Grand Canyon / Sedona quick trip
We were coming from LAX and debated driving (9 hours) or flying to PHX and driving up. Ultimately decided on flying for a number of reasons, primarily because we had someone to watch our 2 and 4 year olds, but we could only be away for one night. Kids also did not want to sit in the car that long.
We flew SW from BUR-PHX for 10K RR points a seat RT, transferred from UR.
BUR was a mechaya compared to LAX, and I would recommend it highly, all things being equal.
Landed at 11am, brutal 120-degree heat. Everything went smoothly, to the rental shuttle, to FOX, which I had booked through, and was by far the cheapest, I could find.
There are not that many cars in PHX in the summertime, kind of like Florida. Therefore, selection is limited, but I was given the choice between a sienna with 30K miles and a caravan with 5k. Took the caravan. Was nice, but sadly missing basic things like usb ports.
Called Segal’s on the way and put in an order for dinner (figured it would stay warm in the car). Service was nice and efficient, food was almost ready when I got there, and wrapped well etc.
Moved on to La Belle Pizzeria, called on the way (5-minute drive) to order, and added a few things. Have to say – this was a first-rate pizzeria, excellent food, and good service. Would not be out of place in a much larger city. We got pizza (very thin crust) baked ziti, garlic knots (with cheese, new for me, but good) Greek salad, Capri salad and stuffed portabella mushrooms. All good and highly recommended.
We ate there, and then hit the road for the canyon, going the highway route. Nondescript drive up.
We had made reservations at the Holiday INN express in GC village, I prefer name brand, point-bearing hotels, and wanted to be as close as possible. It was the only one that fit the bill. Paid cash, $250 a room, two rooms next door to each other. We stopped off, checked in, put our stuff and food in the rooms, and were off to the canyon.
No line at the entrance (it was about 430 pm by now) and paid the $30 admission and were in. right off the bat it was much more foresty, and we saw numerous elk in the woods, on the side and middle of the road. Magnificent.
2017-06-20 17.13.51,
It was cooler there than Phoenix, a balmy 105, but that was at the rim. In the canyon was much much hotter, and the Park Service made it clear that it was suicidal to hike at all. So therefore, we did what we would have done anyway but with no guilt conscience ;D , and drove around.
We went first to Mather Point, and made an Oseh Maaseh Bereishis. The grandeur of the canyon cannot be captured in words, pictures, or videos, you have to see it. Absolutely stunning.
2017-06-20 17.43.38
We spent some time at Mather Point, and then drove to the general market where we got some more drinks, bathrooms, souvenirs, etc. Sunset is at about eight, and by this time it was about 645, so we headed over to Yavapai point, a little early for sunset, but got parking and good positioning.
We had asked around, and although the differences are slight, Yavapai seems to get the most panoramic view, since it juts out.
Again, this shkiah is indescribable and I will not try. Definitely bucket list worthy. Sunset is supposed to be better, but 5am was not happening.
2017-06-20 19.28.14
2017-06-20 19.34.20
Driving out of the park, we saw numerous additional elk, which was a lot of fun.

Went back to the hotel, ate the Segal’s food, which I don’t want to review because it wouldn’t be fair to do so, being as we ate it at room temperature 10 hours after it was prepared. It did the trick. Took a walk down the block to the Texaco to get some drinks, and declined the available snacks.
2017-06-20 21.02.02 2017-06-20 21.02.34
Wednesday morning, everyone felt that it was unnecessary to go back to the canyon (it really only needs a couple hours when traveling with kids. We went to the IMAX, had a bunch of coupons, and was very economical. Very interesting and informative, not much kefirah age of the world wise, and a little bit of Indian pritzus at the beginning. Worthwhile in my opinion, gives you a much broader perspective than seeing the canyon.
We then drove back to Phoenix, via Sedona. We took the 89A, which was undergoing a ton of construction, looks like they are turning a lot of it into a 4 lane from a 2 lane, but today it was a one lane. Then it turned into one of the most magnificent roads I have ever driven. You want to just stop the car every few minutes and take pictures. I believe it is called the Oak Creek Canyon, and I read that it is as close as you can get to driving through the Grand Canyon, totally hear that.
2017-06-21 13.37.07
89A runs into Sedona, which is beautiful. It added so much to our trip, I would not recommend doing the GC without it, and made me happy that we choose to fly over drive – we never would have seen it.
We did not get out of the car in Sedona (other than Baskin – Robbins). The mercury was at 115, a pink jeep tour in that did not sound like fun, and they wouldn’t allow my 9 month old anyway. If the weather had been cooler, we would have considered it.
We then drove from Sedona back to the 17 via route 179, a beautiful Scenic drive of the Sedona Mountains.
Went straight to Kitchen 18 for dinner, food was great, portions were large and we were all happy. Before tip, the price was the same as Segal’s to feed the family.
Back to PHX, returned the car, and I am writing this draft on the return flight to BUR. All in all a great trip. Thank you to @aarony for his recommendations and to DDF for the inspiration!

+1 I say there should be a policy, anyone getting a tuition break has to give their tzedakah money to the school and not to the flashy tzedakahs orgs.
Doesn't work as maaser if obligated, but then again if you're getting a tuition break you should not have a chiyuv to give maaser

Re: Silent Killer

Is it because they stopped going to meetings?

