Yeah, its fine. if you like a zoo where you dont have to walk miles etc its fine. but its not a beautiful zoo in anyway... - BTW, the animals are officially nebachs.. so dont be surprised if some look nebach also sometimes.

Actually no, people don't "go through" orders. They come flooding into some ship feed somewhere and some warehouse umpaloompa packs and ships it out.

Re: Hurricane Irma
The Lubavitcher Rebbe never reasoned WHY the Holocaust happened. Further, these concepts are often foreign to judaism, Avraham tried to save sedom and amorah, evil cities, purely of the merit of 10 righteous.

The gemara (or Rambam?) says an ir hanidachas is spared if there is 1 house with a mezuzah in it.

Truly yes there have been times where entire communities were destroyed for the sins of a few but its foolish to assign reasons why things do or do not happen

Re: Law School
Not quite sure what the difference between a frum man and a frum woman is. Both are frum, both keep Shabbos/YT. Why is it "normal" if a frum guy works in big law but not normal/doable for a frum woman? It's almost like Jews are stuck in the 1800s while the rest of the world has moved on.
Oh, it's because frum women help their husbands fullfil the obligation to bear children.

After that female mothers are the needed to nurture the young children.

Is this news to you?

Re: Law School

So you're telling me that non-Jewish women either don't have kids, or they have kids but they don't nurture their children? Wow, that's really interesting.

Or, maybe, it's because many if not most "frumer" girls schools put these ideas in their students' heads that Jewish women should only get a degree in making chulent and kugel and if a girl would actually say that she wants to be a lawyer or a doctor when she grows up, she'd get looked at like she's from outer space. There's a reason why once you shift over to more modern schools, you have plenty of girls going to college / grad schools.

Correct. Non Jewish professional women almost never have kids before 30 (or 35+ if they are very career oriented). And even then they only have a couple max..

Jewish girls are educated to observe the Torah which commands a man to have at least two kids ASAP.
This has nothing to do with chulent. It's just reality. An apple is just an apple.

Re: Law School

-1 on the first statement. Plenty of non Jewish professional women who have kids before 30. I know people like this that I work with, that I went to school with, etc. You don't strike me as a guy who has any non-Jewish friends. So your statement is based on a sample size of what? 2 people? Maybe 3 if you're one of the more open minded people in Lakewood.

As to the second statement - *facepalm*. You do realize that there are plenty of respectable Ravs who give heterim to not have kids right away, right? Reasons include financial, career, etc. Not everyone holds that you'll burn in hell if you don't try to set a record for the amount of kids you can possibly have between the age of 19 of 35.

A) correct that I have no non Jewish friends, but have worked with hundreds of non Jewish coworkers. Don't recall any that had kids before 30 but it's definitely possible. (- besides for one very very religious Muslim, who's husband from Islamabad insisted on it... Long story).

(I did have male co-workers though that had wives around 30 w kids... Those women didn't have much of a carreer.)

B) I did hear Rav shechters take on this recently on the headlines podcast... Don't  wanna get into this here... But it's not at all simple to snap your fingers and get blanket heter...

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread

As for the term Chareidy Hechsher, that is such a meaningless term. What defines such. In recent years we've seen new Hechsherim pop up like mushrooms. They slap on the word Badatz or Mehadrin and oilam goilam buys into it. Some might be more competent than others, and some might not have the resources, knowledge, or even skills to operate in today's food production environment (restaurants being a totally different story).

A bona fide left wing modern orthodox organization is very well defined though.

Re: The Pros And Cons Of Where You Live
How about Linden? Think there is a growing, young Modox community there. Near Elizabeth, so all amenities from there. Don't know if they have large homes, though. Mostly small homes, around $200k, though, with the crazy NJ property taxes.
A large chassidim community is moving in from BP.

Re: Do you Daven?
Please explain to me why it's an issue?

If he told me he's done with this 'fake frumness' and wants us to move to a non-jewish community- I might even be ok with it.

If we define fake frumness as acting frum but not having any relationship with gd (ie not davening to him etc), then I hear what you are saying. Otherwise this needs work....

Better question, why does it bother YOU that he doesn't daven? Just cultural, or you are disturbed by the lack of commitment? Do you daven?

January 10, 2018, 06:11:05 PM
1
Re: Do you Daven? The big issue for me with all this is that the the primary source of yiras shomayim is only absorbed by children directly from their parents. It is not something that is taught academically for the most part.

So if the parents are very lacking, the kids are totally lost. They will probably end up orthoprax at best. Notwithstanding the millions invested in yeshiva tuition.

Re: Pesach Programs and False Advertising
Why are you assuming that I am assuming that people don't inquire about the Hashgocho?

I didn't c"v mean to say that they don't have a Hashgocho, but the purpose of advertising is to get people to buy. The fact that these ads work even without listing Hashgochos is what I am talking about.

The selling points of the program are the facility, the entertainment, the attractions, etc. The quality of the Kashrus isn't a selling point (well for Smillow it does seem to be, yet still without a name behind the Kashrus claims IN THE PRINT AD).
I agree. Our general community care very little about kashrus. This is just another proof. Ppl are satisfied with *any* rubber stamp etc. As long as it's ok with the neighbors.

Re: Re: Pesach Programs and False Advertising

I find quantum physics amusing. All those scribbles and stuff that doesnít make any sense to me or any of my friends. I canít even see what in the world these people are droning on about quantum indeterminacy and such garbage that makes zero sense to me. I think everything just took a wrong turn after Newton and everyone just went off the deep end. So the whole thing is just ridiculous and irrelevant. Iím willing to debate any quantum physicist to prove the futility of his lifeís work.

Obviously coming from someone who had no more than casual contact with quantum physics such a statement is unqualified and reveals the sheer ignorance of the one making such a statement. If one would spend years speaking to top scientists in the field and going through thousands of volumes of published literature on the subject his opinions would carry some weight.

Likewise if one were to make a serious effort to learn the Mishnah gemorah medrash yerushalmi, Zohar, words of the rishonim, achronim, the hundreds of books of authentic Jewish philosophy, shaalos uteshuvos, writings of the later and contemporary achronim, spend time talking to the experts in the subject (the Gedolim and profound Jewish thinkers of the generation) then one can be taken seriously if he is dissmissive of the whole ideology and how the current body of Halacha and the leaders of Torah Jewry and their ideologyís developed. You, my friend, are passing summary judgement on the whole ideology with only the most basic, passing understanding of the tens of thousands of volumes of knowledge on the subject written by what are objectively acknowledged as some of the most brilliant men the world has ever seen. Please come back when you have acquired  some meaningful knowledge in said subject and you can then consider yourself qualified to debate the issues.

Like. (Can't formally do it on tapa)

Re: More concerned with the way others dress than hechsher?
not sure your point ? You are either dimwitted or deaf. I dont drink stam yaynam, I said it should be repealed. These moronic attacks are childish. You clearly have not learned nuanced discussion techniques.

I.E. the reason stam yaynam was implemented is not relevant nowadays
There are very clear processes and procedures in halacha regarding which types of gezeiros can be repealed and by whom.

Unfortunately for you, the gezeira of Stam yayin cannot be repealed under any circumstances. (Technically this is due to the halacha that a gezeira that was nispashet brov/kol yisrael, cannot be repealed even by a Beis din that could be godol brlechochma uvminyan.)

So you really need to spend more time studying with you chavrusa. -focus on the second perek of avoda Zara in shas bavli for now, then post back here without sounding ridiculous.
