Anyone use FidelityCharitable?
Yes

Does any of these DAFs allow you to write regular checks?
What do you mean by "regular checks"? Ones that you write yourself and give to someone? I don't think Fidelity allows that.

Deals/Deal Requests / Re: Electric Bill Savings
« on: February 02, 2021, 03:36:57 PM »
Anyone have any experience with Arbor (https://joinarbor.com)? From their website:

"Arbor's TrueRate Protection is a free service that automates monthly savings on your electric bill by ensuring you are always paying the best rate. Your TrueRate reflects the actual, true price of electricity in your area, without markups, hidden fees, or surprise rate hikes. Activate TrueRate Protection and we'll track the TrueRate in your area and compare the best available rates to your current price. If the TrueRate goes below your current rate, we'll notify you and automatically enroll you in the lower rate."

I don't see a downside to this. Worst case, you don't approve switching to a different provider. As long as you check your monthly statements to make sure you aren't getting ripped off (Ambit Energy anyone?) is there any risk?

Can anyone who has bought a new or used car recently and registered it in NJ confirm how long it took to get license plates?

I bought a used car on Nov 15 from a dealership in NY. They supposedly submitted the paperwork to the NJ MVC and I was supposed to get my plates within 45 days (i.e., end of Dec). Meanwhile, my temporary interstate license plate expired 3 weeks ago.
Plates showed up yesterday. Thanks everyone.

It's impossible to win political office without significant donors.
Paying politicians more won't solve that. Implementing a system similar to the UK were every candidate gets the same amount of money for advertising would. TV stations should be required by the FCC to dedicate X number of minutes of advertising to each candidate. Paying staff and paying for flyers for example would come out of this budget and can't exceed the set amount.

Can anyone comment on the rental car return process at FLL? I am thinking of trying to make a flight motzai shabbos but itís pretty tight timing and Iím wondering if Uber would be the better option rather than risk the return process taking too much time.
Rental car returns are all in terminal 1. If you are flying out of T1 it literally takes no time. Every company does a scan-and-go as soon as you pull into the return lot. Any other terminal and you have to take the airport shuttle from terminal 1. You could theoretically walk (run?) from T1 to the other terminals through the shared parking garage but it's a lot of ground to cover. Impossible to predict how busy or how frequent the inter-terminal shuttles will be.

assuming you've been there, how much time do think we need at pearl harbor/uss arizona?
Assuming you can get timed tickets in advance so you know exactly when the Arizona tour is, figure 2-2.5 hours. I think the boat ride to the memorial is 45 mins round trip plus a 20 minute movie beforehand. You can do the museum before or after. I recommend paying for the self guided audio tour which makes the museum much more interesting.

We did not do the extra activities there like the Missouri or the submarine but that obviously adds time.

I actually really like Oahu; there's tons to do.
+1

Our favorites:
Polynesian Cultural Center
Dole Plantation maze (other activities there were only OK)
Rent mopeds and ride up to Diamond Head for the crater hike

If you are coming from Waikiki area you can easily do Dole in the morning and PCC at noon as soon as they open.

I bought a used car on Nov 15 from a dealership in NY. They supposedly submitted the paperwork to the NJ MVC and I was supposed to get my plates within 45 days (i.e., end of Dec). Meanwhile, my temporary interstate license plate expired 3 weeks ago. I contacted the NJ MVC and they said that they need to know which MVC the paperwork was submitted to in order to track status. I can't get the dealership to give me an answer about which MVC they submitted it to (I suspect they outsource this to a third-party company). Anything else I can try?

I have a set of license plates from a lease that I just gave back that I haven't returned to the MVC yet. Am I better off putting those plates on my new car even though it doesn't match the registered vehicle? Or am I better off driving around with an expired temporary license plate? I figure if I got a ticket for having expired temp license plates I can argue that it was delayed due to COVID. But if I have the wrong plates there isn't much of an argument I can make.

Deals/Deal Requests / Re: Verizon Fios Costumers 300 Mbps Free Upgrade
« on: December 08, 2020, 12:16:04 PM »
All you need to do is call them and ask to be upgraded to whatever the new lowest tier is and it won't increase your monthly cost.
Didn't work for me. But they were able to upgrade me from 100Mbps to Gigabit for just $10 more per month plus the $100 GC. So almost free. Glad I called. Thanks!

I mean it's not the biggest joy to drive on the highway while everyone is cruising right by you and you have your pedal to the metal.... The real joy is for folks who know what road-trips are like, the pain in finding and driving to a hotel every night, packing in and packing out etc, especially with kids.

+1000. As a driver you aren't going to love driving an RV. But you will love the fact that there is no fighting in the backseat. No more "are we there yet?" No more pit stops every 60 miles to use the bathroom or to eat lunch or to stretch your legs. It's true that you're not going to drive 90 MPH but since you also rarely need to stop (except for gas) it probably balances out in the end.

On our RV trips my kids have played board games, cards (on a real table), put their feet up on the couch, draw and color while DW prepares meals and snacks all while going 60 down the highway. Try doing that in your Pacifica.

Is this new cc worth to open 75k points? Brex.com
Now 80K points after spending $1k + 10K for spending $3K + 20K for linking to payroll if you use the signup link from another travel blog. These points transfer 1:1 to half a dozen airline programs (B6, QF, CX, SQ, AF, others). Looks like a business checking account with a secured debit card. Anyone try it before? Any downsides?

Their call quality is also not nearly as good as other companies. <
Agree. Unless you are calling another Verizon customer in which case it switches to HD Voice (VoLTE).

But dont expect data to be quick most of the time. The ping rate is high.
Depends where you are located. They have a POP in the northeast and just added one in Denver. If you aren't near these two geographic locations then your ping times will be higher than normal. For example in Miami it's not as fast as it is when I'm in New York. But still, $25 vs. $40+tax. It's great for teenagers that don't talk on the phone anyway.
