if trump gives us vouchers i dont care if he goes around the whole day grabbing *****

I'm pretty sure you're just making an irreverent joke (something I am guilty of on this forum as well) but if you are serious, then I want to tell you in all seriousness that what you wrote is an inherent contradiction. You want vouchers in order to send your child to private school, which I am assuming means yeshiva, which I am assuming is in order to learn Torah, which is because I am assuming you want him to be a good Jew. But all of that becomes irrelevant if in order to get it we have to desensitize ourselves. As I said, it's an inherent contradiction. I'll get off my soap box now.

Would you rather kill dogs or criminals?

ARE YOU SURE??

Is there anyone specific you would like to kill?

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread @JTZ - I apologize for the wall of text, but I feel this is important context to provide for the discussion.

Most of us on this forum are visibly Jewish. If we don't have beards and hats, we have kippas and tzitzis, etc. I would be surprised if the number of people here who have had an anti-Semitic experience is less than 100%. The stats show that Jews are on the receiving end of more hate crimes than any other group.

I've gotten middle fingers in Johannesburg, been spat on in Durban, and often walk over a swastika etched into the sidewalk near my in law's home in one of the Mid-Western United States. When I was in Yeshiva in Paris for a year, friends of mine where beaten up (This was almost 15 years ago - now it is MUCH worse).

I was spat on in an airport when I was 13. At least a dozen people saw it. The spitter was more than double my age. No one did or said a thing.
Those fist fights in Paris? Some were on full trains. Again, no one did or said a thing.

I have never reported a hate crime. No one I know ever has - and I know people who have experienced far more violent things then I have.

I live in Brooklyn, a truly liberal and hip city (Hilary Clinton's headquarters). Swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti are common occurrences - in alley ways, on subway platforms, and more.  When a group of thugs threw rocks at a school bus filled with little Jewish kids it didn't even make local news. A Chassidic guy was left unconscious under a car one night after a spate of anti-Semitic events - it only made the news when a few hundred of us marched to the precinct the next day.

You know what made news? When a swastika was painted the day after Trump won.

Weird, huh?

That Muslims and Neo-Nazis beat us is to be expected. But, in a sense, you know what is worse? Leftist, liberal self-righteous hypocrites who find it ok to mock, ridicule and antagonize "Ultra-Orthodox Right Wing Fundamentalist" Jews - while throwing fits of rage at every perceived micro-aggression against any other minority or race.

For example:

Gentrification is a big deal. Neither I nor any of my friends can afford to buy a home in our neighborhood. Renting an apt is nigh impossible. But whenever you read or hear about gentrification in Crown Heights, you will find out about Chassidic Landlords (Slumlords) who are mistreating and pushing out the Black community.  Of course lower and middle class blacks are being pushed out. So are the Jews! But it is ok for the media to paint the Chassidic community with the broad anti-Semitic brush of being hook nosed landlords cheating the poor blacks out of their money and homes. In actuality, it is market forces being driven by young artisanal, hipster farm-to-table vegans which are responsible.

This anti-Semitic attitude directly contributes to the violent antisemitism I sampled above, just as Al Sharpton’s “diamond merchant” rhetoric led to riots and murder.

This is just one tiny example that I deal with in NYC, one of the largest concentrations of visible Jews on the planet, in the shining pride of Western civilization. In other places, it is far, far worse. (Look at Jeremy Corbyn in the UK for a start, and we can go from there.)

So that's why we don't care about hate crime stats. We know firsthand that they don't even begin to tell the story. That's why we are so skeptical of leftists and the media speaking of hate crimes - we have a long history of them not only ignoring hate crimes committed against us, but agitating and prodding those who do us actual harm.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
+1, less time making food and setting up=More quality time with kids and more quality time with your spouse when the kids are in camp.

People aren't really speaking the same language here. Someone who makes pesach at home with each kid contributing hand made arts and crafts and divrei torah to the table, helping to bake the pesach dishes, portion out the matzah and Maror, taking turns serving & bringing washing water for zeidy etc., setting up props for the makos and acting them out, marching around the house to bitzeis yisroel, spending most of yom tov (and chol hamoed if you focus on the right venues) focused on the kids without too many distractions etc. there is no way they can appreciate the hotel scene. I've had guests come to my home who've been to some pretty decent pesach programs with their parents when they were growing up and they wistfully remark that they never knew what they were missing by not having experienced pesach at home.

