Re: Is there a second wave?
C. Yes, it would be interesting to see if large outdoor gatherings can spread the virus, but the riots and protests are not necessarily helpful in answering that question.  Unlike most gatherings, the protesters often didn't know each other or record each others' names, so impossible to know who was near whom.

how about public announcement: if you were at X protest on Y day at Z time, get yourself tested

Re: Violent protests erupt across the country
The problem is in this country we are governed by laws not a religion. So for this discussion any religion is completely meaningless.
nobody advocated governing by anything other than the law of the land. when my local cop starts enforcing halacha, meet me in supreme court.
that's the law by which the police govern, not what defines moral right and wrong.

Re: yeshivas that are open
How long should we wait until some here are convinced that our community is safe?
The argument made by those better equipped is that high percentage of antibodies /assumed immunity combined with no new sources of infection.

What happens later this week, when 10s (or more) susceptible out of towners with your attitude decide it's OK to ignore the plea of rabbonim and doctors not to visit? Do we risk introducing new infection source to the remaining susceptible population?
Just in time for 770s superspread grand reopening

Re: yeshivas that are open And I'm serious about the attitude. I get that masks are more uncomfortable for @ExGingi than for the rest of us (or is the discomfort in needing to cede some self assurance)
But why does my mask bother you? (not you, the next guy)
Why was I heckled out of a farbrenen yesterday for wearing one?
That's the attitude I'm afraid will start the new wave

Re: yeshivas that are open
Yes, people wearing masks are the exception rather than the rule in the community. I would guess most get asked in surprise if they didn't have any symptoms. But their own mask wearing is respected, as well as more mask compliance around if indeed a person that hasn't had symptoms is present.
That was 2 weeks ago for me.
I'm no grasshopper, but let's forget the silent stuff. Let's stick with the 3 comments in as many minutes that were unambiguous.
Yes your generation are more respectful. Your kids generation, in the other hand, are more self assured than you, and more black and white (and all they hear from their parents is "אוי ס'איז שווער צו זיין א איד מציל נפשות")

Re: Out Of Control Fireworks
You need to stop it at the source.
the source is in gracie mansion.
with all due sympathy for those who can't sleep, the main problem here is lawlessness. when the city chief executive at whose pleasure the heroes in blue serve has ordered LE to 'stand down', the message to criminals/lowlifes/vilde chayos etc. 'go have a blast, do whatever you please' לית דין ולית דיין. the danger in that goes a lot further than a few sleepless nights.
how many black lives were snuffed out in one night last night by gun violence racist police absence? 20 shooting deaths in one day across the city? how many were 'black or brown bodies'? do their lives matter? and how safe are we?
that must be "the source" that @CountValentine is looking for

on that note
Where are they getting all the fireworks?
if anyone knows the answer to this, I know some bored teens with no summer camp who would love some fun at 2 in the afternoon instead of 2 in the morning. can we hook them up?

once social distancing is kept.
a big assumption in our communities...

I've been called "the only guy in ch still wearing one" (or heckled, as discussed) for wearing in crowded indoor settings

Have you seen 770 lately? A wedding? A grocery store?

Re: Long Term Effects of COVID-19
Forgot to mention another good reason (though it's highly doubtful, as if I understand correctly reinfections are asymptomatic): During my bout with COVID-19 I managed to shed about 20lbs of bodyweight (and regained about 5 since). Dropping another 15lbs will get me even closer to my target weight.
I'm not sure where you get that reinfections are asymptomatic

Re: Do you know someone who has had Coronavirus after Pesach?
I guess you avoided 770 on Shabbos.
do you wonder why?
unlike you, I wasn't hit in round 1, and -also unlike you- I have no interest in getting hit in round 2.
with out-of-towners (from hotspots) outnumbering masks 10-1 i figured I didn't belong. (even if this week I finally wouldn't get heckled for my mask, as I might have the excuse of taking the notices at face value)
Quote
I would say that about 1% of people wore masks.
wow, that's a real uptick
Quote

I have a friend who initially panicked about being forced to wear a mask, as per the notice put out by the Gaboim/Kratz, but when I explained to him that those notices can only be used to wipe one's hands, not other places, as they can cause rectal bleeding, his panic subsided. Not a word printed on those notices was meant seriously even for a split second by those who published them.
that's a very respectful way for you to describe a psak from our beloved local rabbonim. I'm having flashbacks to the late nun's, the way some lefty neighbors used to talk...