Not arguing that it doesn't work for everyone, but the people it works for generally continue to go to meetings regularly for years and years after they become sober. And it does work for a lot of people, and saves their lives. It also makes their lives more meaningful and fulfilling, due to the spiritual angle, which, among other benefits, helps prevent relapse

Re: Priority Club/IHG Credit Card Master Thread
Saw the 80k offer, so I applied for myself and another for my wife. Just got a letter saying she was rejected (credit score low 800s, I think this is 4/24, 2 in 24 according to chase credit journey, kind of new to this game). Seems my card will be approved, it shows up on my chase page thought I havent officially heard back yet. I recently applied for reserve and INK for both of us (maybe it was because she was AU on some of mine?). Should I call to find out why? Try to see if they would consider giving her the card becasue she is generally reliable or some other strategy?
TIA and LMK if this is the wrong thread
Sounds more like a 2/30 issue. See here.
Can I still get this card if I'm more than 5/24?

Yes, silence is an issue. No, that doesn't mean that there are no chashuva people in the world besides for Zvi Gluck.

(FYI, while I was in Uber, I screenshotted my boarding pass. Not sure why, but it's a good practice, e.g. if your phone dies, or if TSA is out of service, or whatever......  It scanned successfully, and off I went.  From now on, I'll definitely be making this a practice.)
On a recent flight AA actually told me to do this.

I consistently get the desktop notifications several minutes before it's online. sometimes I miss them, then check the website and its not there yet. the phone - chrome notifications come a little later and the text message way last.

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread One point to add, or be aware of, is that all kashrus supervision is a money maker and operating as a business, usually a non profit.
So in a sense the smaller hashgochos have more negiyus than the individual RCs or decision makers at a larger organization

Re: Rubashkin freed from prison.
No I am talking about the Federal charges that were dropped after the 86 convictions of fraud. Please let’s not pretend there was no child labor. If you want retry this make sure you use facts and not personal feelings.
I don't believe there was intentional child labor. Remember, it's dangerous ground, and often illegal, to ask age or even legal status. Puts employers in a real bind, as many employers and small business owners here can attest to.
The way we find out a social is fake is only when the IRS alerts us months after the first filings, sometimes years.

Re: Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving? what @chulent said is true, the more schools that become necessary due to community growth the more specificity there is in each school. And sadly, the more in town the city becomes.
For example, LA is well known for the Chabad, Chassideishe and general community being very well integrated. However, consider that when my wife was in HS there was only one Bais Yaakov. Over the past 15 years they have opened a Chabad Bais Yaakov and a Chassideshe Bais Yaakov. They also opened a second, less academic, Bais Yaakov.
Will my children feel the same integration that we did?
Consider further, that in my children's K-8, mainstream school (there is also a Chabad school, and a chassideshe school which opened in the last two decades) there is still a broad mix of families, from super yeshivish to TV in the living room. (I'd guess that at this point 99% of the parent body cover hair etc.) Most are squarely in the middle. However, the influences that I have trouble with come clearly from the right, not from the more modern side. Because if the Kleins, go to Bermuda for Pesach, or the Friedman's mommy listens to non jewish music, I can explain that to my children, and show how we have such a awesome and beautiful Torahdige life. However, when Rabbi A.'s daughter has a brand new wardrobe every YT, and my son comes home from Rabbi B.'s home, after playing with his son and asking to continue the video, because they 'have a computer that hangs on the wall in the playroom' and were watching LizardLand or whatever, and Rabbi A. and Rabbi B. are considered by all to be chashuva klei kodesh, and Rabbi C.'s wife has a DVD gemach of kosher movies, which we don't like our kids to watch, I sort of feel like I'm better off with my kids having the more modernishe friends.

I must have been living under a rock. I and my chevra would never ever ever think of [not] doing those things. Not to show off or ch"v put people down. But to make statements that sounds like what ur saying is the norm is completely foreign to me. Maybe it's my OOT upbringing. IDK. But I'm blown away.

Re: Why is our divorce rate rising drastically?
In the past decade, the divorce rate in our community has risen several times over.

This is broadly broken down into 3 groups (in decreasing prevalence)
1- Newly weds. 20s. 0-2.7 years of marriage
2- People who have been married for decades. 50s-60s. children are now teens/out of house
3- Some group in between.

Why is this happening?
The same community where no one davens?

Re: Pesach Programs and False Advertising There are a number of threads discussing programs, would be good to put them together.
Look carefully at ads, many do not advertise hashgocha. They advertise guest speakers, and people assume that if rabbi X eats there so can I. But does rabbi X actually eat there?

Re: Pesach Programs and False Advertising
I don't know this person.  But my gut reaction is that seems very messed up. I can't imagine serving ppl food that I wasn't comfortable with.
Thoroughly discussed and argued elsewhere, there are two distinct schools of thought here. Pesach seems to be more understandable to others than generally serving food you won't eat.

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread
Who's there to call regarding this product?
K is put on by the company, so you'd have to call them and ask them if it's their own assessment or under rabbinical supervision. then you'd have to verify with the Rabbi. also, there's a real chashash here of Gelatin -

Supposedly this is why the OK stopped certifying Plantes 20 years ago or so, they didn't like that some products were real treif. The OU has seperate production lines for the kosher stuff. (all this according to the internet).
