of Unofficial Chabad Houses Rabbi Lazar, chief Rabbi of Russia took yesterday the initiative to bring Achdout in Chabad following the passing of the Shliach Binyomin Wolff in Germany.
Just a few hours ago Rabbi Bentolila, the head Shliach of Central Africa, decided to make the 2 unofficial Shluchim in Central Africa, official. This is Rabbi Notik from Kenya and Rabby Chaviv from Ethiopia.
For all the Chabad Chsidim in this forum, please say L'chaim! Let's hope that this bring us closer to Moshiach.
See the Whatsapp screenshot attached.
(I spent myself more than 6 months in Central Africa and this is a huge deal, Shluchim are really trying to bring more people together and hopefully, this will encourage others to do the same).
