Re: Rubashkin freed from prison.
People are saying all over, while I'm pretty darn certain, it completely fabricated.
Yet every idiot hears it and believes it.

Standard restaurant tactic
True, I take back what I implied.
I'll give an example, one of us were going to buy his most expensive sandwich, and was specifying what he wanted, so he said to "get xx which is half price and you'll like better if you don't want those items"

I tried searching. If i book a few nights using chase points and I am a Hiton Gold, will they honor the Gold status to get free breakfast?
chase is considered a paid rate. They usually include breakfast just double check when you are booking

It's considered a paid rate which comes with breakfast but also considered 3rd party booking so won't get points and won't honor your status

Re: PSA: DO NOT BANK WITH CHASE OR YOUR CREDIT CARDS MAY GET CLOSED! I don't know why it's so hard for everyone here to understand how banking with chase can lead to a review and a shutdown. Even if you think that what you are depositing into and using your bank account for is completely normal, Chase is being a little crazy right now and I would avoid using them for anything that I didn't absolutely have to. Call me crazy and tell me I'm worrying for no reason but I'm trying to be as careful as I can with Chase right now and I suggest most people do the same.

Re: PSA: DO NOT BANK WITH CHASE OR YOUR CREDIT CARDS MAY GET CLOSED! PSA: Chase doesn't like checks from buying groups going into your personal checking account ( don't know about business )

I got a letter stating that I have to call the compliance Dept to update info. on my account, and if not they'll close my account's.

They specifically asked me about 4 large checks from a few different buying groups - which is what prompted the  review.

Was told that Accounts are ok now, but I preemptively closed all my accounts.

As Searchguy said, it's just not worth it.

Be careful out there folks

Haven't had verification code issues with USAA. Couldn't find Zelle (QP) on the main site, only use it with their app. But the funds availability is great, the ability to temporarily increase ATM limit is great. ATM fee refunds are great. High mobile deposit limits. Plain desktop scanner deposit option. And I really love the ACH hub (which also helps avoid fees with other banks that have a direct deposit requirement for avoiding fees).
Don't get me wrong I love the bank. Best free account I ever got near. But the verification code each time I try opening just the app is a real PITA.

Re: Montreal Master Thread
how long is the wait by the border going to montreal on average? do they do anything more than scanning your passport?

Expect delays on Sundays afternoon/evening.

Here is a link to check the wait time (it's the 'St-Bernard-de-Lacolle' border crossing), it's updated hourly.

If you go by car they usually just ask for papers (if you're a US or Canadian passport holder), if you go by bus, most of the times they ask you to go down with your luggage.

Re: New Coin Deal
Agreed. It really hurt when I sent my coin to the company I committed to for a commision a fraction of what I could make now (and I would be lying if I said I didn't briefly consider not sending it...), but a deal's a deal - my word is worth far more than a few hundred dollars - and for the record, I would assume that the value of the reputation of the company is the same to its owner - they would honor their commitment if the value dropped, too.

Quality of Airline which is better. I have flight EWR - Vienna - TLV on Austrian Air business class. I could change it to Lufthansa, is it worthwhile?
Vienna is a very small Airport pretty convenient for a stopover, nice lounge also

FRA/MUC are much bigger
Personally would stick with OS.

I flew Lufthansa B, I can attest @ 6' my  feet had almot no room to move when fully flat. From pics of Austrian B it looks like they are a bit more roomy.

The "Don't Dos" of Credit Cards Figured this thread would be a great resource for all, to compile a list of things spanning from super obvious, to not so obvious, that you might want to avoid doing with your credit cards. This would be the place to post your DPs as to what got you shut down, or the like.

I'll start with a simple one. Avoid large out of pattern purchases. Never a good idea to put a lot more than the usual spend on your card in a short span of time. this earned me a FR

Re: 2019 Israeli election
It is official that he will be Prime Minister, how many seats he gets is not official.  I am shocked by Zeut's and Bennetts destruction. Shaked aligned herself with the wrong person.
Zehut wasn't destroyed, it was never more than a cloud of smoke (pun intended). The non-commitment to support either support Netanyahu or Gantz definitely didn't help anyone who wanted to get in.

