Re: Is It Ethical? Alternative take: if the store wishes to restrict certain discounts to specific people or groups, it's the store's responsibility to verify the intended users are using it before giving the customer the product. Not verifying authentic use can be seen as sanctioning the transaction.

Re: Is It Ethical?
How do you know what the restrictions are for the manipulated code if you've created it yourself? Maybe Save10 is open to the public and Save90 is for employees only?

The cynic in me says if a store's employee discount code is SAVE90, they deserve what they get. Don't leave your store untended.

Re: Is It Ethical?
If you go to a store at 3am and find the handle unlocked what can you take?

What difference does it make if it's 3 am or 3 pm? If the store is open, buy what you want  :P

It wasn't a great analogy. The point is, discovering something is on sale is not the same as breaking in. Is the sale for you? Don't know. If there's no sign that says it isn't and they don't stop you from buying, why should you assume it isn't?

Re: New NYC Bill: Add $3 Surcharge To Each Package Delivery To... Bail Out The MTA
What would make it too late?

I don't know if "too late" is the right term, as it will never be impossible to move, but maybe "too difficult" is better. Like this:

Selling assets there when they are worth very little.

Re: The Pfizer Vaccine and do people who had COVID already need the vaccine?
According to current data one dose is 82% effective and two doses are 95%.

At 82%, I'd be skipping the second dose and doubling the number of people getting vaccinated. But what do I know...

Re: The Pfizer Vaccine and do people who had COVID already need the vaccine?
OTOH, at some point you would want to go back and boost the immunity of healthcare workers and high risk people. If at that time you need another 2 doses it would be less efficient to do it that way.

IMO, it's not about long term efficiency. It's about shutting this thing down as quickly as possible, and then dealing with producing more as needed. The second dose isn't needed for at least 3 months. If we can double that timeframe to 6 months and double the amount of people who get vaccinated by summer, I think that completely changes the game, even if we have give people 2 more doses.

Re: Masks
Wearing a mask around maskless people should at most only slightly prevent COVID if you're not also wearing eye protection. Though wearing a mask will decrease the viral load/severity of disease. Not sure why this is never mentioned.

It has been. Along with the whole "masks protect others from you more than they protect you from others" shpeil. It boggles my mind how no one ever expresses shock when someone is injured in a car accident while wearing a seat belt and driving carefully.

Re: Crown Heights as a COVID-19 lab
That's pretty bad. Take it at face value and then decide not to follow or follow partially.

I'd rather say that I choose to follow (though not always what is written, sometimes it's the whisper directive or the one based on action or inaction).

The point is, anyone who is still blaming government or mixed messages as their reason for not wearing a mask is either an idiot or they are lying to you.

Re: When will the current wave peak in the US?
7 day avg is between 1100-1200 depending on today's final numbers. It is increasing steadily, and deaths lag 3-4 weeks behind cases. We'll probably hit 350k by Jan 1, and 500k sometime before Valentine's Day. I don't think we'll see 300k cases/day, though. I think we top out at around 250k for a couple of weeks in the beginning/mid Dec, with numbers starting to come down before the 25th.
We haven't peaked yet, but I think we'll peak a little before Xmas. I think we'll top out at a week or two of 250k cases a day. The deaths and hospitalizations will unfortunately take more time to peak, with death counts only starting to go back down in mid Feb.

Pretty close on the cases, other than the 2 week post-Xmas hiccup. Deaths are spot on, so far. Yay me.

Or using emunah as an excuse for less precautions, even if it's not real.

IME, the great miracle of Covid is the unprecedented emunah. Unfortunately, it's usually limited to Covid-related issues.

Re: Pregnancy and Covid
R' Reuven Feinstein wrote about having bitachon in regards to parnassah. He says it's easy for the guy who has millions of dollars in the bank to say I trust God will take care of me. It's also easy for the broke person to say I trust God will take care of me, he has no other option. The true ba'al bitachon is the person who lives paycheck to paycheck and still puts his faith in God. I think most people you're referring to fall into the second category.

Actually, I'm referring to people on all ends of the spectrum, and not only with regards to parnassah. However, the vort is very fitting, as many feel (somewhat erroneously) as helpless to control their situation with regards to Covid as a broke person. But the original point was Emunah is a convenient cover for apathy.

Re: The current state of COVID-19 in Israel I'm very much pro-vax, but I understand @Chayal's position. I'm personally very leery of the Covid vaccines, but I'm also predisposed to skepticism and distrust of new things. That said, there is a special place in hell for people who put out misinformation about the vaccines causing people not to get vaccinated.

