Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving?
January 01, 2018, 01:23:00 PM
Re: Rubashkin freed from prison.
I just got hit with a data overage on my cell phone plan. I am usually a very low data user.

Talking to Verizon now, seems like it was Dec. 21 - had to do with celebrations for SMR.

Email Dersh, maybe Trump can help

ETA: Also call Make a wish, maybe there's a kid can write a letter.

ETA: might want to check your kidneys

Re: Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving?
That's what scares me.
Nobody could care less right now. OOT is nice like that.
We can only start to understand this problem when we understand why people are so scares to send their kids to school where a parent might wear different colored shirt, or have a longer sheital than their own mother wears.
Or where a women drives when they don't.
Etc etc.

Re: Would you have been better off if you never found DDF? Pretty much supported my family with MS/CC apps for a few years until I finished school and started a real job.

Just a lesson on how Hashem main gig at the time was Redbird. I had 13 cards and would buy prepaids for 5% CB and load 65k (5k x13) a month at Target. At 1% cost I netted around $2,600 a month. That together with other MS (and my wife's small income) we got by. Literally the very day I started my job, Target stopped allowing debit loads on Redbirds effectively ending the gig.

Re: free books for kids
So thankful that I live in 2018, so I do not have to deal with these ridiculous issues.
A. No need to have kids in 2018.
B. No need to get books in 2018, all online, kindle etc.
C. Judaism is overrated, no need for it in 2018.
D. No need for free stuff due to Trumps tax plan for 2018 you can pay retail for books.
E. No need to read to kids in 2018, that's what tablet time is for.

Re: Signal Jammer Great way to stop ppl from going to shul.

Re: Signal Jammer
Probably not. Some of it will probably involve the Rov hounding repeat offenders.

Just want to point out that blocking signals doesn't mean they won't be able to use their phones at all. It'll eliminate the noise perhaps, and some people don't do much on their phones that doesn't involve internet connectivity - but it's not a full solution. The only full solution is not to have it in shul at all.

There's a guy I see in shul every so often that davens shmona esrai in a minute or two, and then sits down and plays some sort of candy crush type of game. And this wasn't a one time occurrence.
I'm pretty sure Reb Levi Yitzchok would have something to say about that...

If someone's psak says not to sit next to a woman under any circumstances, he really needs to limit flying to almost never. It means being ready to ask politely once, and if not forthcoming to walk off the plane and forfeit the tickets.

Re: Gentlemen: Charge your shavers! Once a Lag B'Omer celebration was being held in Jerusalem. Several yeshivah students from overseas joined the gathering. They had grown beards during the Counting of the Omer, but had removed them on Lag B'Omer. The Gaon, Rabbi Yeshaya Osher Zelig Margolis of Jerusalem, told them: "Throughout the days of the Omer, you restrained yourselves from removing your beards. Today, on the day of Rabbi Shimon's celebration, you too are joining in the rejoicing. But how are you are marking his holy day? By trampling on his words. This recalls the words of the Megilah: 'Would you assault the queen while I'm at home?!'" My words bore fruit and the students resolved never to touch their beards.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai taught (Zohar, Vol. III, p. 130b): "Woe to those who extend their hands against the precious, sublime beard."

The Chafetz Chayim writes: "Removing one's beard (even with scissors) brings about destruction and blemishes [in the spiritual worlds] Above and removes the image of G-d [Tzelem Elokim] from one's face. By doing so, one uproots the channels of holiness from Above... as explained in the holy Zohar and the works of the Kabbalists.... Accordingly, any person with a sensitive heart should be in dread of this severe and bitter sin. If he transgressed, he should hurry to repent and should not pay attention to his foolish friends whose evil inclinations have overpowered their minds" (The Chofetz Chaim in his Kuntres Tiferes Adam, Introduction, sec. 1; ch. 10).

If DD "hated" El Al they wouldn't have spent hours on the phone explaining exactly what to improve, change, and how to actually make money like some US airlines.

They have so much potential and seeing them shooting themselves in the foot makes it so much worse, being that they are Israel's airline.

Re: Amex 2014 Terms and Conditions Here are some sevaras I'm thinking, although again, haven't really looked into this and many here have probably thought about it more than me.

1. CB, points on generic spend, seem akin to a rebate, which means you just paid less for the potatoes you were buying. Hard to see that as taxable.

