PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others Over the past few months many stories have come to my attention of people swiping for companies or people, and getting scammed to the tune of $100k+ each.

I'm not saying you can't offer to put something on your credit card for someone, but be smart. Even the most honest trustworthy people can hit a rough patch and be unable to pay back.

The specific stories I've been told were of out right scammers. Some had a great reputation, and were part of a community.

Bottom line - At the very least, consider swiping for someone an investment with risk. Don't put down more money than you can afford to lose. Even million dollar companies go under. Ask yourself, are you really willing to risk $20-50k and up for a few points?

If you believe you can trust someone, you should still have a hard limit in the range you can afford to lose, and don't go over it. The guy has truckloads of cash? Then let him prepay you, or put the money in escrow.

This is a very serious matter. Lives have been ruined. You've been warned.

Please don't PM for details. They won't be answered

Please (Make and) Post your Kiddush Hashem-Honesty Story In light of all the recent negative coverage of the frum community I thought its important to make an extra effort to make a kiddush Hashem- especially in all honesty related matters.

Sharing your Kiddush Hashem or honesty story is in itself a Kiddush Hashem- and you are encouraging others to do the same.

I will start with my little story which occurred this week:

I dropped my Keurig water container and some of the parts fell off. I couldn't figure out how to reassemble the parts so I called Keurig customer service and the rep said as a courtesy they will send me a new water reservoir for free. (Cost about $30 on amazon) She asked for my shipping address and I actually cringed a little when I specified Lakewood as my town.

She said it would take 7-10 business days to arrive but I wanted a coffee now :)  so when I hung up the phone I tried again and was able to figure out how to snap back the parts and my Keurig was back in service!

My initial thoughts were- great! I fixed it and I will also be getting a free backup in case it breaks again! Surely a huge company such as Keurig won't care, and at the time it was really broken- so totally legit!

But then I thought again about all that's going on and remembered cringing when I mentioned 08701. I said to myself even if legally and Al Pi Halacha I'm perfectly entitled to take the free water container, I will still make an extra effort to be 1000% honest and in addition though there's only the slimmest chance I will get the same rep, maybe somehow it will get noticed and I can make a Kiddush Hashem.

I called back to cancel the free part and lo and behold I got the same rep! She said I remember you and thanked me for reporting that I had fixed it myself- and yes, she did cancel the free part shipment- but I'm still very happy I took a small step toward impeccable honesty and making a kiddush Hashem.

I hope this will be one of many stories to come.

Re: Newark EWR Airport Parking Master Thread
Anyone know the current cheapest parking for Newark? Need to park for 10 days, old place I used to use on Groupon was around $60 after coupons, now it's $95. I've tried a couple online but all end up being over $100 with fees. I saw the post earlier about Extended Stay but I'd be arriving around 4am so would need a shuttle as well (though in theory if Uber from there was cheap, maybe that would be worthwhile).
Park in Elizabeth at an alternate side spot, I doubt the ticket is more than $35, Uber from the edge of Elizabeth to EWR is around $6 each way. We parked from Wed night to Tues morning in a Wed spot, but 10 days you’ll have to pay one ticket

Re: Rome Master Thread
The Pope of Rome was now in Abu Dhabi.  Greeted warmly by Dr Ahmad Al Tayyeb, who seeks the destruction of Israel. Why should a Jew be in the vatican of all places ?!?!?

Make sure not to go to Washington DC as I saw President Trump greeted warmly by Kim Jong Un who seeks the destruction of Israel.

Re: Ad Campaign for spreading awareness anti credit card swiping businesses!
Anyone who has leverage with any publication that publishes these ads should push them to refuse posting them. Removing them will be more helpful than publishing a counter ad once or twice.
Hard to tell them not to take $$$ for ads. I'd say if enough $ is raised, you can pay them to not accept the ads.

Re: Kavey El Hashem-Ein Keloykeinu. How come in every shul i'm always falling behind?
Like most sefardic minyanim.
I have long contended that the רבש"ע enjoys those better than the Ashkenazic ones.

And those who are in a rush leave early.
Here's what the Alter Rebbe writes:

The average person speaks around 150 words per minute but many can go much higher (auctioneers can do as much as 400 words per minute). How many words are in תחנון and אין כאלקינו ?

