Re: Shlichus Addiction?
I disagree with this. Preparation for shlichus is limud haTorah. It's not just my opinion, it's something I've heard from many shluchim including Berel Lazar, who you might think would have benefited from some sort of communications or politics class.

To be sure, the Rebbe demanded shluchim use their talents and skills, and they should certainly hone those skills and improve them. But their job is to be mekabel pnei Moshiach tzidkeinu by being meifitz chassidus and getting yidden to do mitzvos. Their job is not to deliver speeches, give invocations, or write editorials. Sure, those are important tools, but they are only tools with which to impart all the knowledge they picked up in their years in yeshivah.

As in my above example, a shliach's success is not due to his public speaking, writing or counseling acumen. When I was 14 years old on mivtzoim and a man sought my counsel on his failing business, troubled familial relationships and more, he obviously wasn't seeking my advice, but he was benefiting from my compassion. Not that I'm an especially kind personality, just that I happened to be the Rebbe's shliach to that person in that moment. And I did help him out, otherwise why would he keep seeking my counsel every week? My age, skills and knowledge had nothing to do with it, any comfort I brought to that Jew was with the power vested in me by the Rebbe.

In many ways, shluchim are like audacious 14 year old know nothing kids. They are the Rebbe's men on the spot. Sure one might be able to deliver a pilpul, another a punchline, and yet another might be able to explain bilti baal gvul without illustrations. But the power they have to effect the world in the grand way they do comes from the Rebbe, and no amount of vocational training will change that.

By the way, there are some yeshivas that do offer such classes. In fact, a relative of mine told me of a public speaking class in which they had to deliver a speech based on the techniques and skills learned in the class. He gave a speech which had all the bochurim laughing and engaged, but "failed" (I don't believe the class counted for anything) and upset the instructor who complained he didn't use the specific formula he had taught.

Sure, each school could use improvement in any number of areas, just as that public speaking teacher probably wasn't the best guy for the job. But to say that a yeshivah that only teaches bochurim nigleh and chassidus without vocational instruction is not preparing them for shlichus is like saying a medical school that only teaches medicine without communication studies isn't preparing students to become doctors.
Spot on!
and whaddaya know?
that same unadulterated לימוד תורה (preferably על טהרת הקודש) which prepares one so well for a life of shlichus, by imparting a knowledge and appreciation for hashem, his torah, and the awareness that אין עוד מלבדו, also happens to be a great prep for a life of a chassidisher balebos (perhaps even more so...), and for that matter, the best prep for a frum jewish life at all...

and isn't that the 'core' of what shlichus should be about anyway?

Re: חסיד שוטה
This cant wait until Friday and maybe we can smoke out JTZ in his new incarnation...

So someone close to me working in a doctor's office taking blood places a tourniquet on the young to middle age chusid's arm and feels for a vein. His immediate response is dont touch me, put on gloves.

This has happened multiple times now in various different forms but same scenario. Can someone please explain how gloves make it more מותר for this שוטה?

Feel free to contribute youre own story.
You're right. This is the scandal of the century. If the person would've cared for health reasons it would've been a perfectly reasonable request, albeit possibly a bit overly cautious, but being as there were religion intentions behind the request, off to the guillotine he goes. This is an emergency situation that demands an immediate outcry. It's a good thing it didn't wait till Friday. The world may not have survived till then. I hope everybody responds immediately with their experiences with religious fanatics like the one in the OP for the sake of societies continuation, and properly appreciates the urgency of the situation.

Re: Ads on DDMS Friday popcorn in the house!

Lots of good blogs have vanished and many more will in the next couple of years as the walls continue to close in.

I have no idea how someone could think that asking people to unblock ads is worse than a handout. You're not paying a membership fee for reading a site or posting on a forums, nor does it cost you a dime to unblock ads. Obviously when the ads look like Times Sq or cover your whole screen, they don't deserve to be unblocked, but otherwise what exactly is the issue?

The costs to maintain a large website and forum with big traffic spikes are truly massive. Income sources are incredibly fickle and precarious and I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Back when we had direct relationships with the banks there was no need for adsense, but there is clearly a need to diversify income streams.

Yes, BH the site provides a good living for my family and JJs family, but if it stopped being profitable, then yes, it would close.

I'm not asking for donations, just think twice before you decide to deprive a site that you use and enjoy of a revenue stream.

Short version; Yeshiva didn't provide enough toilet paper. A bochur decided that since it's the yeshiva's responsibility he is not going to buy his own, and if there isn't enough he won't use...

Moral of the story, he's 100% right but who was smelled?

Re: Rubashkin freed from prison.
If you believe that people are sentenced unjustly, put your money where your mouth is an advocate on behalf of even 1 person serving an unjust amount of time for a non-violent drug offence. Here's a good place to start: https://www.alternet.org/drugs/15-people-rotting-prison-life-drug-crimes-didnt-hurt-anybody

I'm not sure I understand the logic to this "all or nothing" approach. Frankly, it sounds very bitter.

When your family celebrates your birthday, do you demand that they celebrate everyone in the world who has a birthday on the same day? Maybe we shouldn't celebrate engagement parties and weddings because your friends are caught up in the shidduch crisis?

This is a man that gave a tremendous amount to Jewish establishments around the world with an open heart. Nobody that knows him well has a bad word to say about him. He was given an unjust sentence and they felt the need to advocate on his behalf and did so for years and years to no avail. He finally got out and they are celebrating.

Sure, other people have been unjustly imprisoned, but why and how does that affect this story?