As for the New Right, they didn't really put forth a compelling story. They are seen as spineless opportunistic troublemakers that eventually do the right thing. So if my choice is between Shaked and another vote that might get Ben Gvir in, I am sure many would choose the latter.

Kosher Miami has one for their establishment. As you move North it will not help you but for most of the restaurants South it’s a nice feature

Re: The 13th Global Siyum Hashas of Daf YomiAgudath Israel of America.

The guy was singing Ani maamim right after the tribute to the kedoshim and the guys in bleachers behind him or waiving like showing up on a sports screen.

Yeah I'm a little sensitive.. I get it, it's a big simcha

Why are you always so concerned with what other people are doing? Why does everyone have to get the same meaning out of something that you did? Why ruin such a beautiful and moving experience for yourself worrying about other people? I didn't even watch the screen most of that performance, I had my eyes closed thinking about what it meant to have almost 100k frum Jews of all stripes gathered to celebrate the continuity of Torah and Torah Judaism just 75 years after Hitler tried to wipe all of that out. The video tribute and following songs were one of the most moving things I've been a part of in my life. It's not often you get to really feel what it means to be a part of something as truly great and awesome as klal Yisroel and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Honestly I find it sad that whatever meaning you got out of this was overshadowed by what other people were doing. I hope that by the next siyum you are as taken in by the beauty of what we've accomplished as a nation as I was that you won't even notice what someone else is doing or not doing.

Re: The 13th Global Siyum Hashas of Daf YomiAgudath Israel of America.
To me this event was very disappointing to say the least. Long uninteresting speeches in freezing cold weather with no food and barely any drinks I wonder how people survived there for so long. They should get some Heimishe chevre to run the show...
With regard to the cold weather, I'm not sure why that disappointed you. We're you expecting 65 degrees in January? How would the organizers control that exactly? We're you expecting food that wasn't advertised? Could you not bring your own food. Obviously, the quality of the speeches is subjective, but from what I've heard, most thought that at least a few of the speeches were inspiring/interesting.

Walk a few blocks down 41st.  It works in the main area. Also, sometimes that screen pops up for a moment then disappears. Play around with it a bit.
Tip: if it won't allow your destination address, put in anything else, and then ask the driver to take you as close as he can to your destination.

Re: Maimonidies Can everyone please refrain from putting out stories that aren't true. Think before you post.
As for maimonides they are doing whatever they can under the circumstances. I see first hand how overwhelming the situation is and how every staff member in the hospital is overworked but trying their best.

Sorry for going off topic. You do seem to have medical knowledge, and your avatar also indicates it. Care to share if you currently work or volunteer and have first hand information?
I do work in the field, I don't have first hand knowledge of this story, but I do know what goes on in hospitals to a degree, and I definitely would like to fix hospital problems there are so many but real issues are what needs to be brought up, because just always degrading and bashing the hospitals and Medical staff who risk their lives to keep everyone safe is wrong.

Re: Unemployment Help
Use the secure message center instead. One of the preset requests is to backdate claims
I've been getting this question a lot. Here are basic instructions for NY:

1) Log into your UI account
2) Go to your messaging inbox
3) Click "Compose New" from the dropdown menu in the lefthand upper corner
4) Select "Certifications and Payments" as subject
5) Select "How do I claim benefits for a prior week" as secondary subject
6) In the body of your message explain that your last date of employment was X (should match that of your application), and that you haven't certified claims from that date til your first claim date, and are requesting back pay for those weeks

Note: The DOL is overwhelmed, so don't be surprised if it takes them 2-3 weeks to process. You might get a response, or you might just see the extra payments in your Payment History Schedule (Unemployment Services> View Payment History)

Re: Corona virus and your shul
Well that went south fast...

You have to understand what went into the original battle to close shuls.

There were doctors crying, begging, pleading... Doctors who would tell you to eat on yom Kippur, a lo sase m'doraisa And you are required to listen to them..

And rabbanim were ignoring these doctors.

Why did this become a religious battle? I really hate how everyone draws the lines of some kind of milchamos shmad.

As @hvaces42  has said in the past, every shnook is trying to be the Moser nefesh of the generation. Go be Moser nefesh in your basement, go fast Friday to Friday.. go burn your house down with your fingernails I don't care

Show me where minyan is yihareg v'al yaavor.

