Re: Defunding police is the answer to racism?
It's a good point, but I think there is a legitimate answer. (Perhaps not the true answer, but a real answer in any event.)

Look at where 3,000+ years of persecution has left us? We are accepted here, have full opportunity, and can achieve any goal we wish to.

Look where 400+ years has left them? Subject to racial inequality, statistically overwhelmingly poor and unprivileged.
if accepted includes being the subject of knockout games, swastikas painted on our doors, and cat calls of go home, or Hitler should have finished, then yes, we've made it in life. Full integration.

As the saying goes:

"Ladies, if a man says he will fix it, he will.
There is no need to remind him every 6 months about it."
iirc, Handyman Moshe in Brooklyn had a tagline that said ' if your husband says "I'll fix it tomorrow", call me today'

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
They are not required to mask. You going to pretend they are safe?
no idea. As one epidemiologist put it to me, "we're all part of the world's biggest science experiment".
Since wearing a mask is at best a small discomfort that everyone can get used to fairly quickly, I'm big proponent of enforcing masks since experts tell that that has the best potential for stopping the spread.
I personally still wear a mask. My rational is similar to my rational for wearing a seatbelt. Although a seatbelt hasn't saved my life or prevented injury in 33 years, I still wear it because it's at best a tiny, tiny discomfort which has the potential to save my life. (Seatbelts actually have a longer history of saving lives than masks do)
When asked by someone in Lakewood why I'm wearing a mask, I responded , if I'm wrong, I've gone through minor discomfort and look a bit strange. If your wrong then people will start dying. "

Re: The Day After
My 2 cents:

Anyone who had a real business, which had solid fundamentals and was run 100% kosher, will be fine. He got a PPP, got/will get an EIDL, and will get Main Street lending. If he laid off employees, they got basically full income and are ready to come back end of July at the latest.

Interest rates are low, anyone in resi or multifam Real Estate will be fine, his property will only be more valuable now.

Nursing homes were handed very large grants and will have a lot more gov funding after this as well, to make up for higher payroll and less patients. Actually, this crises may have saved the industry.

All medical will do very well.

Retail sucked since early 2010's, don't blame covid. Jewish (specialized) retail is already back to full boom in the tri-state.

Simchas will not change (except only in the very very short term).

Anyone in Amazon, well - thats what happens when you get into someone else business, Bezos calls the shots. It's a risk that is unrelated to Covid. And now online sales will pick up so hang in there, 2021 will be a homer.

And any guys who worked for cash "schwartz" or stam churn here and there: Get a normal job and do things right, because when things go south the gov will now take care.

Proof all the this true - the markets.
your wrong. Depends on the business.
Take a successful caterer. The real money to be made is on big events. Fundraisers, large weddings, corporate events , etc. If a caterers business revolved around such events, those events are over in my locale through mid 2021 at least.
You can't stay afloat that long with reimagining the whole business concept and turning into a takeout store.
Just one example...
Of course you can reinvent your business model but that's hardly called "your business surviving" that's opening a new business.

Cool, thanks. Is that something that can be used in a small residential kitchen? And does it need to be installed permanently or do you put it in as needed?
needs to be installed. Alternatively, if you have two windows opposite each other, you can put a box fan or window fan in the window closest to the stove and it should work the same

Re: Is the need to feel safe white privilege?
If someone experiences anti-Semitism does that mean they understand what a black person goes through with racism? The same questions goes with the situations reversed.
nope
But this conversation is really pointless.
Of course going experiences allow to us to have a unique I understanding of a situation that others don't have, but that doesn't preclude those same people from empathizing with the suffering individual or community.
A therapist is not required to allow themselves to suffer a specific tragedy in order to help individuals through said tragedies.  Part of empathy is acknowledging that you cannot truly understand the suffering (even if you had a similar experience since no individuals are alike) while at the same time using the tos at our disposal to mitigate further suffering

Right seat BOS-LEB $56 RT no one else on board

Cape Air gate 27 at BOS C

My ride... Nantucket Airways 402c N88833

Opening the hatch for me

the best/worst seat (after the front right seat)...
Plane consists of 4 rows 1,1
The seats next to the hatch obviously cannot not be at the window, so the 2 seats are next to each other. If the plane is full, it's the worst seat. Otherwise it has the most room and these seats are considerably smaller than standard seats and don't have armrests.

Probably not.

Are the stores open on Shabbos?

While I'm not commenting on reliability of the aforementioned hechsher, but are you aware that most companies run full production on Shabbos? As far as retail goes,  Kof-K supervises BJ's bakeries open on Shabbos, OK certified Costco bakeries open on Shabbos, OU certifies Jewel bakeries open on Shabbos, KVH supervises Stop & Shop, Shaw's, and Star Market bakeries open on Shabbos. cRc certified Dunkin that's open on Shabbos.

Re: Which hotels have Two bedroom suites?
Moko - What is the rate of success in getting the upgrades to a suite (when there are suites at the hotel)? What level of loyalty status is that with?

Thanks
IME, approx 90%.
I've only been turned down a couple of times when I really tried to get it. Sometimes, I'll request a confirmed upgrade from the hotel to a one bedroom immediately after booking and then request an upgrade to a two bedroom when checking (usually online).
Most of our success has been with TownePlace and Residence Inn, though we've also received such upgrades at an occasional Comfort Suites (2 bedrooms are rare), Hyatt House, Embassy Suites,  Staybridge Suites, Sonesta ES, and Candlewood Suites.
Most recent upgrade was winter break at the awesome Residence Inn, Neptune, NJ in mid February.
My wife wanted to wait to do YT clothing shopping when I went to kasher a pesach hotel near Lakewood but for some reason a friend urged her not to wait until last minute.... :)

I got in on this just before the price jumped over $100.
I happened to have been in the market for such a bag and was about to pull the trigger on the Amazon basics one when I noticed this. Thanks.
just took it for a test drive today. By the time my trip is over I'll have tried it on 4 different aircraft.
TL:DR version: it's a gorgeous looking, luxurious feeling briefcase but has some serious flaws as a carry-on .

