How I ended up staying in JFK on Shabbos (TR) As per request by some members to hear how I ended up staying in JFK airport on Shabbos after staying in an airplane for 16 hrs…I decided to write it out.  I forgot some details of the story…i’m sorry..its been a while.

It all started out at the end of a week vacation in Italy where I was flying from MXP-JFK in Y (IIRC it was American Airlines).  Flight in MXP was leaving around 9am which got delayed on ground for a little.  Besides for being the only Jews on the plane there might have been only a handful of Americans who spoke English.  Just to preface- Thursday night I got no sleep thinking I would sleep on plane.  So the plane took off and for the first few hours the flight was not bad.  Then came the announcements that we should buckle up because there is some turbulence coming up (first the announcements were given in English then in Italian…so I got a heads up of what the rest of the plane was about to hear and to see their faces/reactions..which were great  :D). Then started the turbulence.  I have never experienced such turbulence in my life.  It was seriously out of control. People were going crazy.  I seriously felt I was in a movie where the plane was shaking so much to the point it would blow up.  People were throwing up…and asking for more drinks.  After a few minutes there were no more drinks left on the plane. By this time I was extremely nauseous.  The turbulence went on for 20 minutes straight then paused for a minute then came again. (this happened for like an hour and a half)

Then we arrived on top of JFK, BUT they announced that due to the weather they can’t land yet and they will have to circle on top for a few minutes.  A few hours (!) later they announced they can land but the problem is they are no longer on top of JFK, rather they’re on top of PHL…with not enough fuel to make it back to JFK to land.  So they landed in PHL to fill up on some fuel which they said will take just a few minutes.

Once we landed everyone got out of their seats from being stuck to it for hours.  We all ran to the front hoping to either get out or to speak to a FA about what’s going on.  I heard a woman telling the main guy in charge that her son needs to get of this plane and get is very important for him.  His reply was “I’m sorry, unless your son is having seizures on the floor, I can’t let you out.”  I explained to him that according to my religion I won’t be able to stay in a plane for that much longer due to the coming of Shabbath.  I told me “Don’t worry, I spoke your God last week about this and he told me in this situation hell excuse you”  :o >:(.  There was no way to budge with this guy. People were literally screaming at this guy to get out.  The only way a person that possibly might have been able to leave was to probably hit the FA.

Went back to my seat thinking were going to be taking off in a few minutes.  A few hours later I realized we aint moving any time soon.  I decided to call my parents. Only problem was I packed my phone in my carry on which I had checked in last minute(very stupid on my part).   So I found an American who I asked if I can borrow their phone. I called my parents who were quite worried and explained to them what’s going on.  My father told me whatever you do stay on the phone till he gets a psak from a Rav what to do.  The problem was NOW is when the plane wanted to take off again…but couldn’t…because I was on the phone and could not get off.  So I had a bunch of people screaming at me to get off the phone so we can take off…after a while the person I borrowed the phone from kinda took the phone from me…without hearing anything what to do from a Rav.

So we get back in the air and fly to JFK.  Now the problem is there was a long line of planes waiting to land.  We circled on top of JFK for another hour until we landed in terminal 4.  Once we landed people were rushing out…I was so sick I couldn’t move.  I was finally able to get up and leave the plane.  Time is now a few minutes before Shabbos.  As I was leaving I asked a FA if there is any way being that I’m jewish if he can get me through all the lines…he told me he couldn’t.
We were on the plane for a total of ~16 hours! Was supposed to arrive in the morning but arrived more like 6-7pm.  (Dont remember exact times).
We leave the plane and run to passport control..wasnt such a long line.  Went to baggage and as we were waiting for our bags we heard on the loudspeaker that we should go speak to a worker there.  We got our bags and went to speak to him.  He told us your parents called us many times and told us that there will be a car service coming to bring you things for Shabbos and after you get everything you should meet them at terminal 8 where you can stay for Shabbos.  I asked how do we get there? Can we walk?  He said only way is drive or train..and that your parents told me the Rabbi said you can’t take the train.  We said thanks and started going out.