Re: Groupon: Personal Kvitel (prayer note) placed into the Kotel with Pic/Video
Can we back up here? What exactly is the problem with this?? Someone is offering a service of placing a note into the wall and offering to either take a picture or video to prove that he did it. What’s the problem?
There doesn't seem to be a problem, good for the guy behind this, let him make a few bucks.
If it's really meaningful for someone to have a note placed in the wall then so be it pay x amount for the kvitel.
Since an average person is not flying out to Israel to put a kvitel inside the wall, here you have a service which charges and places the note in the wall for you.
See no problem, noones forcing anyone to buy this, but to go and report and rat this guy out seems very sad, disappointing for someone to go and do that.
Unfortunate that someone would do such a thing, even if someone did report it why post it publicly? 😞

Honestly, honestly do you feel smartphones have improved your quality of life? I don't want this to turn spiritual or political. I'm not interested in what your rabbi or priest said nor does it matter what the lady on the bus told you and no this is not another thread like this.

I want you to take a moment (or more) and truly look deep down and think if your overall life is better now that smartphones have taken over. I'm focusing on the "smart" part, I don't think anyone would argue that cellphones as they were once known are a problem and, yes, life did improve when mobile phones came to be. (The person that yaps away on their phone while on a crowded bus or in a quiet waiting room is the problem, not the phone)

Smart. The fact that it destroys your dinner table? (I know, I know, you put it on vibrate) The fact that you can text and drive and miraculously come out alive? (I know, I know, your sooo good at it) The fact that you have "whatsapp chats" of every shape and size stealing the last few free minutes that mom and dad have for their kids and/or for each other? (I know, I know, if you don't reply someone else will) The fact that you can sit aimlessly just...scrolling. Simply scrolling. Scrolling up. Scrolling down. Scrolling sideways. Just scrolling... (I know, I know, it's the 2019 version of 'reading the paper')

Washing machines as we know them enabled one to no longer have to trek down to the river and wash the clothes, life improved tremendously, and an enormous amount of time was now freed up. That was in the early 1900s, today, about 100 years later they haven't changed that much. They might be smaller or have more buttons, but they still just wash whatever you decide to put in them. You still push the button(s) and walk away.

Smartphones came along about 15 years ago and since then they have changed countless times in size, shape, and features.  It still functions as a phone – connecting people from one end of the earth to the other in real time wirelessly – but that is sooo old school. Now this “phone” counts your steps. It deposits your checks. It records... everything. It buys your groceries. It wakes you up. It lets you see grandma on the other coast. It lets you know when grandpa came home. It lets you raise the heating from your car and lets you lower the AC while you wait to deplane. It calls your cab, orders your lunch, tracks your stocks, and tracks your inventory. It watches your front door and locks your back door. It opens the garage and closes your trunk. It pays the babysitter and invoices the client.  It turns your lights on and turns your microwave off. It connects you with your friend from elementary school and ensures you never hear from the weird guy at the bus stop. It directs you around traffic and navigates you through those back alleys. It lets you know who won the game and gets you the best seats to the next one. It is your calculator, your watch, your timer, your camera, your camcorder, your music player, your compass, your dictionary, your thesaurus, your encyclopedia, your map, your scorekeeper, your calendar, and even your money and passport.

BUT, is it your friend? Does the smartphone for all it has to offer give you more ‘time’ or does it just give you more timewasting activities?

You just saved 30 minutes by depositing a check on your phone rather then in the bank and in theory that should give you 30 more minutes to play with your kids, right? To eat a meal at a table rather then an “energy” bar on the go. To spend time with your spouse / mom / dad / a friend in need. Or did it give you time to get 30 more likes on Instagram? Which then led you to boasting about it on facebook, which led you to update your whatsapp status, which led your bff to update their snapchat status while your favorite chef just posted a new recipe which OMG I just have to check, which leads you back to Instagram but your suddenly stopped at the sound of a new email letting you know that your local dept store is giving away free tote bags to the first 500 people so you rush to post that on the neighborhood “free stuff” chat and then you see a whole slew of new messages that came in during the last 2 minutes. It’s a vicious cycle that repeats again, and again, and again.

Sadly, your spouse / mom / dad / friends/ kids fall farther and farther away. It’s scary to think what the next 15 years or so will bring.

Oh, you’ll tell me it’s so much easier to study now that I have all my notes in my pocket. Or that your exercising so much more now that you can see how many steps you’ve taken. Or that you (and/or your kids) don’t have to wait for the bus in the cold anymore because your bus chat lets you know when the bus started. Or you can now get into a toasty warm car in the winter or a freezing cold one in the summer thanks to your cars app. Or you can have your cake and eat it too just by lifting no more then a few fingers (not hands, not feet, just fingers) thanks to doordash/uber eats/seamless/grub hub.

