Re: Ads on DDMS
Friday popcorn in the house!

Lots of good blogs have vanished and many more will in the next couple of years as the walls continue to close in.

I have no idea how someone could think that asking people to unblock ads is worse than a handout. You're not paying a membership fee for reading a site or posting on a forums, nor does it cost you a dime to unblock ads. Obviously when the ads look like Times Sq or cover your whole screen, they don't deserve to be unblocked, but otherwise what exactly is the issue?

The costs to maintain a large website and forum with big traffic spikes are truly massive. Income sources are incredibly fickle and precarious and I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Back when we had direct relationships with the banks there was no need for adsense, but there is clearly a need to diversify income streams.

Yes, BH the site provides a good living for my family and JJs family, but if it stopped being profitable, then yes, it would close.

I'm not asking for donations, just think twice before you decide to deprive a site that you use and enjoy of a revenue stream.
Just saw this. Amazing that you even have to spell this out to people. Thanks Dan and JJ for everything. I always do what I can to support the site. It's basic menshlickeit, how someone can not see that is beyond me.

Re: Vancouver Master Thread
Are either Vancouver/Whistler or Banff/Jasper good trips if bringing a 1 year old along? I haven't read up on them, so just looking for a general consensus - are these places mostly nature hikes (seems that way from TR pics)?
Vancouver/Whistler is definitely more kid friendly, than Banff/Jasper. That being said I have done both with kids and we had a great time.

Re: Destinations with Shuls/Chabads near Points Hotels
I think most people would hold of your definition. You can write the definition in a footnote
I have like 3-4 questions that I ask before, basically lights in staircase, access to staircase without needing a key card to get in and out, motion sensors in the room, manual door to lobby. Ironically whenever making these calls, it always occurs to me that a terrorist would ask very similar questions.....  :o

Interesting that it filled up so quickly. Despite their best efforts, the MSers remain a step ahead of the RATs.
Some do. I unfortunately was less than halfway done. These extra steps are super annoying, especially when you are trying to do your day job as well.

Re: Amex Offers Discussion Thread Last round of offers I used 3 laptops and 2 tablets to try and keep things organized. The issue for me is at a certain point the effort vs reward ratio doesn't cut it anymore. Unfortunately, that is the exact outcome Amex is hoping for, and I can't imagine I'm alone on this.

I for one did not hit hard, as you know many have 99+AU's I only have immediate family with same address,  When i got the credit back it was for a mistake they did, I ended up talking to a supervisor in a dept. I never heard before, can't remember the name, I asked too many questions to understand the new Amex offers, in brief his answer was 1 per card member, not per SSN, for e.g if i had an offer on all my cards, as the primary holder, that once i used that offer on one card, that is the only allowed credit, if i used it on more cards, no credit or reverse charges, and as long as I as the primary used a certain offer, then all AU,s are not eligible for credit. So AU's are no longer useful.
Thanks for sharing that. At this point im not sure if its a case of DROPR or not. Even their updated terms indicate that its limited to one per card member. Based on their terms it would be a very difficult argument to make that the primary automatically disqualifies all AU's just because the primary got the offer already...

Re: Seasons supermarkets files for bankruptcy
Kosher supermarkets cater to a niche market. They can ONLY be profitable in areas that have a large FRUM Jewish community.

Seasons was expanding too quickly and biting off more than they could chew. Upper West Side? The lease alone probably wipes out any profits. Many massive retail chains like Walgreens, Rite Aid etc overpay for leases in Manhattan hotspots and take losses just to have a presence there. Seasons canít sustain that.
Couldn't agree more. I don't think the one in Passaic ever made money. They were paying rent through the roof, and it just wasn't that busy....

I cancelled fios 4 days after the bill was generated and the lady claims that it's not a prorated bill and if I cancel 1 or 29 days later I have to pay the full bill.

Can anyone verify that?
Yes, if its internet only. Verizon is the worst. Let me save you my 3 plus hours spent on the phone with supervisors and managers. Verizon will not prorate on internet only packages. I had already been promised that it would be prorated but they told me to go to hell.

Re: Amex Offers Discussion Thread
I've been able to save multiple offers to different cards under same SSN/login last few months.  Worked with staples, lowes, and best buy a month back.    Use my phone and pc and add offers at the same time.  I added the staples and lowes offers to my au account under different login.  Should I be worried about clawbacks if I use the offer on the au account as well since the transactions show up under the main account?
It was a problem for some last time. You should be able to easily fight it with Amex though, as it is one per person.

Re: PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others
I really do not understand how people fall for this. I guess it is a combination of greed and ignorance, where is the risk/reward in this? These are all planned scams .
People are desperate, and believe all frum Jews donít steal. Considering that many do, itís a big problem.

January 22, 2019, 05:40:51 PM
Re: PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others
They werenít a buying group. They actually had very competent buyers, and the underlying fundamentals of their initial products was very promising. HNWIís (Lakewood standards) were the first round of investors, and they did very competent due diligence. However, the market saturation point for that set of products was pretty narrow, הן מצד the suppliers, and הן מצד, the actual demand. Also, it was very labor intensive to turn around, and the ďwarehouseĒ was run pretty inefficiently, which increased overhead (the attitude was weíll hire until we get the guy who can do it. Now imagine the HR mess).

