Re: Hotel Compensation Master Thread
Im trying to figure out if and how i should ask for compensation. i stayed in a residence in by marriott in albany for four nights on points. On my request we were upgraded to a two bedroom suite. But when we got there, the beds were not made and we had to call the front desk to have it made. But the bigger issue was that they gave us a broken pack-n-play (even the hotel staff couldn't open it) and they only found another one (my baby was going crazy because it was way past her bedtime) once I bought a new one from walmart and asked them to reimburse me. the rest of the stay was very pleasant.

Yes I would call or email and state exactly what happened and politely ask for some sort of compensation.

Re: Hotel Compensation Master Thread
no, once i brought the new pack n play to the desk, the receptionist went to the storage room and found another one. he told me to return the new one to walmart the next day, which i did.

So I would try pushing for a higher compensation especially since you had to go through this hassle of buying and returning...  I don't think they will claw back the 5k already given so you have nothing to lose by asking for more.  Worst case they deny it.

Re: Qantas 20% bonus for transfers from Amex
Nothing will post until after the targeted transfer bonus period is over. There is no way to know if it will stack until after.

Last time it posted within the transfer bonus period. The transfer bonus period has nothing to do with it.

I think it's safe to assume that this time there is only the bonus originating from Amex. Qantas is not adding another 20% on top of that.

My theory is that last time they were a new Amex transfer partner and were unaware at first that the bonus was given by Amex already so they did it in their end too. And then even after they did find out they just gave it to everyone to avoid a customer service fiasco. This time they already know the points are being transferred with 20% already added so they're not adding anything else on top of that which is totally in their right.

Re: Tischler Made It
Does anyone notice that this cover doesnt have one mention of anything Jewish or frum? Not one.

Does this bother anyone else or is it just me?

I'm no fan of Ami, but last I checked Yeshivos in Israel are Jewish. And usually frum too. Rabbi Shaus Taub is definitely both. So there is something there, albeit nowhere close to what I would expect from a Jewish publication.

Re: Tischler Made It
Rabbi Shais Taub-- the only jewish thing there is the name... the title of the article could easily be non jewish "responds to a mother who's heart is broken"

Yeshivos in israel could be conservative.

Still nothing Frum. Try again.

You said nothing JEWISH (or Frum). So I pointed these out.

Rabbi Taub is Jewish and frum, I know him.

Conservative is still Jewish. And like I said, yeshivos are usually frum - you can take a survey/census and find that most are.

Again, I don't buy or read Ami, nor will I buy this one, nor am I here to defend them. So I rest my case. We can get back on topic  :).

Re: Will there be Sleep Away Camp this summer?
Word on the street is that satmar was told that if they open the directors will be arrested for child endangerment.

So if they open in NY its child endangerment but if they open next door in PA its not???

It's a ludicrous claim.

Re: Will there be Sleep Away Camp this summer?
Which one is wrong, NY or PA?

Its wrong that the same act (which people are considering quite severe) can can get you arrested in one state but not in another. And yes I know states are allowed different laws and will not go into that argument. In this case, NY governor is acting dictatorial and not at all in the best interests of his constituents.

Actually, opening a camp without permits is child endangerment in both states.

That may be so, but all camps in PA have permits to my knowledge. So nobody is going to get arrested there for child endangerment because they're operating a camp.

Obviously its obnoxious that NY chose not to issue them and then may arrest people based on that.

Re: Will there be Sleep Away Camp this summer?
What has happened is that we are a bunch of spoiled overgrown teenagers who think that if we dont get exactly what we want it's the greatest churban in the history of Klal Yisroel, and we can do what ever we want to get what we want.
We don't run our lives by asking "what does the torah want from me now?" rather "How I find a loophole to allow what I want?"
We dont trust those that know better than us. Rabbanim, Poskim, Doctors, Scientists, Economists, Accountants... If they dont allow me to do what I want, they "dont know what they're talking about" "Its an educated guess" "they get paid off" "There's a Bashefer" "they dont understand" "I think differently" "

Wrong.

Talk for yourself.

