Re: How to make a hotkey for data entry?
Is there a way to make a hotkey on desktop for data entry. Say I use "1234" in different programs and forms. Can a hotkey be made for this where it will enter "1234" no matter which program or form I am using?
I hope the word is not 'Kool-Aid'...

Re: DeBlasio Tweets out fake false news, this time sticking up for the NYPD!
When you only state part of a statue and take it out of context should I believe otherwise.

You posted: “shall apply only when audible signals are sounded from any said vehicle while in motion by bell, horn, siren, ”

The statue states: Except for an authorized emergency vehicle operated as a police vehicle or bicycle, the exemptions herein granted to an authorized emergency vehicle shall apply only when audible signals are sounded from any said vehicle while in motion by bell, horn, siren...
Since you are the go to guy for reading this type of stuff you care to explain to them what that statue means? That won't believe me.  :)
You might what to read the statue again.
I never said this. You and others are saying it is illegal for him to go through a red light without sirens on. That is not correct according to the statue.

Sorry, but I just had to :D

Re: Excel Help and Problems
I have 12345 in the first cell. I want every cell under it to increment 1 each time. Easiest way to do it? I need thousands.
If the first cell is A1, then B1 would be =A1+1. Then select B1 and you'll see a tiny box in the bottom right of the cell. Drag that down as far as you want.

Re: Excel Help and Problems The Stop Value needs to be the max value you want. So if you want 100 numbers, your stop value is 12445.

Over here it's not running at all since the stop value is lower than your start value.

Re: 2019 Israeli election
So no majority means yet another election? WOW could you imagine if we had that here? We would run out of Kool-Aid.  :)

Not quite - essentially the President of the country will recommend to one of the two candidates to form a government - for a bunch of reasons, it's likely that he will turn to Bibi to do that - so he has a few weeks to broker a deal.

Can you explain in terms of our left, right and center? Who is who?

That's definitely complicated, but on a very simplistic level (I'm sure many will argue with these points):

The Right:
Likud - Bibi's party, the 'standard' right-wing party. Politically conservative, and religiously neutral/right leaning.
Shas - Sefardic Religious party - politically right, religiously right. Primary leadership and constituents are jews from Africa/France/Middle East Descent
UTJ (United Torah Judaism) - politically right, religiously right. Primary leadership and constituents are jews from Central/Northern European and American Descent
Yemina - a smaller politically right and religiously right-leaning party who's leaders (Shaked and Bennett) broke away from Likud

The "Center":
Blue and White - led by Gantz. This is a coalition of 3 parties, including the centrist Yesh Atid

Jewish Home - Lieberman's party - they are politically conservative, but somewhat anti-religious (for example, they are in favor of ending the draft exemptions for Charedim, but toe a hard line on the Palestinians, Iran, etc.) They are the outlier, because he politically disagrees with the left, and religiously with the right.

The Left (All politically left, and most are (at least) left-leaning when it comes to religion)
Joint Arab List - This is 4 smaller parties that generally represent that arab population and have Israeli Arab members of knesset. (Israeli Arab = Muslim or Christian Arabs that live within the 1967 borders and have full citizenship).
Labor - The party of Shimon Peres and Yitzchak Rabin, that's fallen off of the map. The old guard Israeli Left
Democratic Camp  - A coalition of parties that are the old-school Israeli "Extreme Left" - including Meretz.

Re: Honestly, honestly do you feel smartphones have improved your quality of life? I think the real question is are you happier since you adopted a smartphone. There is little doubt that we are more efficient and productive than earlier generations in good part due to smartphones ( despite the hours of time they cause us to waste)- remember waiting in line for hours just to pick up textbooks from B&N, or buying products off the shelf  that looked good but broke in no time because there were no user reviews available?

But are we happier, more satisfied, more thinking people? In my experience the answer is a resounding NO.

Re: US Politics/2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread My take:
This whistleblower's allegation is very serious (should be obvious) and definitely warrants an investigation (should also be obvious). There are not enough facts out there yet to make a determination as to how deep this investigation should go and definitely not enough to know how factual the allegations are. That the allegations are hearsay is not relevant to this. Hearsay can be a good reason to investigate. The issue is that so many have already reached their verdict of either guilty or not guilty which by some strange coincidence is almost perfectly correlated with other opinions of theirs about the president. Every single fact is being interpreted to fit into the verdict they have already reached.