We went outside waiting for them until we realized that they’re probably waiting for us inside.  Being that it was Shabbos by now and the doors were electric we waited till the doors opened and we went in.  We found the car service people holding up a paper with my name on it.  We went to the side and they told us that our parents prepared everything for us..we looked in the bag and there was everything needed for Shabbos.  They said ok lets go home now.  I’m like were staying here for Shabbos…they were not happy.  They said there must be a way out of it.  I said nope..unless someones life is in way out.

They left and we got into a quiet (read: least amount of people walking by, couldn’t get too quiet with music out loud and the tv on everywhere you looked) corner to settle in for Shabbos.  I went to an office to speak to someone about where I can keep my luggage over the night and they told me only in terminal 8.  Then had to wait another who knows how long till someone walked by the door for it to open to leave.

I was to sick to eat anything so after making Kiddush and having hamotzie I was done.  The rest of the night we stayed (2nd night in a row) up out of fear our things might get stolen and because I was kinda sick.  Going to the bathroom was kinda fun being that everything was electric  :).
The next day we ate a little and felt a little better.  We were sitting next to the private door where all the FA’s come and go.  So later in the afternoon we met a FA who asked us what we were still doing there since the morning..waiting for your next flight?  I said no.  He asked oh waiting for someone to pick you up? I said yes.  He said..they must live really far away  ;D
Shabbos day went reallllly slow…it’s very boring to be in an airport on Shabbos.  Wasn’t even a fun terminal…there was nothing happening there.  Just people coming and going.  We got alot of looks (we had our pillows and blankets spread out  :o  ;D).

Finally the time arrived..we thought Shabbos for sure must be over by now.  I turned on my phone and saw tons of voicemails.  It ended up Shabbos was over like 20 minutes earlier and I didn’t know.  A relative of mine then told me hes coming to pick us up from Flatbush and 8 (!) minutes later was at the terminal.
We then found out that the guy working in the airport heard the wrong instructions.  The correct instructions were that the Rabbi paskened we CAN take the train to terminal 8 where we’d have a place to sleep and keep our bags.
After that Shabbos no one was interested anymore in our week vacation in Italy…only interested in our experience in spending Shabbos in JFK airport.
Moral of the story...dont fly internationally on Friday  :D

Re: Israel Master Thread: Things To Do, Places To Eat Bad experience today with Bentzi Jeep tours. Booked months ago and he confirmed. Decided to reconfirm the night before via email just in case. He asked to start an hour earlier. So I rearranged my schedule, rented a car for the trip to Mitzpe Yericho, and guess what, he wasn't there. Called him on his cell and he claimed I had no reservation. I forwarded back to him his emails and he later replied that's it's my fault for not confirming by phone. Note, we never spoke by spoke prior.

What a waste of money on a rented car, gas and time.  Going tomorrow for the Kotel tunnel tours. Got to be better.

But it's embarrassing that there are so many DDFers that believe in this guy. That think he'll be a competent president. That are excited about him.

How are so many people from this  עם חכם ונבון falling for this professional con artist? it boggles the mind.
It makes me feel the same way I do, every time I hear about a bunch of Jews falling for one of the dozens of scams (Sungames etc.), aren't we  officially a smart people? SMH!

Re: United award flights
Let's just say I had a very nervous past couple of weeks since they came up on my account:

Came up after a redeposit. (Yes, I do a lot of those. Maybe I should slow those down...) Apparently the system is now manually auditing redeposits and there's nobody to speak to that can clear it up.
Needs to be reviewed by senior MP and the process takes 2-3 weeks.
Maybe us plebeians without status will now see more saver avail as Top Tiers wont be booking everything with option to redeposit freely :)

Re: Maldives Master Thread
This is not the hechsher thread and not everyone keeps cholov yisroel and not everyone that posts on DDF is Jewish etc..
every thread is the halacha/Kashrus thread.
Also once you hang around the forums a little you start building mental profiles of people.
So from you asking about the catskills I would say your Jewish.
From you spelling "ladder" as 'latter" I would say you are frum.
And from your links to chabad sites and references to the Rebbe I would think you are Lubavitch and dont eat CS.