So they turned to other products. Now the washing machine started spinning water, as most of them couldnít return over their initial purchase price (I guess thatís buying group style) but the high overhead shot up even more!

Then they bought retail stores in a line they had decent experience with, sunk serious money into it and opened a t****ing company to boot, which was a cause for internal politics, and all went downhill.

In the meantime, the returns on the initial products disappeared to competitors (very common in Amazon, a 2 year cycle for a hot product is considered an eternity). So now nothing was making money, and suddenly the fixed costs of keeping the shop open made them desperate.

At no point did they intend to lose a dime. They had a innocent vision of becoming the next Klein-Pikarski, and understood that they need to take risks. But unfortunately, the risks werenít calculated and the רבשע wanted otherwise. There were Heter Iskas for every dime. They were non PL.
Itís good they had a hetter Iska. Could you imagine if they stole the money without that?  ::)

$175 credit. It seems like OP is only making $15 if I understood correctly. Or maybe itís MR offer so worth more.

Kicked Out Of Centurion Lounge In LAS For Eating Kosher Sandwich Just wanted to hear some thoughts about this... Here is the story in a nutshell:

I was at the Centurion Lounge @ LAS last week and it was extremely overcrowded. Like I have done many times before I got myself a drink from the bar, and took out my kosher Sub. 2 minutes in a security officer comes over to me and says no outside food allowed, and if I want to eat my sandwich I would have to eat it outside. He says we serve food right over there, to which I responded that there are no kosher options available. He says again policy is no outside food, I said ok, but I never knew that that was the policy and there is no sign stating that, he just ignored me and walked away. Considering at this point I was 2/3 done, I just finished my sandwich. My reasoning was that he didn't bother responding to me, then I don't have to make myself too crazy. Either way he doubled back 10 seconds later to see if I listened. I was eating my last bite then. He disappeared into the back , and came back with the club manger. Manager says I gotta ask you to leave. I am like its fine I am done. He says no you violated club policy so you must leave the club now. He starts picking up my knapsack. I said lets call cardmember services, since I pay $550 a year for the privilege of coming to these clubs. Then I asked his name which he refused to give. After dialing Amex he says you need to leave to make that call, and continues to walk with my backpack to the door. I calmly responded that I didn't think he was being fair, and that I tried having a conversation with the security guy, and he just walked away. I also pointed out that if he was confident in his decision, he should have no problem giving his name, as he is just enforcing Amex policy.  His response was don't make me call airport security and forcibly remove you... Having images of Dr Dao in my mind I obediently left.

Keep in mind I did not raise my voice once, and all questions were asked in a polite calm tone. I was looking for clarification as I honestly had no clue that was the policy. I have eaten many sandwiches in clubs around the world, and was never told anything. In a perfect world should I have stopped eating the sandwich? Yes, however IMO these guys were on a major power trip, trying to empty an overflowing club. What do you guys think?

Re: Kicked Out Of Centurion Lounge In LAS For Eating Kosher Sandwich
Easy to say as a spectator after the fact... When a TSA agent tells your wife to take her shaitel off, I doubt your first reaction will be, hey let's record this guy for example...etc.
Had that once actually, they did give us the option of a private screening in a side room if she didn't want to remove it in public, which is what we did.
ETA: IIRC correctly it was a snood, and since she beeped in the metal detector she was asked to remove it.

For one, people have been telling people to post more.
The post padding deletions and PMs are getting unbearable. Might need to undo this and/or just delete this board.
Delete a whole board because of a few scammers? While I think the new system is smart, it would be a huge shame to lose this feature on DDF because of a few idiots. Bottom line is, people do this at their own risk..

Re: Misc Credit Card Questions
Amex doesn't allow their travel credit to be used on seat upgrades. (I wonder if any of their cards do. I'm thinking no, but I'm not sure.)  I'm specifically looking for a travel credit that can be applied to seat upgrades (economy to business; business to first, that sort of thing).  Thanks for replying. :)
Donít know where you are getting that from, Amex definitely does give the airline credit for seat upgrades.

Re: Gift Card and gas Promo at Stop & Shop or Giant
So you don't have to use the same ss card when the coupon is redeemed. I thought the coupon has to be matched with ss card.
Coupon is generic and can be used on any card. As explained upthread the earning side is unlimited. Redemption as a general rule is limited to 10 total coupons per card (nothing to do with transactions itís total coupon redemption per card). Getting additional cards will help on the redemption side. Keep in mind that S&S is pretty good at merging accounts. I think I gave you enough to work with.

Re: If You Could Ask AMEX Execs One Question, What Would It Be? If they can go back to the option of signing up for Amex offers via a link. (Used to have it for SBS back in the day). It makes it a lot easier to add offers you want, and honestly now that they donít allow more than one offer per card holder/AU, it wonít be abused. No reason to have to run through all your cards multiple times and hope to be targeted. I think that this is something easily implemented and benefits both Amex and the consumer.
