How do i post a video in the body of the message rather then as a attachment?
You can't post a video as an attachment since the max attachment size is 256kb here.

You have to use the URL of the video. Try clicking the YouTube button when posting and putting the URL inside the brackets.

Re: 2019 Israeli election
So no majority means yet another election? WOW could you imagine if we had that here? We would run out of Kool-Aid.  :)

Not quite - essentially the President of the country will recommend to one of the two candidates to form a government - for a bunch of reasons, it's likely that he will turn to Bibi to do that - so he has a few weeks to broker a deal.

Can you explain in terms of our left, right and center? Who is who?

That's definitely complicated, but on a very simplistic level (I'm sure many will argue with these points):

The Right:
Likud - Bibi's party, the 'standard' right-wing party. Politically conservative, and religiously neutral/right leaning.
Shas - Sefardic Religious party - politically right, religiously right. Primary leadership and constituents are jews from Africa/France/Middle East Descent
UTJ (United Torah Judaism) - politically right, religiously right. Primary leadership and constituents are jews from Central/Northern European and American Descent
Yemina - a smaller politically right and religiously right-leaning party who's leaders (Shaked and Bennett) broke away from Likud

The "Center":
Blue and White - led by Gantz. This is a coalition of 3 parties, including the centrist Yesh Atid

Jewish Home - Lieberman's party - they are politically conservative, but somewhat anti-religious (for example, they are in favor of ending the draft exemptions for Charedim, but toe a hard line on the Palestinians, Iran, etc.) They are the outlier, because he politically disagrees with the left, and religiously with the right.

The Left (All politically left, and most are (at least) left-leaning when it comes to religion)
Joint Arab List - This is 4 smaller parties that generally represent that arab population and have Israeli Arab members of knesset. (Israeli Arab = Muslim or Christian Arabs that live within the 1967 borders and have full citizenship).
Labor - The party of Shimon Peres and Yitzchak Rabin, that's fallen off of the map. The old guard Israeli Left
Democratic Camp  - A coalition of parties that are the old-school Israeli "Extreme Left" - including Meretz.

Honestly, honestly do you feel smartphones have improved your quality of life? I don't want this to turn spiritual or political. I'm not interested in what your rabbi or priest said nor does it matter what the lady on the bus told you and no this is not another thread like this.

I want you to take a moment (or more) and truly look deep down and think if your overall life is better now that smartphones have taken over. I'm focusing on the "smart" part, I don't think anyone would argue that cellphones as they were once known are a problem and, yes, life did improve when mobile phones came to be. (The person that yaps away on their phone while on a crowded bus or in a quiet waiting room is the problem, not the phone)

Smart. The fact that it destroys your dinner table? (I know, I know, you put it on vibrate) The fact that you can text and drive and miraculously come out alive? (I know, I know, your sooo good at it) The fact that you have "whatsapp chats" of every shape and size stealing the last few free minutes that mom and dad have for their kids and/or for each other? (I know, I know, if you don't reply someone else will) The fact that you can sit aimlessly just...scrolling. Simply scrolling. Scrolling up. Scrolling down. Scrolling sideways. Just scrolling... (I know, I know, it's the 2019 version of 'reading the paper')

Washing machines as we know them enabled one to no longer have to trek down to the river and wash the clothes, life improved tremendously, and an enormous amount of time was now freed up. That was in the early 1900s, today, about 100 years later they haven't changed that much. They might be smaller or have more buttons, but they still just wash whatever you decide to put in them. You still push the button(s) and walk away.

Smartphones came along about 15 years ago and since then they have changed countless times in size, shape, and features.  It still functions as a phone – connecting people from one end of the earth to the other in real time wirelessly – but that is sooo old school. Now this “phone” counts your steps. It deposits your checks. It records... everything. It buys your groceries. It wakes you up. It lets you see grandma on the other coast. It lets you know when grandpa came home. It lets you raise the heating from your car and lets you lower the AC while you wait to deplane. It calls your cab, orders your lunch, tracks your stocks, and tracks your inventory. It watches your front door and locks your back door. It opens the garage and closes your trunk. It pays the babysitter and invoices the client.  It turns your lights on and turns your microwave off. It connects you with your friend from elementary school and ensures you never hear from the weird guy at the bus stop. It directs you around traffic and navigates you through those back alleys. It lets you know who won the game and gets you the best seats to the next one. It is your calculator, your watch, your timer, your camera, your camcorder, your music player, your compass, your dictionary, your thesaurus, your encyclopedia, your map, your scorekeeper, your calendar, and even your money and passport.
BUT, is it your friend? Does the smartphone for all it has to offer give you more ‘time’ or does it just give you more timewasting activities?