But you "love" Bon Jovi and eat vegetarian meals in lounges and airplanes so you cant really build an accurate profile.  :)

The original article sounded to me like an advertisement for Bingo. Also, do all his articles need an editor so badly?

Don't flatter yourself. I wasn't responding to you at all. I was merely quoting your post to show what I was referring to. Unfortunately we are not done with this at all. Today it was you tomorrow it will be someone else. The script however, remains the same.

Always the same, first the cry for help, and then the attitude immediately follows!
Isn't what's this is all about, to help other people ? If you don't like helping other people then don't subscribe to the forum. I assume there was a time that you did not know how to play this game, And you probably relyed on someone else's advice. Don't bash someone when they ask a question. If you don't feel like answering. Then don't.
If you don't have something nice to say. Don't say anything.
Nothing personal here. I can't take the attitude here.

There are a couple issues here. As as2 said, most of us took the time to read through the threads before we jumped in. Also, most of us probably jumped in to signing up for cc which don't involve any expenditure. To run out and buy $1200 with no idea how to cash out is simply irresponsible, and honestly, if he didn't get hit hard he'd just do it again, and lay out more when the next chance came along and get himself in deep debt. Better to be attacked, feel bad, despise the people who attacked him, but next time think it all the way through.
Furthermore many of us have put in thousands of hours both here on ddf and elsewhere and in the real world figuring this stuff out. While we want to help, it is extremely frustrating when Pete come and ask to be spoofed everything, especially when they get all defensive.
I keep going back to the horror stories of people eying at target employees, demanding the right to load their RedCard (or 15 cards) and holding up the line. And then we wonder why things get killed?
It takes some delicacy and finesse to be able to MS successfully and get the employees who help us to like you.
Another example.
I went to sams club in November on a Sunday. Grabbed like 20k in gift cards went to cs and asked to buy them.manager came over and asked if I had just been there last night.
Long story short, I had not but other Jewish guys had been. They acted shady, would not give their license, or other info (even though they needed to use their SC card), and the manager decided not to sell. They got upset and ended up making a small scene and a huge chillul hashem.
I, on the other hand, explained EXACTLY what I was doing, how the amex offer worked, and I even vaguely described how I cashed out. I offered my license, agreed to fill out the AML form and had a very pleasant experience. She had no issue and I was able to undo the damage done the previous night. She was so comfortable with my explanation that she held a box of cards for a month till I came back again, and another ddfer also went there and was up front with her.
The next time I went I brought a box of cookies to thank her.
This is what I've learned from doing this alot this year. But the attitude of the other guys is that of people who don't fully understand what we are doing. Is it scary to fill out the AML form? Sure, if you don't know what it's about. But we aren't doing anything illegal, we gotta be comfortable with what we do, and you gotta go slow, have a plan,, have a backup plan, be able to float the funds, and most importantly be nice.
It's more than just run and spend. There is a lot of effort we have put into this. All we ask is that the n00bs put in a drop of effort. At the very least, read through the last few days of this thread. For better or worse it's almost all here.

Re: Hard Inquiry - Bankof

i called to the number back of my card to have a increase of my limit, i specifically ask a few time to the rep if i will have a Inquiry (didn't mention hard or soft) for that, she told me NO.

and now i login to 'credit sesame' and it show me a hard pull form Bankof !!

so i called and speak now to a specialist credit (this what she told me) and she told me that they will lessen to the tape of my call in, and if i am right they will turn the inquiry from Hard to Soft.

she will call me back after the week-end with the result

my question is : do i can force them to take it off completely ? and if yes how ?

or what other option i have here ?

Thanks !

* it is a BankAmericard CASH REWARDS VISA

The option is to have it turned from hard to soft, and for your purposes, doing that is what you want. If they do that, you're good.

Re: Kauai, HI Master Thread And now we all realize we're going to hell.

I booked my flights with Expedia going on American and returning on Hawaiin. They say that uf I cancel I'll get airline credit but will have to pay $200/per person per ticket totaling $800 in fees!!!! That's crazy! It seems like r"l we had a miscarriage and that's why we can't go, but even with a doctors note they don't guarantee they'll waive the rebooking fees. Can any of you help please??