"better" is a vague term... While you might find something with better specs one might say (and possibly rightfully) that in general, the ThinkPad model is a better built-quality.

Re: Hyatt Awards And Upgrades Master Thread
Hyatt is telling me night is available on points but not for an award cert. Is that right?

Are you searching a block of nights in a row, and the hotel shows points availability for all nights?  If this is true, but when you look night by night, one or more nights don’t show availability, then the property is playing with availability by marrying nights together under stay minimums.  This has happened to me many times.  The easiest way around this is to search one night at a time and isolate which nights are under the stay minimum for availability, then book those nights together under points, and finally call Hyatt to have them reduce the reservation to the single night you actually want.  This unfortunately won’t help with cert only bookings, as single night availability is required, and even when calling in Hyatt often can’t convert the points booking to a cert if the reservation system is still using minimum stay requirements, etc.  This happened to me this month for a Hyatt Regency Austin stay.

No.

It just shows again why CNN and MSNBC are fake news. They are outraged, they cant stop speaking about this SCANDAL. By now we have all the same Dems, Biden, Nadler and others who are screaming racist using the same term by the Clinton impeachment. And CNN and MSNBC did not seem to think back then its a problem. Oh, because they were Dems. FAKE NEWS@
CNN and MSNBC are biased putzes.

Also, Donald Trump tried to use USA dollars to get a foreign nation to announce an investigation into his political rival, textbook grounds for impeachment.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
So you agree under this scumbag president the country is growing further apart than it has ever been!!!
After the last few pages I don't really want to bring up any previous presidents but in this context I think I have to. The country was pitted against each other under Obama because it was good for him politically. That divide grew exponentially through BO's 2nd term. And Trump capitalized on it to win and has pushed the 2 sides even further apart.
There have been times in our history that the nation has been at odds having nothing to do with who was in the White House. But I think the last 10 years have been caused by the 2 people who were supposed to lead the country. Hopefully there can be some unity (even while there is strong disagreement) soon but unfortunately I just don't see how that can happen in the near future without a major unifying event which would probably have to be a catastrophe.

Re: US Politics/2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
Judge Learned Hand:
Any one may so arrange his affairs that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which will best pay the Treasury; there is not even a patriotic duty to increase one's taxes.

Gregory v. Helvering, 69 F.2d 809, 810 (2d Cir. 1934)

Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one's affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions. To demand more in the name of morals is mere cant.

Commissioner v. Newman, 159 F.2d 848, 851 (2d Cir. 1947) - dissenting opinion
Are these judges average people?

We know that many of the people who paylittle to no taxes are going to find it sinister that someone wealthy only paid 1000x more taxes and double the tax rate and not higher than that.

Re: PC friday question of the day.
When I look at the “common sense” that prevails outside of religion I see where that common sense leads to: broken homes, dysfunction, billions of people behaving as if in a rat race with little purpose in life, rampant depression and despair, widespread opioid and other drug abuse to escape the meaningless life people lead, and callousness towards human life in general. That’s  just the tip of the iceberg.

I’ll take my religion any day. Thank you.
Pretty sure CV would call those things outside the realm of common sense. Or contrary to common sense.

But that’s just the point. People think “why do we need religion with all its micro details and minutiae, just use common sense.” Yet it’s clear that common sense with no outside objective guiding principles leads to disaster.
Reread @CountValentine statement. He never said we don't need religion. He said religion needs common sense. And with that I agree.

Re: US Politics/2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
Can't wrap my head around this impeachment thing. Dem's are preaching away that selective investigation is the worst offense on the planet. They agree that the investigation didn't happen, but even the 'attempt' is heinous. In the same breath they don't even care about the underlying crime of the Bidens which has plenty crumb trails. Isn't that the ultimate oxymoron? Fishing and subpoenaing after every Trump misdeed anyone can dream of is not selective investigation?
Selective investigation: Opponents against us
Legitimate concern: Us against opponents.

This goes both directions.

Close to $600 on eBay now and rising....

I agree with the criticism of Dan on these coin deals. While exclusive advertising for a certain product is fine, censoring the forum for any discussion goes too far and does a disservice to the DansDeals community imo.

There were plenty of offers @ $200 and even a couple for $400-$500.

Certainly it can be justified on some level but it is a disservice nonetheless.

Who censored the forum? Because I'm seeing plenty of discussion of other offers here and coins for sale on the GFST board.

Re: Maldives Master Thread Just came back from the st Regis a few weeks ago.

Our butler was Tom and was amazing, Nadeeb left and Tom was trained in by him.

It seems they started charging $35++ to warm up your kosher meals. They charged once for lunch and then dinner. It was $35++ even though we heated up for 2 portions.

They will be starting to bring in kosher meals shortly, I don’t have more details but our Butler was very excited to tell me.

Snorkeling wasn’t too great at the resort, but the scuba diving was really good.

Random note they only have 4 garden villas and the pools are more private then the beach villas.

I was at the Conrad Maldives about 3 years ago in a base room.

To compare a little

1) owb is extremely overrated over a regular villa.

2) the Conrad is significantly larger, they also have 3 islands as oppose to 1 of the st Regis (although 1 is for staff only).

3) I felt that at the st Regis all the beach villas and 2 bedroom villas were extremely close to each other and didn’t give so much privacy, and to a lesser extent the base owb as well, compared to the Conrad which being in a base room was excellent privacy and the next step up is a room with a pool that is fully private.

4) diamond status by Hilton is treated higher then a platinum member by Marriot, although I wasn’t diamond at the time of the stay.

5) The st Regis rooms were definitely nicer and fancier although I believe the Conrad has been updated since our stay.

6) Both hotels know about kosher and are very accommodating.

7) The reef at the Conrad is significantly better then the st Regis.

8) Both have butler service, however the ability to watsapp your butler at the st Regis is unbelievable!

9) This might sound funny but I found that at the st Regis is wasn’t as unique as the Conrad in regards that at the Conrad there are no other islands in sight vs the St Regis is surrounded by other local islands.

Bottom line, the St Regis is definitely more luxurious, however the Conrad is no slouch and now with the points rates at the St Regis vs the Conrad, the value is at the Conrad is much higher and easier to attain in my opinion.

Re: PC friday question of the day.
Since you offered.  :)
Is inflicting pain the proper way to stop a child from doing dangerous things (running across the street/touching a hot pot).
Short answer - not really.  There will always be contextual variables that come into play that can potentially impact any given behavioral outcome (and there are also individual differences in the ways we respond to different forms of consequences), but as a general rule, no - research indicates that punishment isn't generally all that effective in minimizing unwanted behavior unless there are several specific criteria met.

It should be added that corporal punishment, while legal, has been found to be the best predictor of aggression in children, and has been linked to lower levels of moral internalization and decreased mental health, including adolescent depression and social anxiety. I know this goes beyond your question, but is worth mentioning for those who go beyond the slap on the wrist when running in the street...

Back to the idea of punishment (or in the case of your question, "inflicting pain"), lab studies conducted on rats, monkeys, and humans demonstrate that it is almost impossible for punishment to successfully reduce an undesired behavior in real life. The way for punishment to actually reduce an undesired behavior is when it is:
-highly intense
-consistently applied
-no delay between the behavior and the punishment
-there are no competing rewards for the same behavior

So if you are extremely consistent, punish the child immediately and harshly, eliminate any social rewards for performing the behavior, then you may be ultimately successful at getting a child to stop performing the behavior. However, if if applied in this way, it is not an argument for inflicting pain, as a harsh punishment can be applied without doing so. Also, most people don't apply punishments in the way detailed above.

All this having been said, there are developmental psychologists on both sides of this argument. But the general consensus in the field is that positive reinforcement (rewarding positive behavior, making it more likely that it will occur again) is FAR more effective than punishment of any kind, especially negative punishment (which inflicting pain is).

Re: New Coin Deal
Ok he is matching a 300 offer. What offer is 300? Do you mean he is raising his offer (not matching)?

Yes, if you want to get into semantics, "raising" is probably a more appropriate word than matching

Here was his exact words:
Quote
Bottom line for all those who opted in and are reading this…
For those that would like to honor their commitment to PFS, so we in-turn can honor our commitments to our buyers… we have been bumping member’s payout up to $300 total. (I did one person’s to $337 as a unique case. I can’t do that across the board, sorry.) email us and we’ll raise yours to $300, no questions asked.

If you don’t want to honor the deal after reading this, please, grab your “courage” and email me stating that you read this and still don’t care, and i’ll close you out of the system. Again, no questions asked.

The message was clearly targeted towards those who were on the fence and haven't yet fulfilled their end of the deal. I was just offering props to PFS for doing the same to people like me who already have.
