Re: Abortion = Murder? @JTZ,

I've often read your posts and I respect you a lot, but i've have thought that many of your post indicate that you seem to misunderstand something basic about Judaism.

While Judaism contains many elegant and neat truths, and is taught and studied and expounded upon by intellectual greats who use logic to decipher it's codes and come up with new laws and rulings- ultimately, it is NOT a logical or rational religion.

At first, however, in our search for Truth we are bound to logic and our limited capacity to understand truth.
When Abraham looked around the world, it was with logical conclusion that realized that there must be G-d in the world, and that it wasn't those idols his fellows worshipped.
So, acknowledging a Higher Power, and evaluatinge a religion is still within the realm of logic. And every ounce and every capacity for our human brains to evaluate and arrive at the truth, must be used. But anything after that point, logic is futile. G-d and his Torah are not bound to the limits of logic, because they are greater than logic. Suprarational, not subrational. It would seem ridiculous to try to understand G-d or his Torah through the lens of logic.

We do NOT do acts of charity out of kindness because it is the 'good' thing to do.
We act charitably with kindness because G-d commanded us to.

We are forbidden to murder, NOT because rationally it seems inhumane, unfair, evil or immoral.
We don't murder because we were forbidden to do so by a Higher Authority that we sumbit completely to, G-d. Period.

In a case such as Amalek, we can try to understand it as best as we can, with many beautiful midrashim and explanations... But ultimately, it's another commandment, and we quiet the resistance of our human minds, and accept that this is what G-d wants.
And it doesn't matter whether it makes sense or not. And it doesn't matter if it makes us look evil in the eyes of others.

(A. And how do we know this is what G-d wants? Different Discussion. B. And why can't other violent religions use the same ideas to explain their violence? While we are commanded to love and respect and tolerate all human beings, it doesn't mean that we need to agree with them, or accept their religion as truth. A deeper investigation will show falacies in the original thinking that led them to their belief. But that brings us back to A)

I am an openly unapologetic American, Jewish woman from Brooklyn.
I don't apologize for my religion even when it seems at odds with the rest of 'modern' thought.

So, under Jewish Law, even though a fetus isn't considered fully a human, if it is not Amalek and it is not posing a threat to its mother, and it seems to be healthy with normal potential for life- (of course, each case must be analyzed by Drs and competent halachic authority) then it is forbidden to kill it via abortion.

Inopportune time or unwanted pregnancies are not (usually) considered a threat to the mother's health- and therefor are forbidden.

At all times, the question is NOT, "Is the right or humane thing to do?" rather, it is "In this case, what has G-d commanded"

ETA: This doesn't mean that religious people can shut off our minds and disregard logic. We always use logic to explore any topic to the limits of our minds, but ultimately we understand that logic is not the be and end all. There's more.

Re: Absent DDFers
I left for a year, but people started complaining that the forums where to quite, so I came back.

And then people started complaining that I talk to much.

I'm quite confused at this point.
Tell us more, and how does that make you feel? ;)

Re: PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others
I got myself into huge cc debt and someone who I'm forever grateful to help me pull out.

I'm not a spendrift, I just spent a long time on a very profitable contract that didn't pan out, I ignored my cards and was paying 600 a month in interest

Now I bust my butt every month to pay the interest free principal transfer.

I drive the cheapest car I could lease, my phone is old, I try not to drink anything but cheap good wine lol and my biggest expenses are travel related mostly funded by points from healthy churn.

And looking back, I don't think anyone should get married without a clear handle on finances..

I know when I iyh marry I will approach 1 friend who is a top CPA and a group of friends who are very successful investor's and have them invest my wedding funds as a trust for my kids education.

I've thought it out and recognized priorities

In that case you are an example of how people can change from these underlying attitudes.

Re: Iran's Top Terrorist Taken Out By The U.S.
So while you joke do have the reason why it happened now?
I have no idea.

On the face of it, doing it to distract from impeachment doesn't make sense.