We sure do trust all of the above and more. Rabbanim and Asksnim were and are completely involved in the effort to open camps because they deemed it important. They are in consultation with doctors and medical experts to run those camps according to the highest standards possible from that perspective.

Do you see our community rioting, looting, shooting, burning, and what-not over this ban??? We are absolutely NOT doing whatever we want to get what we want.

The governor here has become a dictator. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Re: Will there be Sleep Away Camp this summer?
I'm neither pro nor con, just trying to understand both sides.
I do understand the medical and scientific arguments to close sleepaway camps.
I don't understand the argument that the only two options are sleepaway camps and roaming the streets.

78 - Number of years frum children have been able to attend Camp Agudah and other sleepaway camps
3255 - Number of years since Matan Torah that frum children have NOT had that option

It's clearly not a religious requirement.  And Cuomo, who grew up with orthodox Jewish neighbors is aware of that.

If children, parents, and teachers today cannot imagine a summer without sleepaway camp, that seems to be a failure of the imagination.  Perhaps the more creative people out there can help them work out other options.

Give us the numbers of since when Jewish girls are attending schools which began with the advent of Bais Yakov by Sara Schneirer about 100 years ago or so. Maybe we should imagine our girls stopping to go to school because it's not necessary since they didn't have the option to attend schools for thousands of years prior to that?

And you can take it to the next level as well - how long is there a law on the books making it mandatory for a child up to age 16 to attend school? Maybe it should be nullified and we should imagine a world where ALL children (not just Jewish) age 12 and up can do as they please. Years back these children were needed to help on the farms. Well times change.

Just like we no longer need our kids to tend to the cows and chickens and thus school becomes part of our life, the same is for camp. It's part of life nowadays. Saying we should go back to living like in the early 1900s or prior is a non-starter.

I'm not saying camp is a religious requirement or a life and death matter, but a parent should have an option to send their child if they choose to do so. Coming out with a hard and strong ban was and is uncalled for. There is not a single other state that is going to such lengths to make sure camp doesn't happen by hook or by crook. It's just downright wrong to do this to people.

There is no medical or scientific reasoning to shut camps, that all fell away with the mass protests of thousands of people. And all the health protocols that camps promised to abide by have already been discussed here ad nauseam.

Re: Will there be Sleep Away Camp this summer?
Of course they are not infallible. There is pattern of complaining. In thread after thread.
Every thread was crying and whining the shuls were closed. Now we moved on to camps. What is next mikvahs?

Its basically one and the same. It's about the double standard being applied by allowing the protests during a health crisis but continuing to be heavy handed in other areas.

Re: Will there be Sleep Away Camp this summer?
Why is this relevant 2-3 months later, in a different country, to a completely different question? Each of these 3 alone are enough to make your argument moot. This kind of rhetoric against any rav who isn't your rav and/or disagrees with your rav is despicable and has no place in Klal Yisroel. Any rav who "errs on the side of caution" because he doesn't want to take achrayus if something goes wrong, without regard for the repercussions of erring on the side of caution, shouldn't be answering such shailos (or any shailos).

And I agree with most of what you write especially here in support of camp ;D.  You hit the nail on the head on this one. Why are we stuck on what was going on a few months ago when the reality now is completely different?

These people who are so busy defending this ban on camps for sure did not have businesses that were forced to be shut for months nor do they have large families with children out of school for months as well. For those of us that do, that, coupled with a total different reality than that of a few months ago, puts us in a completely different frame of thought.

Come next Tuesday after the hearing will be like Color War here. If the TRO is denied I can see those supporting the ban cheering loudly and vice vs if the TRO is granted (myself among those 8))

Just got a copy of some forms a parent is being asked to sign to send their kid to camp in NY. One of the forms is to legally sign over guardianship to the camp.

What are the legal/tax/other ramifications of this?

Just curious, how old are the kids that they would be signing over for?

Wonder if the final answer for the poll  will end up being a fourth option: Yes first half (those whoíve already gone up) but no second (if theyíre shut down chĒv)

You would need to add "in NY" to the poll because out of state camps are operating legally and don't run the risk of being shut down (hopefully).

