Venice Master Thread I'm heading out to Venice with a few friends in mid-July. I'd like to know if anyone has any advice on where to stay - spcifically over Shabbos. The hotels that we've looked at near the Jewish Ghetto are over $200 a night, and those are the cheap ones!

On another note if anyone has any general advice on sightseeing in Paris, Venice, Rome and London (that's our itinerary), please post so we can make our trip memorable.

Re: Here they go again over at FT.
Nothing to do with either.
It had to do with one incredibly foolish/arrogant individual who took pictures of $$$$$$ in coins and blabbed to the media, which is what ultimately killed it.  The ego's need for recognition (on top of rewards) knows no bounds.

Had it not been in the WSJ (twice?) then it would probably still be around as it was for years before that.
...and who gave the picklehead the forum for his ego trip?

Re: Maldives Master Thread I'd wear a hat but a Yarmulke would probably be fine.

It was built as a tourist attraction as much as a mosque and they are used to all types.

The guided tours are fascinating. Was tipped off by another DDF'er and it was he highlight of my trip.

Re: BOA MC cc- 300cb after spending 500. No Annual fee
I guess it's an ok card if you have completely maxed out with Amex and Chase. Otherwise, there are much better fish in the sea...
If the past is any indication BOA can be used and abused at will. This also has 0% on purchases for 15 months. Nice way to get interest free working capital.

He started off with 5k UR and now he has 5k UR and 5k PC, so he got 5k PC for free ::)
Yup. And the best part is that from now on I can get $35 rooms in the future without tying up (wasting/parking) 5K in the account because I had valet parking courtesy of Chase.

Excellent description of our tax system Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7..
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do..

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner offered "Since you are all such good customers, I'm will reduce the charge of your daily beer by $20". Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that $20 divided by 6 is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,"but he got $10!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is friendlier.

Re: Re: Re: Hurray, SPG Dead Sea is back!!! Hey! Long time DD (the blog) reader, first time DDF poster!

I'm gonna be staying in the Le Meridien this Shabbat, so I spoke to the Mashgiach to clarify the Kashrut. Hope this info helps anyone that was searching around like I was.

They are certified Kosher from the local Rabbanut. (I think Ein Bokek)
The meat is NOT Glatt.
The chicken is Rabbanut Mehadrin.
The cooking is Bishul Yisrael according to the Rema, not the Beit Yosef.
The vegetables are Gush Katif. The cabbage is NOT.

I didn't understand what the Mashgiach said about the cheeses but I will ask him tomorrow. Most likely, some of the hard cheeses will not be Mehadrin.

The prices for the meals are as following: 60nis for breakfast, 75nis for Shabbat lunch, and 100nis for Friday night. Pretty cheap, actually.

Re: Did You Get The Flu Vaccine This Winter?
Some hospitals require employees to get shots and even provide it for them. A hospital is there to TRY and make money, so I do not see the point in spending money on vaccines if they do not truly find them effective. I think the cost provides them with the benefit that they know it will keep their patients from acquiring it from the staff (which they will have to pay out of pocket because it is hospital acquired).
Reminds me of this xkcd:

Re: What's your favorite (kind of) beer? I don't know how I never noticed this thread until now.  My absolute hands down favorite domestic brew is Yeungling (Lager... years ago they made an Ale that I liked just as much).  And the Yeungling brewery in Pottsville, PA is a very fun tour - totally different from the others I went to.  They have a network of underground caves where they used to store the beer before refrigeration existed.

I'm also a fan of most Sam Adams flavors (especially Octoberfest, but ESPECIALLY Cherry Wheat), anything Magic Hat (another interesting brewery), and anything cheap and light enough to drink quickly out of red solo cups with a large group of friends....

As far as foreign beer, I've been into Heinekin in recent months.  In college I was very fond of Killians Irish Red.

Brooklyn Restaurants Since I've seen a few requests for this thread the last few days, I thought I would try to compile and wiki it.
I'm not Posting the different hashgachos and only really considering restaurants/eateries in Flatbush/Boro park.

Re: Colored Tissues Master Thread
No, this thread is not comical. There are scenarios where Halachic problems could be avoided with using colored tissues. (Yoreh Daiya Hilchos Niddah Simon 190)

My rav holds that since tissues are a kli ha'asui lizrok, they're not mekabel tumah anyway, so no need for colored. :)

And yes, he's a well-known, respected individual, who quite a few of the Israeli DDF crowd follow.

My letter to Spirit Dear Spirit Airlines:
I have some ideas how you could make more money and I’m baffled as to why you didn’t already incorporate these ideas into your prices. I can’t believe you didn’t think of them yourself, but just in case you didn’t, I’m sending them to you so you can start charging for them right away.

o Only allow a set body weight to be included in the ticket. Charge anyone who weighs more than, say, 150 lb. a $2 surcharge for every pound above the limit.
o Limit passengers to wearing only a shirt, a pair of pants, and shoes. Sweaters should cost $10, coats $20, etc.
o Lap-children should be charged based on their age and the amount of noise they make during the flight.
o Put a credit card machine on the bathroom door on all your airplanes and charge a fee for access.
o Flights with weather-related delays should retroactively bill more for the ticket because the crew has to be paid overtime.
o Also add a “mandatory gratuity” if the plane takes off on time. After all, everyone expected it to be delayed.
o Create self-serve flights, so that you can add a surcharge for full-service flights with pilots and stewardesses.
o Add a customer service surcharge and legal fees to all tickets, because everyone is bound to complain about something.
o Start charging for carry-ons. Oh, I forgot. You already do.
o Charge for beverages. Oh right, you do that too.
o Charge an access fee for using the jet-bridge. Staircase access will stay free.
o Add an expensive landing surcharge because everyone will be willing to pay just about anything to get down once they’re in the air.
o Because cell phones require extra crew scrutiny to assure they’re off, all phones should have to be checked, in separate bags of course (make up a FAA regulation or something like that).
o Charge an access fee for using the aisle. After all, if there wasn’t an aisle you would be able to fit a lot more seats.
o Place a “donate to Spirit” charity box on top of every seat. You never know how stupid people will be.
o Add a “Pearl Harbor Security Fee”. After all, nobody complains about the September 11th Fee.

Thanks for taking the time to read my letter. I look forward to seeing some of these ideas implemented in the near future, so I can be more confident in my decision to never ever fly Spirit.

A Frequent Flyer

I assume in branch pre-approvals won't have this language on them. Kind of like how some AmEx targeted offers don't have their limiting language. Should make it easier to know with Chase!