Yes, please HUCA until you find the rep who will waive the fees. Also, although it's booked through Expedia (and therefore the airlines may not touch the ticket), you can try your luck directly with airlines by explaining the situation.  Alternatively, you can cancel now, and then write the airline for fee reimbursement once cancelled.

I'm sorry for your pain.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
To those of you complaining about Pesach programs in general, would you go if it were free?

Also, the guy running the program actually lives in Belgium, so I'm not sure if he qualifies as Israeli.

My parents were offered the opportunity to go to a Pesach program for free (as a speaker) several times. They declined. It goes against both their minhagim of not "mishing" on Pesach as well as the Pesach atmosphere they aim for at home. I'm sure they are not unique.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
To those of you complaining about Pesach programs in general, would you go if it were free?

Not complaining, just feel it's incompatible.

Not only would I not go if it were free, I can't think of any price I would be willing to get paid in order to go to something like this (talking about the luxury programs), or even to a more "modest" program, unless I could have my own cooking facilities and my own food.

My values are not for sale at any price!

They have those already. 95% of practicing yidden participate in those actually.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
There are 2 things to look at

1- Kashrus, which is a much bigger challenge on Pesach. In hotels in particular for varied reasons, the size, the menu needed, the staff, and the usually nonkosher establishment. On Pesach, small mistakes can pose a much bigger problem halachically.

2- Minhug, of not eating out on Pesach. Though its originates to eliminate the kashrus issue, it is still a minuhg.
Kashrus is a huge issue. I would venture a guess that most programs, even the best hechsheirim, end up having at least one major issue over yom tov. I've spoken to many head mashgichim about this.

April 04, 2017, 04:59:21 PM
Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
I'll just assume this post was completely facetious and be done. To say that those of us who oppose the hotels, sound jealous... It sounds like you don't understand life because money pays for anything that comes up. Your kids understand preparing for YT because they hear about it from their friends?! Wow.

It was nebech not facetious. Money pays for everything. Of course I'm jealous that i cant lay back and let someone else do the hard work. But I'm also grateful that I can and do contribute. Not only my wife works hard I do too. And when you sit down to the seder with a feeling of accomplishment, there is nothing like it. I cannot imagine what it would be like sitting down after having written that check or swiped that card and not having lifted a finger in preparation for yom tov. I would probably be sick to my stomach. Thats subjective.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
You said that in programs the mashgichim won't care about gebroktz as much as Chabad would. I told you that in my program the mashgichim were all Lubavitchers who clearly do care about gebroktz, and you throw something about labels back at me.

I don't believe I used any of those labels in my post that you seem to be responding to.

Did you actually ask the mashgichim about the standards of hashgacha (similar to what you did in SIN?) or did you just assume it's up to a certain standard because the mashgichim are "Chabad"? While many "traditional Chabad Pesach chumros" are just family traditions, and might have no real source or strong reasoning to be expected from, much less - imposed on, anyone (though many will strongly adhere to them), the details and the chumra of gebrokts is clearly elucidated in ספר המנהגים and in the Rebbe's הגדה של פסח - if one reads all the footnotes.

To paraphrase a something I posted upthread in Hebrew, some people seem to be more trusting and less questioning when it comes to kashrus, than they are in other trivial things.

Nobody is trying to convince you to go to a program. Perhaps you're so holy that you never eat out at all. More power to you. But I'm done here.
I don't think I've ever claimed to be, or thought I might be, holier than any other Jew.

I honestly don't know why I bother.

Re: Went through the process of house hunting/buying
I would love to live in that world
In the one where you work with a guy for 6 months letting him know how much he can afford, getting him pre-approved, dealing with his RE brokers calling you 20 times a day, walking them through the process of contract, appraisal, commitment, helping them collect all the conditional documents, them calling you asking when youll have a final approval for them even though they only sent you 2 out of 10 documents you requested [rinse, repeat a few times with borrower and buyer/sellers RE brokers], locking a rate a week before closing, and then them leaving you the following week because someone offered them 1/8 better rate and making nothing?

