Re: Old Tech Or New Tech, Choose One.
Alright, I’ll bite. Apple and Tesla both:

Are aspirational brands
Dominated their market early, though didnt invent them
Do not compete on price but rather try to differentiate themselves from a crowded marketplace by virtue alone
Have very high brand recognition and loyalty
Charge a premium for their products because of their advantages and brand power
Have messaging and decisions that point to a greater good, not just their bottom line

A few off the top of my head, along with the ones listed previously.
Would love to hear the counterarguments.

LOL these aspects have ZERO to do with anything @Dan is discussing

And how do any of those similarities show any kind of double standard wrt Dan's thoughts about Samsung?

This is precisely what I was saying. It's not that you don't have good points, you have plenty of thoughtful insights, and you express them well. But you undermine them with asinine, disingenuous claims.

Re: Old Tech Or New Tech, Choose One.
Again, to summarize:

Dan: blasts Samsung for moving on from old, outdated tech.
Also Dan: acquires new tech (Tesla) whose entire premise is moving on from old, outdated tech.

We got sidetracked on me comparing Tesla to Apple. Pretend I never brought up Apple.
I realized that was a mistake on my part when I triggered the group-think hive here that worships Android and would hate to be considered remotely connected to Apple. I lost my point as soon as I did that.
While I thank you for the compliment (hard to come by on an Internet forum) I would much rather you present thoughtful insights of your own to carry your side of the discussion.

Calling names is easy. Backing yourself up may prove to be more of a challenge.
I use a flip phone 95% of the time and have no horse in the smartphone race, and I also never drove or even rode in a Tesla, but you are totally missing the boat on what Dan is saying. One is taking options away from you while the other is giving them to you.

You are as likely to get pregnant from getting the vaccine as you are to get COVID

Well that clinches it. I was worried about the 5g chips, seizures, Communism, and autism, but was still planning on getting vaccinated. But pregnancy? זאת לא.

Re: Tweets, Pictures, And Videos That Are Coronavirus Related
While some have been denying it all along, this very clearly shows covid=politics.

No. COVID - like abortions - is a life and death issue that’s been politicized. On both issues the politics and policy-making/leadership affects the outcomes/sentiments, but absent the politics they are still very much issues of life and death.

Well, compared to the besomim from last week, this is pretty good stuff!

In all seriousness, I heard that the stores were all sold out of besomim at the beginning of corona, before anyone figured out why they couldn't smell their besomim.

Re: Lakewood covid cases
But are any of them serious cases?
I'm not "in the know", but what I do know is that in a town of tens of thousands there are so few serious cases...
Define “so few”? There are dozens *currently* in the hospital in serious condition. 3 people died yesterday. That’s not enough for you to take something seriously?

Let alone the fact that we’ve been here and done this time and time again- it’s not about what you’ve seen until now, it’s about what next week will bring..

I don’t know what you call serious, but my brother in law was laid up for 2 weeks, too sick to turn over in bed. His experience isn’t uncommon, and he’s 30.

Seriously is defined the same way as serious surgery. Any surgery you are getting is a serious one. If it's no one you know, it's not a serious procedure.

Re: Lakewood covid cases
But at what cost?
Most of the city has immunity.
Should an entire city of 100,000 people be shut down indefinitely - now that so many people have immunity?
Are you aware of the terrible price we have paid in school dropouts (boys & girls), divorces, substance abuse, domestic abuse, loss of education, etc.?
Big decisions like these need to be made by responsible & knowledgeable people, not hotheads who aren't aware of the full picture.
Like I said, I strongly supported the lockdown Pesach time and kept all the rules 100% - but it's a new situation now.
We can't fight today's battles with yesterday's weapons.
Back to the full lockdown vs zero precaution argument. We've come full circle.

Yay! I missed this debate. We can't possibly recognize that there's serious illness in our community without invoking it. "Hashem Yerachaim! Tone down weddings?! People became drug addicts from the lockdown! How can you be so callous?"

The Shalom Challenge There was a thread which ran in this forum about whether people felt that there was bullying or intolerance of views related to COVID issues.

After many contentious posts, the Mods deleted the thread which was probably the right decision.

Coincidentally, the Chafetz Chaim Heritage Foundation stared a new program today called the Shalom Challenge with a motto

Re: ISRAEL AIRPORT CLOSING ON MONDAY!
I fully respect anyone that wears a mask, but I question those that do it part-time. Case-in-point, I was at a siyum Sefer Torah yesterday, where one of the family members was going around masked most of the time (he's from OOT), yet for a certain period he removed his mask (while still being in the same crowded indoor room). I didn't ask him (though I would if I would have a private moment with him) - ממה נפשך?