My gut feeling is that there wasn't any one big reason for it being now, it just worked out this way.
It's probably something that's been on the table for a while, the embassy attack may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
There's also the opportunity factor; how often is he in Iraq and they know exactly where he is?
And as for whatever he's been planning going forward, I'm not convinced it's anything significantly worse than what he's been doing until now. (i.e. it explains why he's a legit target but doesn't answer why now specifically)

So why are there "conflicting reports from the WH and DOD?" (I'm gonna take your word for it that this is the case, I really haven't paid much attention to what anyone was saying.)
1. Messaging has never been this administration's strong point.
2. they're trying a little too hard to blow up the importance of doing it right now, even if the reason is as I said above, primarily to avoid accusations of it being to distract from impeachment.
3.for Trump there's no such thing as "now is when it just happened to all come together' it has to be "This is the best, most appropriate, time there ever was and ever will be for this"

OMG I definitely am losing it.

@Dan not to challenge you just plain curious, why would the reservation say 2 checked bags though? Confirming you saw the screenshot I attached.

And calling all experts, what do I do now?
I'd suggest you file a DoT complaint against Alitalia if you have a screenshot showing 2 bags and they won't honor it.

מי כעמך ישראל - Post your stories here Lets talk about all the absolutely wonderful things that are being done in Klal Yisroel right now.

From the hundreds of volunteers to fill in for understaffed tomchei shabboses, to the $100k raised in 4 days to help a grocery store support families for pesach by customers adding just a little extra to their bill to help out another family.

From TorahAnytime being slow due to the overwhelming amount of shiurim being listened to online, to the top jewish entertainers all making time to brighten our kids day.

From our educators working hard to provide our kids with an education under incredibly trying circumstances, to a WhatsApp group that is finishing Tehillim multiple times daily as people continuously take time out of their day to daven for others.

From Dan and others for putting together an incredible starting pesach list, to everyone here who continually posts when something that people might need is in stock.

I will say it again מי כעמך ישראל and thank you Hashem for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful nation.

Please share your stories here!

Re: RIP/BDE Master Thread - COVID-19 related Repost from

I would post this in the wiki of each thread in the board, but instead, I'll put it here:

Generally, when I appreciate the idea of a DDF post, I push that small button under the post, aptly titled "like", so that the poster can get some recognition and know that people appreciate his/her contribution. I also use the button when I recognize that the DDFer exerted effort into bringing us the information contained in the post, and as a sign of gratitude, I hit the like button.

On this board, it has been increasingly difficult for me to hit the like button. How can someone like a post of this nature?
I have what to say on this topic as my shver a"h came out of there in a body bag this week, but my shver would have shushed me that the hospital didn't do anything and that's what Hashem did and only him.
My shver was niftar motzei Shabbas in NYC. He was ‘lucky’ enough to get a Tahara but we had to bury him al tanai in a temporary grave so we can move him to Israel at a later date. Only option to get to Israel was via a private jet but body could not be escorted by anyone due to the quarantine laws.

I have to say this has been one of the most gut wrenching, heart breaking experiences of my life and watch someone who was a true yoreh shamyim to have had a levya with a few people in the rain at the grave site. Not being able to say Kaddish for him, not have a shiva and give proper respect to him has been truly unbearable.

This is not to mention he was isolated in an icu unit for two weeks by himself on a ventilator and died by himself with his children not being able to goodbye.

I am not someone who would typically share this info but people need to know what we are dealing with here. The pain is too much.
My shver a"h is on this list. May his soul rest in Gan Eden. I have no doubt that he's there.
I therefore wish to make an open declaration, which I'm sure others will join me in asserting.
On this board, the like button does not connote that the contents of the post is enjoyed. Rather, it has taken on a new meaning:
"I feel for you; I care for you; I hope your pain goes away and only good news should be forthcoming."
I look forward to the day when the like button will retain its literal sense, but until then, know that a push on it means that we are with you, living this nightmare alongside you.

A goy does care. I read just about every post in this sub-forum. Some of the stories just tear me up.

When I read a story about someone taken so young and leaving behind a family with so many children I have no words how that makes me feel. Yes I do cry. I do not see them as Jewish children but as G-d's children who will never see their mother/father on this earth again.

When I read about so many of the elders you respect and cherish taken from you it hurts me deeply.

When I read the story of a non-Jewish family I don't even know losing four of their close family in a few days I have no words to explain how I feel.

Then I see a comment how a goy does not have "out of the ordinary feeling" for others and many members "like" it or +1000 it. Not one comment "Hey that's not really true".

There are tens of millions just like me.