2. Same with FF miles you get for flying. You just paid less for your flight.

3. IRS Announcement 2002-18 was about business travel. Your employer pays for your flight, and you get miles. If was like scenario 2, the employer would get the miles. So this is more like your employer giving you additional compensation in miles, but IRS was mochel it.

4. Points or miles you get from deposit bank accounts, seem most like interest income. Hard to see it as anything different.

5. MS from buying groups.  If you treat it as having paid less for potatoes, like under scenario 1, then your basis in the potatoes is less, and  you had a profit when you onsold it to the buying club guy.  So seems like either business income or short term gains (with various nafka minas).

6. MS from GCs. This is the weirdest one, because it seems irrational to say that your basis in a $500 GC is only $492. However, I can get past that weirdness, especially considering that you can trade GS below face value all over ebay.  So hagah atzmecha: If I buy a Target GC for $475, and then buy $500 worth of potatoes at Target, do I have income or gains of $25? That seems like an insane position to take.  But that's where the usual theories would seem to take us.  If you have a business, I would think very hard to argue that the money you are making wasn't made. But seems nuts that you have income everytime you buy a GC below face value and then use it.  At some point it may just come down to the optics.

These are just some boich sevaras--no idea how IRS thinks of this or what law is.

JJ1000's 10,000 Post Featuring: A day in the life of Dan, Giveaway, & More It's hard to imagine I joined DDF over 10 years ago, of course this was after I made the first comment on DDMS 14 years ago and joining ctown forums after that.

I really can't begin to count the memories I have here on DDF, one that comes ot mind is the first major DO where @Dan @AsherO @BrooklynCPA @Mikeoracle @Smirk @MOSES @whYME @yare @Avid Reader @Chachem Balaileh @mancunian @yid @SuperFlyer all had an amazing time.

Picture of the DO:

Back at that DO no one really knew who I was, besides that I was the guy who started the jokes thread, which I must say was one of my finest additions to DDF ;)

Since that DO I have made countless friends and received countless favors from DDF members, who truly are like family.

Some that come to mind.

@rots5 and @moish putting me up in Israel while @moishebatchy offered my friends and I extra sheets for our stay, this was of course when we went with the first El AL glitch tickets. @SamKey For hooking up his apartment for Pesach and @Emkay for some awesome kugel, that I am pretty sure had an ok hechsher. @Chaikel for setting up a sweet Jamaican honeymoon.

@steve2 and the fights other new comers used to love to pick like @AJK when he was a total troll back in the day and @HelpMe who IMO had no idea what he fell into when he got here, and I'd like to think was very happy that he stayed.

@TimT is always there to offer some advice and is obviously the best searcher on DDF, @AsherO and @aussiebochur used to be that helpful guy until he got too busy for us ;)

Of course there was @JEWDA who it's still hard to believe isn't here anymore, going to his widows house the day after my Lchaim/vort with my then fiance will always be very special to me. The way DDF comes together when someone is in need (@SBS thread) is so heart touching it's hard to explain.

@mileagejunkie @Marco Polo @myi @YossieW @stooges44 @davidmal @Yaalili @B.D.Da'ehu @ben89 and of course @Davidthebest are my 100 HT club peeps, and have helped ignite the great deals we post every day to help tens of thousands of people save (and maybe spend) money every day. I really appreciate every deal that's sent to us and that's posted on DDF.

I couldn't possibly remember all of the countless nights I stayed up to argue with someone that was wrong about the most random things imaginable. @churnbabychurn @ExGingi @aygart @ChaimMoskowitz and of course many others can always be counted on for some good popcorn when it's needed. And @sky121 can always be counted on for a balanced and positive view on any subject.

Some dude coming along looking to sell a stinky old fish tank has drastically improved the trip reports and photography skills of DDF, hats off to you @Something Fishy.

@DH Data Recovery practically owned the tech deals on ddf at one point, and he @chevron and @txtmax4  are always good for a wine recommendation.

Wrigley softball DO with @SrulyS @Moes Tavern @Redbull3 @MosheD @EJB @chucksterace @Bentch @grodnoking @AJK @Yitzshpitz @Dan@Yodai Dooma @ShmulieCFS @JTZ

One day I may even meet @henche though that is likely IMPOSSIBLE.

Big shoutout to @BAHayman, @Eli, and @Suave for making DDMS/DDF able to run and be what it is today thanks to them!