Push comes to shove, I'll probably get vaccinated, but only because I realized that if C"V something bad comes from the vaccines, I'll be left in a world full of anti-vaxxers. I'd rather roll the dice with Pfizer.

But the goal-post movers/deniers will just tell you:
  • It's too late now
  • And/or we already hit the peak or will soon

  • We're all going to get it anyway
  • Who cares? The survival rate is 99.99% unless you're over 90 or have AIDS
  • That's just because there's more unnecessary testing of asymptomatic babies
  • Amazing news!! Now we have heard immunity!

Re: The current state of COVID-19 in Israel
I see it much less likely for mRNA to have long term effects than vaccines like the Johnson vaccine. Don't see any potential unknown side effect being worse than Covid-19's effects.

Again, there's reason for optimism, but to say mRNA will be the safest vaccines we've ever designed, this early in the game, is jumping the gun, IMO.

I hadn't been following the argument, just was agreeing with the sentiment that post.

I agree with the sentiment, too. It's great. What those precautions are and how much you're willing to sacrifice in order to keep your grandparents in your life... that's where things get dicey. Wearing a crappy mask around your chin while eating a snack in Bubby's kitchen after having danced at a different chasuna every day that week isn't doing Bubby any favors.

Re: Lakewood covid cases
What does that mean?

It means that we change how we live when we have kids because they become our priority. During a pandemic, if having our elderly and higher risk family members in our lives is important to us (as it should be), other things need to be sacrificed. We can't do whatever we want and then put our elderly at risk because we don't want them to be lonely.

Re: BitCoin Master Thread So this by no means is a "tip" and I am not even 1/1000th of an expert. This is simply to put something on your radar, if you play with altcoins. DYOR!

I believe XLM has been held artificially low over the past week while hundreds of other coins have popped. There have been a number of very large purchases made (millions of lumens each) over the last few days. I personally am long on XLM, but I think there may be a short term opportunity, as well.

I debated posting this, as this is pure speculation and I am no expert. But I would feel bad if I noticed something and didn't say anything. Again, DYOR and take this with a Dead Sea's worth of salt.

How often do medical staff in COVID wards test? They probably all already have COVID and/or vaccination in any case.

I'm not sure, but IIRC it was pretty regularly. And those are people who have full PPE and are trained in proper PPE use.

Re: Tweets, Pictures, And Videos That Are Coronavirus Related
True, and the same way we cant comprehend horrifics like the holocaust or people who were abused RL. However, there is a big difference between assuming something with certainty  about a specific person, and a statistical likelihood that more x people are n than y people are n, which would accurately change the probability of any individual person being n.

Struggles and suffering are subjective. You cannot infer anything from what a person has or where they are or what the people around them claim to be experiencing.

I'm a little bit concerned seeing this huge rebbisha chair sits there already, so importantly even when there's still a boiler tank next to it, what the real intention of this initiative is.

Everyone is going to have their own motivations for moving down and making the community work. As long as no one else's goals are in conflict with your own, there's no problem. It's good to know what you're getting into, though.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread Just some random thoughts:
  • New daily cases haven't been this low since Nov 8 and are steadily dropping, as expected. Hospitalizations are also down almost 40% from the peak on Jan 8, so hopefully we'll see a drop in death counts starting within the next week or 2. The cases never fully disappear between waves, but I think it's safe to say that the worst of the second wave is over.
  • Historically, first waves of pandemics hit with a decent size bump, then the second waves hit like a tsunami, followed by a small third wave (smaller than the first). My personal opinion is that the third wave this time will be closer to the second wave, as opposed to the hiccup it has historically been. Never before have variants been able to travel intercontinentally like they do today. Already, the UK variant is doubling every 10 days in the US. It is estimated to be 35-40% more contagious than the strains we've seen here until now. It is also possible that treatment protocols may need to be tweaked to deal with the variants, as evidenced by South Africa suspending use of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine after finding it to be almost ineffective against their current strain.
  • I'm curious to see the impact of an unprecedented third wave on the economy and the markets. The third wave looks to be timed to start after this $1.9T package is passed. Additionally, the US's vaccine rollout has been dismal at best, and there will be legitimate questions about the efficacy of the current vaccines and treatments against the newer strains. While the markets rebounded during the first wave and stayed strong during the second wave based on confidence in treatments/vaccines and in the stimulus infusion, there may be less confidence in those things this time around. Volatile markets probably won't help things, especially with Joe the Plumber's money tied up in GME and Dogecoin. I think the third wave may be the pin that pops the bubble.