Bd"e. Not about her, per se, I've never met anyone in the family. But I once took an Uber from Borough Park to Crown Heights and the driver started telling me he used to work for "the people like me" (I.e. Chassidim). I thought to myself, "here it goes, what did we do wrong now?"
He starts going on and on about how kind and generous his boss was and how well he was treated. Was the best work experience he ever had. He worked at Korn's bakery.
The whole family is special like that. A classy woman. Had her in my car in the last year.

Re: Will the truth come out how this administration made blunder after blunder?
Start with this:

I can confirm this info first hand from a few friends in the business, it wasn't just this one home.

If you believe this Cuomo is responsible for murder. The administration forced virus free nursing homes to take covid patients from hospitals against their will, subsequently infecting and killing dozens of nursing home residents. The State was nice enough to send a bundle of body bags to the nursing home along with the covid patients. If this is accurate heads should roll.

Re: Covid-19 and Shalom Bayis Very rosy thread here. B”h I would put myself in the unchanged to better category. I have what I would consider to be a really good marriage but looking way back to Shana Rishona something like this would’ve been a serious threat to my marriage at that point. It’s only because we had our space and time for ourselves that we were able to work things out during what for most people is a very rocky time. Many other couples I know of have the same dynamic, and it is well known that it is a trying time for most. Then there are a huge amount of people out there who are suffering from mental illness and this situation makes what was barely tolerable into a simply horrible situation for the other spouse, especially for those with severe personality disorders. Just ask any of the helplines and crisis organizations. Let us not forget that there are thousands who are suffering to various degrees from this.

The double standard is still anti-semitism. If police profile with their traffic stops then "Officer he was speeding too" is a very valid legal claim.

Aiva doesnt care about whataboutism. Aiva doesnt care about double standards. We are still not allowed to do things and on the flip side allowed to do certain prohibited things Mishum Aiva. Levaya of Rebbe or socially not distanced minyanim are not those prohibited things!!!

Re: Tweets, Pictures, And Videos That Are Coronavirus Related
What does the legal standard have to do with the Mayor calling out dangerous behaviors? He's allowed to. If, summons' were issued, and I doubt they were, then maybe you have a claim of selective enforcement.  If he didnt call out any other group its because we are visible and he's tone deaf. We still have a chiyuv of venishmartem. His calling it out has nothing to do with us!!!
No he is not allowed to single out one ethnic group while ignoring all others.

Re: Bill D’Blasio Warns "The Jewish Community"
I may get blasted for this but I am trying to be honest with myself here and I just don't see why saying Jewish community is any more a problem vs Trump calling covid-19 the Chinese virus. The only reason its concerning is because as jews we understand the likelihood that it leads to anti-semitism.
One is against an ethnic group and the other is a country's government. That was easy.

Re: Bird Feeders and Backyard Birding Some random pictures, taken at my feeders or the nearby trees - and all taken through my kitchen window.

Male American goldfinch - my personal favorite:

The above picture is their summer plumage - in the winter they're more drab. There are ten of them in the picture below, two shy of the all-time record (which happened on a Shabbos, of course):

Red-bellied woodpecker - the largest woodpecker we have here and the most skittish. You as much breathe heavily in the house and he takes off:

Downy woodpecker - the smallest one we have, and has no problem with you walking right up to him:

Black-capped chickadee:

A northern cardinal teaching his son how to crush seeds:

Common grackle - dark and drab in the shade, but has a beautiful iridescence in the sun:

Tufted titmouse:

Gray catbird - this guy shows up every summer for about a week, hangs around on the same spot on top of the feeder, and then moves on:

The bluejay brigade:

Re: COVID-19 Related Humor So my childrens school sent home a pack of arts & crafts activities for the children.

Going through to see what was sent, I come across coloring books for Pesach Sheni and Lag B'omer, awesome, just in time. Then, a little further I see Shavous coloring pages and I think to myself, well, I guess they want to make sure just in case.

Near the end of the pack I noticed that they included Rosh Hashana, Yom Kipur and Succos books as well. That touched a nerve and I became furious. All fired up I call up the teacher, "Al Tiftach Peh, how dare you send home these worksheets?" Waiting calmly for me to finish my rant the teacher then asks me, "do you know this weeks Parsha?"

