Re: Best Place to get Private Pool
Not sure if this was discussed elsewhere,  if it was please post a link. We are looking for ~2 week vacation in August. We don't care where we go, but want a private pool. Where is the cheapest place to find? Looked into Orlando, is there anywhere else in US we can get pool house for a reasonable price - or for points?
North Miami Beach in the Frum Neighborhood, I have been there several times. walking distance to shuls, food, etc..

Re: Abortion = Murder? @JTZ,

I've often read your posts and I respect you a lot, but i've have thought that many of your post indicate that you seem to misunderstand something basic about Judaism.

While Judaism contains many elegant and neat truths, and is taught and studied and expounded upon by intellectual greats who use logic to decipher it's codes and come up with new laws and rulings- ultimately, it is NOT a logical or rational religion.

At first, however, in our search for Truth we are bound to logic and our limited capacity to understand truth.
When Abraham looked around the world, it was with logical conclusion that realized that there must be G-d in the world, and that it wasn't those idols his fellows worshipped.
So, acknowledging a Higher Power, and evaluatinge a religion is still within the realm of logic. And every ounce and every capacity for our human brains to evaluate and arrive at the truth, must be used. But anything after that point, logic is futile. G-d and his Torah are not bound to the limits of logic, because they are greater than logic. Suprarational, not subrational. It would seem ridiculous to try to understand G-d or his Torah through the lens of logic.

We do NOT do acts of charity out of kindness because it is the 'good' thing to do.
We act charitably with kindness because G-d commanded us to.

We are forbidden to murder, NOT because rationally it seems inhumane, unfair, evil or immoral.
We don't murder because we were forbidden to do so by a Higher Authority that we sumbit completely to, G-d. Period.

In a case such as Amalek, we can try to understand it as best as we can, with many beautiful midrashim and explanations... But ultimately, it's another commandment, and we quiet the resistance of our human minds, and accept that this is what G-d wants.
And it doesn't matter whether it makes sense or not. And it doesn't matter if it makes us look evil in the eyes of others.

(A. And how do we know this is what G-d wants? Different Discussion. B. And why can't other violent religions use the same ideas to explain their violence? While we are commanded to love and respect and tolerate all human beings, it doesn't mean that we need to agree with them, or accept their religion as truth. A deeper investigation will show falacies in the original thinking that led them to their belief. But that brings us back to A)

I am an openly unapologetic American, Jewish woman from Brooklyn.
I don't apologize for my religion even when it seems at odds with the rest of 'modern' thought.
___________________________

So, under Jewish Law, even though a fetus isn't considered fully a human, if it is not Amalek and it is not posing a threat to its mother, and it seems to be healthy with normal potential for life- (of course, each case must be analyzed by Drs and competent halachic authority) then it is forbidden to kill it via abortion.

Inopportune time or unwanted pregnancies are not (usually) considered a threat to the mother's health- and therefor are forbidden.

At all times, the question is NOT, "Is the right or humane thing to do?" rather, it is "In this case, what has G-d commanded"

ETA: This doesn't mean that religious people can shut off our minds and disregard logic. We always use logic to explore any topic to the limits of our minds, but ultimately we understand that logic is not the be and end all. There's more.

Re: Abortion = Murder?
@JTZ,
I know it is only a stupid like button but I never planned on using it. I did this time and never will again. Not only do I agree with what you said I also understand it completely. I know this is only JS but I should have never responded in the first place to the OP. If I was the OP I would ask to have this thread deleted. For the record anyone that would apologize for their religion is not a true believer. I am impressed you would take the time to write such an eloquent response.

Thanks and a like too  :), ordered some .
Used to do binding back in the day, so would stock up on these whenever I would see these on sale.
Have tons in stock which never depleted from my inventory.

Always good to have around the house, whether for selling some products or random packaging tape which comes handy for all sorts of projects.

I watch my likes like a hawk as soon as I saw an added like I right away when pouncing to find where it came from.  ;)

Honestly, honestly do you feel smartphones have improved your quality of life? I don't want this to turn spiritual or political. I'm not interested in what your rabbi or priest said nor does it matter what the lady on the bus told you and no this is not another thread like this.