On the other hand, those who go to the programs can't fathom how one can enjoy yom tov if they would have to non stop cook clean up and serve and be stuck in the house with nothing exciting for the kids to really do and hours of work with no down time for the parents for themselves.

Then again there are families who stay home and have a stressful time of it and really would do better in a hotel environment.

Bottom line is there is nothing like an at home pesach experience when it is done right, but not everyone is able to pull it off in the right atmosphere and a program is actually not a bad option for them.....

Lastly there are the programs where to goal is non stop hedonism, gorging on culinary dishes and dubious entertainment options for eight days straight while the kids are whisked out of sight so mom and dad can give their undevided attention to their pleasure trip while acknowledging that it happens to be pesach with a token Seder and a lecture or two where they are passive participants. I have nothing but pity( was going to say contempt but really pity is much more appropriate)for these folks because their choice of venue is just a symptom of the fact that they have no idea of the significance of the unbelievable holiday they are turning their backs on, a lifestyle where success is measured in terms of things and status, rather than relationships and personal growth, or both.

Re: Cell-phones/talking in Shul
One thing I did when I was an avel (and am trying to continue) is leave my cellphone at home or in my car.  I found that I davened better.  - even if the cellphone is totally turned off if it was in my pocket it was a distraction.  I figured if I am going to daven for the amud for 11 months, let me at least try to daven like a mentsh.
This deserves its own thread.

When I go for Shachris, I bury my phone in the tallis bag. It has happened to me that I forgot it there, and had to go back to get it, but being distracted in shul is by far worse. I would have loved to have cell-phone lockers in 770 (and have spoken to the Gaboim a few times about it, including offering to sponsor), so as to have a convenient solution for Mincha and Maariv.

IMHO, cell phones and talking in shul are major factors in the OTD pandemic. Think about it, if you were to go in from on the SCOTUS and be the only one in the chamber with the justices, given the opportunity to plead your case, would you have a side conversation? Would you allow your phone to ring, or even vibrate? What if you were to get an audience with Bill Gates, one-on-one to ask for participation from his foundation in a project. Would you have a side conversation? Would you allow your phone to ring, or even vibrate? What if Baron Trump would go into his father, who would stop everything in order to be present with his son, and give him full undivided attention, would Baron dare to have a side conversation or have a phone ring while his father has his eyes, ears and thoughts 100% towards him?

When we go into shul, we are one-on-one with Hashem. The above examples don't even come close to what that reality is!

ETA: I just added emphasis above to stress that we all know about דעת עליון and דעת תחתון. While in our physical eyes, material things might seem more real and possibly durable than things we only see בעיני השכל, the reality is the exact opposite!

Re: Master Thread of Pet Peeves
if ur trying for vocabulary dont start a sentence with an "and".

if If
ur you're
trying for vocabulary  - this makes no sense considering the criticism which follows. You likely mean to say "trying to show off proficiency in English writing or grammar." Beginning the sentence with "and" would be a grammatical issue, not one of vocabulary. Additionally, it appears what @as2 was discussing had little, if anything, to do with vocabulary or grammar.
dont don't (you are also missing a comma before don't)
start a sentence with an "and". - This is a rule that does not exist beyond what kids are told in elementary school. And if you don't want to take my word for it, check the dictionary, or GIYF.

Basically, if you are going to criticize a comment's grammar, wording or spelling on an online forum, it would be best to first get some Windex for your glass house.

Re: Something Fishy's Trip Reports Thread Hmmmm.

Today's XKCD:

Playing around with Google maps, we discovered that the Hill Air Force base in Odgen, UT maintains a small AF museum. We figured we could at least get some interesting shots of the planes and missiles on display.

