Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
Now he goes after a civil rights icon right before MLK day. Talk about a loose cannon.

"all talk, talk, talk - no action or results."
The reaction here reminds me of when I was in elementary school and had a classmate with asthma who very regularly threw chalkboard erasers at kids during recess but as soon as they start throwing them back at him he suddenly started wheezing until they stopped and he had a miraculous recovery.

That Lewis rightfully deserves much credit for what he has done to advance civil right is really irrelevant to the conversation. He cannot expect that to be a "get out of jail free" card for any and every polical statement he makes just because it is around MLK day. Don't say stupid things and you won't get stupid responses.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
What he said was based on his view of the intelligence report. I don't believe Russians influenced the election but I am not so righteous as some here where I can't see how he would come to his conclusion. If we are going to compare what these two guys have done for our country so far Trump as one D put it can't even shine his boots.
I understand that, but that was certainly litigated in the election with the HC campaign constantly repeating how it was the Russians and claiming that DT would be a pawn of Putin. Either way, the question isn't whether or not Lewis had a right to say it but whether or not Trump was wrong for responding in kind. When someone says that the incoming president is illegitimate he is opening himself up to attack. Don't then cower behind the great and important actions of the past.

If that president elect doesn't understand the significance of attacking a civil rights icon right before MLK day then he should keep his mouth shut.
It was unlikely that it was unitentional by Lewis that his "illegitimate" comment was right before MLK day. I see no reason that he should be able to hide behind MLK day to make whatever statement he wishes. If he makes such a statement right before MLK day then he is the one who brought the response upon himself right before MLK day.

Lewis is the idiot who decided that his inability to accept the results of an election overshadows the significance of MLK day. And despite your hate for Trump, no one who you consider better than Trump is ever held responsible for saying extremely stupid things. Which is kinda strange. Because I would think that better people are held to higher standards.

...but his lawyers state the election was legit. There was no fraud.

Trumpís lawyers said, ďAll available evidence suggests that the 2016 general election was not tainted by fraud or mistake.Ē
He assumes the fraud favors the D's, so of course it follows that the election was legit. There's value to an investigation to prevent future elections from being fraudulent.

There is strong evidence for one and little or no evidence for the other. You see no difference? I guess he is launching an investigation into Russia to?  :)

That's 100% false.
There IS evidence of voter fraud and the only question is to what extent. Is it a few thousand or is it much more than that?
Studies have shown that up to 15% (but likely much lower) of non-citizens voted in the 2008 election.

Re: Trump banning 7 major Muslim countries citizens entry into the US
There is no ban on religion!!! There is a (3 month) ban on people from countries that the Obama administration declared most likely to be havens for terror.

There is plenty to complain about with this EO, without making stuff up. Including green card holders (against the recommendation of Homeland security), implementation, and not getting any legal advice on how to do it properly are all valid complaints. Screaming "UNAMERICAN" and "Muslim ban" just discredits valid complaints.
I was basing my comments on what was written here.  I had understood that there was a ban specifically on Muslims.  If incorrect I take it back.  DDF is my primary source of news.
American law already distinguishes been religions when granting refugee status. So I'm not sure that makes Trumps or obamas actions less American.
I also didn't know non-citizens were afforded religious liberties or rights.
It's a privilege to visit our country not a right!
Refugees due to religious persecution obviously require distinguishing based on religion.  Very different than a proactive step based on religion.  And of course non citizens don't have the same rights as citizens,  and its a privilege to come here.  Tell that to the boatloads of Jewish refugees who were sent back to nazi Europe

1. Most of the top Muslim countries are not banned entry. The ban is for specific countries that Obama named as countries of "concern".
2. Those boatloads of Jewish refugees would've been accepted nowadays under Trumps laws. So not sure what you're getting at.

Not to pick on you specifically, but this point is one that while I understand it somewhat, seems to be a bit stretched. Do you or anyone else really believe that just because someone in todays world is cracking down on Muslims that means theres only a short distance to cracking down on Jews??? Sure, halacha hi beyadua she'esav sonei leyaakov, and persecution of us Jews even in America is possible at any time and for any reason, but I think its a still a big leap to say that someone who is trying to restrict the people and religion that espouse hatred of Western civilization and values, not to mention Jews, might try to come after us by that same token. When Jewish people are committing mass murders in the name of their religion (misguided or not) and are clearly the greatest threat to normal, sane people living peaceful lives, than sure, Trump might make Jewish visits and immigration to America much more restrictive too. But I dont see how that follows automatically at all. You can't say that singling out one religion automatically means the increased liklihood of singling out other religions, if the religion being singled out is different than the rest by (at a minimum) containing within it large and identifiable segments that are liable to start shooting and blowing people up that they dont agree with......

To answer your question,  which I now understand may not be pertinent to the actual facts,  Yes,  I really believe that.  That's one of the beautiful things about the USA,  and it can be destroyed.  Rav Moshe speaks about this in several places.
As I wrote, I certainly agree with that and it can happen at any time. I just dont see how this is logically and al pi derech hateva, in any way a precursor to that, since there is no logical or any other kind of leap automatically from Muslims to Jews. Care to explain further?

What happened? Did someone ask if he still beats his wife?

His ex-wife has repeatedly said for years that her allegations were not true, and that she was "counseled" to make them in order to gain an upper hand in their divorce negotiations.

What more likely stopped his nomination was his views on immigration. It's ironic that the one Trump nominee that was stopped, was from the right.

That is why this is so surprising?

No, it's not surprising at all.
I don't find it ironic like the poster I was replying to.
Besides, as I've said a few times, the good thing about electing Trump is that the R's aren't afraid to challenge him. That's called great checks and balances. OTOH Hillary would automatically get every D's support (including MSM) for anything she wanted, no matter how bad the idea. And of course any dirt dug up would be immediately ignored.

Ps. Just wanted to mention because you like balanced news coverage, I don't follow them much, but I find Bloomberg to be by far the closest to the center. CNN is fully left, although not as bad as HuffPo.

Re: Budget to penalize large families!

The more income you make, gradually your benefits get cut. There is no HUGE leap. By the time you get close to the income limits, you are hardly making any money on benefits.

There factually is no huge leap!

There used to be a huge health insurance leap (even though that was also somewhat gradual, first the father {and mother when not pregnant} lost it, then the mother and children lost it) but now with Obamacare, health insurance is also gradual. (Maybe not enough, but we're discussing FS here)

And EIC is capped at 3 children either way.

There is an argument to be made that programs make people not work. But it has nothing to do with family size.

There is nothing gradual about loosing health insurance. You go suddenly from virtually free health, to paying 15k a year in premiums w high deductable. I know many who hesitate to ask for a raise/look for a new job when at the threshold.

Re: Budget to penalize large families!
I just don't want so many yidden to fall in to poverty.

There is something very disingenuous about this statement. It's possible that you mean well, but I'm just having a hard time believing it.

I live in a large Jewish community, and from what I see, it's the working class families that suffer the most. The ones that work on the books and pay their taxes. The ones that pay for their own insurance and their own food. The ones that pay full tuition. The ones that pay full childcare. The ones where both parents work so that they can make ends meet. I hear horror stories of how working class people sometimes don't have money for food after paying all their monthly bills.

A significant portion of the families receiving benefits are laid back and have ZERO motivation to get a real job. They stick with local jobs that pay no more than $35K a year "unter dem tish". They come late to shul and hang around for hours.

My point is, I have just as much or MORE rachmanus on families who work their butts off to eke out a living. The budget proposal is supposed to work in favor of taxpayers. I don't know whether it will be successful or not, but I'm happy to give it a try.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread

... This is just one tiny example that I deal with in NYC, one of the largest concentrations of visible Jews on the planet, in the shining pride of Western civilization. In other places, it is far, far worse. (Look at Jeremy Corbyn in the UK for a start, and we can go from there.)

So that's why we don't care about hate crime stats. We know firsthand that they don't even begin to tell the story. That's why we are so skeptical of leftists and the media speaking of hate crimes - we have a long history of them not only ignoring hate crimes committed against us, but agitating and prodding those who do us actual harm.

I'm re-upping this post in light of the UK drastically increasing their support for and normalizing a terrorist sympathizer and anti Semite. G-d help us all.

ETA: to be clear, the *accusations* against Gorka, Banon, Trump, et al. combined don't even hold a candle to Corbyn's actual statements and actions.

It doesn't sound like Mr Integrity to be prosecutor judge and jury to decide how to deal with Hillary making his own rules. It doesn't sound like Mr Integrity to have everytrhing leaking except what he kept repeating that Trump was not under investigation. And if he agreed that it was a mistake to begin with

Why announce that Trump investigation?
Why confirm to Trump privately that he's not under investigation and and not announce it publicly?

Why would they need to investigate ALL immigrants being paid cash? They can start with the more egregious ones.

Or according to your logic, they should do it the same way must have investigated every Jew with an LLC.

There has been a long standing sentiment that all of the offices administering these programs have given preferential treatment to the illegal immigrants over the Orthodox Jews. I know someone whose wife spent part of her childhood in Mexico and speaks Spanish like a Mexican native. He has told me that since she started going to these offices speaking Spanish instead of English she has been treated much differently.

Yes, the illegals receive these programs for their children born here.

The JR email and meeting is pretty solid. My opinion upthread was like yours, there was no evidence of Russiagate and the media was hounding what was essentially Trump's incompetence (which is awful for the country, but not illegal or scandalous). Now there are actual ties (as mentioned in the article I linked above, this is without any investigation, but simply leaks to the press). It's no longer a nothingburger.

It's true, "the media" is overdoing it about as as much as they under-report leftist scandals, but such is life.
Show me the political campaign that said no thank you to potential dirt on its opponent.

Re: US Politics/2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread To clear things up, I think the current situation is expected.

Everyone knew Trump is going to be a different president and that is precisely the reason people like me wanted him.

Now, a very true parable comes to mind and I think explains the situation very well. Any strong medication will have strong side effects which can sometimes make the man miserable, but for long term serves his best interest. Same thing here. Because Washington was such a big Swamp / Sewer we had to swallow a medicine called Trump.  We are of course seeing this shifting in staff etc it will take time for him to be comfortable in the White House but in the same time we are being represented AMERICA FIRST and we are not leading from behind any more.  We finally have someone representing us in trade where are previous leaders were so foolish. We finally have someone lowering taxes and trying to help small businesses.  We finally have someone really helping and caring about the VA.  Bring on real conservative judges for the SCOTUS.  With all these great changes I am fine with some side effects. And for this reason I am still confident in President Trump.

You have the wrong guy. Prison is to punish and incarcerate. If it deters or rehabilitates someone that is a bonus.
And how does that help?
If it is not a deterrent and not rehabilitative and only punitive then its purpose is to lock away those that are a danger to society and to exact mob mentality revenge in the form of government sanctioned and run punishment facilities. Sound about right?

Re: US Politics/2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
Your opinion is biased against the media and for Trump. You can't acknowledge the facts. The fact is the real media (not Hannity and Maddow) very seldom if ever lie on purpose. Trump on the other hand does it on a regular basis. If you believe the President lying to the public on regular basis is not worse than a no name reporter lying then you have your head buried in the sand.
I'm not a trumpster or whatever you call it and i strongly disagree with this statement. The media lies intentionally all the time. They are biased and present things that support their narrative while ignoring things that don't. They tell half truths and often bring on guests who support their narrative and allow them to tell complete lies unchecked. This happens at all of the media companies. If you think that any of them are trustworthy then you are way to far down the rabbit hole.
I'm not saying that this is worse then Trump lying. I think they are both bad.

Re: Jokes Master Thread A big city lawyer went duck hunting in rural New Jersey. He shot a bird, but it fell into farmer's field on the other side of a fence.

As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing.

The litigator responded, "I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and now I'm going to retrieve it."

The old farmer replied, "This is my property, and you are not coming over here."

The indignant lawyer said, "I am one of the best trial attorneys in New York and, if you don't let me get that duck, I'll sue you and take everything you own."

The old farmer smiled and said, "Apparently, you don't know how we settle disputes in New Jersey.  We settle small disagreements like this with the 'Three Kick Rule.'"

The lawyer asked, "What is the 'Three Kick Rule'?"

The Farmer replied, "Well, because the dispute occurs on my land, I get to go first. I kick you three times and then you kick me three times and so on back and forth until someone gives up."

The attorney quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by the local custom.

The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the attorney. His first kick planted the toe of his heavy steel toed work boot into the lawyer's groin and dropped him to his knees!

His second kick to the midriff sent the lawyer's last meal gushing from his mouth. The lawyer was on all fours when the farmer's third kick to his rear end, sent him face-first into a fresh cow pie.

The lawyer summoned every bit of his will and remaining strength and very slowly managed to get to his feet. Wiping his face with the arm of his jacket, he said, "Okay, you old fart. Now it's my turn."

The old farmer smiled and said, "Nah, I give up. You can have the duck."