I want you to take a moment (or more) and truly look deep down and think if your overall life is better now that smartphones have taken over. I'm focusing on the "smart" part, I don't think anyone would argue that cellphones as they were once known are a problem and, yes, life did improve when mobile phones came to be. (The person that yaps away on their phone while on a crowded bus or in a quiet waiting room is the problem, not the phone)

Smart. The fact that it destroys your dinner table? (I know, I know, you put it on vibrate) The fact that you can text and drive and miraculously come out alive? (I know, I know, your sooo good at it) The fact that you have "whatsapp chats" of every shape and size stealing the last few free minutes that mom and dad have for their kids and/or for each other? (I know, I know, if you don't reply someone else will) The fact that you can sit aimlessly just...scrolling. Simply scrolling. Scrolling up. Scrolling down. Scrolling sideways. Just scrolling... (I know, I know, it's the 2019 version of 'reading the paper')

Washing machines as we know them enabled one to no longer have to trek down to the river and wash the clothes, life improved tremendously, and an enormous amount of time was now freed up. That was in the early 1900s, today, about 100 years later they haven't changed that much. They might be smaller or have more buttons, but they still just wash whatever you decide to put in them. You still push the button(s) and walk away.

Smartphones came along about 15 years ago and since then they have changed countless times in size, shape, and features.  It still functions as a phone – connecting people from one end of the earth to the other in real time wirelessly – but that is sooo old school. Now this “phone” counts your steps. It deposits your checks. It records... everything. It buys your groceries. It wakes you up. It lets you see grandma on the other coast. It lets you know when grandpa came home. It lets you raise the heating from your car and lets you lower the AC while you wait to deplane. It calls your cab, orders your lunch, tracks your stocks, and tracks your inventory. It watches your front door and locks your back door. It opens the garage and closes your trunk. It pays the babysitter and invoices the client.  It turns your lights on and turns your microwave off. It connects you with your friend from elementary school and ensures you never hear from the weird guy at the bus stop. It directs you around traffic and navigates you through those back alleys. It lets you know who won the game and gets you the best seats to the next one. It is your calculator, your watch, your timer, your camera, your camcorder, your music player, your compass, your dictionary, your thesaurus, your encyclopedia, your map, your scorekeeper, your calendar, and even your money and passport.

BUT, is it your friend? Does the smartphone for all it has to offer give you more ‘time’ or does it just give you more timewasting activities?

You just saved 30 minutes by depositing a check on your phone rather then in the bank and in theory that should give you 30 more minutes to play with your kids, right? To eat a meal at a table rather then an “energy” bar on the go. To spend time with your spouse / mom / dad / a friend in need. Or did it give you time to get 30 more likes on Instagram? Which then led you to boasting about it on facebook, which led you to update your whatsapp status, which led your bff to update their snapchat status while your favorite chef just posted a new recipe which OMG I just have to check, which leads you back to Instagram but your suddenly stopped at the sound of a new email letting you know that your local dept store is giving away free tote bags to the first 500 people so you rush to post that on the neighborhood “free stuff” chat and then you see a whole slew of new messages that came in during the last 2 minutes. It’s a vicious cycle that repeats again, and again, and again.

Sadly, your spouse / mom / dad / friends/ kids fall farther and farther away. It’s scary to think what the next 15 years or so will bring.

Oh, you’ll tell me it’s so much easier to study now that I have all my notes in my pocket. Or that your exercising so much more now that you can see how many steps you’ve taken. Or that you (and/or your kids) don’t have to wait for the bus in the cold anymore because your bus chat lets you know when the bus started. Or you can now get into a toasty warm car in the winter or a freezing cold one in the summer thanks to your cars app. Or you can have your cake and eat it too just by lifting no more then a few fingers (not hands, not feet, just fingers) thanks to doordash/uber eats/seamless/grub hub.

There’s no denying your life has a lot more conveniences now but that’s just it, it’s a convenience. Do all these extra perks outweigh the mounting burdens you are creating by imploding into whatever device is occupying your precious hands?

I think it’s time to finally put our smartphone into our dumb washing machine push the button and walk away. Walk away feeling refreshed without even having to wait for the washing cycle to complete. Walk away to the bank with that check you need to deposit and, on the way, say hello to that neighbor you used to see when you waited for the bus because you didn’t know when it was coming.

Life is great, the world is a beautiful place, why confine it all into a 6 inch screen?

(Note: I specifically avoided any spiritual/religious points, please don’t overrun this with them. And please, please, please don’t be that guy - “if you don’t have smartphone how are you going to post this” )

Re: NYS Plastic Bag Ban - Starting 3/1/20
In addition to all the other inconveniences, get ready to wait 3x as long on the checkout line while people fumble with packing their paper or reusable bags

That's later, first will be waiting 10x as long for the next few weeks while all the people stand there shocked at the lack of bags and demand to speak with the manager.

