Chicago Master Thread Gonna be in Chicago for a few days.
Can people post ideas of things to do and places to eat.

I obviously know about Ken's (and Great American).
And also I was once at the Museum of Science and Industry which was very cool.
Gonna be there in August so probably check out the air and sea show.
Cubs are away the days I'm there but maybe catch a White Sox game.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Meh, 3.25 or 4.75, it's all good to me lol.  It was only about 30 years ago that mortgage rates were 13%
And houses were 1/13 of the price they are now

The way I look at this, is Brady now is 4-2-1 in the SuperBowl.
When you're down by 25 points in the 3rd quarter, I consider that a loss. So he both lost and won this Super Bowl, so I'll give him a tie. 4-2-1.
DACOTY contender?

Re: Bingo wholesale club in Brooklyn Seems very unlikely that they could actually be charged with anti trust violations

"Predatory pricing practices may result in antitrust claims of monopolization or attempts to monopolize. Businesses with dominant or substantial market shares are more vulnerable to antitrust claims. However, because the antitrust laws are ultimately intended to benefit consumers, and discounting results in at least short-term net benefit to consumers, the U.S. Supreme Court has set high hurdles to antitrust claims based on a predatory pricing theory. The Court requires plaintiffs to show a likelihood that the pricing practices will affect not only rivals but also competition in the market as a whole, in order to establish that there is a substantial probability of success of the attempt to monopolize.[4] If there is a likelihood that market entrants will prevent the predator from recouping its investment through supra competitive pricing, then there is no probability of success and the antitrust claim would fail. In addition, the Court established that for prices to be predatory, they must be below the seller's cost."

Can anyone recommend easy hikes around the grand canyon? I'll be there with 4 kids ages 9, 8, 6 and 4. Nothing too strenuous or too long (1-2 hours max)
Do the rim trail. I would also start one of the other trails (e.g. Bright angel) and just go as far you can (provided is not icy). Cool to get a perspective from inside the canyon.

Re: Interesting Articles...
Seems to me like it'd be hard to make the math work on this unless you were going to be paying a lot for your car to start with.
Not really - if you really don't mind the time aspect (deal breaker for me). Let's say he pays on average $26/day - that's $780/month. He gets a luxury car, including insurance. Even if he wasn't making any miles on the deal - that's not crazy. No maintenance. Car ownership (including maintenance and insurance) on a luxury car is not much less than that (if at all). Factor in that he made 150K MP miles on the deal - it's a no brainer

Re: Do we really need the US to recognize Jerusalem as the capital?
Dont they believe it is theirs to begin with?
Yes, Israel believes it has the rights to the entire Israel. As do the Palestinians. Israel has offered time and again to compromise, often to the point of shooting itself in the foot with indefensible borders. The Palestinians have turned them down time and again (see 1949, Oslo accords, Olmert offer). The Palestinians have never even acknowledged Israel's right to exist.
But yeah, there is a peace process.

I cannot sue because it is family and that would mean writing them off as well. No one else seems to understand my side. They fell bad for him that he has this " Gambling problem" they want to fix him and leave me to the side. The amount of times I heard the words "just forgive him and move on" is nauseating. No one says boo to him. He ruined many lives and I do not believe he was "healed" in the rehab places he went to.
Sorry for doubting you. That's fair enough.

Re: Buying A Car In Canada To Export To The US
Same procedure for a year or 2 used car? Please PM me  for details. TIA
Used car - if you're buying privately is much simpler because there is no HST. You can just search on Kijiji and buy and export.
Just get the seller to sign their registration that it's sold, drive it to the states (exporting it at the border - you'll need a letter from the manufacturer that it meets USA standards) and transfer ownership/register it at your local DMV

Now says this
Airfare "deals" to TLV in cattle class with no human class deal.
(Especially when family members living in Israel post about them on family whatsapp, not realizing that at least half of the Americans on the group are only interested in business class deals).
And this
TLV final security screening for business class is only one lane, often resulting in longer wait times that cattle class, giving a cattle like taste to the line.