You just saved 30 minutes by depositing a check on your phone rather then in the bank and in theory that should give you 30 more minutes to play with your kids, right? To eat a meal at a table rather then an “energy” bar on the go. To spend time with your spouse / mom / dad / a friend in need. Or did it give you time to get 30 more likes on Instagram? Which then led you to boasting about it on facebook, which led you to update your whatsapp status, which led your bff to update their snapchat status while your favorite chef just posted a new recipe which OMG I just have to check, which leads you back to Instagram but your suddenly stopped at the sound of a new email letting you know that your local dept store is giving away free tote bags to the first 500 people so you rush to post that on the neighborhood “free stuff” chat and then you see a whole slew of new messages that came in during the last 2 minutes. It’s a vicious cycle that repeats again, and again, and again.

Sadly, your spouse / mom / dad / friends/ kids fall farther and farther away. It’s scary to think what the next 15 years or so will bring.

Oh, you’ll tell me it’s so much easier to study now that I have all my notes in my pocket. Or that your exercising so much more now that you can see how many steps you’ve taken. Or that you (and/or your kids) don’t have to wait for the bus in the cold anymore because your bus chat lets you know when the bus started. Or you can now get into a toasty warm car in the winter or a freezing cold one in the summer thanks to your cars app. Or you can have your cake and eat it too just by lifting no more then a few fingers (not hands, not feet, just fingers) thanks to doordash/uber eats/seamless/grub hub.

There’s no denying your life has a lot more conveniences now but that’s just it, it’s a convenience. Do all these extra perks outweigh the mounting burdens you are creating by imploding into whatever device is occupying your precious hands?

I think it’s time to finally put our smartphone into our dumb washing machine push the button and walk away. Walk away feeling refreshed without even having to wait for the washing cycle to complete. Walk away to the bank with that check you need to deposit and, on the way, say hello to that neighbor you used to see when you waited for the bus because you didn’t know when it was coming.

Life is great, the world is a beautiful place, why confine it all into a 6 inch screen?

(Note: I specifically avoided any spiritual/religious points, please don’t overrun this with them. And please, please, please don’t be that guy - “if you don’t have smartphone how are you going to post this” )

I have a F/R on mine and on my DW account, We filed a joint return, is there any DP if the 4506t could clash? (i.e. the IRS will not release the return twice in the same time period)
I've never seen any DP to indicate that it would be an issue. However to play it safe maybe leave a week in between (within the time limits that amex allows of course)

Re: Qantas 20% bonus for transfers from Amex
Nothing will post until after the targeted transfer bonus period is over. There is no way to know if it will stack until after.

Last time it posted within the transfer bonus period. The transfer bonus period has nothing to do with it.

I think it's safe to assume that this time there is only the bonus originating from Amex. Qantas is not adding another 20% on top of that.

My theory is that last time they were a new Amex transfer partner and were unaware at first that the bonus was given by Amex already so they did it in their end too. And then even after they did find out they just gave it to everyone to avoid a customer service fiasco. This time they already know the points are being transferred with 20% already added so they're not adding anything else on top of that which is totally in their right.

Do you have a source for that? Couldn't find it online...
The exact dates vary by state, but per the CARES Act it's available for the dates mentioned.
In NY, the exact dates are 4/5/20 thru 7/31/20 (claims for week ending in 4/5 are for week starting on 3/30).

Re: Corona virus and your shul

Me. I can and do blame them. What the bleep does Cuomo have to do with the way you live your life? He’s not your Rav, he’s not your doctor. Why would you act recklessly because you’re angry at a non Jewish politician???

Just about every rov and doctor has said they're waiting on the government. You yourself have said the same. It's blatantly obvious that we need to open up *safely*.

Even communities that had a leadership consensus to close Shuls early say the same. Even those that say wait 2 weeks until after the government allows it still are waiting for the government to start that clock *now*.

What. Is. Your. Point? How is this a proper attitude towards life as a frum yid??

My point is abundantly clear. So long as the people in charge don't open up safely, people will open up on their own unsafely. It's as clear as day. It's a concept that goes back literally to the beginning of time with Adam and Chava.

Anyone who went to shul in NY with more than 10 people at a time was breaking the rules. Even if you were all masked in a 500 seat shul. The rules are idiotic, clearly not thought out, and with other non essential gatherings like sports being approved, it's going to be impossible to get anyone to buy into following guidelines.

Will she have to pay back some of it?
Cuz she sort of isn’t eligible for reg unemployment?

She's fully eligible for PUA. Her weekly rate (not including $600 FPUC) should be $182.

Regarding summer break her eligibility is a different story.

Re: Unemployment Help
New York

Someone I know is having the same issue. They applied this past Wednesday (Erev Tisha B'Av), and got no acknowledgement of any kind. No email confirming receipt of the application, no letter via snail-mail, no secure message, no pass-or-fail error messages or anything when browsing the DOL site - except for the above-mentioned error when trying to access "unemployment services." Meanwhile, other people who applied on the same day at around the same time have already been acknowledged, approved, and even received their first payment via direct deposit over the weekend.

Is this this anything to worry about? Or just sit tight and wait patiently?

No correspondence until approval is normal NY DOL practice.
They usually email/text about a week after that message becomes available informing you that you need to call.

Did you try to call? I've seen a trend with claims on hold, that when you enter your SSN in the automated system you automatically get routed to an agent- I'm assuming it's because the system picks up on your hold claim status.