The first DDF shidduch was super cool @Lou Bob @MC to many more, spending shabbos together in Aruba on the Hyatt Price Mistake was awesome.

Crazy to imagine there are over 300 members with 1,000+ posts so my apologies, I'm sure I missed many memories.

I made a thread asking what I should do for my 10,000 post, and I will try to do most of them below.

Enjoy :)
A typical day in the life of Dan:

Some names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

Dan wakes up from an amazing night's rest on his W Hotel mattress. and tell his Echo Dot which he got for free to turn on the Breville Coffee Maker plugged into his smart plug.

Get into hisNissan Altima and take the quick 2 minute drive to shachris.

After davening, @AJK texts Dan that AA has a Price Mistake to LA in F for $5, if they buys it in the airport and flies today. Naturally Dan just heads straight to the airport and boards the flight to LA. On the plane there is a dog next to him, which was strange at first until he realized it was just @meshugener flying in F as well.

In LAX Dan visits the United lounge, which he has free access to with his lifetime membership and his JMPRCC. He picks up his rental from Silver Car and heads to Tierra Sur for the Lunch DO.

In LA @Yehoshua @Cholentfresser @Yaalili @PlatinumGuy @yehuda @D93 @etech0 @ilherman and @David Smith all meet up for the DO.

All of a sudden Barto walks in and instinctively, the group makes a beeline for the door. But before they can bail, he stops them...And says he planned the AA Price Mistake in order to get a face to face with Dan after all these years.

Barto has realized after years of being the bad guy, he just wanted to hang out with the cool kids on DDF from the olden days like @Drago @Saver2000 @Cbs @Q274 @MarkS @aussiebochur , @chuchem and @myb821, he said even though it's @noturbizniss but he left his old job and as he was leaving he reinstated all the damage he's done over the years, returning millions of miles to their rightful owners.

Everyone was very happy and had drinks all around as well as
grilled to perfection.

After Lunch Dan drives back to the airport and rushes to catch his flight home as he realizes it is almost time for his UPS delivery. On the plane he uses the on board Wi-Fi to make some posts and read DDF (this is actually what takes up 18 hours of the day every day, besides shabbos).

He makes it home just in time to receive his UPS delivery of US Mint coins. He had set up delayed delivery back in 2009 and every day since then he has been receiving a $10k shipment of US Mint coins shipped via the UPS Method. To date this has netted a cool 30,000,000+ SPG points.

At the end of the day he reflect on life and remembers what is really important and what he is thankful for.

Now it's time to count to 10,000 and fall asleep.

(This is a fairly typical day)

Just some simple tricks for car rental status.

You can get free Sixt Platinum status when you sign up with this link. Once you confirm your email address you can login and instantly get your card online that shows you as Platinum.

Then match that status to National and hopefully get Executive elite, possibly Executive. (Can also apply here directly for executive)

Then email Hertz Simply enroll in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program then provide proof of your identity and proof of status with other car rental companies via email to

And apply for Enterprise Platinum here.

Avis you can try via social media or calling sometimes.

Fell free to add more matches in the comments.
A quick chazara of all my posts: Your attitude is what decides your mood, not what's going on. You can have a trip ruined if something goes wrong, or it can become one of the most memorable trips of your life. Roll with the punches. Always have a healthy dose of cynicism. Understand that someone with beliefs to the right of you or the left of you aren't wrong, just different, a rainbow would be pretty ugly with just one color. Enjoy life and always cherish what's most important to you, and try to keep that in mind every second of every day.

As a last note I'd like to do a small giveaway. just comment on this thread and I'll choose one winner to get a Google Home Mini and another winner to get the best card games IMO being Codenames and Monopoly Deal.

I can't thank DDF enough for giving me all the opportunities life has to offer, from making friends, traveling the world, to supporting my family, I couldn't do any of it without this truly amazing community.

Just to end off with a special thanks to Dan for starting it all and giving me the opportunity to grow the site and live the blessed life that I do.

Israel Bobsled/skeleton and parabobsled is recruiting! Hey guys!
It's coming closer to rosh hashana which means another winter sports season is soon upon us (most seasons open around motzei Sukkot.)
Israel Bobsled and skeleton is currently recruiting! If you're interested in getting back at your overly protective Jewish mother, or just like throwing caution to the wind and have an itch to represent the White and Blue, hit me up.  Since pyeongchang 2018 we have recruited 5 new athletes to the program in bobsled, parabobsled, male and female skeleton! Join us.