There are positions available.

April 24, 2017, 02:26:32 PM
Re: Went through the process of house hunting/buying
meh... why should the borrower assume that.  you both need to do the same amount of paperwork to get the loan. how can you expect someone to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars more because you decided your rate is fare and the other guys is improperly undercutting.
So you milk the first one for all the info, the hand holding, the million and one questions and have a ready package for the second one. Sounds like typical frum business. Like every tradesman that I know (plumber, electrician, carpenter etc.) 6 months after training his worker the guy is undercutting his old boss on pricing and taking jobs away. Whatever happened to loyalty? Trust? Even if it costs you over time. Small price to pay for a good moral compass. But thats a discussion for the ethics thread.

Re: Bingo wholesale club in Brooklyn
Even if Mehadrin sells it to Bingo for the same price that they sell it to other stores, Bingo can (& should if they stick to their motto) sell it for cheaper then other groceries (& make less on each item, but sell more. Quantity vs quality)

For example Bingo gets golden flow milk for the same $2.40 that all other groceries get it, but all groceries charge a minimum of $2.79, while Bingo sells it for $2.49, making a smaller profit, but selling more, selling it at a loss.

It's only due to the pressure from Mehadrin that Bingo shouldn't be cheaper then other groceries.

9 cents on a bottle of milk doesn't cover the electric for the refrigeration...

IMO you are overdoing it, get an i5 with 8gb ram, ssd, and a graphics card and it will do everything you need it to do. No need for i7, and the extra ram. I assume you are not planning using it to store pictures and videos so no need for the extra TB drive.
You should be able to save a decent amount by doing that

Just to throw out a thank you to all those active in this thread.  I came here with my needs and was given specs (thanks @avromie7) and those specs turned out to be perfect.

Further guidance from @Yisroel Tech helped me find the right match and I saved about $400 from what I would have paid with out all of your advice.

Re: Obamacare Master thread From what I am seeing this is my take on Obamacare:

- The 20% on the top can afford all their medical expenses and did not get affected by the additional costs.
- The 20% on the bottom anyway had Medicaid and didn't gain anything from Obamacare.
- The 5% above the 20% who earned too much for medicaid are the only winners since Obama care gives then coverage at a reduced cost.
- The other 55% from lower to upper middle class got royally screwed!!!!!!

Now that Trump is trying to change things back to the way they were, the Liberals and most of the media who want him to fail at all costs are claiming that people in the 5% will die......... This totally ignores common sense reasoning that 55% of the people are suffering with unaffordable premiums, deductibles and co-pays for the sake of the 5%!!!

Re: AMA: United Polaris EWR-TLV
That was a crazy story in and of itself...

We were originally supposed to fly EWR-ZRH-TLV (on UA and LX) at 6:30 PM. Our flight from Newark to Zurich was delayed, to the point where we'd miss our connecting flight to Tel Aviv. And thanks to Lag Ba'omer being Sunday, pretty much every flight was booked solid - with stops and without.

But... after a heck of a lot of skilled maneuvering by an angel named Lynn in the United Club at EWR, we somehow found ourselves in literally the last two J seats on a overbooked, Erev Lag Ba'omer, 10:45 PM nonstop flight to Tel Aviv... in United Polaris, no less. 8)

The short version is: after a LOT of back and forth, trying different connecting city options, calling other departments (help desk?) etc, someone she was talking to on the phone told her there's 2 seats on UA90. She said "I don't see them, the flight is sold out" and he told her "there's two seats that are reserved, but not ticketed; I'll cancel them out for you." She then booked us into those two seats.

Somewhere, some TA is probably REALLY pissed. 😂
Ok, so the guy behind me said that his ta held him 2 seats in J but at last second was put into economy plus, didn't know  what went wrong so you were the one.....
Plus he paid $2800, for that ticket!!

Re: Selling on Amazon Master Thread
I guess the wiki could be outdated but I am paying the 39.99 fee for amazon selling professional and they are still charging me $1 per item sold does that make sense?

No but you're probably getting mixed up with the fees.
