Re: Joining Kosherica cruise minyan
Can you elaborate on that last statement? To me there is no excuse for sneaking in for a lecture, food, entertainment and the similar and I understand ths question of somebody is paying for the minyan (Kosherica pays for the room, pesach program is paying for the hotel, etc.) but what do you mean putting yourself in this situation?
If you rent a house for Pesach in Orlando next to a community rented out by a program that has a dedicated house for a minyan for that program with the intention of using that as a minyan.
If you stay in the Fairmont Whistler for Pesach with the intention of buying your own catered food and sneaking into the Four Seasons program for a minyan.
If you buy a cabin on a boat specifically because someone else spent thousands of hours creating a business that offers a minyan for their customers.

You may think you're being a good Jew by sneaking in and davening in said minyan, but I'd posit that you are not. These are businesses offering a minyan to meet their paying clients needs, not community shuls. You are gaming the system at another Jew's expense.

Employment is only one factor out of many that effects unemployment.

Re: Crown Heights master thread PSA for those voting in Crown Heights:
If there's any vote that actually matters here, it would be voting Jesse Hamilton for state senate. From what I understand he's been very good for the community over the years but now lost the primary to a (Soros funded?) hard core leftist anti-Israel etc. and now he's running as independent.
I don't know if he has any real shot at winning but if he does this is one vote that really matters.

If you're planning on voting make sure to get him under independent. (IIRC there's no R in that race)
If you weren't gonna vote maybe this'll be a motivation to go out and do it. It's not very often that you have a vote around here that actually matters (for something other than upping the number of votes cast by the community)

I will bl"n vote for Hamilton, a friend of the community, but unfortunately (despite the fact that @ChaimMoskowitz can't seem to comprehend this) I don't think or vote will matter. It's virtually impossible to get in if not on the D ticket.

Re: Crown Heights master thread
Right. I voted for him this morning, but unfortunately we lost him when we didn't vote him in in the primaries. This is one area CH really needs to step up its game. We should ALL be registered, and registered as Democrats. It's the only we stand a chance of voting in our own interests.
Or as they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often.

There are plenty of bochurim that learn in Crown Heights, that should be registered to vote. Even with them, I don't know if we stand a chance, but in all honesty, if we ever stand a chance to make a difference, it's only when general turnout is extremely low, or in very localized races.

Re: Crown Heights master thread
Agreed. The only reason I think he might possibly have a chance is because he's the incumbent.

I don't want to sound racist, or anything of the sort, but what percentage of voters in general, and those that vote the D line specifically, actually know who the incumbent is or care much about anything other than the party line?

Re: Another massacre! 12 killed in mass shooting at bar in Thousand Oaks, California
Another mass shooting. Seems unclear what the motive was

Does it matter what the motive was?

From Islamic terror (San Bernardino) to White Nationalism (Pittsburgh) to Homophobia (Orlando) to left wing extremism (congressional baseball field) to run of the mill domestic violence, we have a gun problem in America, that many are actively looking the other way. The NRA isn't interested in responsible gun ownership they are interested in selling more guns and lately owning the libs.

There are reasonable policies that we can put in place that are well within the 2nd amendment.

  • Universal background checks
  • limit what types of bullets available the general public
  • Gun safety test before you can get a gun license (like with the DMV)

Re: Another massacre! 12 killed in mass shooting at bar in Thousand Oaks, California Just because the interests of gun owners and gun manufacturers are usually aligned, doesn't mean they're working for the gun manufacturers.

Yup, it's about time we do something about these darn racist guns.

Suspecting PTSD. No clue what (good) help is available for vets, but getting vets help for this is a big deal. Not specifically commenting on this specific incident, but in general. Don't misinterpret my comment as an excuse, or an exclusion of other possible causes/motives.
It is disgraceful how vets are treated. The treatment just isn't what it should be.