Edit: it is possible to compete as a shomer shabbos athlete. Most lower-tier competitions are held on Thursday/Friday or another 2-day pair, where you only need to do one of the races.

What is needed:
Parabobsled: nothing! Just a love of Israel. We'll teach you the rest.  Help Israel qualify for the 2022 Paralympic games!

Bobsled: ability to push something big, willingness to lose a few brain cells.

Skeleton: same as bobsled, but if you're into doing things solo, this is the sport for you.

What support do we have for you?
Unfortunately we can't provide any shekalim right now, we rely on fundraising.
You will come into a program with the major advantage of having the advice and remote coaching of an array of athletes who all love Israel. We've made the Olympics once, be our next Olympian!

Preferred skills are sprinting and weightlifting. If you don't think you can be an Olympic athlete or are looking for a part time commitment, we can set you up as well in international races with the goal of achieving what it is you're looking to achieve.

Re: RIP John McCain The definition of a hero
You probably already know what happened. In October of ’67 McCain was himself still a Young Voter and flying his 23rd Vietnam combat mission and his A-4 Skyhawk plane got shot down over Hanoi and he had to eject, which basically means setting off an explosive charge that blows your seat out of the plane, which ejection broke both McCain’s arms and one leg and gave him a concussion and he started falling out of the skies right over Hanoi. Try to imagine for a second how much this would hurt and how scared you’d be, three limbs broken and falling toward the enemy capital you just tried to bomb. His chute opened late and he landed hard in a little lake in a park right in the middle of downtown Hanoi, Imagine treading water with broken arms and trying to pull the life vest’s toggle with your teeth as a crowd of Vietnamese men swim out toward you (there’s film of this, somebody had a home – movie camera, and the N.V. government released it, though it’s grainy and McCain’s face is hard to see). The crowd pulled him out and then just about killed him. U.S. bomber pilots were especially hated, for obvious reasons. McCain got bayoneted in the groin; a soldier broke his shoulder apart with a rifle butt. Plus by this time his right knee was bent 90-degrees to the side with the bone sticking out. Try to imagine this. He finally got tossed on a jeep and taken five blocks to the infamous Hoa Lo prison – a.k.a. the “Hanoi Hilton,” of much movie fame – where they made him beg a week for a doctor and finally set a couple of the fractures without anesthetic and let two other fractures and the groin wound (imagine: groin wound) stay like they were. Then they threw him in a cell. Try for a moment to feel this. All the media profiles talk about how McCain still can’t lift his arms over his head to comb his hair, which is true. But try to imagine it at the time, yourself in his place, because it’s important. Think about how diametrically opposed to your own self-interest getting knifed in the balls and having fractures set without painkiller would be, and then about getting thrown in a cell to just lie there and hurt, which is what happened. He was delirious with pain for weeks, and his weight dropped to 100 pounds, and the other POWs were sure he would die; and then after a few months like that after his bones mostly knitted and he could sort of stand up they brought him in to the prison commandant’s office and offered to let him go. This is true. They said he could just leave. They had found out that McCain’s father was one of the top-ranking naval officers in the U.S. Armed Forces (which is true – both his father and grandfather were admirals), and the North Vietnamese wanted the PR coup of mercifully releasing his son, the baby-killer. McCain, 100 pounds and barely able to stand, refused, The U.S. military’s Code of Conduct for Prisoners of War apparently said that POWs had to be released in the order they were captured, and there were others who’d been in Hoa Lo a long time, and McCain refused to violate the Code. The commandant, not pleased, right there in the office had guards break his ribs, rebreak his arm, knock his teeth out. McCain still refused to leave without the other POWs. And so then he spent four more years in Hoa Lo like this, much of the time in solitary, in the dark, in a closet-sized box called a “punishment cell.” Maybe you’ve heard all this before; it’s been in umpteen different media profiles of McCain. But try to imagine that moment between getting offered early release and turning it down. Try to imagine it was you. Imagine how loudly your most basic, primal self-interest would have cried out to you in that moment, and all the ways you could rationalize accepting the offer. Can you hear it? It so, would you have refused to go? You simply can’t know for sure. None of us can. It’s hard even to imagine the pain and fear in that moment, much less know how you’d react.