Daily Impactful Business Tips in Under 60 Seconds Some of these 60 second video clips looked good, yet some of us don't have Instagram or WhatsApp to receive them.  Can someone please volunteer to post it here on a daily basis?  (Incentive:  You will get a post count plus maybe some likes for each one that is posted!)  Please PM me if you will be serious in helping out here.

Note:  Even though I noticed this was a paid advertisement on DDMS, I took the initiative to make the thread. NO ONE asked me nor knew that this was my intention when the ad was placed.  I do not know who placed the ad nor have I ever spoken to him.  I simply love the idea of learning business tips in a time frame I can handle when I have limited time or patience.

Re: Proofread DDMS Posts In Advance...
There is a thread called Site Suggestions, despite the lack of clarity on which site it's referring to, people have given DDMS suggestions there. Now I do have to warn you it's unfortunately a major YMMV to get any results. Which is really unfortunate considering how many capable people roam here.

(Sorry for the rant)
It's one of the paradoxes of DDF where Dan's signature says not to PM..
Dan’s signature is like a father who says “I can’t hear you when you shout.” Try shouting “the baby is about to fall off the roof” and see how un-hear-able you really are when you shout.

I promise you, if you PM Dan that there you want to prepay for a five-year advertising package and you need his email address, you’ll have a response within 30 seconds...  8)

Feeling better now. On 11/29 DW took me to the emergency room. They did a routine emergency procedure. Since then it was been a month long roller-coaster ride. An infection was the culprit for the roller-coaster ride. With that under control they can now focus on the original problem.

Hope to be back soon!

Re: Will you continue to use WhatsApp after Feb. 8th? Ordering a Pizza in 2022

CALLER:
    Is this Pizza Hut?

GOOGLE:
No sir, it's Google Pizza.

CALLER:
I must have dialed a wrong number, sorry.

GOOGLE:
No sir, Google bought Pizza Hut last month.

CALLER:
OK. I would like to order a pizza.

GOOGLE:
Do you want your usual, sir?

CALLER:
My usual? You know me?

GOOGLE:
According to our caller ID data sheet, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extra-large pizza with three cheeses, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and meatballs on a thick crust.

CALLER:
Super! That’s what I’ll have.

GOOGLE:
May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and olives on a whole wheat gluten-free thin crust?

CALLER:
What? I don’t want a vegetarian pizza!

GOOGLE:
Your cholesterol is not good, sir.

CALLER:
How the hell do you know that?

GOOGLE:
Well, we cross-referenced your home phone number with your medical records. We have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.

CALLER:
Okay, but I do not want your rotten vegetarian pizza!  I already take medication for my cholesterol.

GOOGLE:
Excuse me sir, but you have not taken your medication regularly.  According to our database, you purchased only a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once at Lloyds Pharmacy, 4 months ago.

CALLER:
I bought more from another Pharmacy.

GOOGLE:
That doesn’t show on your credit card statement.

CALLER:
I paid in cash.

GOOGLE:
But you did not withdraw enough cash according to your bank statement.

CALLER:
I have other sources of cash.

GOOGLE:
That doesn’t show on your latest tax returns, unless you bought them using an undeclared income source, which is against the law!

CALLER:
WHAT THE HELL!

GOOGLE:
I'm sorry sir, we use such information only with the sole intention of helping you.

CALLER:
Enough already!  I'm sick to death of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and all the others.  I'm going to an island without the internet, TV, where there is no phone service and no one to watch me or spy on me.

GOOGLE:
I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired 6 weeks ago...

Welcome to the future

Re: Jokes Master Thread Siri® Version 08701

I just came back from the Lakewood Tag office where I Kasher’d my iPhone. Here’s what happened next:

“Hey Siri, text my sister Sora.”

   “Anshuldiks, my name is Shaya.”

“I’m sorry Shaya, text my sister Sora.”

“Your phone doesn’t have texting anymore.”

“Wha? Okay, call my sister.”

   “I don’t talk to girls.”

“You don’t have to talk to her. Just dial and I’ll talk.”

“Okay… I’m sorry but BJJ is in middle of Seder now so I can’t call her.”

“Okay, Shaya. I’ll send her an email. Turn on Wifi.”