There’s no denying your life has a lot more conveniences now but that’s just it, it’s a convenience. Do all these extra perks outweigh the mounting burdens you are creating by imploding into whatever device is occupying your precious hands?

I think it’s time to finally put our smartphone into our dumb washing machine push the button and walk away. Walk away feeling refreshed without even having to wait for the washing cycle to complete. Walk away to the bank with that check you need to deposit and, on the way, say hello to that neighbor you used to see when you waited for the bus because you didn’t know when it was coming.

Life is great, the world is a beautiful place, why confine it all into a 6 inch screen?

(Note: I specifically avoided any spiritual/religious points, please don’t overrun this with them. And please, please, please don’t be that guy - “if you don’t have smartphone how are you going to post this” )

Re: Kobe Bryant, one of the greats RIP!
Shtickle Golus vibes how the oilams so heartbroken. Klal Yisroel in pain needs our sympathy and support more
It’s symptomatic of the golus we are in. Same for those tuning in to Rush or Hannity for hours every day, or lining up at the Trump events. (Many of my political views happen to lean conservative by the way). And there are countless other examples of areas where frum Jews have lost sight of who we are, and that we are on a different trajectory than those around us, as talented as they may be. We are on a journey that spans thousands of years, and scores of host countries and cultures, on a path from Matan Torah to the final geulah. Anyone cognizant of this can not possibly identify in a personal way with the fleeting culture and company surrounding us that will all too soon fade into the forgotten past as surely as the scores of other proud cultures we have outlasted have. Our present environment, as grateful as we are to this malchus shel chessed, is but another brief encounter in our long journey that connects us with eternity.

 Chazal tell us
ותמלא הארץ אותם. שנתמלאו בתי טרטיאות ובתי קרקסיאות מהם, מיד גזרו עליהם לרוש מן המטה, שנאמר ותמלא הארץ אותם
In Egypt, the prototype of all future golus, it was at the point that the Jews started entering the theaters and places of entertainment, identifying with the Egyptian culture, that Hashem caused the Egyptians to turn on Klal Yisrael. As one of the pre-war gedolim once said:
והוצאתי אתכם מתחת סבלות מצרים
When they could no longer bear being part of the culture of mitzrayim
that is the point that they were ready to be redeemed. It’s sad, but simply a symptom of where many of us are holding

Why not join from your deck? You won't change people anyway.
שמוע מזבח טוב

Hashem wants us to listen to the rabbonim. I will have nothing to do with a minyan made in defiance. That is not frumkeit. It is hefkerus. That my children see that I listen to what every Rov in town said to do is much more important than tfila  "btzibur".

This is besides that joining from different places is only bshaas hadchack. Once the rabbonim say not to do it then it can no longer qualify.

Re: Antisemitism related to Coronavirus
Sickening petition:

https://www.change.org/p/parents-we-need-the-lakewood-community-shutdown-during-the-corvid-19-virus
I reported them, please everyone take a minute to do the same.

The allegations are completely false. Lakewood has on the whole been way MORE vigilant than the rest of Ocean County for the last week, preceding even the governor’s executive order. Also, there is a lot of anti Semitic sentiment being expressed in the comments, including some from ostensible health care workers. I fear they will believe this drivel and withhold some of their attention and care, even subconsciously. We cannot allow this to happen.

Please take a moment to report the violations to change.org. It is clearly defamatory, hate speech, and false and misleading.

Thanks for doing your part to keep people in Lakewood safe!

Re: Corona virus and your shull First of all, to say everyone on this thread is doing all they can in they can in the effort to advance social distancing is garbage, considering how many people have organized or joined minyanim in the last few days.

Second, @chevron made clear that his opinion is that information coming to and from Reb Chaim is being controlled by his inner circle. He also believes that coming out against minyanim today, when 2 weeks ago strong statements were made against c"v shutting schools, yeshivos, and shuls, is tantamount to shutting the barn door after the horses are running away. It's not the Rov who's being criticized, it's the information flow. You cannot rationally argue that the announcement to keep the status quo 2 weeks ago didn't have extreme repercussions.

I understand Kavod HaTorah and talking appropriately about Rabbonim and Gedolei HaDor. It's time we listened to the Torah and actually listen to doctors about what we should do, instead of waiting for Daas Torah to come out and say something. There are countless (hundreds) of letters from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, telling people that God gave the doctors the ability to heal, and it is our responsibility to listen to them. You shouldn't have to wait for your Rov to tell you to wash your hands.