Re: Unemployment Help
I would say (W2 wages above the threshold for 2019) Whats the threshold?
For claims filed in 2019, you must have been paid at least $2,400 in one calendar quarter (this amount increases to $2,600 for claims filed in 2020)

In NY there's only one initial application regardless if you end up on standard UI or PUA.
If they're not picking up his employer automatically make sure he entered his SS # correctly. If he did then just manually put in their info (EIN can be found on his W2).

Re: Unemployment Help
Thank you so much for your response. And you guessed correct for NY :)
So how do i start the initial claim? The first question is, "How many days did you work this week?" and "When was last day worked?"
Do i answer that question assuming they mean "work FULL TIME"? Because currently i am working minimal hours...

Answer the first question honestly.
Last day worked enter your last FT date of employment (that date in Mid-March)

Re: Unemployment Help
Tax Credits: Covered employers qualify for dollar-for-dollar reimbursement through tax credits for all qualifying wages paid under the FFCRA.
Qualifying wages are those paid to an employee who takes leave under the Act for a qualifying reason, up to the appropriate per diem and aggregate payment caps.
Applicable tax credits also extend to amounts paid or incurred to maintain health insurance coverage. For more information, please see the Department of the Treasury’s website.

Is this done on the quarterly 940?

On UI you'll get your Weekly Benefit Rate plus $600 for all claims 3/28-7/31.

Can I choose to get paid from the employer or go on UI?

Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees may qualify for exemption from the requirement to provide leave due to school closings or child care unavailability if the leave requirements would jeopardize the viability of the business as a going concern.
Is this a self-assessment?

P.S. It beyond me what @cgr  is are doing for the community

Re: Couples Stuck in USA - Rent on Israeli Apartments I dont understand the Ramat Eshkol psak at all.
I am an American Avrech currently living and renting in EY. After Purim when other Avreichim were leaving to the US and Europe, I wished them all "A Gmar Chasima Tova". Every single one of them understood what I was saying... i.e. that they probobly will not be able to get back in to the country after Pesach.
Everyone who didn't leave can continue using their appartment.
Why should the owners lose because their renter made a stupid/self-centered/whatever-you-want-to-call-it decision? The renter left knowing that he will not be able to get back in!!!
---edit: I understand why people left. Its just unreasonable to use their reasons to get out of fulfilling your contract---
There is no makas medina on the use of the appartment. there is no makas medina on the borders being closed because it was forseeable that they would be closed and you left anyway!!!
Maakos Medina is something that is unforseeable and there is nothing you can do to prevent the loss. Look the Gemaras up. Baba Metzia 103b - 106b.

Obviously people who left before Purim is a different shaila completely.

Heroes Blog Here! The age of Corona has given rise to a new generation of heroes. Healthcare workers have been granted the title, along with many others whose dormant selflessness has come to the surface under the unique set of circumstances we are now living with.

Upon reflection, I have come to realize that there have been so many here, on DDF, who have earned that distinction as well. Members of the DDF community who have answered the call and have become heroes in their own right, even from the safety of their home computers. I believe that many of them deserve to be recognized for their valor, beyond the simple gesture of hitting the like button.

That is the purpose of this thread. Here, members can nominate others as heroes. No, their payout won't be any greater than when they accrued likes. But garnering special mention is the least we can do for the heroes among us.

I would like to begin by nominating three heroes who come to mind:

@cgr has turned the unemployment help thread into a full-blown accounting office, answering all sorts of questions day and night for free.
She answers questions all day and night. The LRRC gets donations and a lot of government funding. She has evolved into a one-woman organization, answering all the questions for free.

I'm certain that she could advertise "Get help with UI for $100/hour" and she would have steady business. She chooses to be a free resource to everyone here.

@Iz and his team at the Coronavirus matching campaign thread, who have pulled in thousands of dollars for almanos and yesomim with their generosity and goodwill.

@Yehudaa has uploaded tens of documents of divrei Torah each Friday, so that DDFers can print and read over Shabbos.

Who are your heroes?

May 26, 2020, 12:39:53 AM
Re: Heroes Blog Here! Agreed to all of the above. I think I mentioned this before but a lot of us owe our early awareness to @yuneeq and to @chevron. They moved mountains to bring awareness of what was coming and in doing so, undoubtedly saved many lives.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to @aygart for his clarity, as always, and to @Lurker and @S209 for constantly keeping us in the know on the latest information on Covid19, and on ensuring we do not get blinded by emotional, political and other considerations.
