Just Shmooze / Items That Lost Their Hechsher
« on: June 22, 2020, 10:18:41 PM »
Ordered some Ciao Bella sorbet with Whole Foods delivery and was surprised that there was no OU on the package (the image online had an OU).

Turns out they're not kosher anymore :(

But that's why you need to check every time.

Curious if 2020 so far has anyone thinking about making a change.

One of my favorite parts of the Antarctica cruise was dealing with the incredible minutiae of halachic times in crazy places:
https://www.dansdeals.com/points-travel/trip-notes/guest-post-halachic-zmanim-polar-regions-kosher-antarctica-cruise/

It took countless hours, but it was very rewarding.

I'd like to stream a shiur on the kav hatairich from Rabbi A.D. Gancz for the benefit of DD/DDF viewers, but I'm wondering what's the best format for it?

Just record it and upload to Youtube?
YouTube Live and/or Facebook Live and feed some of the best comments to someone in the room for him to answer?
Zoom? How do you stop bombers with a public link out there? Would we have people ask questions at the end? Anyone have any pro accounts for a larger crowd and longer shiur?

Other suggestions?

Just Shmooze / Spammers Are Getting More Clever
« on: May 20, 2020, 06:10:37 PM »
Every day we have a couple new accounts that SPAM the forums, which is why posts from new accounts go into a moderation queue.

But these guys are getting better!

Usually I can decide if something is SPAM in less than a second. But this one took longer:

I wonder what that portends for phishing scams?

I got a fever, chills, and muscle aches 10 days after going to the Ohel (packed due to on 22 shvat...never again!!!) and KWFE NY on 2/17. All the docs said it couldn't be covid and besides, there was no testing then.

Got a repeat fever in mid-March and tested negative. Been home since then.

Anyone else get sick the week after KWFE?

I did, after seeing you there  ;D
Working on getting an antibodies test. I was down with flu symptoms for about a week at the end of February, and was very careful to quarantine just in case.

Wow, anyone else at KWFE get sick?
Surprised this connection hasn't been made before. It was weeks before Purim!

I spent a long time shmoozing with a Mashgiach from Milan, before covid exploded in Italy.
Another person i went with to KWFE also got sick afterward.
Had the friend I went with to KWFE take the Abbott IgG.
Positive as well.

My theory is that KWFE NYC was a major COVID-19 spreader on 2/17. And many people went from there to KWFE LA 2 days later.
Way before even Italy knew it had a problem.

https://www.facebook.com/stuart.ditchek/videos/3075132022530051/

At 4 minutes in Dr. Ditchek says they are noticing steady declines in IgG levels for people taking multiple antibody tests. In his case the numbers fell too low to donate more plasma a few weeks after successfully donating.

Does this mean people will start getting reinfected?
Does this mean making a vaccine is going to be harder than we originally hoped for? Or that we'll all need frequent boosters?

Some posters seem to be having trouble with the forum rules. Please read them again: https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=31.0

Healthy debates can be had without needing to resort to personal attacks and belittling others.

1, The CDC blundered the COVID-19 test. We had time to get the test right, but they created a defective test.
Had there been widespread testing in February and early March, deaths could have been avoided.
Heads should roll.

2. The CDC blundered the mask advice.
Granted the WHO did as well, but it took too long to issue the correct advice.

COVID-19 Minyan Update

After careful deliberation, and in compliance with the guidelines set forth by the Ohio Department of Health, we grant permission to begin a pilot phase of limited “Yard Minyanim”. This permission is contingent on the community’s adherence to the strict guidelines listed below, and on the continued successful containment of the COVID-19 virus in our city.

We have enlisted the assistance of Chaveirim in designating “Block Captains”, who will determine the number of participants on their block, how many minyanim are needed on each block, and where each minyan will be held. They will create specific groups of no more than 10 -12 people, to attend only the minyan designated to them. Each minyan will have a volunteer responsible for enforcing the guidelines below.

The guidelines for the minyanim are as follows:
 Minyanim will begin on Lag B’Omer (5\12\20), not before
 Mincha\Maariv only (NO Shacharis at this time)
 Under no circumstances can a minyan take place indoors (nor should attendees use restrooms in the home)
 All attendees must keep a minimum distance of 6 feet from other attendees (greater distance is recommended where possible)
 All attendees must wear masks and bring their own siddur (and wear gloves when sharing surfaces such as door knobs etc.)
 No lingering or loitering before or after davening
 No children under Bar Mitzvah should attend
 No one may attend a minyan other than the one designated to him
 Anyone not feeling well may not attend (even with the slightest cough or fever)

We urge anyone with health concerns and those above 65 years of age to speak to their doctor before attending, and anyone with any other questions to reach out to their Rov. It is the choice of each member of our community to attend or to daven at home. Everyone has the right to exercise caution, and no one is obligated to attend these minyanim.

Please be mindful of neighbors, and do not draw unnecessary attention to the minyanim. All attendees should arrive on foot, and depart promptly after davening.

Under no circumstance should the above guidelines be compromised, as any non-adherence will jeopardize Tefillah B’Tzibbur for the entire community. Regardless, we will reassess whether or not to continue the minyanim in two weeks.

Please email minyanimvolunteers@gmail.com if you can assist Chaveirim in coordinating the setup of the minyanim.

We take this opportunity to instruct the men, women and children of our community, that although the Governor of Ohio is relaxing some of the state’s policies, it remains critical to refrain from non-essential movement or outings, and to follow social distancing recommendations at all times and in all places (e.g. wearing masks in public, six feet distance, etc.). This includes, but is not limited to, families congregating outdoors, essential outings to purchase food or household items, and employees in their workplaces.

We are grateful to the community for their compliance and restraint, both past and future. The world is in desperate need of our focused and contemplative prayer. Let us pray for the sick, and that Hashem protect us, and the courageous healthcare workers who risk danger to care for the stricken.

May the Tefillah B’Tzibbur add potency to our prayers, so that we soon see an end to this crisis,

May we merit Yeshuos and Refuos soon,
Va’ad HaRabbonim of Greater Cleveland

I consider myself moderately right in general. Perhaps I started slightly to the left of most here, after all I voted 3P in 2016. But that was more about principal over politics.

Much of right wing media talking about COVID since day 1 as a conspiracy or exaggeration has been pushing me more towards the center. Maybe that comes from knowing so many who died or knowing that COVID-19 is no joke from @yuneeq's reporting? But the reporting is nauseating.

Clearly the left is using this to their advantage as well. No surprise there. But I find myself nodding at CNN reporting over Fox more than ever during this pandemic.

I pine for a leader that could say a message like GWB:
