You might want to do that. His waiters are good. However, they may be booked for Purim. In addition, they will not work for just an hour or two
Would need at least 5 hrs. Don't need good waiters, need good people.

Barry Lincoln's Summer 2016 Venice and Maldives Trip First off, I'd like to extend my hakaras hatov to the many dedicated DDFers who contributed valuable insights to the planning of this trip.  The purpose of the trip was to celebrate a milestone anniversary and it certainly did not disappoint.  Planning for the tip started in earnest in January 2016 when we conceived the idea to visit the Maldives as a once in a lifetime experience and plan a short stopover in Venice on the way out there.  While MLE was our destination, my wife had always wanted to visit Venice and if there was a way to make it all work, we would try.  Travel is generally a bit easier for us in the summer as our kids are spoken for between sleepaway camp and in-laws.

Flights
With that said, in mid-February I was able to secure EY-F (pre-devaluation) using 90k AA miles per ticket for our return trip MLE - AUH - JFK.  With EY-F serving as my anchor, in March I used some leftover Delta Skymiles (that I really had no intention of using) to book DL-Y from JFK to VCE for 30k per ticket (was upgraded at the gate to exit row seats so had sufficient room to stretch out).  Booked in April, our VCE-MLE flight took us through Istanbul on TK-J booked using 45k UA miles per ticket.  Our trip took us through IST about two weeks after the attempted coup in Turkey and needless to say, that made us somewhat nervous.

Hotels
Our first night (Sunday night) was spent on a DL 764 putting us in Venice the following morning (Monday).  Booked using 20k SPG points per night, our home for the next two nights was the Westin Europa and Regina in Venice.  We were booked into a Deluxe Double room which was sufficient for our needs.  More on the room later.  Wednesday night would be spent on-board a combination of TK flights (A321 and A333) on the way to MLE, arriving on Thursday midday.  The combination of TK's lounge in IST and business class accommodations on-board made the long trip bearable.  Beginning Thursday night, the next five nights would be spent at the Conrad, booked into their basic Beach Villa using a combination of 3 weekend night certificates and 190k HHonors points.  I accumulated the certificates and points over a 3 month period and was anxiously awaiting for everything to post.  Six weeks out and I was still waiting for my certs to hit.  They eventually hit my HHonors account and I quickly turned around and made the reservations.  [Sidenote: I had 4 of my 5 nights booked while waiting for a weekend certificate to hit my account.  When it finally hit, the last night was no longer available.  After several repeated attempts, Hilton still refused to help me, even though the night had been available.  I then called the Conrad Rangali directly and they were able to open a revenue room for me for that day which I immediately booked.  Over the following week, award availability opened up so I snagged the room for my last night and cancelled the revenue reservation so it all worked out in the end.]  Immediately after making my reservations with Conrad Rangali, I reached out to their reservations team to ask about paid upgrades to an OWV and was advised that there weren't any paid upgrades available for my stay. They would keep an eye out for me but couldn't guarantee anything.  Needless to say, I was somewhat disappointed but what more could I really do.  I wasn't about to postpone the trip although I did consider it at one point.

Food
In addition to our canvas cooler (more on that shortly), we brought a separate suit case for non-perishable foods.  Yes, maybe we went a bit overboard, but better safe than sorry.  In the suitcase, we had our non-perishable items (breakfast bars, protein bars, Trader Joe snacks, chips, Horizon shelf-stable milk, packages of tuna, mayo, challah rolls for Shabbos, box of matzos, grape juice, Pam spray olive oil, plastic silverware, paper plates, etc.).  Our plan in Venice was to make sure of places like Gam Gam, Gam Gam Goodies and Ghimmel Garden.  We are generally OK with a coffee/protein bar for breakfast, small snacks and either a late lunch or early dinner.  We also ordered 12 Pom meals mostly for dinner in MLE.  We transported the Pom meals in our 48-pack AO Canvas Cooler (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002YKQC56/ref=twister_B01HG5KTAC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) and three Cooler Shock freeze packs (https://www.amazon.com/Lg-Cooler-Freeze-Packs-x14/dp/B00V9ITMYC/ref=pd_sim_468_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=51srLPizjgL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=SN9B9YPDYRB8GX1Q7FNS).  In Venice, the folks at the Westin were happy to store our Pom meals in their freezer.  Upon our arrival at the Conrad, our meals were still frozen nearly 24 hours after leaving Venice.  We also brought a couple of packages of vacuum-packed deli and cheese.  I had connected with the Conrad in advance and they were happy to store and reheat our Pom meals.  They also provided, at our request, a brand new frying pan, chefís knife, spatula and cutting board, primarily so that we could take advantage of the Conradís ďfreeĒ breakfast.

To be continued with more details and pictures (hopefully sooner than later...)

What an admission! Any chance this media bias improves?

This is simultaneously infuriating and refreshing. Like a suspected cheating husband who finally admits to his wife that he was cheating and wants to change his ways. Infuriating to have what you suspected (but hoped deep in your heart wasn't true) expressly confirmed, but refreshing to have taken what might be the first step towards healing.

Qatar offering laptops in flight due to US ban Starting next week, Qatar Airways will offer Business and First Class passengers a free laptop loan during their flight to the US.

The news comes after the US banned passengers from carrying electronic devices on direct flights to the US from eight Muslim-majority countries.

In a statement, the Doha-based carrier said it has purchased a series of laptops to loan to customers travelling with them to the US. Passengers can use their devices right up until they arrive at the boarding gate at Dohaís Hamad International Airport. Here, they can transfer their data onto a USB drive before collecting one of the replacement laptops.

Qatar Airways CEO, Akbar Al-Baker, said: ďby providing this laptop loan service we can ensure that our passengers on flights to the US can continue to work whilst on board.Ē

A similar service is being proposed by fellow Gulf carriers, Emirates and Etihad Airways, who are also affected by the US ban.

Re: Iceland Master Thread
I just sent this email to Iceland air, let's see what their response will be.

To whom it may concern,

My name is xxxx xxxxx. My wife and I have booked a flight to Iceland departing Jan 9 2018 (xxxxxx) with your airline.

My wife and I are Orthodox Jews. As part of our travel itinerary, we always pre-order a Kosher meal.

Unfortunately, when we attempted to order a KSML (Kosher meal), we were told that Iceland Air does not offer this meal option. While it wouldnít be a big deal on a short flight, traveling 5.5 hours is a different story.

I was surprised because this has never happened before

In fact, what makes this more surprising is the fact that other airlines that do fly to Iceland offer Kosher meals. Examples of those airlines include United Airlines, Lufthansa, Britishairways, and Delta.

If I had known that you donít offer KSML, I surely wouldíve booked my flight with one of the airlines that do.

While it is too late for me to cancel my reservation, it is not too late for others.

The Rabbi in Iceland who I contacted was equally surprised since many people who eat kosher travel to Iceland. As a result, he told me that when asked, he will tell people who contact him to book their flight with a different airline.

Therefore I strongly recommend that you begin to offer KSML as a meal option for all your customers.

Thank you,

xxxxxxx
I just received this email by mistake. I assume it was meant for you.
Quote
To whom it obviously deeply concerns,

My name is xxxx xxxxx. You and your wife have booked a flight to Iceland departing Jan 9 2018 (xxxxxx) with our airline.

You are super entitled. As part of your travel itinerary, you always look out for things to complain about. In this case we didnít offer the option to pre-order a Kosher meal. Although even if we would have, we would still receive your email complaining about the quality.

Unfortunately, when you attempted to order a KSML (Kosher meal), we realized we just donít care enough to cater to you. While it might be a big deal on a full day flight, traveling 5.5 hours is a different story and a simple sandwich you pick up prior for under $10 will be infinitely better than any of our offerings.

I was surprised that you even took the time out of your day to complain about a meal that you would just push around with your fork before returning it still complete back to the attendant.

We are aware of the fact that other airlines that do fly to Iceland offer Kosher meals. Examples of those airlines include United Airlines, Lufthansa, Britishairways, and Delta. But we arenít them. We donít drag you off the plane (although we may want to), provoke Godwin's law, charge you ludicrous fees, or devalue your award points twice daily. Noone is perfect (You would know that) and we all have our faults.

If you had known that we donít offer KSML, you surely wouldíve booked still booked the exact flight that you did. Because face it, you didnít book us for luxury or fine dining. You booked us because we were the cheapest and or most convenient option for you.

It is not late too cancel your reservation, you can still dispute it with your credit card provider as we didnít supply you with a full service as per your demands which we never were aware we needed to cater to.

The Rabbi in Iceland who you contacted was equally not surprised since there isnít even enough demand in a country with 2 million tourists and residents to sustain services of any kind year-round. As a result, he can tell the 3 people who contact him to book their flight with a different airline.

Therefore I strongly recommend that you pick more important crusades to rally againt.

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread
Facts on the ground
Is the real answer
Says you. And maybe someone with the SN "moko".
Untrue. This is what you will hear from just about anyone involved in kashrus. I have yet to hear from one (other than maybe Yudel Shain depending on the day and how it fits the agenda of the week) of those who I consider to be reliable in kashrus that the OU is not from the most reliable in supervision. This includes some of the most reputable heimishe hechsherim. They will say that they will research to ensure that some of the psakim they don't want to rely upon mostly as chumros and then use their products. They will try to find out about the supervision too but that is not the main thing.

The OU is extremely transparent and I have extensive experience with that transparency. Their reputation is not simply a PR machine but rather has been earned by those who know having seen that the reputation is deserved.

The man at the top is definitely Rabbi Genack. I understand that you are concerned about this, but he is not alone in running the OU. There is a whole hierarchysauch as Rabbi Luban and Rabbi Elefant and others. Almost all, albeit not all, of the RCs are congregational rabbis or worthy of that in their own right. You better bet may be to get to know some RCs to ask questions and get a feel for various products. You seem to be speaking more from ignorance and having a bad feeling than due to anything coherent.

Re: Kosher, Kashrus and Hechsherim Master thread
I know very well what it is known for. I'm questioning this whole perception. What is it based on? Who is behind it? Who is watching the watchers?

So far, in this whole thread, the best answers I get are A) rabbi Genack or B) perception is enough.
It seems that everyone here is basically of one mind in responding to you.

If you truly wanted to be machmir and discriminate heavily on what hechsherim you use, no one would have an issue. Your issue seems to be more boycotting Modern Orthodoxy (if you knew how much they relied on Chabad mashgichim, you'd boycott even faster).

But even if your issue is questioning the reliability, what keeps on being repeated is that the OU is extremely reliable in that they are experts in modern day food production and halacha, and they are extremely consistent and systematic.

Even the many who do not rely on the kulos and heterim OU does, rely on their process and transparency to know what they can and cannot eat.

Their advisory board is public. Their rabbanim are public. As are their psakim and methodology - arguably more so than any other hechsher.

The very "Heimishe" hechsherim you are so willing to trust, themselves trust the OU implicitly.

Those are the facts on the ground.

Your real issues of money and/or politics sadly affects virtually every single hechsher. You have HUGE blind spots when it comes to modern orthodox (and Chabad), which is what drives you to boycott.

Generally, what people who are looking to be machmir do is find someone they trust who is involved in the field, and they will tell you what type of products of the OU (and the OK, and every other K) you can rely on without worry and which products may be problematic.

My father has worked in hashgacha for more than three decades. Some of what he himself certifies as kosher, he does not eat. (on the issue of chalav stam, for instance, he lands to the right of @Freddie but it is approved by the hechsher.) Even though my father is not technically on the Beis Din that gives the hechsher, you can bet that when Rabbi Rubin, Levy or Genack have a question about a product, they'll quicker be calling his number than the dayan who's name is on the hechsher. He was the one in the factory, not the dayan.

If you or any other non kashrus expert calls him, he'll gladly let you know exactly what shitah, kulah or psak they relied on to certify any specific product. Same thing with the OU, OK and others. Though they may approve certain items, they'll let you know that it wouldn't meet your standards if you picked up the phone and called.

There are many bnei Torah who actually know what producing cranberries entails, and are only too happy to share their knowledge. You'd do well to ask them, rather than "blindly follow" someone who's name happens to be on a package and isn't modern orthodox. But again, that's only if your motive is being more discriminating in your keeping of kashrus and not the Mitzvah of החרמת מאדערן ארטאדאקס.

Re: Do you Daven?
I don't want to go super cynical here, but religion ultimately plays a socio-cultural role in the primordial mans world. We pay for our Jewish lifestyle with time, money, limits etc. because it is the price to pay for belonging to the community and fulfilling that need. Everything then becomes a question of what is the cost, and whats considered belonging.

Although what Im saying above is obviously heretical, as human beings, this is how we function. While a religious person should strive for betterment, and hopefully as they gain responsibility, males will recognize their desire to prey/learn/do mitzvos independently of the Marxian idiom above, I totally do not understand what you are asking in terms of "sacrificing so much." We dont consider it sacrifice...if there were no structures to delineate the community, we wouldnt have a community to be a part of.

I totally understand the social pressures that underpin a society. I'm just surprised that davening 3x a day isn't right there among them.

Take off your black hat and you're no longer Jewish, but skip davening (and tefillin) and you're a still a Sheineh Yid?

Re: Do you Daven?
It's not only with spiritual matters.

When asking advice about anything relating to men, I pretty much always get the same answers that give me the idea that men are too fragile. You can't nag, or even ask them to change.

All you can do is reinforce positive behavior (but not so much so that it feels contrived or adds too much pressure) and / or change your expectations.
well clearly I have a very different view point then most men here so maybe I should step out of this conversation.  but I will say there's a big difference between being a nag and having healthy open communication between a husband and wife

Don't be silly. The yeshiva closed because the government imposed secular studies. This is a fact. (Not even disputed by anyone really)

There may have been other issues going on at the time, but nothing that would close the yeshiva.

https://www.amazon.com/Lithuanian-Yeshivas-Nineteenth-Century-Civilization/dp/187477479X

Start by reading this book and then a few others. Sure, it was an issue. But it wasnít THE issue that closed the Yeshiva down. It was the in-fighting amongst different factions in the Yeshiva which led to mesira and ultimately the Yeshiva having to close down.

And anyone to the right or to the left are dead wrong and crazy...

Isn't it beautiful that one can pick which Rov to ask in order to get the answer one wants to get.

My son, I guess taking after his father, chose to spend Shavuos in Tzfas where he could spend 2 days Yom Tov without being the only one doing so. (Though several years ago I must have been the only person keeping 2nd day where I was stuck for Shavuos).
From the way the conversation continues it sounds like you are actually advocating picking who to ask based on their answer.

So if it were only 2 days in a row rather than 3, you'd prefer to have a psak of 2 days?

If 3 days is too much, what will happen when we merit the גאולה האמיתית והשלימה? Or are we not concerned with that because we will be redeemed from our גלות פנימי בעבודת השם?

Prefer a psak? If I wanted to shop around I can also use an eruv, shave my beard, and eat cholov stam.

What does that have to with my personal preferences and what I enjoy?

Like the men blaming on tznius and the women blaming on talking in shul.
Note that this is the one thing for which the chumash says that
לֹֽא־יֹאבֶ֣ה ... סְלֹ֣חַ לוֹ֒
Maybe if I would be more careful in hilchos shabbos they wouldn't be driving to shul. Maybe if I would be more careful in shmiras einayim they wouldn't be in illicit relations.

Re: Joining Kosherica cruise minyan I'd have very mixed feelings.

There are literally thousands of hours of logistical work that went into organizing our small kosher cruise. It would seem to be unfair if someone came along and took advantage of a minyan without helping to defray the cost of making that minyan on a boat. A minyan is a small part of the cost of a kosher program, but it's part of the package and getting a torah onboard and obtaining space onboard is no small feat.

OTOH how do you say no to a fellow Jew wanting to daven with a minyan?

At any rate, this happens at Pesach programs all the time where people either sneak in for minyanim, lectures, and entertainment or they ask if they can attend without being part of the program. I think it reflects poorly on someone who would put himself in that situation.