Re: Rubashkin freed from prison.
Liberals: Everyone illegal should be allowed to stay, and get govt benefits, and bring their family.  But, lock up anyone who employs them.

This is 100% accurate.
@shaulyaakov has absolutely no idea how hiring works in the real world.
If the person has valid documents, you have to hire them even if you know in your heart of hearts that they're illegal.
Otherwise you get sued for discrimination. And trust me they all find a way to get valid docs.

So Satmar worked harder then Chabad worked for him?
Sorry, but I'm going with Dershowitz' story over his.

Hamodia: "Can you discuss a little who were some of the people that you were most involved with in this effort?"

Dershowitz: "Sure. Most important was Rabbi Zvi Boyarsky, the head of the Aleph Institute; he organized a great many things."

People like Dershowitz, Boyarsky, and Kushner actually worked behind the scenes to make it happen. Even if they don't feel the need to gloat about it to the world and spread nasty L"H about others. For shame.

Sorry did not mean to ignore your post. You come up with valid points. I am glad you posted for everyone to see that there were children working at this plant and according to you at all these plants. The thing is I don't care when it comes to children. That is not just about this individual. I would say the exact same thing if it was the Pope. It is not my job to come up with a solution and I am not going to try.
No one denied there were underage workers there. It's a strawman that *you* created and beat down. Saying you would feel the same if it was the pope says nothing about agri's actions, it's just empty moral grandstanding on your part which has no bearing on Rubashkin.

Even with the testimony of the minors (which was fraught with contradictions and many issues) he was cleared. Because he did nothing wrong (in that regard). You thinking that you're "all about the kids" without even a semblance of a clue how anyone should solve the problem doesn't make anyone else guilty, it just makes you feel good about yourself.

Re: Vaccine Discussion Master Thread
Dear Friends,
B’siyata D’shmaya we have formed The Vaccine Coalition, a Coalition of Non-Vaccinating Parents in Lakewood, New Jersey.
This coalition was founded by R’ Malkiel Kotler shlit”a, R’ Shmuel Meir Katz shlit”a and R’ Refael Szmerla shlit”a, and it aims to address the current pressing issue of schools rejecting or dismissing non-vaccinated children. It will also be available to help non-vaccinating parents in Lakewood in any area we feel we can, as well as to provide support of ‘strength in numbers’ to pro-vaccine choice Lakewood families.
This coalition depends on a collective voice and will not be launched until we reach a minimum of 250 families. If you live in Lakewood and have made a decision not to vaccinate your children, we encourage you to please take a few moments to sign up to join the coalition, for your benefit, and for the benefit of all other Lakewood families like yourselves.
By joining the coalition you agree to have your name and personal information added to our private database. Your information will never be released to a third party without your permission. If the coalition should find it absolutely necessary to release your name in the course of assisting it's members you may receive an email requesting your permission.  Any such instance will be authorized by the Rosh Hayeshiva R’ Malkiel Kotler shlit”a beforehand.
The success of this endeavor is contingent on enlisting as many non-vaccinating families as possible. Please take the time to reach out to your friends and family who don’t vaccinate and encourage them to join.

To join, please visit www.vaccinecoalition.org. Alternatively you can join by emailing vaccinecoalition@gmail.com or call/ text 732-806-7739
Do people lose respect for gedolim that agree to stuff like this? Or is it a, they just don't know science how the world works outside torah type thing, but for torah related stuff they are still a gadol?

Research yeshiva statistics (as well as all schools) for students who attended prior to 1980, their ability to learn, as well as their behavior.
As oppose to היינטיגע צייטען with kids who are loaders up with stuff.
There are a million things that changed, why do you believe this supposed correlation is the cause? Why not go to more likely possibilities like screen time or eating organic food?

Re: Interesting Articles... This morning my local grocery store ran out of milk. I issued the following statement:

Klal Yisrael is facing a great challenge today - the anti-semitism we have faced and the oppression we are facing now all stems from an anti Semitic comment made by the store owner, <Name redacted> after Yehuda57  received assurances there would be milk from the manager, <name redacted>. After the assurance was given, he said, "He must not have seen our stock fridge." It is times like this, that Klal Yisrael needs to unite for social justice against corruption and the enemies of the Jewish people. We ARE moving forward with breakfast and have alternative almond milk. Additional alternative milk is being obtained from the grocery store across the street which Yehuda57 was too lazy to guy buy initially. We are asking all guests to come and take part in the breakfast in protest of the injustice that has come upon us. If not now, when? When the Jewish people forgo their doubts and stand up for truth - HaShem is with them. We are Am Yisrael - and it is moments like these that define who we are as a people. All aspects of the breakfast are in place and will move forward as planned - the only thing we are missing is your presence here, and your support. There are already 100 people+ here that are taking a stand - will you be part of this cause? We need YOU and the breakfast will go on with you. Three holy tzaddikim in our time have all urged us to go forward with this event - Come now- the cereal will be here as planned, all services and all acts will take place as planned. COME- they can try to hurt the few, but they cannot the many. We have overwhelming support and many more people are coming now then ever before to stand up for our right to celebrate our love for G-d. Stay alert to our posts - we will keep you updated.

How is a hashkafa that equates serving meat with serving traifos "essentially harmless"

And that is just an example from the part of the article they put online which is the only part I read.

The larger issue is the fact that they (and many other organizations) hide behind nameless "Rabbinic boards". If you aren't willing to stand behind your "supervision" it is completely meaningless.

Like “approved by noted mechanchos”. Meaningless.