Now for the review: it's basically an oversized briefcase clipped onto a trolley. I'll post some pics after I get home.
From rear to front.
It has a double zippered sleeve to slide over a larger suitcase when not using the trolley.
Then large pocket at the rear with a separate laptop sleeve insert. I don't really see the point, but they tout it as TSA friendly... Who doesn't have TSA pre  ???
The next pocket is your "office pocket" with a bunch of different document, card, and pen pockets.
After that, is the 2 inch expandable zipper, followed by a slim full size pocket on the front of the bag which I found convenient for my laptop.
Lastly, 2 side by side small front pockets meant for cellphones and the like. This pocket has a pretty serious flaw, since the "clasp" is a fake buckle magnetic button which opens fairly easily.
The trolley overall feels flimsy and poorly designed.
The wheels stick out a bit on each side of the bag and seem to constantly get caught on corners and aircraft seats. Surprisingly, it fit on a 200 overhead when place face down, wheels out.
The clips also seem like they can put too much strain on the bag

Re: Life Hacks, Post Your Favorites!
When the TSA first banned water bottles through the gate, a college friend of mine was pregnant, and traveling to Taiwan with her husband. He said that they should try this. I told him I'd love to be a fly on the wall when you try to explain to the TSA that it's really a solid and not a liquid.
https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/ice

Problem is, not all TSA agents are familiar with this and some will give you a hard time. Not worth the time and effort of trying to show them and escalating to a supervisor.

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread
What's the problem?
do you check for an OU on every box if cereal you regularly purchase? Many don't. They should but they don't. Now say the 9oz box is has a kosher symbol, 12 oz doesn't, but the 16 oz does. Can you see how that might be confusing? Would if the case of  1.5 oz  do but the 1.75 oz ones don't and they have an identical label.

It's more if a widespread issue and the consumer should be aware. You also run into a similar issue where a product one region is certified but in another region the same product is not certified. Often the only solution is to decertify all of it.

Re: JetBlue Kicks Frum Family Off Plane For 2 Year Old Not Wearing A Mask I strongly disagree with the policy. If it's dangerous for a two yr old then it's dangerous for an infant as well. Two make the mandate apply specifically at an age known as "terrible" (twos), seems pathetically ridiculous.
That said, basics in conflict resolution is to de-escalate. Explaining to the person in control why they're wrong and your right is the exact opposite.
My two yr old would never keep a mask on for 30 seconds let alone a whole flight, but I wouldn't argue with the FA. I would apologize and stick it on his face knowing full well that he's going to rip it off in a minute. I would do that every time it was requested.
I would also try and shield him from view of the aisle by sitting him in the window seat and trying to entertain him facing the window.

Re: Corona Time 3 Day Getaway to the Berkshires
A little late to this party (as usual). I have a family member with a house in the Berkshires that he allows me to borrow for a few days each summer. (He is not frum, I am, so it's nowhere near Jiminy Peak). There are always a lot of fun things to do in the area.

Aside from Jiminy Peak, here are a couple of other ideas:
- Ashuwillticook Rail Trail - this is a lakeside walking/running/biking trail along the Cheshire Resevoir in Lanesbourough. You will have to bring your own bikes to ride it - but there are bike shops in the area that might rent them. The whole trail is 12 miles, but atthe moment they are redoing 6 miles of it. We brought our bikes and had a nice ride - https://www.mass.gov/locations/ashuwillticook-rail-trail

- Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary - https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/pleasant-valley another nice set of hiking trails from easy to hard - they also have live beavers living in the sanctuary - $5/person. In Lenox

- The Worthington Golf Club - https://worthingtongolfclub.com/ - a small executive course in Worthington. It cost about $105 for the 4 of us to play, which included loaner clubs and golf carts. This is slightly more challenging than a pitch and putt course, but manageable if you are a beginner. This is about 30-45 min from central Pittsfield, add 10-15 more from Jiminy Peak

- Lee Premium Outlets - https://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/lee - a very small outlet mall.

- The Basketball Hall of fame is an hour away in Springfield mass

- Clapp Park in Pittsfield has some really nice playgrounds for kids - it's on Housatonic Street

In non-corona years, we've also gone to Bousqet - a ski resort near the pittsfield airport - they have a small water park in the in the summer with 3-4 water slides (and a smaller set for little kids). They went out of business because of corona, and are not open this season, but they have new owners, so we'll see where it goes.(not tznius friendly)

When my kids we're younger we went to Ioka Valley Farm which has farm themed rides and a petting zoo - right near JP
We also went to the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, which had some nice exhibits for kids as well - it's currently under renovation
and so much more.... This summer inspired us to purchase a couple of quality inflatable kayaks. The are is chock full of free hikes, waterfalls, lakes and rivers perfect for great free fun. I'm sure there are great spots like this all over the country.
Maybe next year we can do a real multi day river excursion and....

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread
Disagree - had everything shut down the virus Numbers probably would have been really low what do you think would happen after 3 months of low numbers? A reopening...look at Israel! In hindsight You wouldn't open like Israel either - that's only now after you see what went on in Israel... To say that had we just known how deadly/catchy the virus is lives would've definitely been saved is wrong. We never saw a bad reopening, a NYC, a Sweden, We probably would've went the Israeli route at the minimum - and Israel saw a NYC and still did it that way....
are you disagreeing with the first point? I didn't say lockdown was there solution. Acknowledging the virus and dealing with it is the solution. Trump's solution was literally to brush it under the rug and not deal with it