Does everyone always drive with a seat belt? Does everyone always boat with a life jacket? It’s a safety precaution and some usage is better than no usage.

Re: Random Posts
I think a judge should sentence Andrew Cuomo to a prison sentence in which he must spend hours every day rewatching his corona briefings and read his book cover to cover daily.

You kidding? If Achashveirosh asked Cuomo, "mah laasos baish..." Cuomo would think it must be him and say, "Read me my book cover to cover on repeat, breaking only to show me clips of my appearances on TV."

The real punishment would then be for the king to reply:

"Great, now go and do that for de Blasio."

Re: When will the current wave peak in the US?
7 day avg is between 1100-1200 depending on today's final numbers. It is increasing steadily, and deaths lag 3-4 weeks behind cases. We'll probably hit 350k by Jan 1, and 500k sometime before Valentine's Day. I don't think we'll see 300k cases/day, though. I think we top out at around 250k for a couple of weeks in the beginning/mid Dec, with numbers starting to come down before the 25th.
We haven't peaked yet, but I think we'll peak a little before Xmas. I think we'll top out at a week or two of 250k cases a day. The deaths and hospitalizations will unfortunately take more time to peak, with death counts only starting to go back down in mid Feb.

Pretty close on the cases, other than the 2 week post-Xmas hiccup. Deaths are spot on, so far. Yay me.

Re: When he comes back healthy, under which username will he appear??!!
Glad to hear! Thankfully, most of the Kool-aid has been moved to a dedicated politics board, so you can just ignore that board if you need.

On that note, maybe there should be a health disclaimer on the Politics Board. Paging legal...
Just heard back from legal, they said to add a disclaimer that the US Department of Health recommends limiting ones diet to 5 servings of popcorn and 2 servings of kool-aid* per week.

*In recent studies kool-aid has been shown to have a direct link to increased appetite and intake of crow.

Am I the only one wondering if Rav Chaim's family knows what the NYT is? It's clear from the article that the author entered the house with permission, along with a staff photographer, to observe Rav Chaim and also interview his grandson. It's one thing if the NYT decided to write an anti-gadol article on their own, but for a family that made him unavailable for Bibi, maybe I'm out of the loop, but I would have expected them to slam the door on an American newspaper (especially the Times) even harder.

Re: BobTeam Edelman / 2022 Olympics thread
+1
I've been thinking the same.
Hope all is ok!

I'm very sorry that the last few weeks haven't had an update. Things have been harder than I thought they'd get to.

We had a couple of articles come out about the team. One in the New York Times that focused on the brain injury aspects of things and one in algemeiner which was quite nice.  The team has grown by leaps and bounds and gets faster every day. We are making huge progress and it's in many ways beyond what I thought I could see. I'm very proud of that.

Things get difficult on the road, but here things have just been mentally very tough. Our (my) bank account hit absolute zero and the season's only half over, which is obviously a source of stress but the biggest source has been managing the team. Depression has been something I have dealt with for 19 years--it's a life's mission of mine to talk to kids about how it motivates me, but it can make things really tough and in this circumstance it has. Nonetheless it hasn't actually impeded development, probably the opposite. But it burns the internal candle quite fast, and thankfully Israel and the mission is the oil that replenishes.

The Olympics require an immense, 24/7/365 dedication to a goal that is generally unobtainable. Being a very average athlete, below average I might say by Olympic standards, the only way to ever get Israel to the Games has been to work harder than anyone else. No matter what my athletic shortcomings, knowing that I outworked even the world champions gave immense pleasure and confidence. But that takes a toll, and the toll becomes very difficult to keep on top of if not everyone is pulling their weight. At the moment that is the largest issue, and one which ultimately means the team makeup might not be the same in the Olympic season.  That's all I can really say at the moment, but it's been crushing.

The self doubt has set in as it usually does on an Olympic run. "I'm not where I could be, I could be better," are constant thoughts. Bobsled is hard. Grueling. Physically it's exhausting. But I firmly believe Israel will benefit and that this will happen. I know it strongly in my heart. I just need to work harder and get better. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is the result. There's no "almost made the" Olympic Games event.

Usually I'm far more cheerful, but that's where things have been and why I've been quite quiet recently. I honestly don't know how the team will financially make it through at the moment and that's a really tough one.

Thank you for caring and being supportive. It means the world.
AJ

P. S. Since the first crash, in the 75 or so runs since, not a single crash