Re: The science of COVID-19
I can't figure out why you insist on using lockdowns interchangeably with "Using a mask and being cautious" when you are well aware this is not the case. I have come to expect much more intellectual honesty from you than this, but that seems to have disappeared as soon as the discussion is about covid.
in my experience, the loudest protestations against masks and precautions, especially protesting mocking being concerned for the discomfort of those who do maintain those protections, usually comes from the people who are themselves feeling the most guilty about their own lack of precaution. the guy heckling your mask is th guy who himself didn't get it yet either

(or maybe he did, but he's well informed, on the cutting edge of DDF, and has started worrying about reinfection)

Re: How can you spot a Trump supporter?
And so is all our livelihoods, our sanity, and health not pertaining to Covid.
Has the effectiveness of a mask ever been proven?  Heck, even anecdotal evidence supporting it is lacking. If we're way ahead of peak capacity, or way behind, why slow this nightmare?  Speed it the hell up.
lockdowns, not masks, affect your livelihood and those other things.
You're drawing a false equivalence or a straw man to justify your laziness.

Re: How can you spot a Trump supporter?
Tell that to people who have mental health challanges. I know people who have gone into serious depression over the lockdown. They get triggered over seeing someone with a mask.
Don't assume I'm talking about your "uneducated trumpers." I'm talking about people with real mental issues.
what's the connection between the two?

As I said
I'm not expecting anyone to compare that simchas Torah with the current situation. What I am asking is to take one's current knowledge, attitudes and feelings and imagine themselves back then and there, and try to be honest as to what they would hold/feel/do back then.
one good way to measure;
When each person's own local rabbonim, rebbes and leaders did give guidance, did they accept them with simplicity? Or start calculating כוונה פנימית, that The rabbi really meant otherwise "if he meant what he said then he would..." (this being the actual example in the reshima)
Likewise, arguments in the basis of global economy, as well as personal comfort, logical and accurate as they may be, are products of sechel and of self, not of emunah peshuta

With people who have the training to equippe them to understand what they're seeing, (and the combined expertise of multiple people) and they then also did a thorough collection of the available local data (not just the anecdotes they happen to bump into), it's the best data we're gonna get, especially regarding the actual location they're monitoring

I thought that they recently decided that it was most likely an anomaly.
there were potential cases a month ago, which by a week ago seemed to be assumed an anomaly.
This week has a new outbreak, with more such cases and 'better documentation' that it is indeed reinfection, they're now questioning the assumption of it being an anomaly.
Essentially updating the guidance to be more wary even if previously infected

Re: Crown Heights as a COVID-19 lab
There comes a certain point where common sense needs to be used, regardless of emotional reactions to the hypocrisy and senselessness of politicians. Right now we're talking about ignoring guidance from the doctors we actually do trust. That doesn't make much sense to me.

Stam interesting, the rovs father in law is walking around in 770 with no mask
Nunu
dunno that he takes orders from anyone... or that he can be kept from 770 for any length of time (mor than @ExGingi if you can imagine that)...
Stam,

The rov said to listen to the doctors, besides dr rosen and the gedalia society there are other doctors in ch and at least one of them has said that makes don't help
If I don't wear a mask I'm still following the rov bc I'm listening to a dr

What makes dr rosen and the gedalia society expert dr in corona virus? That's not there field
Dr rosen is a pediatrician and the person who is in charge of the gedalia society I believe is either a radiologist or anesthesiologist
Just like in other fields, for example law I don't go to a divorce lawyer for bankruptcy, so too by Corona it should work like that
אה"נ
as others here have said 'follow your rov', similarly here, follow your own רופא ידיד.
the benefit that he/they have is possibly:
*larger number of patients so bigger data pool
*the benefit of multiple people/professionals able to pool their energy and expertise on the topic
*they seem to be collecting data in coordination with hatzalah as well as the other local practices

and possibly העיקר
they're actually making statements on record.giving guidance beyond their own patients. so for public 'leadership' it's kinda the only voice there is
