In that case when he bought it the FMV was not $70.

A willing seller sold 30,000 units to willing buyers at $70.  I'd say that at least for that instant in time the FMV was certainly $70.

is there an alternative/cheaper way to grade. currently you need to pay $69 just to be a member then on top of that the $35 cost + $18 first strike + $15 for certificate slab on this coin. With shipping looking at over $150+ just to get it graded with pcgs

Their target market is dealers, not individuals/collectors.  If you have a number of coins to be graded (or band together with folks that do) you can reduce your price per grade.

That's for an unopened box.  You could get FS designation from PCGS 10 years after the issue if the postmark is within 30 days of 11/14. I'm saying as long as the coin ships by 12/14, which it will regardless of shipping method there's no problem. At least that's my reading.

When is the cutoff date?

Postmarked 30 days from 11/14 for PCGS FS.  So at least for that service NOT a concern re: budget shipping.

Because that was the first time the mint made a special kind of silver eagle. This is the 100th. Also you can get exactly the same coin in the pride of nations set, the only difference is the mintmark. Iíd bet any money that this coin isnít worth near what the 95w is worth in a year. Not to mention that the only way to get the 95w was to buy a $1,000 set.

There are less of these than the 95W's tho right?  It will be by definition, rarer.  For a very collectible (the most?) coin type?  I'm not saying comparison is spot on.  Just think it's closer to compare it to that than it is to compare it to a 100,000 minted special issue...  Plus if we hold and get anywhere close to the 2200% rise (conservative) the 95W saw we'll be beating the market.

Yes. In opportunity cost.  I was talking about basis.

Why not a good comparison?

Many numismatists seeking to acquire the coin are openly comparing it - i've seen that comment on numerous collecting forums.  Perhaps even if the comparison is an objectively poor one (mint location, issue, composition, etc) if the collecting community perceives it to be than it is.

Tim I'd probably hold for 10-15 years.  Assuming that the comparison is a good one, I see many 95-Ws selling upwards of $1,500 today (24 years).  Certainly beats the market in that time AND for $68 I'm willing to take the risk that it doesn't for whatever reason (poor analog, crazy bull market, etc).

This thing has lower mintage than the West Point 95 proof.  Think it's a (try to) buy and hold for me.

Have dealt with PFS a number of times. They're fair, fast and easy.  That said, this coin opp offers to low of a risk ($68) and too high a possible reward to go with a pre arranged sale.  It's been a while.
