Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread

if trump gives us vouchers i dont care if he goes around the whole day grabbing *****

I'm pretty sure you're just making an irreverent joke (something I am guilty of on this forum as well) but if you are serious, then I want to tell you in all seriousness that what you wrote is an inherent contradiction. You want vouchers in order to send your child to private school, which I am assuming means yeshiva, which I am assuming is in order to learn Torah, which is because I am assuming you want him to be a good Jew. But all of that becomes irrelevant if in order to get it we have to desensitize ourselves. As I said, it's an inherent contradiction. I'll get off my soap box now.

Re: Went through the process of house hunting/buying

Right now there isn't much better. Spoken to many mortgage brokers, and as of now there isn't much of a difference. For 1/8 lower it ain't worth it.
cmiiw but one can't apply for 2 mortgages on the same property at the same time.
You can run applications with multiple places will only cost you the appraisal fee. Read up thread where I and others highly recommend doing it

Re: Dispute Credit pull?
Anyone disagree with anything?

1. Banks need permissible purpose to pull (soft). Practically, major FI do this all the time for determining pre-approved population, for identifying spend engagement or credit line increase opportunities and a myriad of other projects.
2. As a consumer, you can freeze, which means that even with a permissible purpose, they can't pull your report for any of these reasons. As a result, you're unlikely to receive much marketing from them, and you definitely won't receive pre-approved offers. If you opt out of marketing (different from freezing your report) you literally will not get anything.
3. Banks could - but don't - do a hard pull on existing customers. Why they don't do this, even though they could, probably can be chalked up to erring on the side of caution especially with mounting pressures from consumer advocacy groups and government bodies in the entire credit arena. Fines have been flying. I can also confirm that FIs were pressured into supplying FICO scores.
4. Since banks don't do hard pulls unless you ASK them to (let alone all the time) it is certainly worth paying attention to your hard pulls - activites such as MBMs, refined these days to mean applying on same day with same bank, are still good ideas to reduce pulls. If you can eliminate a HP with a phone call, it's worth it.
5. Can y'all hug it out now?

Excellent summary and an excellent example of how a true long time contributor should behave. Thank you

Re: Silent Killer Guys, I've argued with aygart (left it lowercase for you) plenty. Frankly, you guys are being ridiculously unfair and assigning positions and opinions to him which he has never laid claim to. Stop "reading into" his comments, and just read them.

He has posted his desire for experts in the field to be the ones coordinating and directing campaigns, and never once intimated that Rabbinic authority be consulted over medical and psychological experts.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
Exactly. Times change. Some old feeling won't be felt anymore as they did in the day it took a boat ride to cross the Atlantic. Those days aren't coming back.
We also have electricity by our Seders. Judaism and our kids will survive this too.

I do think as time goes on, especially at how fast the world is changing that without some effort from parents kids can end up missing out in being happy, understanding, appreciative individuals.

Re: Smoking Meats So i smoked a brisket for the first time today. I used a masterbuilt 30" smoker. It was a 5lb second cut.   Did the rub last night (black pepper, kosher salt, garlic powder and a little brown sugar)  put it on the smoker at 8am. I used a mix of wood. Sprayed with apple juice the last 2.5 hours and  hours And crutched it about 1.5 hours before i Took it off. Took it off at 5:15 when it hit 195. I needed to crank the temperature up towards the end since i needed to serve it today. I let it rest for 1 hour in towels and a cooler.  For the most part it Came out soft as butter and tasted delicious. Was definitely something my guests will want the next time they come.  Thanks for everyone that contributes to this thread for giving me the push to try smoking meat. (I have been following this thread for ages)

Re: Will Amazon vs Walmart war ever end?... Walmart already won. Neither one is going to put the other out of business. Walmart's purpose is to make themselves a full fledged competition with Amazon. Mission accomplished. The question is how long they will continue it for added publicity.

PSA: Take a lot of extra time when going to pick up your in-store pickup items! Take in mind the following facts:
You are not the only one who made orders for store pickup
Walmart employees work slow
There is a low amount of pickup cashiers (about 2)
Everyone will likely come for several orders at once (each order is like a new person with a new order number)
They will have an extremely high stock of items to look from making it MUCH harder to find each item
You have only 8 days to pick up your order or it will automatically be cancelled

PSA: Bank of America Estate Unit I am working to get some bank accounts of my Aunt's who passed away with no children taken care of. SHe had accounts in numerous banks. Most were fairly simple to present the documents and within about a half hour we could walk out with a check. Bank of America is giving us such a run around. We are already over 2 months from when we started the process and have gotten nowhere. They ask for things and then don't acknowledge whether they got what they need or not until calling the estate unit and waiting on hold for a long time. They have set up a system to give a run around and hold on to estate funds for as long as possible.

To make things easier for yorshim stay away.

Re: FBI Raids Orthodox Homes
cant believe that people are stealing from the government, and even worse from the rest of lakewood
everyone pays more taxes because everyone is on programs.

maybe now the taxes will go down?
Taxes don't go down.
As a side note, I know someone who was unemployed, collecting medicaid, unemployment, and food stamps. He then got a job in another state and reported to all 3 agencies that he he got a job out of state and was no longer eligible for services. the only agency that canceled him was unemployment. Recently he told that he still gets gets letters from medicaid office and his current food stamps balance is over $10000.
Obviously he doesn't touch it but for legal purposes he   maintains every document that he ever sent them. So the govt should be arrested for being completely incompetent and tying up taxpayer dollars endlessly in the "system". it almost makes one say that t least with fraud someone benefited. In this case the money is just going to disappear. I can just imagine the accounting nightmare when some wakes up one and discovers thousands of such cases with millions tied up but never spent.