Re: JetBlue Kicks Frum Family Off Plane For 2 Year Old Not Wearing A Mask
Why? If they hold not wearing a mask is dangerous than even a 2 day old should have to wear one.
If you canít comply then donít fly
they should raise it bc you think thats a good age? and if the rule was age 4 and you didnt agree with that you'd say age 6 is reasonable right?
this argument is so classic and comes in endless forms: they make rules, people break them, then complain that the rulesmakers are wrong

No, not because its a "good age", but because its rational. Ask anyone who was ever a parent if you can reason with a 2 year old.

When they're 4 or 5 you can reason with them. Not that I think a 4 or 5 year old does need a mask (see @Lurker 's comment a few posts above), but at least you can get them to wear it.  This has been repeatedly explained to people who I'm assuming were never parents but somehow they think if a rule was decided on by someone in power then its set in stone even if its completely irrational.

I strongly disagree with the policy. If it's dangerous for a two yr old then it's dangerous for an infant as well. Two make the mandate apply specifically at an age known as "terrible" (twos), seems pathetically ridiculous.
That said, basics in conflict resolution is to de-escalate. Explaining to the person in control why they're wrong and your right is the exact opposite.
My two yr old would never keep a mask on for 30 seconds let alone a whole flight, but I wouldn't argue with the FA. I would apologize and stick it on his face knowing full well that he's going to rip it off in a minute. I would do that every time it was requested.
I would also try and shield him from view of the aisle by sitting him in the window seat and trying to entertain him facing the window.

Well said!

Re: Deblasio Shutting 9 ZIP Codes Again
Thatís idiotic. COVID doesnít cause death or serious illness in the great majority of people it infects, but it does in an unacceptably high number of cases. In no way does that make it like strep or ear infections.

Once more, for those that still donít get it: In the vast majority of cases, COVID will cause mild illnesses (with unknown long term side effects). In an unacceptably high percentage, it will cause serious illness and death. And the same infection that causes the mild effects in one individual will cause the death of another, more vulnerable individual. The two are not separable.

So your answer to that is to close the schools??

I'm sure that will totally solve the problem and we will stop seeing the serious illnesses and deaths caused to some.

From your mouth to G-d's ears.

And just to be clear: Even 1 death is 1 too many.

Re: Deblasio Shutting 9 ZIP Codes Again
Plenty of OOT Jewish communities do just that and have avoided COVID-19 outbreaks and shutdowns.

That may be true, but none of them are as condensed as these neighborhoods currently being targeted so its not really a good comparison. But I'm honestly and sincerely glad for every place that's able to avoid a spike or outbreak and I wish that were able to be the case all over.

In either case, that wasn't really my point at all.  My point is that a lot of us are pretty sick of all these people on here that act like they receive direct revelations from G-d just like Moses did.

Many of us have and still are trying our best and despite it all even if we should have seen it coming are still disappointed and we're not interested in being told, I told you so. That's for kindergarten.

Umm. But this happened. As predicted. And the places that practiced SD arenít experiencing spikes (yet). This non-argument is mind-numbingly senseless.

It wasn't an argument, so yes its a non-argument just as you wrote. And its also not mind-numbingly senseless. You totally missed my point which I explained above.

What is mind-numbingly senseless is your extreme rudeness to anyone that disagrees with you - not just to me.. You can say the same things politely, but perhaps its too much of an effort for you? Or perhaps I should be used to it by now? Unfortunately, for you, rudeness just isn't something I can get used to. Sorry.

Re: OSM (Our Shuls Matter) Protests
Even if the "mosrim" were completely in the wrong Halachically, mob violence is completely unacceptable. Full stop.

It shouldn't take a lamdan to realize how this is wrong in many levels.

100% agree that attacking them is/was/will always be wrong on all fronts.

However, that doesn't make what these 2 guys were doing morally or ethically right - and I'll say it the opposite way than you did: even if by the letter of the law (meaning halachah) they are not violating anything it doesn't mean it was the right and correct thing to do. And if I may humbly add, they don't deserve to be defended. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

I don't know enough about them having only recently discovered their existence but it seems to me that they've been raising the ire of certain communities way before COVID came around and with very not pure and holy intentions. So those that are saying that now with their COVID reportings they were doing it solely in the name of saving lives, I'm sorry but I'm having a very hard time believing that all of a sudden these guys became purely altruistic.

