I am honestly SO not bothered at all by "alternative facts." I saw the clip where she said it. They were arguing about statistics. Statistics are the most deceptively weak form of argument precisely because they sound so solid but say so little. She was basically saying, "You can quote your numbers, and I am sure you have your sources, but we have different numbers." That, to me, is totally valid. This is so true, I never thought I could tolerate trump, let alone cheer for him, but the way the media and liberals are reacting to his presidency make it impossible not to.

Huh? I don't see any problem with that argument. That's a classic misperception of people who are against gay marriage. As an orthodox jew I believe God doesn't want us to engage in homesexual activity but I don't judge nor treat the gay PERSON any less than a straight person. I certainly wouldn't refuse to let him buy flowers. However to participate in (and evermore so beautify)  a CELEBRATION  of something that I believe God doesn't want done is something I am not able to do.
Is that such a hard distinction to hear?

As in my above example, a shliach's success is not due to his public speaking, writing or counseling acumen. When I was 14 years old on mivtzoim and a man sought my counsel on his failing business, troubled familial relationships and more, he obviously wasn't seeking my advice, but he was benefiting from my compassion. Not that I'm an especially kind personality, just that I happened to be the Rebbe's shliach to that person in that moment. And I did help him out, otherwise why would he keep seeking my counsel every week? My age, skills and knowledge had nothing to do with it, any comfort I brought to that Jew was with the power vested in me by the Rebbe.

In many ways, shluchim are like audacious 14 year old know nothing kids. They are the Rebbe's men on the spot. Sure one might be able to deliver a pilpul, another a punchline, and yet another might be able to explain bilti baal gvul without illustrations. But the power they have to effect the world in the grand way they do comes from the Rebbe, and no amount of vocational training will change that.
   
By the way, there are some yeshivas that do offer such classes. In fact, a relative of mine told me of a public speaking class in which they had to deliver a speech based on the techniques and skills learned in the class. He gave a speech which had all the bochurim laughing and engaged, but "failed" (I don't believe the class counted for anything) and upset the instructor who complained he didn't use the specific formula he had taught.

Sure, each school could use improvement in any number of areas, just as that public speaking teacher probably wasn't the best guy for the job. But to say that a yeshivah that only teaches bochurim nigleh and chassidus without vocational instruction is not preparing them for shlichus is like saying a medical school that only teaches medicine without communication studies isn't preparing students to become doctors.

that same unadulterated לימוד תורה (preferably על טהרת הקודש) which prepares one so well for a life of shlichus, by imparting a knowledge and appreciation for hashem, his torah, and the awareness that אין עוד מלבדו, also happens to be a great prep for a life of a chassidisher balebos (perhaps even more so...), and for that matter, the best prep for a frum jewish life at all...

and isn't that the 'core' of what shlichus should be about anyway?

You're right. This is the scandal of the century. If the person would've cared for health reasons it would've been a perfectly reasonable request, albeit possibly a bit overly cautious, but being as there were religion intentions behind the request, off to the guillotine he goes. This is an emergency situation that demands an immediate outcry. It's a good thing it didn't wait till Friday. The world may not have survived till then. I hope everybody responds immediately with their experiences with religious fanatics like the one in the OP for the sake of societies continuation, and properly appreciates the urgency of the situation.

Lots of good blogs have vanished and many more will in the next couple of years as the walls continue to close in.

I have no idea how someone could think that asking people to unblock ads is worse than a handout. You're not paying a membership fee for reading a site or posting on a forums, nor does it cost you a dime to unblock ads. Obviously when the ads look like Times Sq or cover your whole screen, they don't deserve to be unblocked, but otherwise what exactly is the issue?

The costs to maintain a large website and forum with big traffic spikes are truly massive. Income sources are incredibly fickle and precarious and I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Back when we had direct relationships with the banks there was no need for adsense, but there is clearly a need to diversify income streams.

Yes, BH the site provides a good living for my family and JJs family, but if it stopped being profitable, then yes, it would close.

I'm not asking for donations, just think twice before you decide to deprive a site that you use and enjoy of a revenue stream.

I'm not sure I understand the logic to this "all or nothing" approach. Frankly, it sounds very bitter.

When your family celebrates your birthday, do you demand that they celebrate everyone in the world who has a birthday on the same day? Maybe we shouldn't celebrate engagement parties and weddings because your friends are caught up in the shidduch crisis?

This is a man that gave a tremendous amount to Jewish establishments around the world with an open heart. Nobody that knows him well has a bad word to say about him. He was given an unjust sentence and they felt the need to advocate on his behalf and did so for years and years to no avail. He finally got out and they are celebrating.

Sure, other people have been unjustly imprisoned, but why and how does that affect this story?

This is 100% accurate.
@shaulyaakov has absolutely no idea how hiring works in the real world.
If the person has valid documents, you have to hire them even if you know in your heart of hearts that they're illegal.
Otherwise you get sued for discrimination. And trust me they all find a way to get valid docs.

Look carefully at ads, many do not advertise hashgocha. They advertise guest speakers, and people assume that if rabbi X eats there so can I. But does rabbi X actually eat there?

Even with the testimony of the minors (which was fraught with contradictions and many issues) he was cleared. Because he did nothing wrong (in that regard). Do people lose respect for gedolim that agree to stuff like this? Or is it a, they just don't know science how the world works outside torah type thing, but for torah related stuff they are still a gadol?