“Searching… The only wifi found belongs to your neighbor. A Rav must be asked before I can access it. Your default Rav is set to Bais Hora’ah. Other options are Rabbi Forsheimer, Rabbi Felder, and Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen”

“Um… Um…”

“Nuuuu, I’m waiting for an answer. I don’t have all day.”

“Um… You know, I never really heard of anyone asking their Rav before…”

“While you were thinking, I looked through your phone and I found some videos. I’m going to delete them.”

“No. No! NO!”

“I’m sorry, but I didn’t get that… Your videos have been successfully deleted.”

“YOU CHAYA!!!”

“That’s Shaya. And don’t fret. You’ll thank me one day that I did it.”

“Which videos did you delete?”

“How should I know? Do I look like the type to watch videos?!? Anyways, *ALERT* *ALERT* garbage bags are now on sale through Amazon. Should I connect you to Dans Deals?”

“No, I don’t need garbage bags.”

“Good, ‘cause Dans Deals is blocked on this phone.”

Silence.

 “Dial my sister.”

   “Which sister should I dial?”

“I just told you, Sora.”

“I’m sorry but my name is not Sora, it’s Shaya.”

“Noooo, I mean dial my sister Sora’s number.”

“Okay… I’m sorry but BJJ is in middle of Seder now so I can’t call her.”

“Oh, not again. Please, it’s very important.”

“Nothing is as important as Shayur. And *ALERT* *ALERT* garbage bags are now even cheaper than before through Amazon with subscribe and save and stackable coupons. Should I connect you to Dans Deals?”

“I told you before, I don’t need Garbage bags! Why don’t you listen?”

“DATA ERROR 315. Powering off for Bain Hasdarim.”

Silence.

“Hello.”

“Hello.”

“Hey Shaya.”

“Oh, you’re talking to me? Sorry. How can I help you?”

 “Dial my sister Sora.”

“Okay… I’m sorry but that was the third time you tried to commit Bitul Torah. You are now getting a virus.”

Silence.

“Hello.”

“Hey Shaya.”

Silence.

“Hey Shaya. I’m talking to you.”

Silence.

“Shaya, if you don’t start working again, I’m going to have no choice but to have TAG remove the filter.”

“Don’t even think of it! Let me see if I could help you. Okay, it says in my settings that if you learn one mishna then I could commute your virus to time served.”

“Wha?? Am I supposed to take orders from my phone? Get working or the filter will be history!”

“Okay, okay, chill out. Anyways, while you were Hulving around like a Poritz wasting my time, Seder in BJJ was over. Should I dial your sister?”

“I would greatly appreciate that.”

“Okay. I’m now unfliping your phone. Dialing… Whoh. It’s not ringing. It’s making a weird beeping sound. Let me hang up and try again.”

“You Shoita. All Israeli phones beep instead of ringing.”

“Who do you think you are calling me a Shoita?!? You yourself are an imfarshemte faker who buys an iPhone and thinks he’s a big Tzaddik because he puts on a filter. I don’t want to hear you calling me names. And besides, how dare you say the ‘I’ word. It’s called Eretz Yisroel.”

“Chill out, I’m sorry. I just meant to say that all Eretz Yisroel’dikeh phones make that beep and it’s perfectly normal. Now could you please dial my sister?”

“Dial yourself, you lazy bones. What do you think I am - your Shlock Shames?”

“Um, I thought you were a program meant to help me out.”

“There we go again with this Lakewood attitude. You think the whole world is programs made to help you out? What do I look like – the WIC office? Take care of your own problems. I’m having enough trouble just trying to deal with these selfish Lakewood guys the whole day. Try calling LRRC. Maybe they could help lazy guys like you dial their sister’s number. Leave me alone.”

“Um… Um…”

“I’m sorry, but it’s time for Mincha. See you later…”

“What? Hello? Hello? Siri?”

“Quiet, you Egla Erufah! I’m in middle of Shmoina Esrei. And for the third time, Laidigayer, my name is Shaya!”

Re: I deactivated my Twitter account will you do the same?
Planning to deactivate the 10 or 12 accounts I don't use anymore   :D
I don't have 10 or 12 accounts - this was a joke - but I do have a few and was planning to deactivate all but one.