We got there only to find it closed for the day. The planes and everything were still clearly visible on the other side of the fence, so we drove up to the guard at the main gate to the base (which was right next to the museum entrance) to find out if we’re allowed to shoot over the fence. I parked the car a short distance from the guard booths, and walked over. The guard got visibly nervous the closer I got, and had his gun out of the holster by the time I came up to him. As soon as it was clear that I’m not planning on blowing myself up, he relaxed and told me that we could take as many pictures as we wanted so long as we don’t point our cameras in the direction of the base or security installations.

Great, right? So we get out of the car and get a couple of shots. Not two minutes go by when we are surrounded by 3 military police jeeps, lights flashing and sirens blaring. The biggest MP marches over and tells us not to move, and that the base commander in on his way over.  :o :o :o

We had to wait just a minute or two for him to show up, but it felt like an eternity. We had already said goodbye to catching our flight home, not to mention getting home before shabbos (this was late Thursday). And this was already the best case scenario… Finally the base commander shows up, and to our surprise (and relief!) turns out to be this young, easygoing guy. He wanted to know who we were and where we’re from, what were we doing in the area, etc., etc., all standard questions. We had to show him some of the pictures we took on our trip, but at that point he was pretty convinced that we didn't represent Al-Qaeda. We explained that we had specifically asked for, and had been given, permission from the guard at the gate.

This got him mad. "Either he gives you permission and lets you be, or he doesn't and calls security! What's he think he's doing, giving you permission and then calling for backup...". He promised he'll "take care" of the guard later. (What we assume happened was that the guard probably figured we'll pull out some phones, or at most a little point and shoot, but when we took out serious equipment and long lenses he panicked.) In any case, he explained that whenever there's a "security incident" he has to write a full report, so we now have our names on some government list as potential terrorists or who knows what :o.

Any advice of this kind, in response to a question like:

Is bad advice.

(not that the question is such a great one to be posted in these forums, as pointed out above, but attempting to answer the question, without following up with additional questions in order to get a complete picture, would probably be malpractice by anyone with a license to give such advice or sell any investment.)

Re: Interesting Articles...
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/17/opinion/if-you-could-be-someone-else-would-you.html

Don't try to be someone else , be who you are because everyone else is taken. @myi
To add to this here's a beautiful little story..

Value your life

A little boy went to his grandfather and asked him, "What is the value of life grandfather?"

The grandfather gave him a stone and said, "First I want you to find out the value of this stone, but don't sell it."

The boy took the stone to a fruit vendor and asked him what its value would be.

The vendor saw the shiny stone and said, "How about you can take a dozen apples and give me the stone."

The boy apologized and said that his grandfather had asked him not to sell it.

He went ahead and found a vegetable vendor.

"What could be the value of this stone?" he asked the vegetable vendor.

He saw the shiny stone and said, "How about you take a sack of potatoes and give me that stone."

The boy again apologized and said he couldn't sell it.

Further ahead, he went into a jewelry shop and asked the value of the stone.

The jeweler saw the stone under a lens and said, "I will give you one million dollars for this stone."

The boy was surprised, but explained that he couldn't sell the stone.

Further ahead, the boy saw a large shop of precious stones and asked the value of this stone.

When the precious stone shop owner was an expert in these matters. When he saw the stone, he lay down a cloth and put it on it.

Then he walked in circles around the stone and bent down and scratched his head in front of it. "From where did you bring this priceless uncut diamond from?" he asked.

"Even if I sell everything I own, my whole shop, I won't be able to purchase this priceless diamond."

Stunned and confused, the boy returned to his grandfather and told him what had happened.

His grandfather said,

"The answers you got from the fruit vendor, the vegetable vendor, the jeweler and the precious stone's expert explain the value of our life.

You may be a precious stone, even priceless, but, people will value you based on their own limited perceptions, beliefs, motives and expectations. How they value you says more about them than it does about you!

For this reason it is important to value yourself. Respect yourself. No longer indulge in meaningless comparisons with others. For you are unique, original and the only one of your kind in this universe. This is the value of your life.

Associate ever more with those who recognize your true value and ever less with those who see you just as a means to fulfill their own dreams and ambitions.

May you value the diamond in yourself and recognize the diamond in others as well.

Maybe you need a 12 step program to help you with that.  Yes self esteem is a product of being told you're not good enough. It can be worked on and changed. It is a very deep character defect.
