Re: Global entry application fee for sale
Wow, people pay $150 plus $100?
I think it's basically a scam for those that don't know any better.

Re: Jewish Websites Allowing Ads For The Binary Options Scam
They dont care. It keeps the lights on at sites like COL and VosIzNeias. Why would they give up the only advertising revenue that they have on a consistent basis? They keep responding "Oh, we didnt know, we dont control the content of the ads on your computer" and statements like that.

The only way to get people to realize that this is worse than casino gambling, which at least in most countries is regulated, is to scream at the top of your lungs. Dan, this is DDMS worthy. At least it should be pinned at the top like the "Dont Swipe for Others" thread. People are losing money and getting "had" every day. This is not an investment product. Its casino gambling with the veneer of legitimacy peppered onto it using buzzwords like FOREX and investment.

Lo sa'amod al dam reyecha.

GEt the message out.
Agreed 100%. I don't know why, but for some reason, this is really bothering me. I would love to see a DDMS post and I believe it's completely warranted

Re: Optimum internet I'm very happy with Optimum in Brooklyn. Speed is fast (100) and it's pretty reliable. I wouldn't switch to FIOS even if it was available.
Verizon has horrible CS plus I don't want that huge box(es) in my living room. I know a few people in Monsey that switched to FIOS and then moved back to Optimum. They are lucky their competition is so bad.

Re: What kind of Gemach is needed (in Lakewood)? I would consider opening a gemach in another community. Lakewood has the highest gemachs per capita [citation needed] of any frum community and any conceivable gemach has already been established.

Re: Anybody try to return Charles Tyrwhitt shirts from UK? I've returned many times from CT shirts. They provide a label with a US address to ship it. However, they do deduct the return shipping cost ($5.95 IINM) from the refund. That's where PP return shipping refund comes in handy.

Re: Trader Joe's Master Thread I love Trader Joe's. We stock up rice pasta, butters, spices, ice cream, canned foods, some produce, nuts and cereals. Usually at the Court St. location, I have the biggest cart in sight (unless there are other frum Jews there), most of the typical customers at this location seem to just buy a few things on their way home from work..

I found this Freakonomics podcast on Trader Joe's very insightful. Tj's also has their own podcast.

Re: COVID-19 (Wuhan Novel Coronavirus) Pandemic Master Thread It seems like the low number of confirmed cases in the US until recently was just a lack of testing. If you can't test, then there are no confirmed cases. But it seems like once they started expanding the testing, we are getting so many positive cases. My guess is that we have thousands of undetected cases of the virus in the US by now.

Amazon OOS of Tylenol good idea to grab in the local stores if you find any.

You must be a math expert yourself if you came up with the average Jewish family size of 9 in Brooklyn.

Re: Optimum internet
Got on ebay for $50 works perfectly and have a phone line as well.
ARRIS Touchstone TM822G DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 Telephony Modem Black
I wouldn't recommend this modem since 8x4 is on the low side. It won't give you full speed on Optimum 200 or higher. Stick to 16x8 or higher depending on your Optimum tier.
I bought the ARRIS SB6183 (Internet only) for $25 on craigslist. Works well with Optimum 200.

Re: Optimum internet
Anyone have any thoughts on this one?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00J65WQHU/
It seems like the used one is a decent price for a modem and router built into one.
I would stay away from combination modem/router units because they are usually mediocre at both. Also, considering its 16x8 channels that may be too little in a few years, so you would need to replace the unit instead of just replacing the modem. Best to keep the modem and router separate and it also comes out cheaper. It's like whole life insurance, you end up with a mediocre product that is more expensive.
/end rant.

Re: Home Depot protection plan Without any more details, I would say no. But if you were to post the cost of the machines and the cost of the protection, there are some instances where it can be worth it.
My general rule is that I keep insurance for the big stuff that I can't afford to cover and skip it when it comes to small things like appliances, electronics, and other narrow coverage plans.

Re: Tax software --- TurboTax the only one? Where to buy? This is my 4th year using Free Tax USA and I highly recommend it. Federal is free, state is $15 and there are no upsells, everything is included. I've used their support a few times and they respond quickly.

Re: Retirement Funds
I have no need for more tax deferment this year but would still like to contribute to my retirement. Should I still just put the money in my sep ira or is there a better option?
If you're looking for free advice, I would post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/
Seriously?

This is where you ask these kinds of questions?

And you really expect an intelligent answer of value based on that limited bit of information that you provided, rather than having a professional review your complete situation and give you an informed recommendation?

Re: FIRE movement & Financial Minimalism To answer OP's question I would say I was part of this movement but have since become distant from it, although I will say it has taught me a lot about finance and savings.
What I came to dislike about the FIRE community was the sheer number of blogs and podcasts all trying to make a living by promoting products (Personal Finance, M1 Finance, CIT Bank, Credit Cards sign-ups and the list goes on.) and giving biased reviews of the benefits of the lifestyle. The other part was seeing on Reddit all the people counting every day until they reached their 'FIRE Number' and then not knowing what to do once they achieved their number. It seems most people just continue to hoard money and don't actually do the RE part. The community is also a little fanatic and prioritizes saving over everything else in life.

However, some of the good things I learned from FIRE are:

Living below my means
Setting up automatic transfers to investment accounts each week
Not trying to time the market
Keeping track of my expenses (I don't call it a budget since I don't spend based on it, rather it lets me know how much my lifestyle costs.)
Choosing to live in a smaller out of town community where expenses are lower instead of living in a higher cost of living city where most of my family is

Of course these lessons are not unique to FIRE but I did pick them up there.

Re: Which Overcrowded Spaces Need To Be Fixed? A little random but I recall as a child I went to Chaim Berlin Yeshiva in Flatbush on Purim and I recall seeing downstairs that they had brought in steel columns to reinforce the floor above where festivities were taking place. This comes to mind because I think it's important to point out that many organizers/events do take safety seriously and plan ahead.

Re: How did the Meron tragedy unfold? So it went from a desire to place blame corroborated with some eyewitness accounts (themselves in utter distress), to a full-fledged conspiracy theory against all the established evidence. No need to follow conspiracy theories anymore, we can now come up with our own. smh.