Re: Silent Killer
Here you go again...what issues? Can you please once and for all provide a list of such issues and known victims of such issues? We're all big boys and girls here. Can you please be clear and provide source material and case studies to back you up.

I can't help but jump in. This argument is pointless. You both will go round and round in circles. I will say that @aygart has been nothing but fair. Although you are asking him for source material, and he has provided link to articles showing that his concerns exist and are real, you yourself have never provided any proof or backing to your viewpoints. What you have done is consistently put words in his mouth and made unfounded and serious accusations against him.

Your clearly have an emotional connection to this issue, and that is commendable. G-d bless you and all those who do their utmost to help their fellow man. But there's no need to endlessly beat up on aygart just because his entirely reasonable opinion differs slightly to yours.

Re: 5 Towns/Rockaway Master Thread
Me and the fam are looking to visit the cedarhurst/woodmere neighborhood for shmini atzeres/simchas torah/shabbos and are looking for good shuls to visit for our wavelength (low-mid 30s with a few kids, prob right-wing modox in action and more central modox in thought/openmindedness).
would love a very carlebachy place and/or a more homey shtiebl-like option (i would probably also join a young israel for basics), but dont see any real options online. I think i would love something like the breslov-inspired white shul side minyan but in the cedarhurst/woodmere location. other than Aish kodesh, where should i go?

I dont like uber-yeshivish davening, or any tunes to kedusha made after 1995. I dont really like shabbos davening speeches that dont teach a real moral takeaway (i love mental tickles, but i think shul rabbis should use that short time for chizuk since most baalei baatim need real mussar/chizuk as its prob close to all they are getting). i love smiles and no shushes (i also love no talking, but if there is, it seems shushes sometimes makes things worse), and i'm fine with kids making noise until someone gives them a candy.

wow, i ended up bearing my soul for my likes and dislikes here :). any suggestions of secret minyanim i am missing much appreciated.

Very nice summation of what I think a lot of people are looking for but don't have the guts to admit it.

Re: Will your federal taxes be going up or down next year?
I think 50-100k household income for a family, I'd call middle.

Of course, if you're frum, it's impossible to live on those numbers.
That's the lower middle class.

Re: Will your federal taxes be going up or down next year?
Let's run the numbers.

I'll give them 3 kids,  and no itemizing.

They pay 2700, and are saving 3200

Seems like a pretty awesome tax cut
But paying 2.7k in taxes so you consider them rich. So you are saying awesome tax cut for the rich.  :)

Also why are you using 3 kids when the average is not even 2?

Re: The Pros And Cons Of Where You Live
Excuse my ignorance (I'm originally from England), but what is "Chofetz Chaim"? A kehilla? Yeshiva? Is it affiliated with Rabbi Zaks in Monsey?

Chofetz chaim is both a sefer, and a person. The person wrote the sefer.  He lived in Radin, and had a yeshiva, and wrote the sefer. He is Rabbi Zaks' grandfather or greatgrandfather or something.  Why is Rabbi Zaks' name not Kagan? I dunno, why is your name not Avinu if you're descended from avraham.

There's also some orgs that incorporate his name. Like the chofetz chaim heritage foundation, as if the chofetz chaim's heritage is  everyone watching a movie on tisha b'av afternoon, with a frum version and a frei version.

Obviously, the chofetz chaim's real heritage is the yeshiva named after him, that was opened by his nephew, whose name is also not Kagan (I ASK YOU AGAIN, IS YOUR NAME AVINU? NO? SO I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT).

Re: Do you Daven?
Rí Shais Taub has covered this on more than 1 occasion. He was very clear that the woman should not be his mashgiach. (Unfortunately I didnít save that issue)

What does 'being his mashgiach's entail?

If a husband has an issue with his wife's sheitel, looks, weight, job, etc. He can ask/expect her to change, but a wife can't?

I think that some here are confusing being a nag over it that he would feel you are always watching and keeping tabs on his davening which would be unhealthy for your marriage and counterproductive with having a serious conversation about something which you consider to be a serious issue. I do not see an issue with having the conversation with him, but there would of course be issues if you ask him every da whether or not he davened.

A. shias taub who?
b. there is a far cry between being your spouse's mashgiach which would be counterproductive and saying that your spouse's yiddeshkeit isn't your problem unless it effects your kids
c. the fact that line can be said with out any sort of protest and a lot of what else is being said in this thread is so so sad. we have created a different sect. a cultural Judaism not much different then reform Judaism just with emphasis on different things that are or aren't important.

Re: Do you Daven?
It's not only with spiritual matters.

When asking advice about anything relating to men, I pretty much always get the same answers that give me the idea that men are too fragile. You can't nag, or even ask them to change.

All you can do is reinforce positive behavior (but not so much so that it feels contrived or adds too much pressure) and / or change your expectations.
well clearly I have a very different view point then most men here so maybe I should step out of this conversation.  but I will say there's a big difference between being a nag and having healthy open communication between a husband and wife

January 10, 2018, 08:36:05 PM
Re: Do you Daven? The big issue for me with all this is that the the primary source of yiras shomayim is only absorbed by children directly from their parents. It is not something that is taught academically for the most part.

So if the parents are very lacking, the kids are totally lost. They will probably end up orthoprax at best. Notwithstanding the millions invested in yeshiva tuition.
