Re: What's The Best Coffee you've ever had- The Brand, Style of Preparation & Where? cold brew method, I take a 1-1.5 bag of coffee (whole beans only) and then grind it coarsely (similar to what one would use for a French press) and split it into 2 nut milk bags with room and close them up and put both of those in a bigger nut milk bag and close that one too. then I put it in a big Rubbermaid container and pour in about 3 liters of water and leave it on the counter for 12 hours and in the fridge for about 6. I remove the bag and squeeze out the excess liquid and pour the liquid into multiple mason jars and place them in the fridge. I use medium roasted beans. ive tried peets but the best coffee I've found for cold brew is the kicking horse three sisters blend. the jars last about a month for freshness.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
One of us is experiencing cognitive dissonance. Here's why I think it's you.

He said "they let you do it." The imagery I get from that is that, as a famous person, he can be more forward and take more risks than other people because he's pretty sure he won't be rejected. I don't see any indication that, if he does get rejected by a woman, he would continue touching her against her will.

Even the women who've come forward say he touched them "without permission." Most socially normal people don't ask permission first. They look for signals. He interprets signals more often than regular people because he gets them more often than regular people.

I'm warning you to stop. Just stop. You don't have to defend sexual assault to explain why you support Trump. You can support Trump for any reason you want. Even just for the hell of it. I'm fine with that. But for the love of G-d, please do not force yourself to rationalize sexual assault. Walk away from this one.

"They let you do it" should send chills down the spine of anyone with a mother or a daughter or a sister or a wife. "They let you do it" is a sentiment completely lacking the slightest comprehension of the emotions of another human being. It doesn't matter if it's wealth, power, or fame, or a knife to your throat, "They let you do it" is not a defense against being labeled a total user but the very definition of it. Can you not see that? "They let you do it" is the defense of every child molester who grooms his victims rather than bashing them in the face and raping them. "They let you do it" is the defense of every frat boy who had sex with a drunk girl. "They let you do it" is the defense of every producer in Hollywood who uses aspiring actors for sex.

Sorry to be so blunt.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread Here's a poem I wrote. It's called "They Let You Do It."

They Let You Do It

A powerful man once told some guy he was trying to impress that
When you're a star
They just let you do it

It's true. They do. They just let you.

You know what else?

When you pay they bills
   They let you do it
And when you're related
   They let you do it
When you guilt them for leading you on
   They let you do it
And when they have "daddy issues"
   They let you do it
When you are a teacher, a therapist, or clergy
   They let you do it
And when you are a trusted friend of the family
   They let you do it
When they "owe you one"
   They let you do it
And when they're lonely and have low self-esteem and you have social standing
   They let you do it

I tell you, brother, there's no need to lurk in dark alleys anymore
No weapons, no fists
No need to even raise your voice

Because they just let you do it

Re: Rabbis Walk From Brooklyn To The Bronx On Shabbos (Interesting Articles Split)
Most reasonable people shouldn't take DDF posts, even from a distinguished member such as yourself, as a Halachic ruling.

I see it like Lubavitchers getting smicha before getting married, it's not in order to be a Rabbi, it's in order to have a proper awareness and to know how to ask a שאלה.
The facts are that people do and therefore the disclaimer is the responsible thing to do.

Re: MS / Churning in Israel No funny business at all.  It was an MS dream, ironically in Israel of all places.  It still works for Israeli cards, but the only somewhat worthwhile card to do it with is the Israeli Fly Card Premium (190 shekels per El Al point).  If you put in the effort to charge 40k ILS a month to the card, you get El Al Platinum in addition to the boatload of points.  Since it still works for that, I'd rather not spill the beans... yet.

There is still another method that is anchored in Israeli laws and works for foreign cards, but it's A LOT more legwork and interaction with people.  No limit either, but I'm sure overdoing it would get you noticed.

Re: Shlichus Addiction?
So our yeshivas don't properly prepare kids for jobs or shlichus. Cool.
Exactly.

Wasn't it you who quoted upthread that חב״ד מאנט פנימיות? Yeshiva is not about preparation for a career. I cringe when I hear the expression "going through the system".

Up until a stage when a child begins learning גמרא, it could be argued that there's a dual purpose, learning and preparing for the next level. Once a child has reached the mental capacity of לימוד הגמרא, it's all about learning, not about preparing for a next level.

Obviously, once a person learns at a certain level, one can go deeper and deeper and develop further, but the learning in and of itself is the purpose.

And while there's a lot to improve in our Yeshivos, and introducing some skills (not as a direct learning subject, but as a skill that can be acquired while focusing on something else - case in point: חזרת דא״ח, having bochurim actually say over a מאמר as if they are teaching it to the crowd, rather than reciting something that no-one can follow. My most memorable experience was when I was forced to do it in English, it was the most meaningful one I've done.)

Re: Shlichus Addiction?
Another question to be asked, from all those espousing secular education as a preparation for life/parnossa, is whether the "Al Taharas Hakodesh" Lubavitch curriculum is optimized towards preparing for Shlichus?

I would not be surprised, if educational experts were to be invited to chime in, and be given the ultimate purpose of Shlichus (of which only a percentage of actual work is directly related to what's studied in Yeshiva), they would design an entirely different curriculum. Public speaking, language skills, communication skills, counseling skills, etc. would take center stage of such a curriculum. Yet, our yeshivas do not focus on any of those.
So our yeshivas don't properly prepare kids for jobs or shlichus. Cool.

I disagree with this. Preparation for shlichus is limud haTorah. It's not just my opinion, it's something I've heard from many shluchim including Berel Lazar, who you might think would have benefited from some sort of communications or politics class.

To be sure, the Rebbe demanded shluchim use their talents and skills, and they should certainly hone those skills and improve them. But their job is to be mekabel pnei Moshiach tzidkeinu by being meifitz chassidus and getting yidden to do mitzvos. Their job is not to deliver speeches, give invocations, or write editorials. Sure, those are important tools, but they are only tools with which to impart all the knowledge they picked up in their years in yeshivah.

As in my above example, a shliach's success is not due to his public speaking, writing or counseling acumen. When I was 14 years old on mivtzoim and a man sought my counsel on his failing business, troubled familial relationships and more, he obviously wasn't seeking my advice, but he was benefiting from my compassion. Not that I'm an especially kind personality, just that I happened to be the Rebbe's shliach to that person in that moment. And I did help him out, otherwise why would he keep seeking my counsel every week? My age, skills and knowledge had nothing to do with it, any comfort I brought to that Jew was with the power vested in me by the Rebbe.

In many ways, shluchim are like audacious 14 year old know nothing kids. They are the Rebbe's men on the spot. Sure one might be able to deliver a pilpul, another a punchline, and yet another might be able to explain bilti baal gvul without illustrations. But the power they have to effect the world in the grand way they do comes from the Rebbe, and no amount of vocational training will change that.

By the way, there are some yeshivas that do offer such classes. In fact, a relative of mine told me of a public speaking class in which they had to deliver a speech based on the techniques and skills learned in the class. He gave a speech which had all the bochurim laughing and engaged, but "failed" (I don't believe the class counted for anything) and upset the instructor who complained he didn't use the specific formula he had taught.

Sure, each school could use improvement in any number of areas, just as that public speaking teacher probably wasn't the best guy for the job. But to say that a yeshivah that only teaches bochurim nigleh and chassidus without vocational instruction is not preparing them for shlichus is like saying a medical school that only teaches medicine without communication studies isn't preparing students to become doctors.

I know firsthand of a program that hired a "bochur" who is (לעת עתה) openly not frum.
Years ago, I worked for a caterer (not Pesach) who hired a Mashgiach who wasn't frum (he did wear a yarmulka which on the job). I can't tell you how many times the Hispanic manager corrected him on matters of Kashrus.

Most notably:
Manager to waiter - "Please start putting the bottles of wine on the tables."
Mashgiach to manager: "Oh no, don't tell her that. I need to do that."
Manager to Mashgiach - "That's okay, these bottles are mevushal!"

Do they need to verify? The difference IINM is not whether tax was actually paid rather whether you can claim a deduction for the contribution.

I think it's safe to say that this post has jumped the shark and descended into some weird witch-hunt.

It's doing nothing to change anyone's mind and the discussion is only causing the opposite of ahavas yisroel and helping out your fellow Jew to improve this world.

Thanks again to Side Incomer for enlightening us with alternate views from the other Chasidic courts and for proving that Chabad's belief system is within the realm of standard chasidic thought.

I apologize to anyone I offended, obviously this is a topic that causes very hot heads.  I hope you'll forgive me and I hope you'll be more open-inded and more willing to be dan l'kav zchus as well.

My only plea is that you stop worrying so much about what OTHERS are doing wrong and start worrying about what YOU can do right.

L'chaim.

I'm locking this, if someone doesn't want it locked PM me, but I'm pretty sure most would like it locked again from the feedback I am getting. Nothing new is being discussed.

Re: US Politics/2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
Why are people so upset that he condemned terrorists on both sides together ? A terrorist is a terrorist. Is attacking somebody with a bat or brick less of a crime than attacking with a car ?

BTW shame on the charlottsville police chief or McAwful or whoever gave the order to stand down.

He has been championed on this thread for calling out Islamic terrorism by name. He himself said not referring to Islamic terrorism by name disqualified Hilary. He calls EVERYONE out by name. From Rosie to Mitch, Hilary to Obama. He is never vague or even remotely nuanced.

Except when it comes to white nationalist, white supremacists, Nazis - whatever you want to call them.

He was vague about condemning them during the campaign, and he was vague now too.

Want to call out Antifa as well? Good! They should be condemned for the fascist thugs they are. But when someone dresses like a Nazi, chants like a Nazi, and kills like a Nazi, call it a Nazi! If you can't, especially when you called everyone else you took issue with, you can't feign surprise that people are upset and infer racist or ugly political motives.

Re: Public letter

Going to a yeshiva and engaging in intense, authentic Torah learning, as well as having the opportunity to be meshamesh talmidei chachamim (a term that is not easily translated to  English) is an opportunity for one to mold his thoughts and hashkafos according to the Torah so that his commitment to a Torah lifestyle becomes firmly eastablished, and creates a foundation that one can build upon for the rest of his life. A BT who does not experience this is at  a great disadvantage.

On the other hand, one can twist the Torah to suit his preconceived notions, judgements, and values, and in that case the Torah he learns simply becomes a tool to further his own ideologies, using his knowledge of the Torah to justify his positions in any way that suits him. In that case his Torah learning wil be detrimental as in the quote of the words of chazal above.

In short, going to yeshiva gives a BT a tremendous opportunity that he would not have had, but is by no means a guarantee, as evidenced by our friend mike....
I would suggest that the main factor in going to yeshiva is blending into society. There are many things that are society norms that they never learn. Being in yeshiva provides them that opportunity.

Re: PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others One point that needs to be spoken about more is how MS and "the game" affect how people look at credit card spending. It doesn't feel like real money.

None of these people would go to a bank, take out a loan and hand over cash to a stranger, but when you do tens or and even hundreds of thousands of dollars of MS it starts to feel like fake money, because it's all numbers on the screen.

In agreement with this one here.
Hence bringing it to the post office, that in itself is a kiddish hashem, is it not? The postal worker sees that you found a passport and you take your time to make sure the rightful owner gets it back.

This reminded me, on a smaller level of this story - https://www.cnn.com/2013/11/11/us/connecticut-rabbi-returns-money/index.html

As far as the people who are talking about monetary value of a passport:
- It obviously has a monetary value to the owner, as several people have pointed out - the $120 or so to replace it
- It probably has some value on the black market
- For the sake of argument, does Machmas Chisaron Kis apply not just to the direct value of the item, but also to the potential greater loss of time and money that may be incurred if the passport is used to steal the holder's identity?

It is possible but highly unlikely. Those growing up in sheltered communities are less aware of what is going on outside their community. I know no one likes to hear that but facts are facts.

I grew up in South Africa, no other Chassidic Jews in my neighborhood.
I studied in Canada, France, Australia, Brooklyn and Buffalo.
My wife grew up in Nebraska, 3 hours away from the nearest Chassidic Jew, and who knows how far from what one could legitimately call a Chassidic community.
My next door neighbor is from Trinidad. My co-workers are from the Philippines, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and numerous states.
I've traveled to 5 continents.
I am hardly the exception. But please, tell me more about how sheltered we are.

Its actually a logical assertion.
How are liberals not wicked in the eyes of the Torah?
I'd love to hear you explain this one.
It is almost impossible to that one political viewpoint is entirely in line with Torah. (As the famous story with the sixth Chabad Rebbe goes).

Almost everything in this world is a mixture of good and bad. So to call one group of individuals entirely wicked based on their political viewpoint is asinine.

Re: May Rush Limbaugh have a speedy recovery
Yup, hey it's enjoyable. Everyone needs an outlet for fun. Some just like to think they are fixing the world while doing it.

In some ways it's a more insidious than sports because it's not a "mindless" outlet, so it's more likely to corrupt a person's hashkafos to the point that they think that Torah values are whatever Rush or Sean or Ben said last week.

Re: Bill D’Blasio Warns "The Jewish Community"
Yeah, that's kind of the whole point of me bringing up Shmuel Kunda in this thread.

Written by a relative:

I am the mayor of New York York York York
Do I run it well
Oh yes, you said it
I tweet out one innocuous and simple comment
And somehow I get called anti-Semitic

But I'm the kindest person in New York York York York
I'll be remembered for my reformed bail
Yes he's the kindest person in New York York York York
Just ask the people who should still be in jail

Oh his honor, yes his honor
Is the title by which I'm known
Oh his honor, yes his honor
Keeps clashing with Cuomo

I am the mayor of New York York York York
I will prosecute every COVID hoarder
And if people dare to step out without a mask mask
They'll be summoned by executive order

Yes we'll shut down this city of New York York York York
Every museum and public landmark
NYPD will give masks to New York York York
In central, prospect, but not Boro Park

We're on lockdown, we're on lockdown
So no one will need the train
Oh this lockdown, the crowds in lockdown
The subways can't contain

I am the mayor of New York York York York
I help the hungry and I help the needy
We'll open food banks for all that need it
There shouldn't be too many more than fifty

Oh, I am the mayor of a powerful city
We don't need Trump's hospital ships
You are the mayor of a bored, bored city
Your hotline just overflowed with tips

Mr. Mayor, Mr. Mayor
You're hated by everyone
Mr. Mayor, Mr. Mayor
You're out in 21!