Chances are they need to verify your past employer or something similar before they can release your claim.

Re: Unemployment Help Just a quick update- don't have time to post now but even beyond the legalities of it being an executive order, it doesn't sound too promising.
The Fed is only funding $300 and it's coming from an existing Disaster Relief Fund. The Order states that the funding is through December 6 or until the fund drops to 25 billion (currently has 70 billion)- whichever comes first. This means that there are 150MM $300 payments available. Now assuming that the latest jobs report is correct and 18MM are unemployed, that gives just 8 weeks of payments to those collecting UI- definitely not til December if numbers hold steady or rise.

Re: Unemployment Help I'm getting reports of a second Docusign coming in for those who only had 10 weeks on their first Docusign.
Not yet sure if this is only for those who called in to request the missing backpay, or if it's automatic for all claimants missing some weeks.

Re: Unemployment Help
FEMA approved NYs application.

August 23, 2020, 09:30:56 PM
Re: Unemployment Help
FEMA itself has now the same wording as the DOL in their updated FAQ

Q: How does a state, territory or the District of Columbia determine if an individual meets the eligibility requirement under the August 8 Presidential Memorandum that he or she must receive at least $100 in benefits for the underlying unemployment benefit program?
A: This eligibility provision is determined at the individual level based on the individual’s weekly benefit amount. An individual is determined to have received at least $100 per week for purposes of being an “eligible claimant” if the individual’s WBA as provided on the monetary determination is at least $100 (including any dependents’ allowance). In addition, the week in question must be considered compensable.

That means everyone in NY and NJ (assuming NJ applies) who's not on EB (last 7 weeks of EB), and can certify that they're unemployed for a Covid-related reason will get the supplement.

Re: ENDED: Corona Victims Charity Pages (Donate Now & Each $1 Will Be Matched 4x!) To my fellow DDF'ers:
Along with a colleague I am trying to get in touch with at least one administrator/askan from each of the US coronavirus tzedakah funds, to inform them of the family's eligibility for unemployment benefits if:
  • family members were prevented from working when their loved one was ill
  • the surviving spouse or adult child is now a major breadwinner in lieu of the deceased, even if they never worked before
Benefits will vary based on the situation, but the average UI claim is ~20k, and could make a real difference for some families. From what we've heard most are not aware of their potential eligibility.

It's a monumental task, one that we did not anticipate when we first started out. After reviewing each of the funds and narrowing it down to just those in the US, it dawned on us that while most causes have names listed, almost none have any contact info. We're both not 'askan' people and so we don't know any (or nearly any) of the people listed.

If you have any contact info for any of the tzedakah fund administrators we would greatly appreciate the information. I do not want to post the list publicly, but if you think you can be of help please PM me and I'll send you the list of admins that I need contact info for.
Also feel free to PM with tzedakah funds of the sick or deceased that were not mentioned on this page but would benefit from such information.

Thank you and Tizkeh L'Mitzvos.

Re: Unemployment Help
But I saw a few people who only got Backpay up to the remaining days available.
i.e. someone who had 8 days remaining and 4 missing weeks, he called and was told that they are processing it for him, but a few days later he got only 2 weeks and the available days is at 0.

That's because agents love making everything as difficult as possible these days.

There needs to be a certification to jumpstart the adding of more days (internally)- if you don't certify after reaching 0 the additional days don't get added. I suggest these people call in and certify for those weeks again. It might take a few calls and a few weeks with the way things have been going, but they're entitled to those funds.

Yea that's the only thing that may change. Because who has a problem with him limiting supermarkets and banks, NY'ers are willing, able and ready to bear with it, he sure has a free pass for that too. So basically there is no real change here ::) ::)
In Willi BP Monsey it anyway doesnt matter as we are following already the constitution for a few months.... The main takeaway from this ruling is that Lord Cuomo is not the boss anymore.

This says that they'll only allow an earned income replacement, not the full calculation off the previous year's AGI. Bottom line: it doesn't help those that collected UI and potentially lost EITC because of it. It does help those that didn't have earned income this year, or had very little, but are still eligible for EITC based on 2020 AGI.

In the My Messages Section (PM) could we have an option to see both outgoing and incoming messages at once? or have the conversation automatically quoted in a reply? (as if now afaik if someone replies without quoting the original message you have to go to sent messages to find it).
There are myriad things that can be done to improve the PM section, like making conversation mode (like you said) and adding the new "add image to message" to the interface.

I think that forum mods purposefully (and probably rightfully) keep the PM section outdated so that PMs should only be used when needed, and that users should not be encouraged to abuse it and harass other members.

You can get a credit for the excess? Always seemed to me that you can only either use an fsa or get the credit, not both
Just checked the bill again, and it did not make it into the final version.
So looks like you can get either DC-FSA, or Dependent Care Credits.
Since DC-FSA is limited to $10,500 and the Dependent Care Credit can factor in up to $16,000, you can get up to 50% of the remaining $5,500 as a Dependent Care Credit. Your income bracket will also play a factor into which one is more beneficial.
