Re: Silent Killer
Yet another stereotype. We have no issue asking for help if we feel we need it.
There is a tremendous stigma involved with drug abuse in our communities. The fact is that it goes on everywhere and it is not talked about. For example I know that in one particular shul there are at least 9 different people (that I know of) that have siblings who have seeked out help for addiction. All these 9 are friends and not one of them knows about the other. I guarantee you there are more. None of these people are showing up on "stats".

Just because you dont know about it doesnt mean its not going on. If people began the conversation, we would realize that no family hasnt been affected by this in one way or the other.

Re: Silent Killer All this talk of above or below the national average is really ridiculous and completely ignoring the topic at hand.

In other words welcome to DDF.

@Emkay no matter what stats you bring, people will always say we are more insular than the world and therefore no stats will matter.

What percentage would you think of people are not aware of the health risks when they start using drugs?

Re: Silent Killer

I think a high percentage are not fully aware.
If you ask someone smoking their first joint if heroin is bad they will of course know that it is, yet they have no understanding that they just took the first step towards that deadly addiction.
I remember speaking to someone who told me he does everything except opiates bc "that stuff is too dangerous" one week later he was tested and opiates were found in his system. I asked him I thought u don't do opiates and he answered me "when I'm f+%ked up I'll do anything"

Good question. I think the answer to the 1st questions is most parents would rather ther kids drink. 2nd questions. Pot
I would agree with you and IMHO most don't understand drugs and addictions is why they would say that.

Re: Silent Killer @hvaces42

If you don't get poetry than just say that, you are sounding really silly to me.

It's a beautiful poem, and yes I love poetry so maybe I'm biased. The beauty is that is is open to interpretation and allows the reader to take it to heart or not depending on how they read it and understand it, it can be much more powerful than a simply stated idea.

Before I give my interpretation I just want to say that I don't understand how you can say words words words when the main call for action that you are suggesting here is education, and how exactly is education done? "Words words words."

Words are one of the most powerful forces in the world, you will never get anywhere without using them, insulting them doesn't sound very smart to me.

Anyway with that said the poem to me is coming from a girl who is living in a similar situation, the author had a tough childhood with no one to look up to. She is an adult now and can do what she wants, many of her friends from similar backgrounds take heroin and claim that it saved them and changed their life from miserable to wonderful. Yet she has held off the easy path and been working hard to avoid it.

Being that she never had a good role model to look up to she and her friends see heroin as a heroine that can take them out of their sad life and make them instantly happy.

After a few friends being killed from heroin she is realizing it's not time to blame the person or say how good a person they were, it's time to realize that heroin is no heroine at all but rather a filthy lying scumbag who just like an abusive husband, promises to give her the world but really all it does it destroy it.

I think for someone who was considering heroin this can be very educational and a good read.

Hope that makes some sense no time to look over what I wrote atm.

Re: Budapest Master Thread
Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but deciding between Budapest, Vienna & Prague, which place would be the best base for a few days of touring, in terms of Kosher food/hotels, pricing, things to do...
I'd vote for Budapest. I went to all three this summer and I had a great time by all of them, but I'd rank them as far as where I'd want to go back as first Budapest, then Prague then Vienna. Let me know if you have further questions about specifics etc.

ETA: Forget about among those 3 cities. Budapest may very well be the nicest city I've been to and I've been to many cities across 40 countries in the past year and a half. That, along with the fact that a gorgeous 5 star hotel can be had for under $150 a night, and there's great kosher food available, makes me not understand why Budapest is not a more talked about destination over here.

I went to Budapest 2 weeks ago, what in the Gehenim did you see there that fascinated you?
Did you check out the view across the river of Pest from the hills of Buda at night? May very well be the most beautiful/magnificent nighttime view I've seen.

Same 10% unless your registered as business then its 6% i think.
So $575 -12.9%+$0.30 is $10.58 profit before shipping, and shipping with insurance will cost you more than that. Sounds like a money loser to me.

Re: The School Crisis
My husband and I both work. We consider ourselves chassidish but we're not affiliated with any particular sect. We speak English and Yiddish in our home. We don't have movies or a TV, we both have smartphones + wifi. We're pretty middle class.

I'm not sure what typical means nowadays. I don't buy into the whole double life many MANY people have today where they are chassidish on the outside and barely shomer Shabbos on the inside. With my husband and I- what you see is what you get.

BYBP expected my 4 yr old to be able to write her own name, draw shapes, identify all aleph bet and alphabet.
Gan Yisroel said no uncle Moishy/yeshivah boys choir/smartphones w/o filter
Bais Yaakov of B said no chalav stam (not that it matters. They didn't want us anyway. We don't fit their type)
Munkatch had no reason with their rejection
Satmar said no radio (yes. Apparently were in the 50's)
Both bobavs said no space
Sora schner, Bais shufra Miriam, BYA, prospect park, yeshiva of B, yeshiva of FB, and a few others never responded to my application despite many calls
BY d'rav Meir called us for an interview but I heard from a few people that they (like vien) are way too posh and would never take us. So we didn't even bother running after them
BY18 has a 3 year waiting list and only accepts siblings

Need I go on?
Sorry for speaking bluntly but either wise up & play the game like everyone else  does or move out of BP

Zero Card DoC has a good summary.

Functions like debit it that you add funds and then use the card. Apparently won't work as debit where transactions require debit though.
Basically 0-25K 1%
25-50k 1.5%
50-100k 2%
100k+ 3%

Early sign ups get 1.5%, and if you share on facebook you get to 2%. Get 3 referrals and you get 3. I'll start a conga line in the wiki for folks to share referrals (if the mods are OK with it)

Let's put this to rest. You don't know what you're talking about as far as actual facts on the ground.
Yes, you linked a few studies that are tangentially related. But due to the complexity and insularity of the community, your concerns are so minor, they pale in the face of the clear and present danger of dismissing the problem as almost not applicable to us.

Re: Disturbing ad on Vosizneias
Before I get jumped all over on a Friday I am not saying this "guy" is legit. What I am saying is Forex trading is legit and I have used it in the past to lock in massive profits (no risk hedging). If you are a gambler you are better betting with them (flip a coin) then playing black or red on roulette in Vegas.
This is not Forex trading. You cannot buy or sell Forex with these sites. They use the name Forex specifically in order to deceive people into thinking they are investing in Forex which they are not!

What they do is let you bet whether a currency will go up or down and you supposedly win if the currency moves in the expected direction. The money never leaves the company! Ever! Unlike a risky but real Forex trade that involves buying a currency, hoping it will go up or down and subsequently selling that currency for a profit or loss, nothing is bought or sold here. You are merely betting on the direction the currency will move: up or down. If you are wrong, you "lose" the money and the company keeps it. If you were right, you "win" and are supposed to get the "profit" on your investment.
This is no different than betting hundreds or thousands of dollars on the flip of a coin.

Someone will ask: "so how is this different then a Casino where you can make or lose money?" The difference is twofold. First of all, with a Casino, the risk is clear. Anyone that walks into a Casino knows there is a high chance they will lose their money. With these "companies", they do everything they can to hide the risk and pretend they are an "investment". No one tells their friend or wife "I am investing $1000 in casino gambling" but over here were you are doing the same thing, no one will tell you that your  "investment" is pure gambling. Second, in a Casino no one coerces you to come in and gamble away your money and if you lose, they don't pressure you to gamble more money. With these "companies", ounce you put in a small amount of money, they pressure you and hard sell you to add more and more money to your initial "investment" and try to get you to leverage yourself which increases the risk exponentially all while hiding the risks and selling you dreams of huge profits. When you lose money, they try very hard to get you to double down on your investment and "invest" even more money.

I haven't even touched on the fact that with a lot of these "companies" it is impossible to get your money out even if you "win". They are registered in remote countries, have no psychical address or offices and you can never pin them down to get the money. Also, most of these trading platforms are rigged and don't really represent what happens in the real Forex world.