Just my personal observations.

By now the vast majority has been complying with mask wearing for a couple of weeks already.

Revisionist history. BS. Never happened. Things were fully closed for less than a month.

Re: Czar Cuomo
Not even at first, it took a good couple of weeks. And there were pockets of non-compliance throughout. So the guy said never when he should have said 90% of the time? This is the hill we want to die on? His point stands: the rules were barely followed at all over the last 7 months. That doesn't justify what's happening now, but let's not pretend we've been a model of good behavior.

Even if we were not a model of good behavior, I know hundreds of families who did not attend minyan or send their kids to school and went out ONLY to buy groceries immediately from the start for at least 2 full months. Sorry, that's not just "barely following".

Re: Czar Cuomo
They weren't closed Purim. Most schools closed a week later, and minyan factories were still fully operational for another week after that. After Pesach, shuls started up again and schools tried opening under the radar and/or in private houses. By mid-Iyar, Covid was officially cancelled.

Not on Purim, but right after. And a week is shortly thereafter and exactly when it was ordered by government.

Schools opening under the radar didn't happen until Shavuous time.

If u live in a bubble where no one around you  listens to rules, its ur problem, but that doesn't mean no one Ultra Orthodox is not and never did listen.

99% of shuls and schools were closed for a long  time, FACT.

Re: Czar Cuomo
You started a thread on April 12 about shuls being open in secret. Come on...

Like @Yehuda57 mentioned, perhaps "some" shuls opened underground. In that place there were hundreds if not thousands that remained shuttered. And even if some opened secretly their attendance was nowhere near what it was usual. Most ppl were still davening biyechidus.

But definitely NOT schools until much later.

October 17, 2020, 10:44:09 PM

Re: Czar Cuomo
it didn't seem like it was just "some" if you're talking about BP/Wili a month after shutdown.

It actually just was "some" based on percentages of shuls in these neighborhoods. And like I said schools were completely shut for even longer.

And even if it was closed for just a month (which it wasn't) doesn't give Cuomo permission to say we NEVER followed the rules.  That 1 month nixes that argument.

Thirdly, this isn't an accusation - when Hatzolah did that concert it normalized the behavior that was starting to percolate in the community. Didn't realize this was debatable.

Hatzalah, which is totally non political, did that concert to raise funds. They were on the front lines and saved many many lives, the death toll could have been much higher ch"v without them.

It's totally uncalled for to tarnish the reputation of an organization (that selflessly assists a huge number of people annually) by saying their concert condoned large weddings. I personally didn't see any of what you mentioned happened at the concert at all and I didn't get the impression that this meant Hatzalah was giving the ok for large weddings.

Unless you were here or somehow else have first hand knowledge of the majority of shuls in Brooklyn, Monsey, and Monroe which I do. This isn't about assumptions, its about the facts on the ground. Saying that many, many shuls in those areas made changes is incorrect. Unfortunately most there didn't.

Re: Corona spike after Yom Tov
When you say first hand knowledge, that means you were there yourself. Were you at the majority of the shuls in Brooklyn, Monroe, and Monsey? Or did you hear about it from people who were there? Because if you heard about it from other people, your info is as good as mine or anyone else's, regardless of where they live.

Of course I was not in the majority of shuls in all those areas and I wrote that in my post - "all of which I saw first hand or heard first hand accounts". This is what I meant when I said first hand knowledge.

Living here and having shuls on every block I did see with my own eyes first hand plenty of them. The rest I heard first hand from close family or friends living there and they obviously have no reason to lie. I'm just saying that since you don't live here to witness the entire picture first hand and are just going by accounts of things you heard, its just not the same as living it.

And if anyone that lives in Brooklyn or Monsey or Monroe wants to come here and refute what I saw and tell me that they did see the majority of shuls there implement changes, I'm totally open to that. Somehow I doubt that will happen.