Stop making us into bad people, it's stupid... Besides having all doctors on our side, we have many of the biggest rabbanim, Roshey yshivos and admorim .

The Rav of bnai brak the gaon Rav aizik landau said that your tefillos in a distanced minyan only goes up If you are wearing a mask

Re: COL video about Maimonidies, a must watch
When you say overwhelmed, what do you mean?  Bc the ship that was supposed to help the hospitals wasn't needed and left nyc
it was needed, the criteria to get PT's on it was slim they weren't accepting PT's easily. IMHO the ship was there for show that the federal government "cares" but that's a different rabbit hole to go down.

April 27, 2020, 10:39:27 AM
Re: COL video about Maimonidies, a must watch
The federal gov cared but there prediction was better than NY prediction, just look at the  ventilators, how many did Cuomo ask for? How many did he really need and use?
I'm not saying Cuomo did a good job, he made mistakes at every turn. I think there are flaws on every level but if the comfort and javits center took even half their capacity the amount of problems coming from the hospitals would be significantly less.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
where I daven, you'll first get a long state for talking. If that doesn't work davening will be on pause (chazaras hashatz, hallel, krias hatorah, etc.) until you are quite. Quite a few awkward moments...

wait there is a way to approach this issue without yelling at people? I remember davening in a shul that had a no collectors during davening policy to help enhance the atmosphere. One time someone came in to collect and halfway through was thrown out by a member yelling and shouting at him for coming in during davening. I wonder which was more of a distraction to the kehilla and if the davening of that tzibbur accomplished anything that day.

April 29, 2020, 02:50:08 PM
Re: Corona virus and your shul Talking of a no collecting policy. Famous story of the Noda B'Yehuda. The Kehila asked him to sign a new takana that collectors shouldn't be allowed to go around to collect, as it disturbs the people, one who want's to give Tzadaka should go over to them. So he looked at the sheet and said "This isn't a new takana which needs my signature, it's an old takana from the וועד ארבע ארצות", when he saw how they looked at him surprised, he explained "Yes, from סדום ועמורה אדמה וצבויים.."

Re: Corona virus and your shul
No one is being stopped from participating in their religion. IMHO it comes down to if places of worship are essential. That will be hard one to win.
How is a place of worship not essential?! It was put in as the FIRST amendment! Number one!

Just in case you need to be reminded of the exact wording:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Re: Corona virus and your shul
If the chazzan and maggid shiur of the largest Young Israel in the country are not on board, odds are you have an issue with buy in. Were the prominent members of the shul consulted/ given a voice? Or was it strong armed by one group of the shul leadership? If so, some soul searching is in order rather than a sledgehammer.

Oh common. Its not the American revolution.

They have issues in the past? Maybe.. I dunno, I don't care.

Listen, if the Rav makes a takana and yechidim decide they know better, to quote blazing saddles "luzem gayen"

What kinda junk is this. So now you're defending people who go against the Rabbi?

I'm done.

I stand b'aimah u'bepachad in front of my Rav. You guy's call me apikores when it suites you.

A Rav is a chain in mesora. You can't just pick and choose. When there was a dispute Rosh Hashanah 2 8-9 . When rabban gamliel told Rabbi yehoshua to show up on his Yom Kippur.

Listen, you remind me of the alte kakers here in Miami I knew in the 90's. They'd learn gemara on shabbas while smoking a cigarette

Re: Violent protests erupt across the country
If you can't look into their minds then you should just keep quiet. You need to be able to understand their point of view to have an opinion about it. Until then you are viewing from your experiences and not theirs. Even after, there is only so much you can see, but the first step is always to try and understand why they feel the way they do
I don't think any of us can ascertain what's going on in their heads. But in any case regardless of what it is, the rioting has nothing to do with any of it. And every single one of them should probably be charged with domestic terrorism. Look at videos, thats literally what it is

Only difference is that in March, hospitals actually killed people outright.

I quoted it above.
I'm surprised by you. Is it really so difficult to have some small adjustments for a year or so to save lives? Are young people so self centered these days that they can't fathom some small inconvenience for the sake of the greater good? Is this the generation we have raised?