Re: How hard is it financially to make it in Israel?
Would love to hear from @Ergel here.
I've stopped reading/posting on DDF (taking too much of my time), but got a notification so I'll respond and check back to follow up a couple of times.

I've only been here 8 months, but this is what I see so far.

Tuition is obviously much cheaper or free.

Professional Services are much cheaper (instead of $100 minimum charge for a plumber, it will be 150₪

Health Care is free. It's not an American PPO obviously but I think it's ok. You don't need to wait to see doctors. We have additional health Care which will cover surgery at any doctor and all possible medications and isn't super expensive (still working on, but likely my employer will cover this)

Housing in yerushalayim/RBS is VERY expensive, compare to the most expensive places in NYC

Car ownership is prohibitively expensive, between cost of the car, gas, insurance, registration fees, etc.

Food - some things are more expensive, some are less. Overall it's probably similar to Toronto, which is to say a tad higher than NYC.

In terms of employment, BH I've been very lucky to be able to keep my job abroad and work remotely. From what I understand, if you work in tech (which BH, I do), salaries are extremely competitive and similar to the US. Law/accounting apparently salaries aren't competitive. My wife is in education and honestly we are just looking to break even on costs associated with her working.

But in general, people live a simple lifestyle here. Not that everyone is a parush, it's just the way of life.

We could not be happier, BH.

Re: How hard is it financially to make it in Israel? Either way, don't think this thread is about having access to watermelon in the winter. The gashmius is obviously better in America.

Re: How hard is it financially to make it in Israel?
that ;D
I don't think that's true. I think there are other factors involved, but we can leave that for another day.

This thread is too funny.
If you need access to every cut of meat at cheap prices or sushi will decide where you are going to live, then yeah, Israel is not for you. (Funny they just yesterday my Israeli friends were making fun of Americans about sushi). But it's not the way it was 20 years ago. You won't suffer from lack of access to things. Is it frustrating that LED bulbs die a few months after installing them? Yes, but I choose not to let that bother me.

If you want to be מקיים מצות ישוב הארץ, live in the land אשר תמיד עיני ה' אלוקיך בה, in the Jewish Homeland, throw your lot in with the destiny of the Jewish people, in communities where רוחניות is the main goal, that are built around תורה and יראת שמים and are willing to compromise on some creature comforts to do it, then you can have the discussion in this thread. Are there challenges? For sure. But it's largely a question of attitude.

If anyone is serious about this and want to discuss תכלית, feel free to PM me and we can set up a time to discuss. Or if you want to come check it out and need accommodations RBS A for shabbos, just drop me a line.

Re: How hard is it financially to make it in Israel?
You're making a religious argument to negate the realities of how hard it is to make it in Israel. Yishuv Eretz Yisrael is hard. Everyone agrees. But you cant say come here and give up creature comforts because its the right thing to do. Thats not an attitude issue .Thats a practical reality issue.
I totally disagree. When people talk about challenges and how hard it is to make it, it's not what vegetables you can buy and which cuts of meat are available. Those things, if you think the value of Yishuv Haaretz is important are just noise. The difficulty is socio-economic adjustment. Getting used to the culture. Integrating your kids. Making a parnassah. Those are real issues. Whether there is Shallot's level sushi, not so much.

Re: One day or two
Maybe yes, and maybe not. Let's hear some non-Lubavitchers chime in on this one, if you ask your Rov in the US whether you need to keep one day or two in EY, does he give you a psak, or does he send you to ask a Rov in EY?
So that's your issue? The semantics? So let's just call it shorter rather than abbreviated.
I don't recall ever having quoted the Chasam Sofer.
No, my issue is with your condescending, holier than thou attitude with the unwillingness or inability to see something from any other viewpoint that your version of your Rebbe.

You present as fact in this thread that there will be two days yuntif laasid lavo. I assume your Rebbe said this at some point? Was it a recurring theme in his teachings? Is it printed somewhere? Is it based on any mekoros?