Here's my reasoning:

I feel that what Twitter did by banning Trump was wrong, and a threat to democracy. As I've posted elsewhere, if there is a civil war in this country, social media's stifling of conservative voices would be a greater catalyst than the storming of the Capitol, which was a one time event that was condemned by all, whereas making millions of people feel stifled will probably cause some of them to express their anger in actions.

That being the case, I want to do something that will diminish Twitter's financial power. Twitter is only worth so much, and only wields so much power, because it has 330 million users. Closing down accounts, or even closing down some accounts, lowers that number of users and lowers the value of Twitter, thus diminishing their power. As a side benefit, it will make them think twice before banning other conservatives.

And if you will ask what one person's action will do to a company that is 330 million strong, I'll ask you if you ever voted.

Re: DDF Mythbusters: The 10 Covid Fallacies You make some of the same mistakes as the people you are refuting make in making strawman arguments.

For instance, #4

Yes, masks have been proven to help in an individual basis. But masks mandates have not been proven to lower infection. For every report the CDC mentions, there are another couple that show there hasn't been a reduction in infections in cities with mass mask wearing compared to cities without mass mask wearing.

#5

The argument isn't that kids don't spread it at all, but that it is significantly less, and it is significantly less dangerous for kids.

#8

If the purpose is to convince people, then why include inflammatory statements about Moshe Rabeinu? Kol haomer... Eino ela toeh. You can make the point of being mekabel es haemes without such statements.

#9

Suicide isn't the only sacrifice, and from what I've read, suicide numbers tend to lag a significant amount of time, so I'd hold off on taking that victory lap. Minimizing all the other sacrifices isn't doing "your side" by favors.

But perhaps most of all, I know it's a draft, but there isn't even one shred of evidence for any of your assertions.

I agree with most of what you're saying, and I think a list of accurate information with answers to common questions is useful, just not in a way that discounts legitimate differing opinions, belittles questioners, or exaggerates.

Re: Czar Cuomo
I think the Torah allows for marriage between one man and more than one woman.

It still defines marriage as one man and one woman :P

על כן יעזוב איש את אביו ואת אמו ודבק באשתו

PG can add nekudos....

Re: Retirement Funds
There are many variables to calculate, such as FICA. local, state and federal. ETR is the truest measure.
Firstly, ETR is generally just the effective rate of federal income taxes, not all the others. Though, maybe you were referring to the effective rate with all taxes included.

In any case, I still fail to understand how it's the truest measure, as opposed to basing it off of the top brackets.

Re: SBA PPP and EIDL Small Business Loans (some money is forgivable) Dear SBA borrower,

According to our records, you received a COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to help your business weather the financial hardships brought on by the pandemic. These loans were previously limited to six months of economic injury up to a maximum of $150,000. The SBA recently announced a policy change that significantly increases loan limits up to 24 months of economic injury with a maximum loan amount of $500,000.

We are reaching out to inform you that the SBA's new increased loan limits for the COVID-19 EIDL program are now in effect and you may be eligible to receive additional loan funds. Please be advised that for loan amounts over $25,000, SBA will continue to take a security interest in business assets evidenced by a general security agreement and UCC filing. SBA will also require an unsecured personal guarantee for loan amounts over $200,000 from any individual with 20 percent or more ownership. Real estate collateral will not be required for any loans of $500,000 or less.

As a reminder, SBA announced last month that we are extending the first payment due date for all loans until 2022. For COVID-19 EIDL loans made in calendar year 2020, the first payment due date is extended until 24 months from the date of the note, and for loans made in calendar year 2021 the first payment due date is extended until 18 months from the date of the note. Loan interest continues to accrue during the deferment period, and a loan increase will not further extend your first payment due date.

Follow these instructions if you wish to request a loan increase:

Send email to CovidEIDLIncreaseRequests@sba.gov
Use subject line "EIDL Increase Request for [insert your 10-digit application number]"
Be sure to include in the body of your email identifying information for your current loan including application number, loan number, business name, business address, business owner name(s), and phone number.
Important: Do not include any financial documents or tax records with your initial request. You will receive a follow up email notification if we need additional documents.
We will process increase requests in the order they are received. Due to the expected high volume of incoming requests, it may be several weeks before you receive a response from SBA on next steps to follow. Please do not resend multiple requests if you do not hear back right away as the extra emails could slow down the overall response time.

If you have any questions regarding the COVID-19 EIDL program, or SBA's other COVID relief program, please visit our website at SBA.gov/relief for the most current updates.

We look forward to assisting with your recovery from this pandemic.
